朝散歩 Morning Walk

 今日も一日雨でしたが、朝の散歩の時間帯は一時的に止んでいたのでラッキーでした。「柿の木広場」に入ると、スバル君がいました。ワンコも雨はうっとおしいのか、沈んだ面持ちで動きません。

Another rainy day.  Luckily, we managed to catch the brief time when the rain stopped.  When we arrived at the Persimmon Park, our friend Subaru was already there with his mom.  It seems dogs also hate the rain, and Subaru seemed despondent.

タイガは家を出たときからやる気のない散歩で、スバル君との挨拶もそこそこに、あくびをしながら前を通り過ぎました。

Taiga was not eager for a walk since we left home, and after a brief greeting with Subaru, she walked away with a big yawn.

ごめんね、スバル君。

柿の木広場のすぐ近くに住むサスケが、草地の奥のほうから近づいてきました。タイガといつもの挨拶。

Sasuke, who lives near the Persimmon Park, was at the deep end of the field and came towards Taiga.  He started his usual greeting with her.

こうやってタイガに強気で近づきます。サスケの耳、尻尾、後ろ脚の状態から、自分を強く見せたいのが伺えます。飼い主さん曰く、タイガが唯一の友達だそうですが、

He always approaches her in a domineering manner, with his ears, tail and the way he holds his hind legs, all suggesting that he wants to look strong.  According to his dad, Taiga is the only friend he has, and other dogs do not allow him to come near.

強気で挨拶をしてくるので、タイガが突き放しました。サスケは拍子抜けした顔ですが、いつもこれです。これと対照的なのが、サスケの家の前で塀越しに挨拶するとき。サスケが外に出ているときに通り過ぎると、タイガを見つけて鼻をならし哀れな目つきで柵の間から顔を突き出します。タイガは興味なさそうに塀の外の芝生の上でオシッコをして、挨拶は私にまかせます。

Taiga pushed him away for his abrasive manner, leaving him looking lost, but it always goes like this.  In contrast, the way he greets Taiga at his house is very different.  If we walk in front of his house when he happens to be in the garden, he pushes his snout through the fence and looks at Taiga with a whine and piteous eyes.  Taiga takes no notice of him and starts peeing on the lawn outside of the fence, leaving me to stroke him through the fence.

その後、道路の向かいの茂呂山公園へ行きました。この公園には住所がついているようです。

Later, we crossed the road and went to the Moroyama Park.  This park has its own address.

ここは板橋区。練馬区は基本的に公園に犬は入場禁止だそうです。板橋区はどうなのか分かりませんが、茂呂山公園も柿の木広場も都立城北公園の一部なので、ワンコOKです。

This park is situated in Itabashi Ward.  We live in Nerima Ward, where dogs are not allowed into parks.  I do not know the rules in Itabashi Ward, but fortunately, both Moroyama and Persimmon Parks belong to the Johoku Park which comes under the management of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government which allows dogs into parks.

公園の上の広場に着くと、

When we arrived at the top of the hill,

だれもいない。

there was no-one else.

広場に植わっているのはモミジと桜の木。

Here, the trees are Japanese maples and cherry trees.

歩く気のないタイガと、のらりくらりその辺を回ってみました。

We ambled, with Taiga ready to go home any second.

モミジの枝が雨で重たそうです。

The maple branches were heavy with rainwater.

公園近くの民家のヤマアジサイ。つい先日まではもっと濃い青だったのが、咲き進んだからか色が薄くなってきました。

The Japanese rainy season and hydrangeas are inseparable.  These are wild hydrangeas that you see in mountain creeks and valleys.  Some people like them for their simple appearance.

こちらは園芸種。同じ一株の花なのに、このように紫がかったものや、濃い青など変化があります。

This is a cultivated variety.  The flowers of this tree seem to vary in colour, with some bunches in deep blue, and others like this one looking purplish.

帰宅途中でまた雨が降り出しました。私が雨の中  庭の植物を見回っているあいだ、タイガが相変わらず天気にうんざりした様子でした。

It started to rain again on our way home.  While I was looking at the plants in the garden, Taiga was flat on her stomach looking fed up with the rain.

