梅干しなど Pickled Ume plum etc

 去年の夏に梅干しを仕込んだのをすっかり忘れていたので、物置から出してみました。

I had forgotten that I prepared pickled Ume plums last summer.  Since they become ready for consumption after about 6 months, I took the jar out of the pantry.

去年は今までになく徹底的に密封をしたので、開けてみたらカビがゼロ。私は低塩で、葉っぱの分も含めて全体的に10%程度に抑えて漬けるので、表面に白いカビが出ることがあるので心配でした。また密封前に、敷き詰めた葉っぱの表面をハチミツでたっぷり覆ったのも防カビ効果になったのかも。

Last year, I took great care in sealing the jar before storing it, and I was pleased to see that the inside was completely free of mould.  Unlike the ones sold in the shop, I use minimum amount of salt (about 10%), which can result in getting mouldy while being stored.  In the jar, the Ume plums are covered with the leaves that give a red colour to the plums, and I covered the leaves with honey before sealing.

去年は小さめの梅が安く買えたので2kg漬けました。一人で食べきるには相当時間がかかるので、今年はパス。

I pickled 2 kg of Ume last summer, since it was a bumper year for Ume plums and they were cheap.  It will take a long time for me to consume all this, so I can go without making them this year.  Pickled Ume plums are indispensable with rice porridge when we have a cold.

外で退屈していたタイガ。目で「散歩」を訴えています。夕方には雨、との予報だったのでその前に出かけました。

Outside, Taiga was itching to go for a walk.  As it was forecast that it would rain in late afternoon, we went out before that.

石神井川沿いを城北公園とは逆方向に歩いていたら、初めてみるポメの子がいました。柴カットで人形のようです。

We walked in the opposite direction to the Johoku Park, along the Shakujii River.  We met a new face - male Pomeranian with a Shiba Inu haircut.

この短いシッポを電気仕掛けのように振ってタイガを見つめています。

The tiny tail was wagging like an electrically driven piece, as the dog watched Taiga's approach.

タイガが近づいても動じない。

He did not flinch when Taiga got closer.

自分から身を乗り出して鼻と鼻の挨拶。福丸くん、7歳だそうです。

He stretched himself towards Taiga and had a nose-to-nose greeting.  His name is Fukumaru, aged 7 years old.

その先を歩いていると、以前見たことのあるシラーの仲間の花が咲いていました。

As we walked on, I saw a flower in the planting strip that I had seen a few years ago - Scilla peruviana.

何とも綺麗。同じ「シラー」の分類でも、このタイプは威厳のある美しさ。

So beautiful.  Although within the same 'scilla' family, compared with the one in my garden, this flower looks majestic.

根元に名札が付けられていて、「オオツルボ」というのだそうです。石神井川に面した遊歩道の脇は基本的に桜やサザンカのための植樹帯ですが、色んな園芸種の花も勝手に植えられているので目の保養になります。

Close to the roots, someone put a piece of paper with the Japanese name.  The plant strip next to the walkway along the Shakujii River is meant for cherry trees and sasanqua bushes planted by the Ward Office.  However, many people silently add pretty flowers which make our walk more enjoyable.

さらにその先を行くと、植樹帯を耕して一年中花が咲いている区画があります。

Walking further, we came to the section that is dedicated to flowers, with something in bloom all year round.

地元のボランティアの方々が管理している区画で、練馬区承認のもとで維持されているそうです。

This flowerbed is created and maintained by a group of volunteers in the neighbourhood, and it is kept under the permission of the Ward Office (we are not supposed to plant favourite flowers at will in the plant strip).

帰りは金魚の水槽が道端に置いてある家の前を通りました。

On our way home, we passed by the house with two goldfish tanks by the road.

２つの水槽のうち右側のは、赤系の個体が多め。

The fish tank on the right has more red individuals than white.

左側のは白系が目立ちます。タイガが顔を近づけてきたので驚いたのか、一瞬ハデな舞が繰り広げられました。水中ショーを見ているよう。

The tank on the left has more white ones.  When Taiga's face got too close to the tank, the fish seemed disturbed.  They moved rapidly and it looked like a water show.

でも直ぐに落ち着いてきたので安心。

Not to worry - they soon calmed down.

近所の中学校脇のツツジがほぼ満開です。
Closer to home, there was a long row of azaleas in bloom along the grounds of the Junior High School.

