午後散歩 Afternoon walk

 昨夜の雨は朝までに止んで、今日は一日中曇りでうっとおしい天気。最近は一日おきくらいに雨が降るので、まるで梅雨が始まるかのようです。近所の花壇ではこの時期の花、シランが咲いていました。

It rained again all night and, although it had stopped by this morning, it was overcast all day today.   It seems to rain almost every other day now, as if the rainy season is about to start.  In the flower bed of my neighbour, the seasonal Bletilla orchids were in full bloom.

ぱっと見、紫と白の品種のように見えますがそれは相対的な影響で、

At first glance, they look like purple and white flowers.

白っぽいのだけ見ると、うっすらピンクの花です。

Taking a closer look, the white flowers are in pale pink - quite pretty flowers.

その近くで、初めて会うトイプードルの子が近づいてきました。モコちゃん、２歳だそうです。最初は積極的だったのに、一旦タイガが近づき始めると急に引っ込み思案の態度。

There came a new face, a 2-years old Toy Poodle, named Moco.  At first, she was quite excited to see Taiga, but the moment Taiga approached her, her courage began to fail.

気を取り直してちゃんとタイガに挨拶。

She recovered herself and greeted Taiga.

タイガもお返し。

Taiga returned the courtesy.

今日のタイガは小竹向原駅につづく遊歩道を歩きたいらしく、その方角へ私を誘導します。環七に向かう途中の家の前で、ネコがタイガを凝視していました。ここはよく通る道ですが、このあたりに住み着いているネコらしく、ほぼ毎回見かけます。この家ではご飯と水をもらえるのでしょう。

This afternoon, Taiga wanted to walk the pedestrian path that leads to the Kotake Mukaihara Station.  On our way to the Ring Road No. 7 crossing, a cat was staring at Taiga in front of a house.  We often pass this house when heading for the crossing, and he is almost always seen in this area.  I think he gets food and water at this house.

タイガが通り過ぎるのを見慣れているのか、平静を保っています。

He is used to seeing Taiga and remains calm at the sight of her.

環七を渡って、小竹向原駅を目指します。どんよりした雲が頭上にあり、ときどき雨粒を顔に感じます。

After crossing the Ring Road No. 7, we walked towards the underground station.  There was a rain cloud above us, and I could feel a few drops on my face.

でも、赤葉のモミジの木があると、そこだけパッと明るく感じます。

In spite of the depressing weather, a red maple tree made the spot cheerful.

この植樹帯には数本のユリノキが植わっていて、まだ開花中でした。

In the tree plant zone, they have several tulip trees growing, and the flowers were still there.

今日は枝を揺らす風がないので何とか花を撮れました。

With no wind swaying the branches today, I managed to get some photos.

下鉄有楽町線、小竹向原駅の自転車置き場も新緑の季節です。

The Kotake Mukaihara Station is the turning point of our walk.  The bicycle parking area of the station is always full.

駅横の駐輪場だけでは足りないので、車道の向こう側、さっきまでの遊歩道とは反対側にも自転車用エリアが設けられています。その端には、まるで家具のようにいつも居る２匹のネコたち。

So, they have a spillover parking line along the pedestrian path, which is on the other side of the vehicle road, and this is the path we take to go home.   Close by, these two cats are always seen, like fixtures.

通る人たちの中にはファンがいて、エサをもらって丸々太っています（手術済み）。エサをやった後もそばで立ちすくんでいる様子から、癒しをもらっているようです。

The cats have steady fans who come to feed them every day (they are neutered).  I have seen persons lingering after feeding them - I think they get healing effects from them.

今にも雨がパラパラ来そうなので、環七交差点を目指します。途中の集合住宅の前ではブラシの木が満開でした。
The sky was threatening, so we headed for the Ring Raod.  On our way, I saw this amazing sight - a bottle brush tree in full bloom by the side of a block of flats.

