公園で At the park

 公園への川沿いの道、東南アジアでよく見かけたオレンジ色の花が咲く低木があります。雑草の刈込作業があると根本からバッサリ切られるのですが、すぐに復活して毎年花を咲かせます。

On our way to the park, there is a bush with orange flowers.  I remember seeing this tree everywhere when I was working in the South East Asia.  When they clear the overgrown undergrowth, they cut this tree down to the ground and yet it comes back just like a weed.

東京の冬はこの植物にとって厳しいのと、園芸苗のように肥料をもらっているわけではないので、花数は少ないです。たぶん、元々は園芸店で買った人が、処分するにあたりここに植えたのでしょう。他にアボカド苗など不自然なものが、ある日突然現れることがあります。

Winter in Tokyo is too cold for this plant but it survives without even fertiliser.

近くで見ると結構綺麗です。

Quite pretty flowers.

花を見ていたら通りがかった子犬。生後4か月のヨーキーの仔犬。非常にフレンドリーで、タイガに近づきたいのですが、興奮しすぎなのでタイガが引いています。

As I was looking at the orange flowers, a tiny Yorkie came along.  At 4 months old, he is too excited for Taiga.

ボーイフレンドのゴロウがやってきました。タイガはすっかりゴロウのストーカーになってしまって、一日に一回はゴロウの家の前まで私を引っ張っていきます。

サルナシの棚の日陰で一休み。

As we were having a rest under the shade of baby Kiwi vines, Goro, my neighbour's Labrador mix, joined us.

仲良くオヤツをもらいます。

フレンチブルドッグのホップ君が通りがかりました。これからドッグランへ向かうようです。最近知ったことですが、ホップ君も意外とうちの近くに住んでいるようです。

このカート、随分としっかりした作りのようなので、ゴロウママも私も興味津々。いつかは必要になるものなので今から情報収集です。

帰ろうとしたら、近所の紀州犬、ウメちゃんがやって来ました。ウメちゃんの家はうちと同じ道の並びで目と鼻の先ですが、散歩の時間帯が違うので頻繁には会えません。

As we were about to leave, Ume, a female Kishu Ken, arrived.  She lives on the same road as mine, and only a stone's throw away.

ウメとタイガは大の仲良しですが、ゴロウとはビミョーな関係で、この写真のときは一触即発の瞬間。

Ume and Taiga are great friends, but Ume's attitude towards Goro is sometimes volatile - she turns aggressive towards him quite out of the blue.

騒ぎが収まって、ニコニコ顔に戻ったウメ。

お惣菜パン Savory Buns

 ベビーホタテが好きなのでいろんなものに使います。今回は缶詰のツナがパンの底に入っていて、ホタテの味を引き立てています。

Scallops are my favourite seafood and thse buns are particularly nice with tuna lining at the bottom.

スモモ：エレファントハート Plum: Elephant Heart

 エレファントハートは地植えにして初年度なので収穫は期待していなかったのですが、いくつかコガネに落とされたあと最終的に４個だけ残りました。もうそろそろ、と思って毎朝チェックしていたところ、今朝は１個なくなっていました。

The "Elephant Heart" plant, a variety from the US, used to be in a pot but I planted it in the garden early this year.  So, I was not expecting any fruits this year but 4 of them survived up to now.  However, I could not see one of them this morning.

地面を探したら、ありました。

I found it on the ground.

最近の台風の雨で裂果していたので、残りの３個も収穫。

I picked the remaining 3, since it is nearly the harvest time.

重さは101gで、購入元のサイトにある200-250gには遥かに及びません。

According to the catalogue, the fruit should reach 200-250g, but mine is nowhere near.

幅は5.5cm。

地面に落ちていたのを割って味見。収穫直後なので多少、青臭さが感じられますが、味自体はスモモらしい旨味があります。では、スモモらしくないのがあるのか、というと、貴陽やビッグパープルは、スモモとプルーンの中間的な味だと思っています。ちなみに、ビッグパープルは、イシドウで以前はプラムのページに載せてありましたが、今見るとプルーンに分類されているようです。

最近暑さが和らいだので、今朝パッションフルーツの開花が再開しました。今日の花数は5輪。さっそく授粉しておきました。年内にはこのツルを処分するので、それまでにどこまで育つか楽しみです。

The passion fruit plant has started to flower, as the weather is no longer extremely hot.  It will be interesting to see how far the new fruits will go before December, when it will be too cold for this plant to survive outside.