ゆっくり見ながら歩きたかったのですが、雨がポツポツきたので急いで帰りました。2, 3日前の夕方の雨では、玄関前に出してあったタイガの座布団がずぶぬれになっていて、それを洗濯した後、乾かすのに時間がかかりました。

I wished I could walk leisurely to enjoy the sight, but I felt rain drops on my face and we hurried home.  A few days ago, when we had a downpour during our afternoon walk, Taiga's cushion outside the porch was drenched.  I washed it but it took a long time to dry.

散歩など Walk etc

 昨日は、夕方 急に大雨になったり夜の間にまた降ったりと、天気が不安定でしたが、今日は朝から良い天気で一足早く初夏の清々しい一日でした。公園はどこを見ても緑、緑。

The weather yesterday was unstable, with a sudden downpour in late afternoon when we were out for a walk, followed by more rain after midnight.  In contrast, we had clear sky with cool air all day today - the sort of weather we expect for early summer.  In the park, wherever I looked, it was all green thanks to the recent nurturing rain.

林の中はひんやりとして快適な散歩になりました。

We walked through the woods enjoying the cool air.

新緑の柔らかい緑がとても綺麗です。

The different shades of green looked soft and beautiful.

帰る途中、近所のトイプードル、ぽにょ君とばったり。ぽにょ君の家からは随分と遠くで会ったので、私は最初は誰だか分からなかったのですが、ワンコたち同士には分かっていました。

On our way home, we ran into Ponyo, the Toy Poodle from my neighbourhood.  At first, I did not recognise him since we were so far away from our home area, but the dogs recognised each other straightaway.

せっかくなので並ばせて写真を撮りたかったのですが、こういうときワンコたちは絶対協力してくれません。

Ponyo's dad and I tried to take photos of them, but the dogs never cooperate with their owners when it comes to photo shooting.

ぽにょ君があまりにも私のところへ来ようと落ち着かないので「終わったらオヤツあげるから」と約束したら、

Since Ponyo could not remain still and tried to reach me, I promised him that there would be a treat afterwards.

「オヤツ」の言葉に反応して逆効果でした。

He caught the word 'treat' and got even more excited and could not wait.

これが最大限 落ち着いた瞬間。

ピンクの芳香性エビネ蘭が咲き進んでいます。去年の開花までは大鉢で管理していましたが、休眠期に入ってから地植えにしました。今年は今までになく澄んだピンクと白で、大変気に入っています。白粉のような甘い香りも出ています。

More flowers are opening on the pink Ebine orchid.  This plant was kept in a large pot until last year's flowering, but I planted it in the ground in autumn, when it was dormant.  The flowers this year are looking prettier than ever, with clear pink colour (they used to get a tinge of brown before).  This variety has a strong sweet scent.

花茎は、大小合わせて全部で８本確認できています。購入した当時は１本の花茎からのスタートでした。

I counted 8 flower stems in all, including tiny ones.  When I first bought the plant, it had just one flower stem.

先に咲いた黄色の花は、色あせることもなくまだ頑張っています。

The yellow Ebine is still in bloom, without the colour fading.

散歩など Walks

 朝散歩で近所を歩いていたら、近くのコーギのひめ子に会えました。タイガが子犬の頃に厳しく躾けてくれたお姉ちゃんなので、今でもすっ飛んで行って甘えます。

During our morning walk, we met Himeko, a female Corgi who lives nearby.  When Taiga was a puppy, Himeko taught her manners so, even now, she rushes to greet Himeko whenever we run into each other.

ひめ子が帰る途中だったので、このあと送って行くことにしました。

Himeko was on her way home, and we accompanied her.

途中、毎年ナニワノイバラが見事な家の前を通りました。

On our way, we passed the house with a very mature bush of Cherokee rose.

トゲが狂暴な植物なのに、手入れが良く行き届いています。

This plant has vicious thorns, but the whole bush is kept in beautiful condition.

帰宅して、我が家のシラーの仲間が咲いています。何年も前にお隣さんからいただいた花の土に紛れ込んでいた球根が増えたものなので正確な名前は知らないのですが、たぶん、「シラー・カンパニュラータ」だと思います。

At home, my cilla campanulata (to be precise, a cross between, Hyacinthoides x massartian) has started to bloom.  A bulb was accidentally in the soil when my neighbour game me another plant, and the bulb kept on multiplying until now.

足元にはサギゴケの園芸種（白）と野良（紫）。

At the foot of the cilla, are the Mazus miquelii  in white and lilac.

道路に面した塀に絡ませてあるブラックベリーのナバホの第一花。花柄が大きいので、これから満開になると見ごたえがあります。

I found the first flower on my blackberry plant, Navaho.  Navaho's flowers are large, so when the bush is in full bloom soon, the hedge will be quite a sight.

