夕方散歩 Evening walk

 いつも行く八百屋さんで近江新生姜が今日の目玉商品で安くなっていたので、買って来てさっそくガリを作りました。２塊入りのパックを全部使ったら、ザワークラウトが入っていた大瓶にちょうど良い具合でした。使った調味料は米酢と砂糖だけです。冷蔵庫で保存して、いろんなものに利用します。

At the green grocer's that I frequent, newly harvested white ginger was on the shelf as today's offer.  It is the cultivar used for making pickled ginger slices that are put as a condiment to sushi.  In fact, it has many other uses in Japanese food life, so it is a useful item to keep in the fridge.  The pack contained two large lumps of ginger, and they were just the right amount to fill the large jar that used to contain sauerkraut.  Making the ginger pickles is simple: peel and slice the ginger roots, prepare solution with rice vinegar and sugar, cook the slices for a few minutes until the slices are supple (this is when the solution turns pink), cool and store in the fridge.

午後４時頃から暗い雲が立ち込めて時々雷がなっていました。夕立がくるのかと思って待っていたけど降らないので、５時半に散歩に出発。城北公園とは逆方向に石神井川沿いを歩きます。地元のボランティアさんたちが運営している花壇。ここだけはタイガがオシッコしないよう、速足で通り過ぎます。

The sky became overcast after 4 p.m. and I could hear thunders from time to time.  I expected a shower, but it never came.  So, we left for our evening walk at 5:30 p.m.  We walked along the river in the opposite direction to the usual Johoku Park.  When we came to the flower bed that was managed by local volunteers, we passed by quickly, so that Taiga would not stop to relieve herself.

A new face approached us - a very pretty Maltese.  He pulled his owner with all his strength in order to come closer to Taiga. 

タイガを目の前にすると、突然豹変して唸りだしました。私が手を差し出したら体を押し付けてきました。普通はその段階から安心してタイガに近づき始めるのですが、この子はタイガに対しては終始唸りっぱなしでした。でも、スチル画像を開いてみるとスマイル顔に写っているので、飼い主さんと大笑いしました。

However, the moment he came face to face with Taiga, he started to growl and bark at her.  I stretched out my hand so that he could smell Taiga on me, and he pressed himself against me.  Normally, the new dog would feel reassured about greeting Taiga at this stage, but not this one.  He kept growling at Taiga all the time.  Nevertheless, when I opened the still photos on my phone, he looked smiling in every one of them.  His dad and I had a good laugh.

更に川沿いを歩いていると、涼し気な垣根が見えてきました。ああ今年もこの花の季節がきたか、蒸し暑くなるぞ、という気持ちです。

We walked on and came to a house with beautiful blue flowers, which made me say to myself, 'Ah, it is that time of the year again, when the weather turns deadly hot and humid'.

ずっと雷がなっているので先を急ぎ、地蔵さんの場所を目指します。

We kept hearing the thunder, so we hurried on towards the jizo-san (stone statue).

着きました。梅雨の季節のせいか、右の地蔵さんと左の不動明王像のそれぞれに傘がさされています。

Here we are.  Probably due to the rainy season, both of the stone statue has an umbrella over it.

不動明王の横には、うちにある赤花のリーガーベゴニアと似た鉢植えが置いてありました。

The master of this place (originally, this corner was created for him a few hundred years ago, and the little jizo-san is a later addition).  Next to him, I saw a pot of Rieger begonia similar to the one I have at home.  Nice.

いつもの折り返し地点目指して更に歩きました。

We moved on to get to the turning point where we head home.

始めて気づいたのですが、ヤマボウシのウルフアイの大きな木がありました。家の２階まで届いています。

I noticed this tree for the first time - a large dogwood cultivar called 'Wolf Eyes'.

秋には斑入りの白い部分が赤くなると聞いています。覚えていたらまた見に来たいです。

I hear that the white rims turn red in autumn.  If I still remember about this tree in autumn, I would like to come back.

近所の子犬 New puppy on the block

 朝散歩の帰りにコンビニの横を通りがかったら声を掛けられました。ご近所の方で、最近ワンコを迎えたそうです。生後10か月のラビイちゃん。保護された子で、犬種はラブラドゥードルだそうです。うーん、私にはテリアミックスに見えますが。。。

On our way home from the park, we passed by the side of a convenience store, when a voice stopped me.  It was someone in my neighbourhood, and she told me that they had adopted a rescued dog recently - a 10-months old Labradoodle.  To me, she looks like a terrier mix.

タイガばあちゃんは、おこちゃまにはすっかり不愛想になってしまいました。ラビイちゃんが敬意を払って近づいてきたのに、さらっと挨拶をしたあとはもう無関心。ちょっと失礼じゃないの？と思いますが、ワンコを無理に仲良くさせることはできません。

As Taiga got old, she lost interest in meeting new puppies.  This puppy approached Taiga showing respect, but after a brief greeting with the puppy, Taiga's mind wandered away.  It is sad but I cannot force her to be buddies with new faces.

