散歩、リンゴ Walk, Apples

 最近 公園の草が伸び伸びで、タイガのような中型犬でも草地に入りたくありません。歩きにくいだけでなく、もしもマダニがいたら大変なので、皆さん敬遠しています。

The grass in the open fields of the Johoku Park has not been cut for weeks, and it is too long even for medium-sized dogs like Taiga to walk in.  Moreover, there is the risk of getting ticks, so we all avoid walking in the tall grass right now.

それにしても湿度の高い朝です。シャワーに入った後なのに、もう汗で首や二の腕がチクチクするほど。

It was another sticky morning.  I had taken a shower before I came out, but already the sweat was stinging my neck and upper arms.

桜の木の下はオープンスペースほどには草深い状態ではないので、となりの草地へ移動しました。

We moved to the field across the road, where the grass underneath the cherry trees was not dense or too tall.

タイガは冷たい草の上で満足そうな顔をしていますが、顔をみただけで草風呂の開始寸前だと分かります。

帰宅して、昨日のリンゴの続き。右側の汚損果が単なる齧り傷なのか、それともムシが中に入り込んだのか、突き止めたいです。

After getting home, I went back to the business of apples.  I wanted to see whether the damage was done by simply nibbling, or some larva burrowing into the fruit.

これ以上被害のないよう、袋を掛け直しました。100枚入りの商品だったので余裕です。

Having removed the damaged fruit, I bagged the apples once again.  Luckily, the packet I bought contained 100 bags, so I had more than enough left.

台所で半割にしてみると、単純な傷でした。でも、３日間くらい連続で穴が拡大していたので、どんな虫が物好きに通っていたのでしょう。野鳥なら、陽光面を突いたはずなので、鳥ではないと思っています。

I cut the damaged apple into half and found that it was simply a bite damage.  Considering that the damage became larger and deeper over 3 days, I wonder what bug had such tenacity.  The reason why I think it was a bug is because, if it were a bird, it would have pecked on the sunny side where it should have been the sweetest.

念のため糖度をチェック。左のは16.6度でした。

Out of curiosity, I applied the Brix meter, and it indicated 16.6％ with the one on the left.

右の陽光面を含む片割れは、28.9度。これは単に、一定の糖分があったけど、未熟果なので水分が無く、甘さが凝縮されていてこのような高い数値が出たのだと思います。

With the one on the right, which was getting most sun, it showed 28.9%.  However, there is no need to get overexcited.  For a given amount of sugar, the young fruit had little moisture, so the sugar content was highly concentrated, thus the high Brix result.

実がムダにならないよう、紅玉の幼果も１個採って来て、市販のペクチンを加えてジャムにしました。香りがいかにも青リンゴの美味しいジャムです。
In order not to waste the apple, I made jam, by adding another apple and store-bought pectin.  It was delicious with a strong green apple flavour.

今朝もハダニがうようよ動いていました。今のダニは灰色か黒の、肉眼で見える大きさのものです。いつものようにベーキングソーダの溶液を作ってスプレーして、30分放置。その後シャワー水をかけると、このようにオレンジ色の液体が袋についていました。ハダニの死骸からのものだと思います。

I saw a lot of spider mites this morning again.  Unlike those invisible ones that I had in June/July, the current ones are visible with grey or dark colour.  As usual, I made a solution with baking soda, cooked corn starch and water.  After spraying the solution, I left it for half an hour before showering.  After showering the leaves, I saw orange drops on the bags again, which must be from the dead mites.

 リンゴの袋を外して1週間ほど経ちました。袋なしの状態だと、毎日の水やりで少しずつ肥大しているのを実感できます。

It has been a week since I removed the bags from the apples.  Without the bags, I can watch the fruits growing, albeit slowly, when I water the trees every day.

右側のまん丸の実はグラニースミス、向こうの扁平な実が「紅の夢」です。

The round fruits on the right are Granny Smith, and the flat fruits on the left are the red-fleshed variety called 'Kurenai-no-Yume'.

これは紅の夢の中で一番大きいもの。

This is the largest of Kurenai-no-Yume.

手に取るとズシリときます。

It weighs heavy in my hand.