午後の散歩で公園手前の草地に入りました。タイガは早速サラダバーに立ち寄ります。

In the afternoon, we went to the field near the Johoku Park.  On arrival, Taiga started to eat the grass.

春紫苑が咲き始めています。雑草ながらピンク系のは綺麗です。

Tatarian aster was in bloom.  Although weeds, the pink ones are quite pretty.

山野を散策している気分で歩きながら振り返ると、

I walked about, imagining that I was in the mountain where I grew up.  When I looked back,

タイガがまだ草を食べている。

Taiga was still eating.

このイネ科の草は、葉っぱの両側に細かいギザギザがあるので、タイガは食べ過ぎたあとに吐き出すことがよくあります。その場合、必ず連続３回。アスファルト道路の上でそれをやられると掃除が大変なので、このあとずーっと草地をぶらぶらして吐き気を催さないことを確認してから移動しました。

This type of grass has serrated edges and, when Taiga eats too much, she often starts vomiting afterwards.  In such a case, she always vomits 3 times in a row.  To clean up the vomit on a metaled road as we walk is a messy job for me.  So, we stayed in the field for some time until I was convinced that Taiga was free of nausea.

散歩など Misc.

 朝散歩中に仲良しのポメたちヤマトとクルミちゃんに会えました。年長のクルミちゃんはママにだっこされていたので、私たちとの挨拶に突進してきたのはヤマト。

We met our Pomeranian friends, Yamato and Kurumi, during our morning walk.  Kurumi is older than Yamato with frail legs, and she is being carried in her mom's arms.  So, it was Yamato who spotted us from far and came running to greet us.

タイガは育つ過程で中型・大型犬の子たちとばかり遊んでいたので、小型犬に積極的に寄ってこられると戸惑ってしまいます。

Since Taiga was a growing puppy, she has only played with medium-sized dogs or larger.  As a result, she does not know what to do when a small breed approaches her enthusiastically.

そんなことはお構いなしのヤマトは強気なのに対し、タイガは耳がぺったんこで降参気味なのが、飼い主たちにはとても笑えました。

That does not concern Yamato, and he presses his eagerness on Taiga, while Taiga kept being confused.  All this was quite comical to us humans.

クルミちゃんが地面に降ろされましたが、

Kurumi was put on the ground, but

いつもクールな性格なので、ヤマト・タイガ・飼い主たちのキャアキャア騒ぎに参加しません。

she kept her cool and did not participate in the uproar caused by Yamato/Taiga/humans.

私たちがワイワイやっていたのは、偶然にもトイプードルのポニョ君の家の前でした。外の騒ぎに参加したくてポニョ君は家の中でずーっと吠えていました。遂にママがポニョ君をだっこして出てきたので、みんなそちらを注目。（時間的に、ママは家事の真っ最中だったかもしれないです。）
It so happened that we were having fun right in front of the house where Ponyo, a male Toy Poodle, lives.  So, Ponyo was barking inside the house all the time, wanting to join in the commotion.  At last, Ponyo's mom came out with Ponyo in her arms, and all the three pooches looked towards his appearance.  (I am afraid that Ponyo's mom had been busy with her housework, judging by the time of the morning.)

クールなクルミちゃんのリアクション不足を補うかのように、クルミママがポニョちゃんと挨拶。

As always, Kurumi remained cool, and her mom started greeting Pony affectionately, as if to compensate for Kurumi's nonchalance.

ポニョ君はだっこされたままなので、ワンコ同士の遊びができない状態でした。

All the time, Ponyo was held by his mom's hands, so he could not play with any of them.

帰宅して、バルコニーに置いてあるナツメの新苗を見に行きました。何と、早脆王に1個だけですが開花を確認。早生品種とはいえ随分と季節的に早いですが、これは苗を冬の間 室内で管理していたことから、芽吹きが異常に早かったのが原因でしょう。来年からは、どの品種も通常運転になるはずです。

After coming home, I went upstairs to look at the new jujube plants.  To my surprise, I found a flower on Early Crisp King.  Even though this is an early ripening variety (end of July - mid August), this is unusually early.  All this must be because I kept these new plants indoors during winter.

この苗の新芽は３か所にしかありませんが、一番上の枝は既に30cm近くに育っています。棒苗の時点で気になっていましたが、この品種は節と節の間が長い印象です。

This tree has only 3 nodes growing, but the first branch has now grown to nearly 30cm.  I noticed, during winter that the distance between nodes on this tree was long, and the same thing can be observed in the new branches.
