朝散歩 Morning Walk

 台風５号が近づいているので、今日は朝からどんより曇っていました。しかも吹く風は生暖かくて、いかにも台風がらみの風です。公園入口の林は天気のせいか人影もなし。

Typhoon No. 5 was approaching Tokyo, and the sky was overcast this morning.  Also, the breeze was warm and humid, typical of typhoon related winds.  When we arrived at the park, there were very few people, probably due to the weather.

林を通って上のほうの広場を目指します。

We walked through the woods, heading for the higher ground.

上の広場に着いても貸し切り状態。

At the top of the hill, the field was also deserted.

写真の奥（中央）に写っているアオギリの大木が、暗い空を背景にドラマチックです。

The tall tree at the back (or, centre) is Firmiana simplex, and it looks dramatic against the background of dark and heavy clouds.

孤高の木で、清々しいです。

This solitary tree is so attractive.

左手の林には栗の木があります。

Among the woods on the left, there is a chestnut tree.

柴栗よりも更に野良タイプの栗で実は利用できませんが、観賞価値はあります。

This tree seems even less cultivated than wild chestnut trees - most of its nutshells are empty.   However, this tree is quite ornamental.

その栗の木の横には、やはり食用にはなり得ないような野良タイプの柿の木もあります。

Next to the chestnut tree is a persimmon tree.  This one is also a wild type, with the fruits being hardly edible.

実を食べたことがあるという人の話では不味くはなかったそうですが、完熟状態でも豆柿のように小さいです。でも、公園に植わっている木なので、実用の果樹よりは観賞用の木が合っているとも言えます。

According to a person who has tasted it, it was not too bad, but even as a mature fruit, it is as small as a golf ball.  However, in a park, it is sufficient to have ornamental fruit trees, rather than real, cultivated varieties which require a lot of looking after.

公園からの帰り、うちの近くまで来たところで、近所の紀州犬ウメちゃんに会えました。ウメちゃんはタイガより１歳下ですが、デリケートな体質で、暑い気候はとくにキツイらしいです。でも、お尻と尻尾の毛が再生してきたようで、前回会ったときよりは元気に見えます。

When we were nearly reaching home, we ran into Ume, our neighbour's Kishu Ken.  She is one year younger than Taiga but has delicate constitution, and a hot climate is particularly bad for her.  Still, compared with how she looked the last time we saw her, her fur seems to have grown back a little on her buttocks and tail.

タイガを見て、嬉しそうにかつ静かに近づいてきました。

When she saw Taiga, Ume approached her with a smile and quiet manner.

タイガはそっけない態度をとっているのではなく、ウメちゃんが最初から臭い嗅ぎ優先で近づいてきたので、それに合わせているだけです。

Taiga does not mean to be aloof.  She saw Ume determined to take a sniff, so she allowed her to do as she pleased.

散々臭いチェックして、

満足したようです。

帰り道を一緒に歩いて、うちの前に到着。

We walked back together, until we arrived at our house.

ウメちゃんはかなりお疲れのようですが、自宅まであと20メートルほどなので頑張って。家の中に入って間もなく雨が降り出したのでラッキーでした。

Ume looked exhausted, but she had to exert herself just for another 20 meters or so. 

It started raining soon after we got inside, so we were very lucky. 

ワイマテの移植 Transplanting Waimate

 ブラックベリーのナバホは今年の収穫のあと撤去しました。その前に、収穫した実は順次、両隣の家と、道の向かいの家に配り、あとは冷凍保存してありました（お向かいさんの両隣は？というと、片方は公園、もう一方は現在空き家状態です）。

冷凍してあった実の約半分を出して、ジャムを作ることにしました。まず、水も何も加えずに実が柔らかくなるまで弱火で煮たら、種を取り除くためにザルと木ベラで、少量ずつ根気よく濾します。写真は種を取り除いた果肉を、綺麗に洗った鍋に戻したところ。この状態でかなり濃くなっています。

I removed the Navaho blackberry plant after this year's harvest.  Prior to that, I distributed Navaho berries, as and when harvested, among my immediate neighbours - left and right, as well as the house opposite (what about left and right of the opposite house?  Well, on the right, there is a park, and on the left, the house is uninhabited currently).  I froze the remaining berries.

