高温障害？ Too hot for butterfly pea plant?

最高気温が37-38℃が続くなか、南向きバルコニーに置いてあったバタフライピーの苗がとうとう干からびてしまいました。バタフライピーは東南アジアの植物なので日当たりの良いバルコニーで最近までスクスク育って、花も数輪咲いたのですっかり安心していました。でも、この暑さでバルコニーはきつすぎたようです。

対して、となりに置いてあるケイパーはいたって元気で、届いたときの10cm未満から今では30cmくらいに伸びています。なにしろド根性の植物なのでこの環境は、水はカラカラ、日光はギラギラのシチリア島よりも育ちやすいかも。テレビドラマ「モンタルバーノ　～　シチリアの人情刑事」の風景を思い出します。

The maximum temperature has been hovering around 37-38℃ for the last several days in Tokyo.  For the butterfly pea plant on the balcony facing the south, this proved to be too much, although the plant originates in South East Asia.  In contrast, the caper plant next to the butterfly pea is doing exceptionally well and it has grown to about 30cm, 3 times the size when delivered to me.

こちら↓は種から育てているバタフライピー。せっかちな性格なので、もう成長に向けた環境を整えてあります。門の外に置いてありますが、東向き、直射日光が当たるのは午後１時くらいまでなので、ちょうど良いかも。

This pot contains butterfly pea plants that I grew from seeds.  I placed the pot outside of the gate, facing the east, and it gets direct sunlight up to early hours in the afternoon.  Well, I have prepped the environment already, so the seedlings can start growing fast at any time.  Then, this setup will become less of an eyesore.

今年の栽培ヒット商品はこれ。パッションフルーツの中では最も普及しているエドゥリス。悪く言えば最もありふれているのかもしれませんが、美味しさ、育て易さ、実のサイズなど、どれをとっても100点満点だと思っています。しかも、寝室のガラス戸の外で緑のカーテンとして良く機能しています。

ただし、この暑さのなか、毎日6-7回の水やりが欠かせません。根本にたっぶり水やりして鉢から水漏れが始まったら、今度は受け皿が溢れるまで水を入れます。これを夜寝る直前にも行いますが、翌朝には受け皿が空っぽ。受け皿の水が無くなる前に補充しないと、実がシワシワになります。昼間の暑さで鉢の水が沸騰するヒマもなく水分が吸い上げられています。

The passion fruit plant outside my bedroom upstairs continues to do well in this heat.  The only snag is that I have to ensure that the plant never runs out of water, which means I have to water it 6-7 times from early morning to just before going to bed.  Even then, the plastic tray underneath the pot is empty at 6 am in the morning.  The speed with which the water gets absorbed is so fast that you do not have to worry about the water boiling inside the pot under the midday sun.

まだ１個も黒く色づいていませんが、ツブが揃い始めているので、一気に熟すのでしょうか。その場合、果肉をジャムのように保存すれば長く利用できそうです。ひとつ気づいたことは、この暑さで花の受粉が停止しています。手作業で授粉しても、花は翌朝には干からびて落ちています。そうだとすると、多く収穫したければ梅雨が終わる前にたくさん開花するように苗の成長を調整する必要があります。

None of the fruits are turning dark on the outside yet, but the size is gradually becoming uniform.  One thing I have noticed: with the weather turning so hot, it seems the flowers have ceased to be receptive - I pollinate the flowers manually but the fruits have not been setting these last several days when the max. temperature has been around 37-38℃.

バルコニーの大苗は今度の冬には処分する予定なので、挿し木苗を２本作りました。夏の間に大きくして室内越冬させれば、来年の結実が可能だと思います。園芸店に行けばこれくらいの小苗なら250円くらいで買えると思いますが、挿し木で簡単に根付くので、最初の苗のリサイクルだと思って育てています。

I made 2 cuttings from the plant on the balcony for next year.  The existing plant on the balcony will be replaced by these at the end of this year.  I am hoping that these will grow mature enough to be flowering before it gets too hot next summer.

その隣に置いてあるプチマル金柑。3年目の今年は沢山の実が生りそうです。この時期だと他の柑橘類の開花が無いので種無しは確実です。うちにはニンポウ系の苗もあって今満開ですが、それは東向きバルコニーに置いて、プチマルから隔離しています。

The seedless kumquat is in full bloom.  This being the 3rd year, the plant seems ready to produce a lot of fruits.  Apart from a kumquat plant of another variety which I keep on the balcony (also in full bloom currently), there are no other citrus plants flowering now, so the fruits from this plant will certainly be seedless.  Seedless and twice as sweet as mandarins, this plant is very valuable.