梅雨入り Rainy season is here

 関東地方も今日 梅雨入りしたそうです。朝の散歩で空き地の横を通ったら、ツユクサが咲いていました。雨は散歩のときにうっとおしいけど、梅雨の涼しさは有難いです。

The rainy season officially started today.  When we passed by an empty plot of land during our morning walk, we saw this flower.  It is called 'tsuyukusa' -  'tsuyu' meaning the rainy season, and 'kusa' means grass.  Rain is inconvenient for walks, but I like the cool temperature of the rainy season.

散歩からの帰りに近所のマンション横まできたら、タイガが立ち止まってしまいました。未だおやつスポットでもないのに止まるのは、ワンコも雨にうんざりなのでしょうか。

Just before we reached home, Taiga suddenly stopped at the side of a block of flats.  We had not reached the usual 'treat' spot yet, but for her to stand still now, she must have been fed up with the rain, too.

いつもは、そのマンションの反対側にあるこの窪んだ場所の階段に腰かけて、おやつを上げています。家はすぐそこなのに、散歩をしたご褒美を要求してきます。一体誰のための散歩なのか。。。　その階段の上のほうではクチナシの垣根が満開になっていました。

It is at the other side of the same block of flats, where I sit down on the stairs and give her the treat.  Our house is literally 30 seconds away from here.  However, she expects a treat for having been out for a walk - whose walk, anyway?  Above the set of stairs, gardenia plants were in full bloom.

大輪の一重咲きで、秋には大きなクチナシの赤い実が生る様は見栄えがします。実は料理などに使えるので、いつか園芸店で苗を見かけたら欲しいと思っています。

These are large flowers with single petals, and in autumn, the trees will have red fruits against the backdrop of green leaves.  The fruits can be used in cooking, and I would love to get a plant if I see one in the shop one day.

今年もオニユリが元気に育っています。これらの数本は10号ロングスリット鉢に植わっています。スモモの木の下、半日陰の状態が良いのか、それとも日向が良いのか実験中。

My tiger lilies are growing well again.  These several stems are in a 30 cm deep pot and placed in half sun, under a plum tree.  I am experimenting to see which is better for the tiger lily - half sun, or full sun.

蕾も出始めました。

Flower buds are starting to separate.

咲くと、こうなります。うちのオニユリは珍しい無点青軸の品種です。普通のオニユリよりも濃い朱色で、花びらが艶やかで、とても美しいです。

These are flowers from last year.  My tiger lily is a rare variety with no dark spots, and with the glossy petals, the flowers are very beautiful.

門の階段の反対側には２本植えの鉢が置いてあり、これは日陰にはなりません。

On the other side of the stairs, I have another pot with two plants.  Here, the plants are in full sun.

かなり草丈がありますが、茎がしっかりしているので未だ支柱をしていません。ただし開花時期には上部が重くなるので、支柱は有るほうが風対策に良いと思っています。

The stems are quite tall but, being sturdy, they have not needed any props yet.  However, when the flowers are in bloom, the upper part of the plant will become heavy and need a support against wind.

こちらの日向の鉢植えのほうが、蕾の成長が進んでいます。野生のユリは雑木林の半日陰で咲くイメージですが、できれば日向が良いのでしょう。
These plants in full sun seem to fare better, with the flower buds' growth much advanced.  Despite the usual image of wild tiger lilies growing in woodlands with half sun, they probably thrive in full sun, given a chance. 

どの鉢の苗にも大きなムカゴができています。開花前だというのに、もう成熟して落ち始めています。まだ落ちていないものも、葉腋の上にかろうじて座っている状態です。

On each of the plant of both pots, baby bulbs are growing.  Even though the flowers are yet to bloom, these baby bulbs are already mature, and some of them have started to fall off.  Those baby bulbs that are still on the plant are now barely hanging on to the base of the leaf.

