ブラックベリーの撤去 Uprooting Blackberry Plant

 今朝の散歩で角を曲がったとたん、目に入ったのがコレ。なんとも涼し気なツルハナナスの花です。

When we turned a corner during our morning walk, this bunch of flowers confronted me - Solanum jasminoides.  How beautiful and serene looking.

この花房が道にはみ出して朝の微風に揺れている光景は、アサガオの花が揺れているのに負けない風情があると、ハデハデ花が好きな私は思いました。

The way these flowers were dangling by the side of the road, and swaying gently in the morning breeze, was as charming as a morning glory, but in a flashy way, whereas the sight of a morning glory flower belongs to the world of wabi-sabi.

ブラックベリーのナバホを現在の場所から撤去して、その跡地にゆくゆくローガンベリーのワイマテを植えようと思っています。ナバホの完熟果が猛暑でことごとく日焼けして汚損果になったのを見たあとは、今後ブラックベリーは半日陰で育てようと決めました。

天気予報では７月13日あたりから異常な暑さになるそうなので、少しでも早く作業をすることにしました。午後４時頃の、まだ暑いさなかにとりかかりました。その前に、玄関タイルの上で退屈していたタイガに「外に出る？」と聞いたら、いかにも「結構です」の反応でした。

After seeing the ripe Navaho blackberries getting sunburnt, I decided to remove the plant with the intention to plant Waimate, a Loganberry, when the weather got cooler.  I have several Navaho shoots coming out of the ground and I will plant one of them in a pot for next year and grow it in half shade.

They are forecasting that we will have a once-in-50 years heat wave starting 13th July.  I thought that I would finish the work well before that and began working at 4 p.m. when it was still hot and humid.  Just before that, I asked Taiga if she wanted to come out with me.  Her body language told me 'No'.  

このツルを取り除くと、下草のようになっているバラのハンザが元気になるかも。

When this whole Navaho plant is gone, the Hanza roses underneath will hopefully become more robust.

蒸し暑いなか、滝汗かきながらナバホの地上部を取り除きました。

It was tortuously muggy, and I sweated profusely, but the work itself went smoothly.

最後に、根っこの塊も掘り起こして完了。この時期、直射日光を避けたいエビネ蘭（左）が今後はもろに日向になるので、何かの鉢植えを手前に移動させて影をつくる予定です。

Finally, I dug out the roots.  Suddenly, the Ebine orchid (left) is in full sun.  In order to avoid sunburn on its leaves, I will place a pot of tree in front.

ナバホが無くなって、庭のようすが丸見えです。慣れるまでに時間がかかりそう。

With the Navaho canes gone, passers-by will have a clear view of my garden.  It is going to take time for me to get used to it.

今の蒸し暑い気候は蚊にとって天国。蚊取り線香を３か所に置いての作業です。
This muggy weather provides a paradise-like environment for mosquitoes.  As I did today's work, I had mosquito repellent incense burning, placed in 3 places.

大鉢の素芯オニユリは今が開花のピークです。

The spotless tiger lilies in a larger pot are in full bloom now. 

フィンガーライム Finger Lime

 フィンガーライムのミアローズは、去年の秋の開花からの実をいつ収穫してよいか分からずに放置しておいたら、ここ２か月ほどで少しずつ大きくなり続けました。現時点では去年の完熟果よりも大きいけれど、肥大を続けるのを見ると、なおのこと完熟の時期が分からなくなります。

The Mia Rose finger lime tree had flowers in autumn last year, and the young fruits survived the winter and kept growing through this year's spring.  They are already larger than the fruits last year when they were fully ripe.  However, seeing the fruits continue to grow, I do not know how to tell if they are ripe or not.  

大き目の実が全部で17個あります。どれも石のように硬い。

I see 17 of these fruits.  They are all large but as hard as stone.

試しにこの最も手前のを採ってみます。

I am going to try this one easiest to reach.

半割にしてみると、未だ早すぎでした。去年ちょうど完熟した頃に収穫したのは、赤に近い濃いピンク色で綺麗でした。

When I cut it in half, the flesh was pale, indicating it was not ready.  The Mia Rose fruits last year were nearly red in colour, and very beautiful.

冷蔵庫に白キャベツがあったので、酢の物を一品作ってみました。キャベツスライサーでスライスしたあと塩もみ。その際、青シソを切らない状態で最後のほうで一緒にもんで産毛っぽさを除去。冷水で２度すすいで、青シソを刻む。あとはマイルドなヒマラヤ塩とリンゴ酢、砂糖微量で味付けして、味が決まったところでフィンガーライムも混ぜ込む。

I used a white cabbage to make a Japanese version of coleslaw, as follows.  Slice the cabbage into fine shreds, squeeze them with salt until the juice comes out.  Add green shiso leaves towards the end and continue to squeeze, thereby removing the tiny hair of the green shiso leaves.  Rinse twice in icy cold water.  Get rid of water by squeezing the cabbage with both your hands.  Cut the shiso leaves into fine shreds.  Season the cabbage and shiso leaves with Himalayan salt, apple vinegar, and a pinch of sugar.  Finally, add finger lime.