で、犬種に関してなのですが、ラブラドールの特徴のずんぐりむっくりなところは納得いきます。脚は短く、足の形をみるとラブの水かき付きのような外観もあります。でも、この毛並みはプードルには見えないです。

Regarding the breed, she has a stocky stature like a Labrador, with short legs and feet looking like webbed feet.  However, her coat does not look like from a Poodle.  

しいて言えば、この短い尻尾がプードルっぽいのかなぁ。とにかく、性格が◎なので今後も会えることが楽しみです。

This short tail is the only thing resembling a Poodle.  At any rate, her personality is super friendly, and I am looking forward to seeing more of her in the future.

去年の秋に、日本棗の鉢に出ていたヒコバエを鉢上げしました。そのときの小さな鉢のままで4月23日にこの状態だったのが、今では白い根っこが土の上に顔を出し始めて、まるで白ミミズのように見えて引いてしまいました。この写真の右端のヒコバエを土から取り出したときは、失敗してほとんど根っこが着いていない状態で、育ち方も他の２本に遅れて「しんがり」でした。

In autumn last year, I dug up the suckers of the Japanese jujube plant and planted them in small pots.  The suckers remained in their tiny pots, as shown in this photo of April 23rd.  Recently, I noticed white roots coming out of the soil, looking like white worms, which grossed me out.  Even the 'runt' on the right, which hardly had any roots at the time because I botched the digging job, was now showing white roots.

初夏になりどの苗も良く育ち、白根のはみ出し方はどう見ても今度の落葉期まで待てないような氾濫状態だったので、猛暑のさなかにも拘わらず今日 鉢増ししました。以前の鉢はダメモトで有り合わせの鉢でしたが、今度のはお揃いにしました。植え替えてみると、どれがかつての「しんがり」だったのか見分けがつかないほどどれも良く育っていました。

They grew fast in the heat of recent weeks.  I felt that delaying repotting until winter would do more harm than repotting now at the height of summer.  So, I did it today.  Previously, I used old small pots thinking that it might not work.  Today, I used new ones purchased for the purpose.  After replanting, I cannot tell which was the 'runt' - they look equally well grown.

The jujube cuttings from late January this year were looking hopeless the last time I checked.  After replanting the above 3 suckers, I was going to get rid of the cuttings.  However, when I took them out of the black pot,

there seemed to be roots.

5か月かかってやっと発根が始まったようです。ただし、2本のうち１本だけのようで、このポットの裏側には未だ根っこが見当たりません。もう少し待ってから、その時点でどうあれ植え付けようと思います。これで、うちはナツメ苗だらけになります。

After 5 months, at last!  However, only one of the two cuttings seems to have rooted, since I do not see any roots on the other side of the pot.  I will wait for a little longer before replanting.  I now have too many jujube plants in my tiny space.

リンゴの袋掛け Bagging apples

 リンゴの「紅の夢」に日焼けの傾向が見られたので、リンゴ用の袋を注文してみました。私が住んでいる住宅街では、園芸関係の店で扱っていませんでした。

After I found one of the red-fleshed apples looking sunburnt, I ordered sunburn-prevention bags designed for apples.  Where I live is a residential area, and no shops in the neighbourhood sold these.

来年以降も使う覚悟で100枚入りのを買うと、思ったよりお安く済みました。

Thinking that I would need bags from this year onwards, I chose the packet with 100 bags, which turned out to be quite reasonable.

一応、使い方のアドバイスを読んでイメージトレーニング。（実際にやってみると、コマ①の真逆の角度でのアプローチが私には簡単でした。すなわち、図①の袋の上を下にし、後ろを前にして果実を包み込み。うちのリンゴは既に地面に向かってぶら下がっていたので、この違いかも。）

I looked at the instruction on how to use it.  (However, when I came to actually using the bags, I found that doing it the other way around was easier for me.  That is, I turned the bag in ① upside down and flipped it to bring backside forward.  This is because my apples were hanging down, instead of facing the sky.)

The small slit at the bottom will allow any rainwater that might get inside the bag to be released.

完成。まるで木に花が咲いたかのよう。

Done.  The trees look like in bloom.

手が慣れてくると簡単だったので、グラニースミスの天辺に接いである紅玉５個も、つま先立ちになりながら掛けておきました。

Since it was getting easier to do, the more I did it, I also bagged the 5 Kogyoku apples that were growing at the top of Granny Smith.  I somehow managed to reach them standing on my toes.

これで今年の夏は安心して見ていられます。

Now I can sit back and enjoy watching the apple trees basking in the sun.

日焼けの疑いのあるこの１個は、中身を確認したかったので摘果しました。

Before I started bagging, I picked this one which appeared to be sunburnt, so that I could check the status.

半割にしてみると、日焼けはまだ表面的な程度でした。色々勉強になります。

It was not as bad as I had thought - sunburn was only on the surface at this stage.  I have learnt something new again.

昨日届いた冬棗苗に今朝水やりしていて気付いたのですが、この苗は二度接ぎされているように見えます。赤い矢印の部分は接ぎ木テープが巻かれていたところ。当然、ここが融合ポイントだと思っていました。が、今朝よーく見ると、青い矢印の部分にも接いだ痕らしいものを発見。

As I was watering the winter jujube plant that arrived yesterday, I noticed that this tree was grafted twice.  The part with the red arrow is where I peeled off the grafting tape yesterday.  Naturally, I thought this was the fusion point for this tree.  However, on close inspection, I noticed another fusion point underneath.

