ナツメ苗 Jujube plants

 つい２日前の23日に見かけた画面に目がクギ付けになりました。育てたことの無い「皇帝ナツメ」が何と3,100円の特別価格で出ていたのです。ナツメ好きのあまり見間違いしているのではないかと、そのサイトを何度もよーく見て確認したあとは、即注文。今日の午後２時過ぎの希望時間帯にはもう配達されました。

箱を受け取った瞬間、「重いっ！」。当然、期待しました。

Two days ago, I happened to see a special price offer of a named variety of jujube (the official Chinese name of this variety is not known in Japan, but it originally came from the continent).  The price was reduced to such a level that I could not resist.  I have never had this variety before and only too happy to try it.

I placed the order, and the plant was delivered just after 2 p.m. today, as I had requested.  The moment the delivery person handed the box to me, it felt so heavy!

箱を開けてみると、こんなに成長した苗。品種ものナツメ苗は１年生の棒苗しか受け取ったことがないので、かなりビックリしました。もう、キツネにつままれたような思いです。あの値段で、この苗？

When I opened the box, I was surprised to see that it was not a bareroot plant.  It might have been a bareroot when it was shipped out in new soil during last winter, but it has grown since then.  I just could not believe my luck!  This plant at 3,100 yen?

今年の春に伸び出した恒常的な枝が箱の天井をつついています。

25 cm 超えの新梢（恒常的な枝）が３本ありました。主幹は根元から先端まで美肌のツルツル。一箇所も蟠棗のような樹皮の虫食いはありません。

Of the new growth, I can see 3 permanent branches of more than 25 cm.  The surface of the tree trunk is perfectly smooth from bottom to the top, unlike the Panzao, an imported plant.

蕾もあります。が、出蕾は今しばらくは、ほどほどにして栄養を温存して欲しいです。ナツメは5-6月の涼しい時期の開花からの幼果はほぼ落ちるのに対し、着果率が高いのは7-8月の高温の時期の開花だと思うからです。

Already, there are a lot of flower buds, but I do not want them to grow too fast.  Flowering in a hot climate of July-August results in fruit setting more than flowers in May-June.  So, I want the plant to conserve its energy.

根っこが崩れないよう、ハサミでビニールポットを切り開いてみました。白根が回っています。

To avoid disturbing the new roots, I cut the plastic pot open with a pair of scissors.  The roots are doing well.

地表に飛び出している細根もあるくらい勢いが良いです。

愛用している用土と鹿沼土で、10号ロングスリット鉢に植え付けました。１週間くらいは庭の半日陰で根っこを回復させ、その後、真夏には灼熱の砂漠になる２階バルコニーへ上げます。

今日は最高にシアワセな気分になりました。お店の方々、ありがとう御座いました！

I planted it in a 30 cm diameter pot.  I will keep it in partial shade for about a week, before taking it to the upstairs balcony where the plant will enjoy full sun.

I cannot tell you how happy I am!

ところで、3月23日の配達から２か月経った蟠棗（ぱんざお）は、今日現在この状態です。生存確率を少しでも高めるために主幹を25 cmほどに切り詰めて、根っこがこの↓ひとつの節だけを養うようにしてからもう２か月も経ったとは。。。でも、希望を捨てていません。

As to the Panzao jujube that arrived on 23rd March this year, no sign of movement yet.  However, I am still optimistic that this plant will live.  I am just waiting for the root system to start nurturing this one node.  All my hope is in this one node.

「生きている」と考えるその根拠は、苗に水をぶっかけると樹肌が先っちょまで緑色っぽく見えてくるからです。主幹の表面はあちこち虫食い状態で樹皮が破れていますが、それでもこの苗は頑張っているように思える。

虫食いの樹皮に関しては、中国からの輸入苗なので、管理意識が異なるのでしょう。中国のサイトをいろいろ見ると、地平線に向かってはてしなく広がる苗畑で新苗が大量生産されています。出荷の写真を見ると、まるでかまどにくべる柴を束ねたかのようにカラカラの苗が山積みにされています。それが日本に持ち込まれる際、完全に土を落とさなければならないので、さらに根っこがダメージを受けます。

The reason why I am convinced that this plant is alive is that, when I pour water over the tree trunk, the skin looks really fresh and greenish.  Now, the skin of this plant is breached by bugs in many places, but I think the plant will survive.

As to bug damages, this variety is imported direct from China, where they have vast farm fields growing newly grafted plants.  They cannot look after each plant like they do with the one that arrived today.  The plant I got today is a variety that has been traded in Japan for so many years that it is now domestically produced.

この苗の継目を見ると、まるで台木が穂木に飲み込まれているような状態。そこで、深植えにして穂木からも根っこが出てくるように工夫しました。台木の根っこの状態はどうでも、この穂木が生きていると確信するのは、やはり水をぶっかけた瞬間、写真のように緑色の樹肌が見えてくるからです。
When I got this plant in March, I noticed that the root stock had been 'swallowed up' by the scion tree.  I have planted it so that the scion tree could start growing its own roots.  This may not be a proper way to do, but what I need now is to ensure the survival of this plant.  I think it is alive because, when I pour water over the plant, the skin at the base looks very green.

タイガの脂肪腫 Taiga's lipoma

 タイガの胸にできていた脂肪の塊を全身麻酔手術で取ってもらいました。

I had the lipoma on Taiga's chest removed under general anaesthetic surgery.