薄味にすればサラダのように食べられるし、濃いめにすればご飯系にもなります。
If you season it lightly, you can eat it like salad.  If you make the seasoning strong, you can make it a side dish to a Japanese meal.

コーネリアンチェリーに蕾？ Flower Bud on Cornelian Cherry?

 ３日前の７月２日に、コガネムシがコーネリアンチェリー「パイオニア」の新梢を食い荒らしていたのを発見したときは、あまりのショックで葉っぱをよく観察する余裕もありませんでした。今日になって、ボロボロの葉を除去することにしました。V字型に伸びた枝の浅緑色の部分が、うちに来てから伸びた新梢です。その大切な葉っぱを齧られたので本当に腹がたちました。

When I found out that a beetle bug had been eating the fresh leaves of the 'Pioneer' cornelian cherry tree 3 days ago, I was too upset to examine the state of the plant.  Today, I thought I should clean up the tattered leaves.  The V-shaped branches in light green are the new growth since the plant was delivered to me.  To see those precious leaves having been eaten into pieces, I was really mad.  

で、そのボロボロの葉っぱよりも下のほう、V字の付け根に花芽らしきものを発見。

That day, I did not have the calmness to observe the base of the V-shaped branches - there I found a flower-bud-like thing.

間近でよーく確かめるために、鉢を通路に引っ張り出しました。
I pulled the pot onto the passage, so as to scrutinise.

これ↓です。枝の新芽ではなく蕾であると考える根拠は、丸ポチの下にちゃんと首（柄）がついているからです。もう嬉しいの何の。今年の５月１日に買ったばかりのチビ苗のほうに蕾が出るとは。

Here it is.  The reason why I think it is a flower bud, rather than a bud for a new branch is that the round thing has a neck.  I am so excited.  I never thought that the tiny plant I got on 1st May this year would be the first one to get a flower bud.

自分の勉強のために枝を横から見ると、今年伸び出してきた新梢に蕾が出ました（青円）。赤い矢印の上が新梢、それより下が越冬した去年からの枝です。蕾が出るのはその年の枝となれば、今後の剪定の仕方も分かってきます。

For my own education, I checked the V-shaped branches and saw that the flower bud was on this year's growth (blue circle).  The part above the red arrow is this year's growth, while the part below it is from last year.  If it is true that flower buds come out on this year's growth, how I should prune the tree in the future becomes obvious.

こちらは去年の春に買った「カザンラク」。今のところ蕾の気配はありません。

This is Kazanlak that I bought in spring last year.  At this moment, I do not see any signs of flower buds.

汎用ACリモコン Generic AC remote controller

お風呂のシャワーホースとヘッドを買い替えるために練馬のホムセンへ行ったら、ついでに便利グッズを見かけました。エアコンのリモコンです。私はついバッテリーを中に入れたまま一年中 放置するので、うち１個のマイナス極側のバネが錆びて使えなくなってしまいました。もし将来どれも同じように錆びてしまったらエアコン自体が使えなくなる、と不安でした。が、これがあればその心配も不要です。

When I went to a home depo in Nerima in order to buy a new shower hose and head, I found this very useful looking thing.  It is a replacement remote controller for air conditioners.  I often forget to remove the batteries inside during seasons when I do not need the AC.  I found one of the remote controllers no longer usable due to the springs gone rusty from old batteries.  I was getting worried that if all other remote controllers were broken, I would not be able to use the AC.  Now that I found this product, I no longer have to worry about it. 

 主要メーカー16社のエアコンに使えるそうです。うちのエアコンは全て日立の同一機種で、製造年も余裕で該当するので１個買ってみました。

This generic remote controller is usable for the major 16 manufacturers in Japan.  All my ACs were made by Hitachi, and the year of manufacturing is well after the starting year indicated on the list.

右側のが純正品で、見るからに古ぼけています。

It is so reassuring to have a product like this - the one on the right is Hitachi's own.

２階バルコニーの暑さで一旦は瀕死状態になっていた、早生ミカンの「日南の姫」を今年の春に庭に降ろしてダメモトの鬼剪定しました。それが復活してきて、実も10個+ 生っています。苗を買ったとき以来、同じ10号鉢に植えっぱなしで根っこがキツキツなので、来年の春に植え直しする予定です。

A very early ripening tangerine cultivar, Hinano-Hime, nearly died on the upstairs balcony a few years ago, since it got too hot and sunny during summer.  I brought it down and pruned the whole tree to almost nothing in spring this year.  It has made a remarkable recovery and now has more than 10 fruits growing on it.  Since buying this plant as a newly grafted tree, it has been in this pot all along.  The pot is getting really tight with the roots.  Seeing the recovery, I am going to repot the plant next year.

ホムセンまでチャリを飛ばして行ったのは昼食後の酷暑の中でしたが、夕方散歩のときは曇っていて少しはマシでした。茂呂山公園へ上がると、垣根が刈られた後で、まるで夏の終わりの頃のような景色でした。

When I went to the home depo on my bicycle just after lunch, it was unbelievably hot, but It was much more bearable in the evening.  We went to the Moroyama Park.  The hedge row had just been trimmed - or mowed like lawn - and looked like the end of summer.