英語の呼び方は「ボトルブラシ」ですが、なるほどそっくりです。

The name 'bottle brush' is so apt.

さらに歩いていると、植樹帯に満開のヤマボウシの大木がありました。
Further down the road, a large Japanese dogwood tree was in full bloom.

ハナミズキよりも一月ほど遅れて咲くのと、葉っぱも花と同時に出ているので、ハナミズキと混同しません。

It is easy to distinguish this tree from the dogwood tree introduced from the US.  The Japanese dogwood tee blooms about one month late.  Also, leaves are fully out when the tree starts flowering.

ミーアキャット再び Meerkat again

 夕方散歩で城北中央公園を歩いていたら、例のミーアキャットの「ちゃちゃ丸」君に会えました。過去２回会ったときは路上などで交通や他の人たちの邪魔にならなよう気を配る状況でしたが、公園内で会うのは初めてです。

As we were walking in the Johoku Central Park this afternoon, we ran into the meerkat, named Chacha-maru, whom we had seen twice before.  On both occasions, it was on public path and we had to mind the traffic and/or passers-by, whereas today, we were in the park.

今日の出で立ちは、何と唐草模様のハーネスです。非常に小柄な体形用のハーネスに違和感の無いよう、唐草模様が最適なサイズにデザインされているのが素晴らしいです。唐草模様は柴犬やネコ用の服でも見たことありますが、どれをとっても笑いを誘う模様。

This afternoon, Chacha-maru was donning a harness with an arabesque pattern.  The pattern evokes a special (humorous) feeling in the minds of Japanese people, and it is often used for clothes for cats and dogs.  The meerkat is a tiny creature, so the harness is also tiny, and the arabesque pattern is scaled down to fit the size - the whole thing is meticulously manufactured.  

周囲を見渡すときはミーアキャット独特のスタイル。私はいつも灯台の明かりを連想してしまいます。

He surveys the surrounding in the style unique to the meerkat.  It always reminds me of the lighthouse beam.

近くで見るためにしゃがんでいたら、私の膝に上ってきました。体重が全然なくて、足の裏を感じるだけ。

As I was crouching, he climbed onto my knees.  He weighed nothing at all - I only felt the soles of his feet.

こんな仕草をされるともう、メロメロです。

When he did this, I simply melted.

私の膝の上でもタイガのことは全く警戒していません。

Occupying my knees, Chacha-maru was not watchful of Taiga nearby.

タイガは他所のワンコが私にスリスリすると、遠慮気味に私の気を引こうとしますが、ちゃちゃ丸君の場合は単に傍観しているだけ。

As to Taiga, when other dogs snuggle up to me, she tries to gently remind me of her existence, but she was simply standing by as Chacha-maru made himself comfortable on my knees.

私が「もっと近くへ」と声をかけても無視。とにかく目の前の現実から逃避したいようです。

When I told Taiga to move closer, she ignored me.  She just wanted to dissociate herself from the reality in front of her.

タイガはこれまで生きてきて、人間以外では犬、猫、鳥くらいしか見たことがないので、タイガの頭の中でミーアキャットの存在をプロセスできていないのかも。

In her life so far, she has seen only dogs, cats and birds, apart from humans.  So, she cannot process the existence of a meerkat, it seems.

ちゃちゃ丸君の前足の爪は、まるで黒いマニキュアをしたかのよう。

Chacha-maru's nails on his paws are black as if manicured.

それにしても、テレビ番組でしか見たことが無かった生き物が、こうして私の膝の上でリラックスしているなんて最高です。

What a great feeling that a creature that I have only seen in nature programs on TV is now relaxing on my knees.

そうっと撫でてみましたが、全然嫌がらない。

I stroked him tentatively, which he did not mind at all.

ちゃんとアイコンタクトまでとってくれる。

From time to time, he even made eye contacts with me.

ちゃちゃ丸君のママがタイガを撫でているときに、タイガの臭いを嗅ぎに行きました。

When Chacha-maru's mom started stroking Taiga, he approached Taiga to take a sniff.