これはグラニースミスの最も大きいもの。まだまだ小さいけれど、この品種独特の緑に白い斑点や丸い形をみると、生食用にスーパーなどに並んでいたのを思い出します。生食用のは、外観の良いうちに早採りして出荷されるのでやや小粒。そのまま木に生らせておくと、普通サイズのリンゴに育つけど、形が若干ゴツゴツしてくるのと、果皮が黄色っぽくなります。

This is the largest of Granny Smith.  It is still tiny, but it shows the white spots against the backdrop of green, and the shape of the fruit is roundish.  It reminds me of the Granny Smith apples I used to buy in supermarkets when I was a student in England.  Granny Smith apples sold for fresh eating are harvested before they are fully ripe.  As a result, they are small in size but have the beautiful appearance.  When fully ripe, those apples are as large as any other varieties, but the shape is not as smooth, and the skin colour becomes pale.

ここへ来て問題発生。これ↓は１週間前に袋を外した直後のきれいな実。

A few days ago, I spotted a problem in Kurenai-no-Yume.  This photo is from 1 week ago, when I removed the bags, and the fruits are perfectly clean.

それが現在はこのように、何かに齧られたような跡があります。２,３日前に傷を発見したときはコガネムシか何かが齧ったあと放置されたのだろうと思っていました。それが日に日に穴が広く且つ深くなってきました。虫が果実の中へ入り込んだのかもしれません。

１週間前の予定では、これから着色のために日光に当てていくつもりでしたが、やはり再度袋を掛けて保護したほうが良さそうな気がしてきました。

This is how the same fruits look now.  The one on the right has a bite mark.  When I noticed it a few days ago, I thought it had been bitten by a scarab beetle.  I hoped that would be the end of it.  However, the damage has been getting larger and deeper every day, and I fear that an insect larva has burrowed into the fruit.

When I removed the bag, I was hoping that the fruits will get plenty of sun and become red as they should.  Now, I am thinking of bagging the fruits again.

上の同じ実を違う角度から見ると、陽光面がほんのり色づき始めているようなので、本当は袋を掛けたくないところですが、袋ならいくらでも余っているので、明日にでも実行します。

This is the same fruit, looked at from a different angle, showing that the skin is slightly turning yellow.  Ideally, I would like to leave them exposed to the sun.  However, I have many more bags left, so why not use them?

今の気候はローゼルの苗にとって最適なので、ぐんぐん育っています。次々と枝が分岐して、かなりの場所をとっています。現在の草丈は150cmくらい。開花時期は９月以降らしいので、それまでに枝が分岐するほど花着きも良くなるはずです。
The current hot and humid weather provides an ideal environment for the roselle plant, and mine has been growing rapidly with new branches coming out one after another.  Currently, the plant is about 150 cm tall.  It is expected to flower from September onwards.  As far as I am concerned, there is no need for hurry.  The more the plant grows new branches, the more flowers can be expected, and our hot weather lasts up to the end of September.

毎日の水やりのときに枝を凝視していますが、まだ蕾らしきものは見当たりません。

Every day when I water the plant, I stare at each branch, but I have not spotted anything resembling flower buds yet.

フィンガーライムなど Finger Lime etc

 タイガは去年の秋から今年の７月までは、一度も２階へ上がって来ませんでした。老齢の脚でもう階段へは上れないのだろうと思っていましたが、７月からの猛暑が始まると夜は私より一足先に２階へ上がって、寝室のエアコンを催促するようになりました。以前のように一緒の部屋で寝られるので嬉しいです。

朝は私の朝食、シャワー・身支度などを終えて、散歩に出かけるギリギリまでタイガはエアコンにあたりながら幸せそうな顔で寝ています。タイガを起こしに行った後は、私は階段の下で両手を広げて、タイガがズリ落ちてきた場合に備えて待っています。私のそんな配慮をよそに、もったいぶって階段をそろりと降り始めます。

Taiga stopped coming upstairs in autumn last year, until the heat wave in July this year.  Until then, I thought that her legs had become too weak to climb the stairs due to her old age.  However, since the arrival of the heat wave, every night, she goes upstairs before I finish watching the TV and starts asking for the air conditioner to be turned on.  I am only too happy to oblige since it is so nice to sleep in the same room as we used to.