今日の雨の中で植え付ける作業はキビシイので、ほんの少しだけ鉢に植え付けしました。

I really did not want to do the planting in the rain, but some of them could not wait.

土をかぶせて来年の冬までこのまま。今年の冬までには葉っぱが出て来ますが、鉢やスペースに余裕がないのでこの窮屈な状態で１年半 育てます。

The baby bulbs will start growing leaves by winter this year, but I am leaving them as they are in this pot until winter next year, when I will space them out in multiple pots.  I have baby bulbs growing from previous years, too, and I am running out of pots and space.

ベゴニア追加 New addition to begonias

 スーパーの帰りにJAに寄ったら、普及品扱いのリーガーベゴニアが売られていました。先月までベゴニアというものを育てたことのなかった私にとって、「リーガーベゴニア」というのは従来品種よりもプレミアム付きの印象だったので、この苗が150円とは非常にお得に思えました。いったい生産者は利益を出せているのか心配になるほどの値段です。しかも、私の好みのハデハデ。朱色がかった蛍光色の八重咲きです。

On my way home from the supermarket, I looked into the JA and saw some Rieger begonia plants being offered like common begonias.  I had never grown begonias until I bought the first one last month, so my knowledge about them is almost none.  However, I always regarded Rieger begonias to be a class above the common begonia.  So, when I saw this one priced at 150 yen (about US$1), I could not believe it.  Does the grower make any profit at all?  Moreover, the flowers of this plant is indeed to my taste - showy with fluorescent brightness and double petals.

５月１日に買った最初のリーガーベゴニアは、現在 玄関前に置いてあります。

The first Rieger begonia that I bought on 1st May is placed by the porch door.

当初の花は大きかったけど、後続のはしょぼしょぼの花柄で、従来品種の花のほうが大柄なくらいです。でも、この苗の花は曇りの日でも夜でも閉じないところが長所。

The initial flowers were large and beautiful, but later flowers are miserably small.  In fact, flowers of the 3 common begonias are even larger than this Rieger begonia's.  On the positive side, the flowers of this plant do not shut on a cloudy day or at night.

従来品種は３株あります。どれも買ったときは直径９センチのビニールポット入りだったのを、直ぐにナイフで分割して植え付けました。ひと月も経っていないけど、今ではかなり大株に育っています。

I now have 3 common begonias.  Each one of them came in a tiny 9 cm pot, and I cut and divided the plant into several pieces before replanting in a larger pot.  In less than a month, they have all grown a lot and their pots are beginning to look too small.

早朝散歩から帰ったときはまだ晴れていたので花が開いていましたが、空が曇りになるにつれて花が閉じ始めました。
When we returned from our early morning walk, the sun was out, and the flowers were open.  As the morning progressed, it became cloudy, and the flowers began to close.

この苗は買ったときから草丈が数センチしかなく、直径30センチの浅鉢に植え付けるときは７個に分割しました。今も親指姫みたいな状態ですが、鉢いっぱいに増えてきたので愛着がわいています。奥に写り込んでいるのは、

This plant was less than 10 cm tall when I bought it, and I divided it into 7 pieces before planting it in a shallow 30 cm pot.  It has remained a dwarf type, but it has spread all over the pot, and I am quite fond of this plant.  The red berries in the back are

ローガンベリーのワイマテです。早生品種で、毎年カメムシが登場する前に収穫できるので優秀です。

Waimate Loganberry.  It is an early-ripening variety, and harvesting is done before the appearance of stink bugs.

さっそく直径21センチのダオン鉢に植えつけました。植物は大きな鉢に植え替えると急に立派に見えるのが鉢増しの楽しみです。見方を変えれば、よくあんな極小ポットでここまで育ったものだと思います。

I planted this morning's Rieger begonia in a 21 cm pot.  It is fascinating to see that when a plant is promoted to a larger pot, it suddenly looks grand and handsome.  It is also amazing to think that this plant was hitherto growing in that miniscule pot.