Of the frozen berries, I took half out of the freezer to make jam.  I simmered the berries without adding anything, not even water.  When the flesh was soft, I sieved it little by little, using a sieve and a wooden spatula.  It was time-consuming but necessary, in order to make it delectable.  I then washed the pot clean, before putting the sieved berries back (photo below).

砂糖を加えて更に煮ると、ほどなくして木ベラの裏に大きな雫が着くほど濃厚になりました。ブラックベリーって、ナチュラルペクチンが豊富なのかも？念のため、市販のペクチンも少量使って仕上げました。あっけなく完成したので、あわててカラス瓶を熱湯消毒。

The sieved flesh was already very thick and, when I added sugar, it did not take long before I got large dews hanging underneath the wooden spatula.  Are blackberries rich in natural pectin?  To make sure, I added a little store-bought natural pectin to finish.  It was done in such a short time that I had to rush to boil the glass jar.

ドイツ産のガーキンが入っていた大瓶にちょうどの量でした。

The amount was just right for the large jar which used to contain gherkins from Germany.

種が一個も入っていないスムーズなブラックベリージャム。冷めたら冷蔵庫で一晩冷やしてから使います。

Smooth blackberry jam without any pits.  When the jar is lukewarm, I will put it in the fridge and cool it overnight.  

直ぐに味見したいので、別に少量を冷蔵庫で冷やします。ジャムの奥の方の盛り上がりから、粘り具合が伺えます。

In the meantime, I want to taste the finished product.  So, I kept a drop in a plate to cool it quickly in the fridge.  You can see the viscosity from the shine at the deep end.

ナバホを掘り上げた跡地は、苦土石灰を漉き込んで準備してあります。最近の大雨でかなり落ち着いたのでは。
After uprooting the Navaho plant, I tilled the spot with magnesium lime.  It should have been mixed enough after the recent rainy days.

移植するワイマテはこれ。ツルの先端が門の近くで着地して、2,３年前から自然に発根していたものです。こんな日陰でも実をつけていました。

The Waimate to be transplanted is this one.  A vine touched down and rooted naturally here a few years ago.  Even in this shade, it has been producing fruits.

細根がほぼゼロ！ かなり心配な状態ですが、もし植え付けに失敗したら、他にも候補者が控えています。

I do not see any fine roots!  It is worrying, but if it fails, there are other, smaller candidates.

植え付け完了。左右にバラのハンザが植わっています。ワイマテのツルはナバホほどには密生しないので、今後ハンザも良く育つはずです。

Transplanting is done.  Hanza rose is on either side of Waimate.  Since Waimate does not branch out like Navaho, Hanza roses should fare better in the future.

ナバホの大株を撤去した日に、来年以降用のシュートを掘り上げておきました。

When I got rid of the large Navaho plant, I dug out young shoots for growth next year onwards.

掘り上げたときは細根がほとんど無かったけど、雨のおかげで元気になりました。秋までには根っこが張っているはずなので、冬の前に大鉢に植え替える予定です。

These did not have fine roots, either, when first dug out.  However, after the recent rain, the shoots have recovered well.  They will have grown vigorously by autumn, and I plan to repot these in a larger container then.

ナツメ挿し木苗の植え付け Planting Jujube Cutting

 今朝の散歩中、遠くにコーギの「ひめこ」の姿が見えたので、地面の臭い嗅ぎに夢中だったタイガに教えました。ひめこと飼い主さんたちご一行目がけてタイガが突進していきましたが、タイガの本命はひめパパです。

During our morning walk, I spotted Himeko and her parents in the distance and alerted Taiga who was absorbed in sniffing the ground.  Taiga immediately dashed out towards Himeko's group, but the real object of her interest was Himeko dad.