ちゃちゃ丸君もタイガも、ヤキモチの心配がないので飼い主は安心して見ていられます。ミーアキャットがいるという珍しい光景に人が足を止めはじめたので、その場を譲ってタイガと私は歩き出しました。それにしても、ありがとう、ちゃちゃ丸君。

Since neither Chacha-maru nor Taiga show jealousy, the owners can remain relaxed and enjoy the moment.  Some people started to gather around us to see such a rare creature, so Taiga and I vacated the spot for them and started walking.  Special thanks to Chacha-maru for the enjoyable meeting.

ドッグラン側の林を通ったら、地面に花が落ちていました。先日、小竹向原駅に続く遊歩道の植樹帯で見たユリノキの花です。ユリノキをイギリスではチューリップツリーと呼ぶのですが、花は「ユリ」よりは「チューリップ」のほうが似合う印象。Wikiをのぞいてみたら、この種が日本に入ってきた明治時代にはチューリップがまだ人気がなかったため、ギリシア語由来でユリノキと訳したそうです。

When we were walking through the woods near the dog park, I noticed some fallen flowers on the ground.  They were from the tulip tree, and then I remembered the tall tulip trees we saw the other day when we were walking the pedestrian path leading to the Kotake Mukaihara Station.  Then, the trees were just coming into season.  Now, it seems that the flowers are already falling.

城北公園の木も大木なので、見上げてかすかに花が分かるほどの距離があります。

Tulip trees grow extremely tall, and the branches of this tree are so high up that I could hardly see other flowers.

また雨 Rain again

 昨日の夕方から降り出した雨は、今日の昼過ぎまでジトジト続いていました。よって、今朝の散歩は雨合羽着用です。近所の家の花壇では、もうニオイバンマツリが満開になっていました。

The rain that started yesterday evening lasted until after midday today.  For this morning's walk, Taiga had to put on the raincoat.  In the flower bed of our neighbour's house, the Brunfelsia latifolia was in full bloom already.

咲き始めは濃い紫で、咲き進むにつれ白く変化します。名前のとおり強香を放ちますが、今朝は雨のせいか臭いませんでした。以前、自分でも育てていましたが、神経毒を持っていると知ってからは処分しました。

The flower is in deep purple to start, then the colour turns to white in a few days.  It has a very strong sweet scent normally, but due to the rain this morning, I did not notice the scent.  I used to grow this plant myself but got rid of it when I learned that it had a potent toxin.

３月末に星タンゴールをダウンサイズした際、全ての小枝を除去しました。

In late March this year, I downsized Hoshi Tangor orange tree, by cutting down the branches and reducing the roots.

最近の恵みの雨を受けて新芽が元気に出ています。栄養を分散させたくないので、

Thanks to the nurturing rain of recent weeks, new branches are coming out.  Since I do not want nutrition to be spread unnecessarily,

将来的に育てたい枝だけ残してスッキリさせました。これをもとに、夏の間にグングン成長するでしょう。

I removed a lot of the new shoots, leaving only those I want to encourage growing in the future.  I am sure these will grow fast during the summer months.

もうひと品種 回復中の「日南の姫」は、順調に葉っぱが増えています。

Another citrus tree on the mend is an early maturing tangerine.  New leaves are growing nicely.

いかにも「生命の危機」を感じたかのような、おびただしい数の蕾の開花が終わって、今は幼果がたくさん着いています。

The countless flower buds have finished blooming and now the plant has countless young fruits.

山椒の実が良い具合に肥大しています。何年も前に30cmほどの小苗を買って、同じ鉢に植えっぱなし。しかも果樹の間に置いてあるので日陰ですが、意外と丈夫です。私は刺激の強いものはダメなので、実のほうはいつも放置です。

The Japanese pepper's fruits are ready for use - they are used while green and soft.  However, the fruits are too spicy for me, so I use only the leaves.
