リンゴの袋掛け Bagging apples

 リンゴの「紅の夢」に日焼けの傾向が見られたので、リンゴ用の袋を注文してみました。私が住んでいる住宅街では、園芸関係の店で扱っていませんでした。

After I found one of the red-fleshed apples looking sunburnt, I ordered sunburn-prevention bags designed for apples.  Where I live is a residential area, and no shops in the neighbourhood sold these.

来年以降も使う覚悟で100枚入りのを買うと、思ったよりお安く済みました。

Thinking that I would need bags from this year onwards, I chose the packet with 100 bags, which turned out to be quite reasonable.

一応、使い方のアドバイスを読んでイメージトレーニング。（実際にやってみると、コマ①の真逆の角度でのアプローチが私には簡単でした。すなわち、図①の袋の上を下にし、後ろを前にして果実を包み込み。うちのリンゴは既に地面に向かってぶら下がっていたので、この違いかも。）

I looked at the instruction on how to use it.  (However, when I came to actually using the bags, I found that doing it the other way around was easier for me.  That is, I turned the bag in ① upside down and flipped it to bring backside forward.  This is because my apples were hanging down, instead of facing the sky.)

この針金でしっかり留めます。

The embedded wire will fasten the bag.

雨水が入ってきたときの排水用？の切れ目が袋の下についています。

The small slit at the bottom will allow any rainwater that might get inside the bag to be released.

完成。まるで木に花が咲いたかのよう。

Done.  The trees look like in bloom.

手が慣れてくると簡単だったので、グラニースミスの天辺に接いである紅玉５個も、つま先立ちになりながら掛けておきました。

Since it was getting easier to do, the more I did it, I also bagged the 5 Kogyoku apples that were growing at the top of Granny Smith.  I somehow managed to reach them standing on my toes.

これで今年の夏は安心して見ていられます。

Now I can sit back and enjoy watching the apple trees basking in the sun.

日焼けの疑いのあるこの１個は、中身を確認したかったので摘果しました。

Before I started bagging, I picked this one which appeared to be sunburnt, so that I could check the status.

半割にしてみると、日焼けはまだ表面的な程度でした。色々勉強になります。

It was not as bad as I had thought - sunburn was only on the surface at this stage.  I have learnt something new again.

昨日届いた冬棗苗に今朝水やりしていて気付いたのですが、この苗は二度接ぎされているように見えます。赤い矢印の部分は接ぎ木テープが巻かれていたところ。当然、ここが融合ポイントだと思っていました。が、今朝よーく見ると、青い矢印の部分にも接いだ痕らしいものを発見。

As I was watering the winter jujube plant that arrived yesterday, I noticed that this tree was grafted twice.  The part with the red arrow is where I peeled off the grafting tape yesterday.  Naturally, I thought this was the fusion point for this tree.  However, on close inspection, I noticed another fusion point underneath.

これは昨日の接ぎ木テープを剥がした箇所。斜め左下へ向かって継目が走っています。

This is where the grafting tape was.  The fusion line runs downwards to the left.

この青い矢印の部分はV字型にかみ合わさっていて、材質は上と下でははっきりとした違いがあります。しかも、台木が負けている。これを違う角度から確認できるのは最初の写真。台木が中間台よりも細く、中間台の上に育っている本体でさえ、台木よりも若干太く見えてしまいます。二度接ぎの例はうちのリンゴ、矮台に接いだグラニースミスと紅の夢でなら知っていますが、ナツメでは聞いたこともありません。

This part with the blue arrow shows a fusion point in a V shape.  Moreover, you can see the texture of wood of the root stock is very different from the middle scion.  Moreover, the root stock is weaker than the middle scion.  We can look at this from another angle in the first photo - the middle scion is larger than the root stock, and the second scion (winter jujube proper) is slightly larger than the root stock.  Why use such a weak cultivar as the root stock?

My cooking apple trees, Granny Smith and Kurenai-no-Yume, are both double grafted, but I have never heard of double grafting in jujube plants.

プチマル金柑が満開になりました。玄関の外に出ると、すぐ横から甘い香りが漂ってきます。

The seedless kumquat is in full bloom.  The pot is placed near the porch door, and I can smell the sweet scent the moment I open the door.

あんな鬼剪定でひどいことしたのに、健気に回復してきました。

In spite of the draconian pruning that I carried out in spring, this tree has made an astonishing comeback.