モミジの林にほっとします。

It was relaxing to walk through the maple woods.

涼しい風が下から吹き上げてきて、過ごし易かったです。

We enjoyed the cool evening breeze blowing from the lower ground.

夕涼み Evening Breeze

 今日も非常に蒸し暑い日でしたが、夕方の公園では涼しい風が吹いていて、住宅街とは別世界でした。びっしり生えた瑞々しいイネ科の草が長過ぎない程度で冷却効果があり、座り込むともう立ち上がれなくなるほど心地よかったです。

We had another extremely muggy day.  However, when we arrived at the park for our evening walk, there was cool breeze, and it was an entirely different world from residential areas.  The verdant grass was adding to the cooling effect of the evening breeze.  Once we sat down on the grass, we could not get up again.

タイガも満足顔です。

Taiga was buried among the grass, looking totally satisfied.

サラダバーの始まり。

She was soon at the salad bar.

誰も来ない草地で、頭の中が空っぽ状態でずーっと座っていました。

We had the field to ourselves, so we stayed sat in the grass until dusk, with my head completely empty.

ブラックベリーの記録 Blackberry Sunburn - just for the record

 先日 原因究明した完熟ブラックベリーの汚損果に関して動画を作り、記録として残します。ちなみに、ナレーションの声は AI で生成しました。

Having learned the cause of the damages on ripe blackberries, I made a video just to keep record.  The voiceover was generated by using 'speechma' AI.  The free editing software I use, 'Davinci Resolve 20', does have a voice generator, but it would take up a lot of space on my PC, so I opted for speechma.

コーネリアンチェリーなど Cornelian cherries etc

 今朝の水やり時にふと見たら、今年の春に買ったばかりのコーネリアンチェリー「パイオニア」にコガネがついていました。しかも、最近伸びてきた新梢の葉っぱを齧ったようです。

When I was watering the plants this morning, I noticed a beetle (Mimela splendens) on the Pioneer cornelian cherry plant that I bought this spring.  The bug had been eating the fresh leaves of the new shoots.

今いる右側の枝の葉は、これから齧るところ？

The bug was about to start eating the leaves of the new shoot on the right?

左側の枝は右の枝に少し遅れて出てきたので、より新鮮な葉っぱ。こちらがボロボロになっています。即、コガネを ’容赦ない方法' で取り除きました。

It had already done the damage on the left branch.  This branch came out after the one on the right, therefore, the leaves were fresher and softer.  I immediately removed the bug in a 'merciless' way.

こちらのカザンラクは、春に出た葉っぱばかりで、夏の新梢がないので無事でした。

This is Kazanlak that I bought in Spring last year.  It has no summer new shoots, so the plant was untouched by the beetle.

それにしても、翌年用の蕾が出始める気配がない。夏の終わりまでには出るそうですが、せっかちな私は、その前、いつどんな形状のぷっくりが有れば秋までに蕾として立ち上がってくるのか、知りたい！
Am I going to get flower buds for next year or not?  I am told that, if the plant is to get flower buds, I should be seeing them by the end of summer.  I am too impatient to wait until then.  So, I stare at the base of leaves every day to see if I can find anything that resembles round heads of flower buds.

無点オニユリの大鉢のほうも咲き始めました。門の階段のところへ乗り出してきていたので、横を通るたびに花粉が服につきました。仕方なく蒸し暑いなか、支柱を立てて束ねました。

The spotless tiger lilies in a larger pot have started to flower.  The plants were leaning heavily over the steps at the gate, and every time I passed, I had to be careful not to get the pollen on my clothes.  So, in this sweltering heat, I put up supports and made a bundle of the lilies.

こちらは２本だけの鉢。今年は異様に背が高くなってしまいました。

These two plants in a smaller pot have been moved next to the porch door.  They are looking unusually lanky.

夕方散歩で城北公園へ向かう途中、近所のシンちゃんに会えました。タイガを見つけてジャンプしてから走り寄って来たのが可愛かったのですが、私のカメラが間に合いませんでした。

On our way to the Johoku Park for our evening walk, we met Shin, a rescued dog in our neighbourhood.  When he spotted Taiga at a distance, he jumped with joy before running towards us.  I was too slow to catch that with my camera.

タイガばあちゃんの臭いを嗅ごうとして、

Shin tried to take a sniff at Taiga who is a few times older than him.

「若造が！」と言わんばかりにフェイントをかけられました。

Taiga moved aside as if to say "Not in million years, young man".

「ま、いいか」

"Well, I tried."

暑さ対策として、シンちゃんの首には保冷剤が巻かれていました。

Shin was wearing a cooling pack around his neck, due to the hot weather.

夕方の公園ではアガパンサスが満開。

In the park, agapanthus plants were in full bloom.

沢山咲いていると綺麗です。

When you have large clusters like these, they do look attractive.

ノカンゾウも咲いていて、ああ、夏だ。

Orange daylilies were also in bloom - another flower associated with mid-summer.