In the morning, I leave her sleeping in the cool air until I have had my breakfast, shower, and get ready to go out any second.  After waking her up, I hurry down the stairs and stand at the bottom of the staircase with my arms stretched open so that I can catch her if she ever slips and falls down the stairs.  Whether she is aware of my thoughts, she moves slowly like a princess.

今朝の私は手にカメラを持っているので、それを置いて両手を広げるまで偉そうに待っていました。こいつめ、と思いながらも、ばーちゃん犬にケガされたくないので、両脚を踏ん張って身構えて待ちます。

she pauses waiting for me to lay down my camera and stretch my arms towards her like a religious admirer.  Such a diva!  However, since I do not want an old dog to slip and get hurt, I obey her with my legs planted firmly on a stair and the floor.

Near the park, I saw cicada shells on a tree.

セミのけたたましい鳴き声は、暑さに拍車をかけるような効果があります。

The deafening noises of cicadas add to the exhausting heat of the day.

フィンガーライムのダラムズエメラルドが先月開花していました。この苗は去年の春に練馬の渋谷園芸で売られていた極小苗です。小苗にも拘わらず、去年から結実して実を収穫できたので非常に優秀な苗です。今年の春に８号鉢に移植したので、急に木が大きくなっています。フィンガーライムのトゲは半端ない痛さ。何とか樹形を小さく維持するために、新梢を数回切り戻しています。
This is finger lime Durhams Emerald which I bought in spring last year at a nursery in Nerima. It was an extremely tiny plant then, but a few months later it flowered and even produced fruits that I harvested last year.  Such a good performer.  I repotted the plant in a 24 cm diameter pot in spring this year, and it has been growing nicely.  Finger limes have vicious thorns and I have trimmed back the new growth many times this year.

もう長さ３センチほどの実が生っていました。

I saw the plant flowering last month, and already there are young fruits measuring about 3 cm.

「エバーリーフ」のレモンバジルが伸び放題で60cm超えになっています。これと一緒に買ったジェノベーゼバジルは料理に何度か利用したけど、このレモンの香りの方は、自分では一度も使わず終いになりそうです。苗がまだ新鮮だった頃に一度、お茶にするのが好きだと言う近所の知人にどっさり袋詰めにして持って行ってもらっただけです。

The Everleaf Lemon basil that I bought in May this year has grown taller than 60 cm.  The Everleaf Genovese basil I bought at the same time was very useful in cooking, but I have never used this lemon version at all.  When the plant was still fresh, I cut a bagful of branches and gave them to my neighbour who said she liked making tea with it.  Otherwise, this plant has been left alone.

ついに花穂が出てきて、もう夏の終わりを感じさせます。

It has started flowering which indicates that the summer is nearing its end.

皇帝ナツメなど Emperor Jujube etc

 南向きバルコニーに置いてある皇帝ナツメ。うちに来て２年目にしては、予想したほど葉っぱが茂っていません。たぶん、30cm ロングスリット鉢ではもう根詰まりなのだと思います。

This is Emperor jujube, growing on the south-facing balcony.  Considering this is the second year in my place, the leaves are not dense.  I think the reason is that the 30 cm diameter pot is getting too small for this plant.

同様の理由から、着果した実の数も特に多いということはなく、軽く摘果しただけで間に合っています。

For the same reason, fruit setting was not as numerous as last year, and I am doing only light picking of young fruits.

摘果において、最終的に何個残したいかを決めたら、最も緑色で最も小さいものから徐々に取り除いています。今日時点で最小かつ最も緑色の実はこれ。今の時期になると、この状態でも齧ると甘いです。ただし水分はないです。

I have been picking the fruits gradually.  When reducing the young fruits, I first decide how many fruits to grow to maturity, and then I pick the smallest and the greenest fruits at any time.  This is the fruit that meets those requirements as of today.  In late August, even the greenest one is already sweet, although not juicy at all.

明日の摘果は左側の実になりそうです。去年は10個生らせたのですが、今年は20個以内を予定しています。今月中に終わらせます。

Tomorrow, I will likely pick the one on the left.  Last year, I ultimately left 10 fruits to mature, and this year, I will leave up to 20.

最後まで残す対象のものは果皮が黄色くなり始めています。

Those that are likely to be left to mature are already starting to turn pale.

この実は現在一番大きいもの。収穫時にはできるだけ果汁が多くなるよう、毎日３回水やりしています。

Currently, this fruit is the largest.  So as to make the fruits juicy, I am watering the tree 3 times a day.