ひめこに何と言われようと、ひめパパにしか興味がない。タイガが公園デビューした子犬時代、ひめこに厳しく躾けてもらった恩は忘れたようです。

Whatever Himeko says, Taiga does not care.  She seems to have forgotten the fact that Himeko taught her manners when Taiga was a puppy and a new face in the park.

車道は交通の邪魔になるので歩道に誘導されました。その間もタイガは早く撫でてもらいたくて待ちきれない様子。

Having a reunion on the road would cause inconvenience to passing cars, so Himeko dad was guiding the pooches onto the pedestrian path.  Even during that time, Taiga could not wait for a cuddle.

タイガの耳がぺったんこ（私には絶対こんな態度を見せません）。呆れたような、ひめこの視線。

Taiga's ears are flat (she never does that with me).  Himeko's eyes speak volumes.

ひめこは「もういいんじゃない？」と言いたそう。

この夢心地の顔も、私には見せません。タイガにとって、ひめパパはこの世で一番好きな人のようです。まあ、勝手にどうぞ。

Taiga's face - is she about to swoon?  She never looks like this with me.  I can safely conclude that Himeko dad is Taiga's most favourite person on earth.

昨日、練馬の渋谷園芸で買った紅筋山百合は、1本は蕾の状態でしたが、今朝には開花していました。朝起きて寝室のガラス戸を開けたとたん、山百合の香りが２階まで漂ってきました。石鹸の香りのような独特の良い匂いです。

朝散歩から帰って鉢に植え付けました。右が昨日の夕方時点で蕾だったほうです。期待していたほどには紅筋が入っていないので少々ガッカリ。

One of the Yamayuri lilies I bought yesterday evening was still in a flower bud state then.  It was already open this morning.  When I woke up and opened the glass door upstairs this morning, I could smell the scent of Yamanyuri flowers.  They have a unique, soapy scent that I love.  

When we got home after the morning walk, I planted the lilies in a tall pot.  The one on the right is the plant that had a flower bud yesterday evening.  It turned out that this one does not have strong red streaks.

昨日の記事で説明した「上根」が出るよう、深植えにしました。

I planted them deep, so that they will start growing roots above the bulbs, as I explained in yesterday's posting.

紅筋山百合はやはり緑の中で映えます。果樹の間の明るい日陰で管理して、今度の冬までに球根が育つよう頑張ります。

Red-streak Yamayuri flowers look their best against the green background.  I will take care of these lilies in the light shade, under the fruit trees.  Hopefully, roots will start growing above the bulbs by winter this year.

今年の１月下旬に挿し木した日本ナツメを、鉢に植え付けることにしました。写真向かって左の挿し穂は新梢がよく伸びているので、

I prepared these Japanese jujube cuttings in late January this year.  Now they should be ready for planting.  The one on the left has well grown new branches, so

この根っこが出ていると思います。

probably these roots belong to that cutting.

一方、右側の挿し穂は、２本の新梢は出ているけど、その後の追加的な成長がありません。また、根っこも見当たらない。

In contrast, the cutting on the right has two branches of about 10cm, but they are not growing - I do not see any additional growth.  Moreover, I do not see any roots close to it.

実際に入れ物から出してみると、外から見えていた根っこは全て左側の挿し穂のものでした。

When I took them out of the clear pot, there was no surprise.  All the visible roots through the plastic wall belonged to this cutting.

ここまで発根していれば、鉢上げした後も育つでしょう。

With so much roots, there is no worry about transplanting.

早速７号鉢に植え付けました。今の涼しい天気のうちに体力を回復して、猛暑が戻ってきたら勢いよく育って欲しいです。

I planted it in a 21cm pot.  Currently, we are having a break from the extreme heat, and I hope this plant will build up its strength in this cool weather, so that it can take advantage of heat and sun when the heat wave returns.