ナツメ新苗 New jujube plant

 「冬棗」として売られていた苗を購入しました。かつて冬棗の苗が国内で売られていたことがあったようですが、今では普通に流通していません。今 流行っている品種は皇帝、大雪棗、新疆棗など、大実のものであることをみると、冬棗の実が小さくて見劣りしたのかも。機械翻訳の機能を使って中国のサイトをいろいろ見ると、平均単果重は20g+ 程度のよう。ただし、冬棗はジューシーで甘いことから中国では根強い人気があるようです。

で、今日届いた苗の箱を開けてみたら、小さい!!!    ネット上の写真ではもっと立派な苗のように見えましたが、実物は40cm弱の棒苗が芽吹いたばかりの状態です。

I found this plant being sold as 'winter jujube'.  Many years ago, winter jujube was introduced into Japan, but it is no longer available, well almost.  The currently popular cultivars are all varieties that produce large fruits, and the fruit of winter jujube probably looked too unappealing.  By relying on the translation tool to read Chinese articles about winter jujube, I see the average weight of a fruit is only 20g+.  Nevertheless, this cultivar has retained its popularity in China for its juicy and sweet fruit.

I opened the box with excitement to see the plant.  Wow, so tiny!!!  It looked much better in the photo on the internet site.  It is a typical new grafted tree trimmed at 40cm above the ground, whose new buds have just come out.

背の高いオニユリ苗の隣に置くと、この違い。

Placed next to the tiger lilies, the jujube plant looks even smaller.

私が最も気になるのは、この時点で恒常的な枝がまだどこにも出ていないこと。うちの３品種の輸入苗も数か月前までは全くの棒苗でしたが、今では恒常的な枝が育っていて、遥かに充実した成長ぶりです。

What bothers me most is the fact that, even at this time of the growing season, this tree has no permanent branches yet.  My imported 3 jujubes that arrived during winter are of the same age and they were just sticks until a few months ago, but now they are growing steadily with permanent branches which will be the basis for future.

これらの枝はどれも冬には落ちてしまう１年限りの枝ばかりです。

As you can see in these photos, they are all temporary limbs that will fall off in winter.

継ぎ目の状態を確認するためにテープを剥がしてみました。きれいな融合です。

I peeled off the grafting tape and confirmed that the fusion point was neat and clean.

10号ロングスリットに植え付け。肥料は、土を弱アルカリ性にするために発酵鶏糞をメインに、配合有機肥料も少し混ぜました。

I planted it in a 30cm pot with side slits.  As to fertiliser, I used fermented chicken manure to achieve slightly alkaline soil, with an addition of blended organic fertiliser.

たっぷり水やりしたら、樹皮の色が見えてきました。早脆王と同様、青い木です。

夏の間に良く成長させて、この秋には１個でもよいから実を確かめたいです。冬棗は実の形状だけでなく、実が色づく頃の葉っぱにも特徴があります。今の幼い葉の状態では本当に冬棗なのか判断できないです。

After watering the plant thoroughly, I noticed the colour of the bark was green - just like the Early Crisp King plant.  I will take extra care in looking after this plant, so that I may be able to taste a fruit this autumn.  The shape and size of winter jujube fruits are distinctive.  Also, the leaves will be curling inward by the time fruits ripen - currently, the leaves are too young to show this characteristic.

柑橘接ぎ木 Citrus grafting

 金柑のプチマルが蕾をたくさん着けています。枝が繁茂しすぎて場所を取っていたので、今年の春に地上30ｃｍくらいにまで切り戻しました。つい先月になって枝が全体的に伸び始めたあと、ここ２，３日で蕾が噴き出すように現れました。鉢を置いているのは東向き軒下で、直射日光が当たるのは午前中だけの、決して恵まれていない場所です。

I see lots of flower buds on my seedless kumquat.  This potted plant had too many branches taking up too much space, so I trimmed the whole plant to a stick of 30cm above the ground in spring this year.  Only last month, I saw branches budding out, and within the last few days, I started seeing flower buds.  I am astonished.  This plant sits under the east-facing balcony, and it gets direct sunlight only during the morning - not an ideal place for a kumquat plant.

例年、開花は７月上旬です。

They usually start flowering in early July.

玄関前に地植えしてある本柚子に、一昨年の夏に一箇所プチマルを高接ぎしました。それが今年からもう開花します。

I grafted the seedless kumquat on the Yuzu plant in summer 2 years ago, which is growing in the ground close to the front door of the house.  That scion is already having flowers.

以前、10号ロングスリット鉢で育てていた種無しスダチが大きくなりすぎて、２年くらい前に玄関のすぐ横に植えたのですが、今年やっと１枝に実が着きました。

I used to grow my seedless Sudachi in a 30cm pot, but it became too large.  So, I replanted it in the ground 2 years ago, and now I see fruits setting on one branch.