ソーセージ・リングパン Sausage slice bread ring

 ビアソーセージという極薄のソーセージがありますが、これを使ってリングパンを作りました。チーズも入って結構味が濃いので、サラダと一緒に食べると十分ランチになると思います。

Bread ring with sausage slices, flavoured by grated cheese, cajun seasoning and garlic.  It is very flavourful and you only need a plate of salad to make satisfying lunch.

卵白のケーキ Cake with egg whites: no yolks

 お菓子作りをしていると、用途の広い卵黄に比べて卵白が余ってしまうことがよくあります。そこで、卵黄なしで美味しいケーキになるようレシピを工夫。

I am often left with surplus egg whites after preparing sweets, so I worked on a recipe to make a delicious cake without egg yolks.

バタフライピーフラワー Butterfly Pea flower

 先日買ったばかりのバタフライピーのツルに第１花が咲きました。朝一に見たときは咲き始めで若干、紫色が入っていて落胆しましたが、お昼頃には私好みの濃い青になっていました。

The butterfly pea plant I bought several days ago has already has flower buds and the first one opened this morning.

苗のラベルには「八重咲」とありましたが、厳密には二重咲きでYouTubeなどで見たとおりです。

It is a beautiful deep blue colour.

隣に置いてあるのは今年の春に買ったケイパー苗。やっと草丈が20cmほどになりました。原産地のシチリア島の映像をYouTubeで見ると、ど根性で護岸用の岩の間からワサワサ湧き出しているので、相当丈夫な植物のようです。

The pot sitting next to the butterfly pea is the caper plant I bought earlier this year.  It has grown to be about 20cm, double the original size.  This is a tough plant and it should grow fast during the summer.

花をさっそくお茶にしてみます。

ここで落ち着いたようです。飲んでみると、ほのかに甘い味がします。このままでも、アントシアニンがもたらす効能を考えるとハーブティーとして十分飲めますが、

It seems ready for tasting.  There is a bit of sweetness and I could enjoy it on its own - good herbal tea when you consider the effects of anthocyanin.

試しにステビアの芽を摘んで入れてみたら、甘くて美味しくなりました。もっと咲いたら、ハチミツを入れたりして楽しみます。夏は冷たい飲み物にすると、青い色が効果的。

ちなみに、日本ではバタフライピーは一年草に分類されていますが、春先に見事な大輪のボケを咲かせていた家の方は、去年買った八重咲バタフライピーの苗を室内管理で越冬させたそうで、その苗を見せたもらったら苗の下のほうは木質化していました。ちょうど、うちの八重咲ジャスミンの苗と同じです。なので私もこの苗を多年草として世話します。

However, I plucked a tiny bit of stevia to see how the taste changes.  With more sweetness, the taste was considerably improved.  I am looking forward to having this blue tea throughout this summer, sometimes, as cold drinks.  A neighbour of mine showed me her butterfly pea plant that she bought in summer last year.  She kept it indoors during the winter and the plant turned semi-woody and strong - that is what I am going to do in winter.

ベークウェルタルト Bakewell Tart

 ローガンベリーのワイマテが収穫時期に入っているので、タルトに活用しました。タルトの底にワイマテで作ったジャムを敷いて、飾りには新鮮なベリーを使ってあります。

Loganberry, "Waimate", is in season right now, so I made a bakewell tart.  The berries are used in the jam and for garnish.

パッションフルーツ（続） Passion fruits

パッションフルーツの幼果が次々と肥大しています。第２花の実のサイズは第１花の実に追いついて６センチ超えになりました。ここへ来てこの２個の実の肥大がストップしたので、今後は果皮が黒く色づいて熟すでしょう。

The young fruits of the passion fruit plant are growing rapidly.  The fruit in the photo below is from the second flower, and has caught up with the fruit of the first flower.  Since they have stopped growing at this size, I think they are waiting to turn black on the outside before ripening.

昨日と一昨日は雨で授粉作業をさぼりました。既に実が着き過ぎるほどあるので、わざわざ雨の中で授粉することもないからです。キウイ棚はキットで買って組み立てたものですが、大活躍です。

It rained heavily for the last 2 days and I had a welcome break from the task of pollinating the flowers.  I already have more than enough fruits and there are tens more flower buds growing.

ハーブ苗など Herbs etc

 昨日、スーパーからの帰りに覗いてみた武蔵野病院近くの園芸店で見つけたバタフライピーの苗。うちの種から育てている苗は気候のせいか、まだ数センチにしかなっていません。じれったいのと、苗がリーズナブルな値段だったのとで、試しに１個買ってみました。

I bought a butterfly pea plant at a nursery on my way home from shopping yesterday.  I have little butterfly plants growing from seeds, but they are no taller than 5cm even now.  So, I wanted to secure a plant that was sure to flower reasonably soon.

しかも、八重咲のほうです。昨日の夕方に鉢植えにして、今朝みたら元気にバルコニーのラティスに絡まっていました。

To my delight, this is a double-petal variety.