私のカメラでは、蛍光色の花はボケてしまいますが、実物は本当に綺麗な八重咲きの花です。リーガーベゴニアは２株しかありませんが、私が見た限りでは曇りの日でも花が閉じないようなので嬉しいです（この八重が閉じるのは物理的にムリ？）。

My camera cannot capture fluorescent flowers, but the actual flowers are quite pretty with double petals.  I only have two Rieger begonias, but judging by them, it seems that their flowers do not close when the sky becomes cloudy (it looks physically impossible for these double petal flowers to shut).

玄関前はバルコニーの軒下になるので、不要な雨水に当たらずに済みます。

This spot is underneath the upstairs balcony, so the plants can avoid unwanted rainwater.

見ているうちに益々愛着がわいてきました。うちは花が少ないので、ほぼ通年 花が咲くベゴニアは有難い存在になりました。

The more I look at it, the more I become fond of it.  Since I do not grow many flowers, begonias will be valuable plants as they keep flowering almost throughout the year.

夕方散歩など Evening Walk etc

 私が家の中の掃除をしている間、タイガは玄関の冷たいタイルの上で寝そべっていました。

Taiga was lying on the cool tiles of the porch while I was busy cleaning the house.

やっと掃除が終わったので、夕方散歩に出る前にトマトの成長ぶりを確認。今年はトマト苗で実験をしています。米国のユーチューバーたちが自家製液肥の効能について説明していたので、私もやってみることにしました。内容は簡単で、草むしり後の雑草や剪定クズを容器に張った水で腐らせて、植物酵素を作るというものです。私は台所の生ごみも加えています。卵の殻や魚の骨などは、骨粉肥料と同じだと思うからです。発酵を促すために、ドライイーストで作った発酵液を投入する人もいるようですが、この夏の暑さで直ぐに腐敗が始まったので私は使いません。そう、腐敗です。よって、臭いです。

で、その直接の実験対象となったのがこのミニトマト苗。苗を植えたときもそれ以降も、市販の肥料は全く使わず、液肥のみで育てています。樹形は、枝を釣り上げる方法なので摘心をせず伸び放題にしています。

When I finished the housework at last, I went out on the balcony to check the state of the cherry tomato plant.  I am conducting an experiment with this plant.  I saw videos of US Youtubers explaining the benefits of home-made liquid fertiliser, and how easy it was to prepare it.  You simply put weeds and leaves of pruned branches (thus not wasting anything) and water in a bucket or some sort of container.  I also add kitchen garbage - particularly eggshells and fish bones, since they are similar to fish bone fertiliser.  They said that you can also add dry east+sugar solution in order to quicken the process.  However, I find that the summer heat is enough to cause rotting of the vegetation.  Yes, rotting, and it is smelly.

The cherry tomato plant I bought in early May has been the direct subject of experimentation.  When I planted it, I did not put into the soil any store-bought fertiliser.  Likewise, no commercial fertiliser has been used ever since.  As to the growth habit of the plant, instead of using supporting sticks, I decided to hang the branches - another experiment.

一番最初に咲いた花序の実が、今朝から色づき始めました。今までなかなか色づかず、そのかわり実のサイズが肥大し続けていたので、かなり健康的に育っていると思います。しかも、実の粒が結構そろっていて、房の先端にいくほど実が小さくなるということはないようです。

The fruits from the first bunch of flowers started to turn orange this morning - it has taken a long time, as the fruits just kept growing in size without changing the colour.  The plant looks vigorous and, what's more, the fruit size is more or less uniform, without getting smaller towards the bottom of the bunch.

リスボンレモンの背後に置いてある青いバケツがその液肥製造元です。ニオイが強烈なので、鉢の受け皿をフタ代わりに使っています。液肥は、バルコニーに置いてある他の果樹にも同時に使用開始しました。他の果樹には今年の２月に市販の配合有機肥料を与えてありますが、５月上旬以降は液肥のみ。10倍に薄めて毎日のように使っていますが、市販の肥料とは異なり、肥料焼けはないようです。

The blue bucket behind the Lisbon Lemon tree is where the fertiliser is made.  I have to keep the bucket covered all the time in order to contain the stench.  I use this fertiliser for all the plants on the balcony.  However, the plants that were there before the tomato plant's arrival were given commercial fertiliser in February this year.  