これは昨日の接ぎ木テープを剥がした箇所。斜め左下へ向かって継目が走っています。

This is where the grafting tape was.  The fusion line runs downwards to the left.

この青い矢印の部分はV字型にかみ合わさっていて、材質は上と下でははっきりとした違いがあります。しかも、台木が負けている。これを違う角度から確認できるのは最初の写真。台木が中間台よりも細く、中間台の上に育っている本体でさえ、台木よりも若干太く見えてしまいます。二度接ぎの例はうちのリンゴ、矮台に接いだグラニースミスと紅の夢でなら知っていますが、ナツメでは聞いたこともありません。

This part with the blue arrow shows a fusion point in a V shape.  Moreover, you can see the texture of wood of the root stock is very different from the middle scion.  Moreover, the root stock is weaker than the middle scion.  We can look at this from another angle in the first photo - the middle scion is larger than the root stock, and the second scion (winter jujube proper) is slightly larger than the root stock.  Why use such a weak cultivar as the root stock?

My cooking apple trees, Granny Smith and Kurenai-no-Yume, are both double grafted, but I have never heard of double grafting in jujube plants.

プチマル金柑が満開になりました。玄関の外に出ると、すぐ横から甘い香りが漂ってきます。

The seedless kumquat is in full bloom.  The pot is placed near the porch door, and I can smell the sweet scent the moment I open the door.

あんな鬼剪定でひどいことしたのに、健気に回復してきました。

In spite of the draconian pruning that I carried out in spring, this tree has made an astonishing comeback.

ナツメ新苗 New jujube plant

 「冬棗」として売られていた苗を購入しました。かつて冬棗の苗が国内で売られていたことがあったようですが、今では普通に流通していません。今 流行っている品種は皇帝、大雪棗、新疆棗など、大実のものであることをみると、冬棗の実が小さくて見劣りしたのかも。機械翻訳の機能を使って中国のサイトをいろいろ見ると、平均単果重は20g+ 程度のよう。ただし、冬棗はジューシーで甘いことから中国では根強い人気があるようです。

で、今日届いた苗の箱を開けてみたら、小さい!!!    ネット上の写真ではもっと立派な苗のように見えましたが、実物は40cm弱の棒苗が芽吹いたばかりの状態です。

I found this plant being sold as 'winter jujube'.  Many years ago, winter jujube was introduced into Japan, but it is no longer available, well almost.  The currently popular cultivars are all varieties that produce large fruits, and the fruit of winter jujube probably looked too unappealing.  By relying on the translation tool to read Chinese articles about winter jujube, I see the average weight of a fruit is only 20g+.  Nevertheless, this cultivar has retained its popularity in China for its juicy and sweet fruit.

I opened the box with excitement to see the plant.  Wow, so tiny!!!  It looked much better in the photo on the internet site.  It is a typical new grafted tree trimmed at 40cm above the ground, whose new buds have just come out.

背の高いオニユリ苗の隣に置くと、この違い。

Placed next to the tiger lilies, the jujube plant looks even smaller.

私が最も気になるのは、この時点で恒常的な枝がまだどこにも出ていないこと。うちの３品種の輸入苗も数か月前までは全くの棒苗でしたが、今では恒常的な枝が育っていて、遥かに充実した成長ぶりです。

What bothers me most is the fact that, even at this time of the growing season, this tree has no permanent branches yet.  My imported 3 jujubes that arrived during winter are of the same age and they were just sticks until a few months ago, but now they are growing steadily with permanent branches which will be the basis for future.

これらの枝はどれも冬には落ちてしまう１年限りの枝ばかりです。

As you can see in these photos, they are all temporary limbs that will fall off in winter.

継ぎ目の状態を確認するためにテープを剥がしてみました。きれいな融合です。

I peeled off the grafting tape and confirmed that the fusion point was neat and clean.

10号ロングスリットに植え付け。肥料は、土を弱アルカリ性にするために発酵鶏糞をメインに、配合有機肥料も少し混ぜました。

I planted it in a 30cm pot with side slits.  As to fertiliser, I used fermented chicken manure to achieve slightly alkaline soil, with an addition of blended organic fertiliser.

たっぷり水やりしたら、樹皮の色が見えてきました。早脆王と同様、青い木です。

夏の間に良く成長させて、この秋には１個でもよいから実を確かめたいです。冬棗は実の形状だけでなく、実が色づく頃の葉っぱにも特徴があります。今の幼い葉の状態では本当に冬棗なのか判断できないです。

After watering the plant thoroughly, I noticed the colour of the bark was green - just like the Early Crisp King plant.  I will take extra care in looking after this plant, so that I may be able to taste a fruit this autumn.  The shape and size of winter jujube fruits are distinctive.  Also, the leaves will be curling inward by the time fruits ripen - currently, the leaves are too young to show this characteristic.