皇帝ナツメの横に置いてある早脆王は、伸び伸びと育って樹高は1.3メートルくらいになっています。（奥のほうに写り込んでいるロングスリット鉢は皇帝ナツメ。）エネルギーが木の成長にばかり行って、花はほとんど咲かなかったのですが、

This is Early Crisp King jujube, growing next to Emperor (the pot in the deep end is Emperor).  Early crisp King has grown tall and now measures about 1.3 metres, having started as a 40 cm bareroot tree earlier this year.  I think the growth energy has been concentrated on the tree itself, with little left for having flowers.

最近になって２個だけ、幼果があるのに気づきました。まだ長さ1cmに届かないですが、１個でも良いから最後まで育って欲しいです。

However, I noticed recently that the tree has two young fruits.  They are less than 1 cm currently, but I hope they will grow to maturity.

オレンジ類 Orange trees

 2013年11月9日に、それまで鉢植えで実着きだったブラッドオレンジのモロを現在の場所に植え付けました。その後ふたたび実が着き始めるには時間がかかりましたが、一旦樹勢が落ち着くと非常に豊産性でした。モロは果皮が濃い赤色になるので、色彩に乏しい冬の間、観賞価値もある果樹です。また、この木にはセミノールを高接ぎしてあり、同様に豊産性です。

問題は、10年以上も経つうちに木が年々大きくなり、剪定が追い付かないことです。今は木の下のほうだけ枝を整理している状態。

I planted this blood orange, Moro, in this spot, on 9th November 2013.  It had been growing in a 30 cm diameter pot, with a few fruits on it.  It took some years before the tree started growing fruits again, but once it did, the tree has been extremely prolific.  Moreover, the fruits with dark red colour were conspicuous as well as ornamental, in winter when there were hardly any cheerful colours.  This tree also has Seminole grafted on it, which is also prolific.

However, after over 10 years, during which time the tree has grown steadily, pruning the branches is getting extremely difficult.  I now tidy up only the lower part of the tree.

この木を他のものに置き換える可能性も考えて、モロとセミノールはすでに他の地植え苗に高接ぎしてあり、既に実がつくようになりました。

A few years ago, I started thinking about replacing this tree with something else.  In preparation for that, I have been grafting Moro and Seminole on other citrus trees, and they are already starting to fruit.

これは玄関から見て左側の花壇に植えた大実柚子で、モロ、セミノール、そして一箇所には金柑のプチマルの小枝が実をつけています。木の下のほうだけ大実柚子の枝を残してあります。

This is Yuzu growing in the ground, on the left to the porch door and opposite to the old Moro tree across the path leading to the gate.  I have grafted Moro, Seminole, as well as a tiny scion of seedless kumquat which already has fruits on it.  The lower part of the tree is left as Yuzu.

こちらはいかにもモロの果皮。実がつかないうちは、どの枝がどの品種か分からなくなったときは、葉っぱをクシャクシャにして臭い嗅ぎをすると僅かに違いがあるので判断していました。

These are Moro fruits which is obvious from the skin of the fruit.  I grafted 2 scions each of Moro and Seminole on this tree.  When I got confused which branch was which cultivar, I used to break the leaves and sniff the scent - the difference in scent is subtle but I could tell.

この木はその横、門の近くに植わっている種無しカボスです。こちらは2,3年前から接ぎ始めたばかりなので、高接ぎはまだほんの一部です。

This is Seedless Kabosu and stands next to Yuzu.  I only started grafting on this tree a few years ago, so the tree remains largely Seedless Kabosu.

この苗に接いであるセミノールには、未だ蕾が出たこともありません。

This branch is Seminole, grafted on Seedless Kabosu.  It was still too young last spring to get flower buds.

接木箇所はスムーズで、養分が順調に送られているはずです。

The fusion point is smooth. which ensures that the scion is getting enough supply of nutrition.

ミカンの石地も接いであります。

There is also Ishiji tangerine grafted on Seedless Kabosu.

石地は一箇所に２本の枝を着いであるので、将来的には鉢植えの親木よりも沢山の実がなることを期待しています。

I grafted 2 scions close to each other.  When these grow, I am hoping that these branches will produce more fruits than the parent tree growing in a pot.