ただし、その１枝は本来なら徒長枝として切り詰めるような場所です。地植えで初めての結実なので、今年の秋に収穫するまではこの枝は切れないです。

これまでこの木には何も高接ぎしてきませんでしたが、タヒチライムを接いでみることにしました。香酸類は、地植えのリスボンレモンとこの種無しスダチに集約したいです。接ぐ場所は青で示した枝。

Unfortunately, the fruit setting took place on a lanky branch that I would have happily trimmed down.  Since this is the first fruit setting after replanting it in the ground, I will have to wait until autumn when the fruits will be ready to be used.

This tree so far had nothing grafted onto it, but I decided to graft Tahiti lime on this.  I chose a branch indicated in blue in the below picture.

タヒチライムは、地植えリスボンレモンに既に１ヵ所接いであります。
I have a branch of Tahiti lime growing on the Lisbon lemon.

レモンもライムも、いくら有っても困らないものなので、将来この木で鈴なりになって欲しいものです。

I can never have too many lemons and limes, so I hope that this tree will be laden with lemons and limes in the future.

オニユリが今朝から咲き始めました。２本だけ植わっている鉢のほうです。

The tiger lily has started to bloom.  These flowers belong to the smaller pot with just 2 plants.

下から順に開いていくので、長く楽しめそうです。

The flower buds start opening from the bottom.  With many more buds in waiting, I can enjoy the sight for several days.

オニユリ開花間近 Tiger lily close to blooming

 過去にヤマユリやカノコユリなどを育てたことがありましたが、いまはもうこのオニユリだけ。ただし、普通のオニユリではなくて無点青軸のオニユリ。花びらの色が朱色で濃いのが美しいし、またこの蕾の段階では幽霊でも出そうな妖しい雰囲気があるのも気に入っています。

蕾が大きくなるにつれ上のほうが重くなったので、最近 支柱を立てました。

I used to grow several cultivars of lilies, including Yamayuri, but now I concentrate on this tiger lily.  However, this is not the ordinary tiger lily - it is a rare variety without spots on the petals, and the stem is green instead of black.  The colour of this variety is deeper orange than the usual tiger lily, and even at this flower bud stage, I find it attractive.

開花間近なのは、門から玄関に向かって階段の右側に置いてある2本だけの鉢。球根が大きくなったので２本だけでも蕾の数が多いです。また、この鉢のは日陰にならないので一足先に開花しそうです。

These flowers near blooming are in the smaller pot with just two stems, placed on the right side of the steps at the gate.  As the flower buds grew in sizes, the upper part of the plant became unstable, so I placed a support for each stem recently.  This pot is in full sun.

これはもう一方の、階段の左側に置いてある鉢。スモモの木の横で若干の日陰になります。この鉢には数個の球根が入っているので、本格的に咲き始めたら見ごたえあるはずです。

This is the other pot, placed on the left side of the steps.  This pot is underneath a plum tree, and it is in partial shade.  I planted about 7 bulbs in this pot, so when in full bloom, the whole thing will look very showy.

これ↓は去年の開花時の写真。今年は大鉢のほうはまだ支柱なしですが、この写真をみて反省しているところです。やはりサポートがあるほうが引き締まった形になる。

This is how they looked last year.  They were supported by several canes, and they look like a huge bouquet of lilies.  I must do the same with the pot on the left before it is too late.

ブラックベリーの日焼け現象に関する米国の記事を読んだあと、うちのも日焼けのケースであるかを実証するチャンスが来ました。ここ３日間の雨と曇り日です。雨天の予報を聞いて、降り出す前日に汚損果の全てを取り除いておきました。

After reading the US article about sunburnt blackberries, I had a chance to test out the hypothesis with my blackberries.   We have just had 3 days of rain and cloud.  On the day before the start of rains, I removed all the damaged berries, leaving only clean ones.  This is how they looked at the end of afternoon today.

結果はこれです。あの汚損果はカメムシの仕業ではなかったと言えます。そもそも、今年はまだカメムシを見かけていません。

I can now definitely say that it was not the work of stink bugs.  In truth, I have not seen a stink bug yet this year.

雨のおかげでまともな収穫ができました。赤いのはルビービューティです。明日からまた日差しが戻ってくる予報なので、どうなることやら。

Thanks to the rains, I was able to pick decent blackberries today (the red berries are Ruby Beauty).  However, they are forecasting a return of sunshine and high temperature from tomorrow.