I dilute the liquid fertiliser by 10 times and water the plants nearly every day.  So far, they have been free of fertiliser burn.

写真のリスボンレモンは５月に鬼剪定して、大枝だけの坊主状態にしましたが、ほどなく新しい葉が出てきて今は花も少し咲いています。

This Lisbon Lemon tree was cut down to a much smaller size with no leaves left, in early May.  It has recovered quickly and now the leaves are growing back, and I can see some flowers even.

そういえば、このパイナップルのクラウン挿しも、液肥以外与えていません。これが育ってきたら液肥の効果が確認できるでしょう。

Actually, this pineapple crown that I prepared recently has also had no commercial fertiliser.  If this starts growing, it will probe the effect of the liquid fertiliser.

一階へ降りて行くと、タイガが「さんぽ」の合図を今か今かと待っていました。

When I went downstairs, Taiga was waiting to hear any second the word "walk".

最初の草地に着くと、久しぶりにバーニーズのレックスと会えました。現在７歳６か月だそうです。レックスが子犬の頃はドッグランでタイガと遊んでいたので、今も仲良しです。

When we arrived at the first field, we saw Rex, a male Bernese Mountain Dog whom we had not seen for some time.  He is 7 1/2 years old now.  When he was a puppy, he played with Taiga in the dog park, so they continue to be good friends.

スイス原産かつロンゲのバーニーズにとって日本の夏はキビシイので、最近サマーカットにしたそうです。毛を短くすると体の状態が観察しやすくなりそう。つい体中を触ってみました。

For a Swiss dog with long coat, the Japanese summer is too hot.  So, his dad got him a summer cut.  With his short fur, I could see the state of his body and ran my hands all over him.

まだ毛が短かった子犬の頃を思い出しました。

He looks just as he did when he was a puppy with short fur.

レックス、若返ったね。

The summer trimming has taken years off you, Rex.

城北中央公園を歩いていたら、以前 一度会った子たちとばったり。非常に小柄な甲斐犬とゴールデンのきょうだいです。甲斐犬は「ひじき」ちゃん、今は１歳５か月だそうです。ゴールデンは「あつあげ」ちゃん、１歳８か月。前回会ったとき、あつあげちゃんも随分と小柄だったのですが、それ以来スピード成長したらしく、今日は普通にゴールデンでした。

We continued our walk and met the individuals that we saw once before - an extra tiny Kaiken and a small Golden Retriever.  The Kaiken is named 'Hijiki' and she is 1 year and 5 months old now.  The Golden Retriever is named 'Atsuage', and she is 1 year and 8 months old.  'Hijiki' means a dish made of dark seaweed, while 'atsuage' is deep fried tofu - the names exactly match the colours of these food items.  Hijiki is as small as I remembered.  However, Atsuage must have grown rapidly, for she is no longer a tiny Golden Retriever.

家の中で、ひじきちゃんはとても気が強くて、大きな姉のあつあげちゃんを制しているそうです。こうやってタイガと挨拶するときの表情も堂々としています。

According to the owner, Hijiki is very bossy at home, and in spite of her size, she is domineering towards her big sister.  I can believe it because, when she greeted Taiga, she looked confident.

ひじきちゃんのコートの色は、写真では薄めになってしまいますが、黒虎だと思います。黒地に赤い虎模様が入っています。赤虎のタイガはその逆で、赤地に黒っぽい虎模様です。

急にまわりを完全無視で、ひとり草を食べ始めました。

Hijiki's coat colour is black brindle, although in the picture it looks paler.  She has red stripes against the background of black fur.  In contrast, as a red brindle, Taiga has dark stripes against red fur.  

Hijiki suddenly started eating grass, oblivious of others.

この甲斐犬顔がたまりません。

She has such a 'Kai' face.