公園で At the park

 夕飯の支度をしようとしていたら、ふとタイガの視線を感じました。タイガは台所は立ち入り禁止になっているので、廊下から無言で「さんぽ」を訴えかけています。昨日の夜から今日の午前中まで雨だったので、運動不足気味かも。

As I was thinking of what to prepare for supper, I felt Taiga's eyes on my back.  She is not allowed to come into the kitchen so she was watching me from just outside, trying to tell me that she wanted to go for a walk.  It rained last night and during this morning, so she was short of exercise.

夕飯の材料をだいたい決めてから散歩に出ました。柿の木広場に着くと、ベルギーの犬が３頭いました。

まずはタイガの大好きなルイ君。タービュレンで、タイガよりも１歳若い幼馴染です。

Having decided the ingredients for supper, we went out for an evening walk.  On arriving at the Persimmon Park, we saw 3 Belgian dogs.

This is Louis, Taiga's boyfriend since they were puppies.  He is one year younger than Taiga so he must be 10 years old now.

他の２頭はグローネンダールの女の子。そのうちの１歳半の若い子がタイガにちょっかいをかけたくてウズウズしています。

The other two were female Groenendaels.  One of them, aged 1 1/2 years old, was itching to play with Taiga.

鼻にかすり傷があります。飼い主さんによると、猛スピードで走っているうちに木に衝突して擦りむいたそうです。

She has a scar on her nose, having run into a tree at a great speed.

この子は一緒に飼われている、もっと大人の女の子で落ち着いていますが、タイガよりは若い。

The other girl was much quieter but she is a few years younger than Taiga.

グローネンの幼いほうがタイガを挑発して追いかけっこが始まりました。私は本能的にタイガにカメラの焦点を合わせてしまうので、遥かに高速で走るグローネンの子がピンボケに写ります。

The younger Groenendael provokes Taiga into playing.  I instinctively follow Taiga with my camera and the Groenendael running at a much faster speed tends to be blurred.

満11歳のタイガが疲れて休んでいても、グローネンが獲物を狙うようにタイガの周りをグルグル回っています。

Taiga at 11 years old has to stop from time to time but the younger dog circles around her like watching a prey.

ルイ君を巻き込むようにぶつかってきました。

She now wants to pull Louis into the game, too.

ルイ君はおもちゃを口からぶら下げたままで走っています。顔に当たって痛くないのかと、人間たちは笑っていました。

日本ナツメなど Japanese jujube etc

 日本ナツメに1輪だけ開花が見られました。たったの１輪でも、顔を近づけると良い香り。私にとって５月の3大芳香は、開花の順に、シナノキ（科の木）、スイカズラ、ナツメです。海外の情報によると、ナツメは7月以降の高温の時期に開花したものが着果につながるとのことです。これは私自身、痛感しています。５-6月の開花からの幼果はほぼ全て落ちて、７月以降の2度目の開花で実がとどまるというのが、練馬区の気候での経験です。

I found a flower this morning on the Japanese jujube tree.  Although it is only one flower, the scent is really good.  For me, this is one of the 3 fragrant flowers of May, together with Japanese linden and honeysuckle.  

According to the information I picked up overseas, flowers opening during the hot climate of July-August have a better chance of fruit setting, whereas young fruits from May-June flowering tend to fall off.  From my experience, I agree totally with this.

この苗は今年の３月に練馬の園芸店で買った小苗ですが、主幹が25cm以上伸びてきました。数苗棚に並んでいたうち、この苗は根元がグラグラしていましたが、最も樹姿が真っ直ぐだったので選びました。帰宅して鉢から出してみると、予想どおり、棚に並べる直前にその鉢に植え付けたばかりの根っこで土が全部落ちてきました。よって、迷うことなく10号鉢に植え替えることができました。

I bought this small plant in March this year at a shop near the Nerima Ward Office.  Already, the plant is more than 25 cm taller than originally and has lots of flower buds.  Among the several jujube plants on the shelf I saw that day, this one was unstable at the base, which I suspected was because it had been put into that pot just before being placed on the shelf.  However, I chose this for its straight tree trunk.  When I came home, I took it out of the pot and confirmed that the roots did not hold the soil in the pot.  So, I replanted it in a much larger, 30 cm pot and it has been doing well.

 

去年の春に買ったコーネリアンチェリーのカザンラクは順調に育っています。鉢植え管理で実を着けさせたいので、枝は短く切っています。園芸店で見かける日本のサンシュユは、直径15cmほどの鉢で、しかも土はカチカチ。その厳しい環境では枝を短く剪定・維持して開花させるのは容易に見えますが、10号鉢と十分な肥料だと、どうしても枝が伸び伸びになります。

The Cornus mas "Kazanlak" that I bought in spring last year is doing well. Since I want to grow this plant in a pot, I keep the branches short and close to the centre of the tree.  However, with a large pot and plenty of fertiliser, the tree is too vigorous to be kept small.

ナツメ同様、虫が着かず健康そうな葉っぱです。花芽の分化は７月頃だそうで、その近辺では水やりを控えると花芽の分化が起きやすい、という内容の記事を読んだことがあります。なので、６月の梅雨どきは屋内にひっこめるかも。

As with the jujube plant, this tree is free of harmful bugs.  According to the information on the internet, flower buds for next year will start to form in July, and watering should be kept to the minimum around that time.  Now, our rainy season lasts from late May to early July.  Therefore, I may pull the plant indoors to avoid excessive watering during that period.