公園で At the park

 先日やっと草刈りがされた四中横の広場。刈った後の草丈がガタガタです。いつもの草刈り用の車ではなく、人が機械を左右に振りながらこの広大な草地を刈っていた結果です。２，３回雨が降ればまたボウボウになりそうですが、とりあえず今は歩きまわれる状態。

We went to the field where they were cutting the grass the other day.  Unfortunately, the grass is not smooth - the lawn mower vehicle is out of order and they cut the grass mannually with the thing that you hang from your shoulder.

タイガも嬉しそう。

At least Taiga is enjoying herself.

数日前にシャンプーしたばかりなのに草風呂でゴロゴロ。

She starts rolling about, forgetting that she had her shampoo only a few days ago.

気配を感じてガバっと起き上がりました。

近所のジャックラッセルのマーク君です。タイガが子犬のとき公園デビューした日に会って以来、大の仲良しです。

Mark, my neighbour's Jack Russell Terrier, has arrived.  They met on the day when Taiga came to the park for the first time as a puppy.  They have been fast friends ever since.

ケシの実のケーキ Poppy Seed Cake

 ブルーポピーシードでケーキを作りました。フワフワ生地に膨らませる秘訣は重曹と酸の反応で、焼きあがると元の2倍になります。生地はしっとりフワフワ。

I made a blue poppy seed cake.  Due to the baking soda and acidity reaction, the size of the baked cake became double the original amount of the batter.  The txture is very moist and fluffy.

シャンプー後の散歩 A walk after shampoo

 今日は言葉にならないほど蒸し暑くて、午後に散歩など絶対したくない日でしたが、タイガの獣臭がかなりキツくなっていたのでシャンプーしたあと、ご褒美の散歩。城北公園のクロネコヤマトの向いの草地まで何とか辿り着いて、ベンチで一休みすることにしました。草ボウボウなのでベンチが埋もれそうです。

It was a sultry afternoon today and going out for a walk was the last thing I wanted to do.  However, Taiga's smell was getting rather strong, so I gave her a shampoo, after which we went out to the park.  The grass was growing so vigorously that the benches were almost buried.

一休みイコール、タイガのオヤツです。この出っ腹でオヤツ？と思うかもしれませんが、

It being one of Taiga's treat spot, she got up onto the bench with an hopeful smile.

タイガの期待を裏切ることはできません。嬉しそうに待っています。

She waits patiently with a happy smile, as I fumble through my bag.

道を挟んで隣の四中横の草地では、ついに草刈りが実行されていました。ここは間もなく恒例の防災訓練が行われるので必要にせまられて、のようです。都合はどうあれ、とにかく嬉しい。

In the field across the street, they were cutting the grass - at last!  However, they are doing this, not for the benefit of park users, but because they have the annual fire drill soon which is a big event.  Nevertheless, this is good news for us dog owners.

挿し木で来年用にパッションフルーツの苗を２本作っておいたのを、昨日の霧雨のなか、鉢増ししました。雨の日にこれをすると、植物が弱らずにすみます。

I made two new passion fruit plants from cuttings for next year.  The plant on the balcony with fruits will come to the end of its service before winter, and these two plants will be spending the winter indoors.

これから越冬用の樹形作りです。今伸びているツルを切り戻して子ヅルを沢山出して、その上で春までに孫ヅルを出しておくと、来年の初夏にはグングン育つでしょう。Youtubeでオーストラリアの個人の庭の様子を見た事あります。その動画ではパッションフルーツのツルが日本の葛のツルのように広い庭にはびこっていました。気候が合っているので地植えのままですが、どの品種も５年くらいで寿命という扱いだそうです。

こちらは今年の５月末に某ネットショップがセールをしていた「トゲ無しリスボン」です。うちには「リスボン」として数年前に買った苗があり、それは完全にトゲ無しなので何も追加で買うこともないはずですが、あまりの安さに「保険苗」として注文しました。届いた苗を見て笑ってしまいました。赤い輪で囲まれている３枚のシルバーの葉っぱ以外、「葉っぱ無しリスボン」でした。しかも５月末なのに素掘り苗。諺の「安かろう、悪かろう」が頭をよぎりましたが、意地でも再生させてやる、と頑張ってここまできました。

A new thornless Lisbon lemon that I bought recently.  I already have another, which I got several years ago, but lemons are such useful fruits and I cannot have enough.

こちらは去年の秋にスーパーで買ったキーライムの種から育てたもの。数鉢ありますが、この苗が最も樹高があり40cmくらいになっています。しっかりした枝が採取できるくらいになったら、地植えのベルガモットなどに高接ぎして収穫を急ぐ予定です。

This is one of the seedlings from the Key lime fruits that I consumed in autumn last year.  When the plant grows large enough to produce viable scions, I am going to graft them onto the Bergamot plant so as to quicken the time for fruiting.