正体不明のナツメ Jujube cultivar unknown

今日は私にとって衝撃的な 事がありました。４年くらい前に買った動画用のパソコンが突然動かなくなりました。単に画面がフリーズしたのではなく、「ブーン」という大きな音が中からしてきてビックリ。強制シャットダウンは効かないし、マウスも反応しない。もう、完全にお手上げ状態。これが夜の7時過ぎ。スマホでメーカーのサポートサイトを開いても埒が明かないし画面が小さいしで、ストレスが最高潮に達したところ、お門違いなのは承知で池袋のビックカメラに電話してみました。なぜお門違いなのかというと、私がこのPCを買ったのは、当該メーカーに雇われた外部の販売員からであって、その人はビックカメラのパソコン館で販売スペースを当てがわれていただけだからです。

一時間以上ひとりで格闘したあと、とにかく切羽詰まってスマホでビックカメラの代表番号を検索して電話しました。夜の8時過ぎでもまだ繋がって、パソコン館につないでほしい要件を聞かれて状況を説明したら、その人が私に操作を指示してあっという間に解決してくれました。本当に救われた思いでしたが、それにしてもビックカメラって、代表電話に出る人もPCのトラブル解決能力をもっているのですね。驚きました。代表電話は、別の館の白物家電や照明器具など様々な要件の電話がまず通過するところのはずですが。

I had a shocking incident happening to me today.  This PC that I bought about 4 years ago for surfing internet and making videos (i.e., a PC without Window's Office) broke down suddenly.  It was not just the screen freezing but a loud booming noise started to sound from within, which was really scary.  I could not force the PC to shut down, and the mouse did not respond either.  All this happened after 7 p.m.  I tried to find out the solution on the cell phone on the support site of the manufacturer, but no joy.  I am a PC person and hate the tiny screen of the cell phone.  I was getting desperate and decided to phone the shop, Bic Camera, where I bought the PC, even though it was incorrect.  Why incorrect?  I bought this PC from the manufacturer's own salesperson who was simply renting a floor space within the PC Wing. of Bic Camera, and the transaction was between the manufacturer's Japanese subsidiary and me.

However, after struggling on my own for more than an hour with the loud boom sound, I was pushed to the edge.  So, I looked up and rang Bic Camera well after 8 p.m.  I was relieved to see the phone being answered and asked the main line operator to put me through to the PC Wing.  He asked me what the problem was, and I explained.  To my great astonishment, he started telling me what to do and as I followed his instructions, the PC started working again!  I just could not believe it.  He was the operator on the main line, through which calls are directed to the different buildings such as the PC Wing, or the building with household equipment including TVs, washing machines, lighting equipment, etc.

今日も一日中 雨。昨日同様、雲行きを眺めながらワンコ散歩に出ても直ぐに降り出すので、家から出たり入ったりの一日でした。タイガはばっちい玄関タイルの上で退屈しきっていました。最近シャンプーしたばかりだというのに。

It rained throughout the day again today.  I tried to catch the gap between rain clouds, but the moment we went out, it would start raining again.  So, we were in and out of the house many times.  After that, Taiga was bored lying on the dirty tiles of the porch - I shampooed her only the other day, didn't I?

 ５月23日に練馬の渋谷園芸本店で買った、名無しのナツメは購入当日はこうでした。

The nameless jujube tree that I bought on 23rd May at a nursery in Nerima has been growing well.  This↓is how it looked then.

それが今ではここまで成長しました。上の写真で、苗の天辺にV字型に出ている枝が充実してきたのと、その生え際にごっそり６本の新芽が伸びてきたので、すっかり頭でっかちになった印象です。

This is how it is now.  The V-shaped limbs on top of the plant, in the photo above, have become fuller.  Moreover, at the base of the V-shaped limbs, 6 new shoots have come out all at once.  Now the plant looks heavy at the top.

この↓写真の右半分の新枝６本にも、ちゃんと蕾が出ています。今後の７-８月を通して新芽が伸び続けるに伴い、葉の付け根ごとに蕾が出るはずなので、開花は長期にわたりそう。

All the 6 new limbs (on the right in the photo below) have little flower buds.  They will continue to grow over July-August and there will be more flower buds at the base of leaves.

買った時は浅緑色だったV字型の枝は、いまでは黒味を帯びた緑色で蕾もしっかり出ています。

The V-shaped limbs were light green when I got this plant, but now they are in dark green, and with flower buds.

うちに来てからの葉っぱは大きいものが多くて、なかでもこれ↓が巨大。

Many of the leaves that developed after I got this tree tend to be quite large.  This one is the largest of all the leaves.

長さを測ったら、10cm超ありました。

It measured slightly more than 10cm.

幼果も順調にできています。

Young fruits are also setting.

これ↓が一番大きい実で、長さは1cmを超えています。最終的にどんな形と大きさになるのか興味津々です。葉っぱの様子からして、大実になるはず。

This is the largest fruit of them all, with more than 1cm long currently.  I cannot wait to see what shape this will eventually take.

例の自家製「臭い液肥」がよほど合っているのか、地面のすぐ上の古枝にも新芽が出てきて蕾もつくほど余裕です。

Even the lowest dry twig from last year now has a new limb - can it be due to the smelly home-made liquid fertiliser?