今朝は、練馬の渋谷園芸本店までチャリをこいで行ってきました。入荷したら知らせてもらうことになっていたモリンガ苗が目的でしたが、ついでにもう一品種、コブミカン苗も見かけたので一緒に持ち帰り。方角的に練馬駅よりもうちから遠い店なので、年に一度行くか行かないかです。

This morning, I had a call from another nursery telling me that moringa plants had arrived - I made the request last month.  I also got a kaffir lime plant which was on the shelf nearby.

帰宅してさっそくコブミカンの葉っぱを一枚むしって匂いを嗅いでみたら、柑橘類の葉というよりは薬のような臭いでびっくり。木が育ったら、自分流のスープに入れてみます。

モリンガのほうは、茎が茶色のと緑色のとがあって、いずれは木質化するとは分かっていてもどちらにするか決められなかったので、１本ずつ買ってしまいました。両方ともうまく育てば料理に沢山使えます。

There were moringas with brown stems, and others with green stems.  I know that they will all grow woody eventually, but I could not make up my mind which one to choose.  So, I got one of each, just in cake one type was stronger than the other.  Moringas are said to contain many kinds of nutrition and I shall be using the leaves in my cooking and they will not be wasted.

オニユリの蕾が分かるようになってきました。夏の花なので、まだまだ小さな蕾です。左は、オニユリ独特のポツポツのない、無点かつ黄花のオニユリ（マニアックな世界）。右は、冬の間にスーパーで買った食用ユリを数個の塊に分解して植えつけたものですが、一か所からのみ芽が出ました。

Flower buds of tiger lilies are coming out.  They are both in their first year.  The one on the left should have yellow flowers with no spots, while the one on the right is the normal tiger lily with red flowers and dark spots.  I bought the one on the right in the supermarket as food for cooking.

黄花のほうには、オニユリの典型的なムカゴがじゃらじゃら出ています。増えてくれなくても良いから球根が太って、来年以降沢山の花をつけて欲しいです。

The one on the left already has a lot of bulbils, which is typical of tiger lillies.

これがその素芯黄花オニユリの蕾。今から楽しみです。

These buds will grow into yellow flowers without spots.

こちらはスーパーのほう。普通のオニユリなのか、コオニユリなのか、まだ分かりません。(追：両者の違いについてググってみたら、コオニユリのほうはムカゴを着けないそうです。ということは、これはコオニユリのようです。また、オニユリよりもコオニユリのほうが美味しいので、スーパーで普通に売られているのはコオニユリのほうだそうです。)

日本酒ケーキ Japanese Sake Cake

 日本酒入りのケーキを焼きました。もともと下戸でおまけに日本酒とは縁がないのですが、一度は作ってみたかったケーキです。辛口のアルコール度数14%ですが、生地に入れて焼いた分はアルコールが飛んでいるし、焼きあがったケーキにハケ塗りした分は、一晩なじませておいたら不思議と存在感が無くなりました。でも、それは私の鼻がすっかりマヒしてしまっていたからのようで、ご近所にあげたら「あー、いい匂い！」と、ラップの上からでも分かったようです。ちなみに、ケーキの底にある黒っぽいポツポツは、和風を強調するために甘納豆を入れました（前の晩から酒漬けにして使用）。

I made a sponge cake with sake for flavouring.  For this purpose, a dry type of sake is said to be the best.  

パッションフルーツ棚の延長 Extension to passion fruit scaffolding

 パッションフルーツの生育が良すぎてキウイ棚だけでは足りない状況です。そこで、園芸用の2.1mの支柱を使って物干し竿に橋掛けしました。これで面積が激増です。その影響で真下に置いてある大雪棗が半日陰になる予定ですが、大実系のナツメは鉢植えではどうも実が着きにくいので大したロスにはならないでしょう。

The existing structure for the passion fruit plant is fast becoming too small.  So, I made a bridge between the passion fruit scaffolding and the gate-looking structure beyond (it is a part of the structure for hanging out laundry).  As a result, the passion fruit scaffolding has expanded significantly.

この写真の右の実は今年の第一花からのもの。すでにL卵よりも大きいです。もう少ししたら実の形状が三角っぽく突っ張って、その後に果皮が黒く色づくでしょう。

The fruit on the right is from the first flower of this year.  It is already much larger than an L-sized chicken egg.

蕾の出方は節の間が詰まっていて、その分豊作になりそう。

The distance between flowers is very short, which means that a vine is packed with flowers.

毎日の授粉作業が大変です。最近までの猛暑のような日光のなかでの作業は、手の甲がヤケドしそうなほどでした。かといって、試しに一輪の花を授粉しないでその後の様子を見たら翌日には干からびたので、人口授粉は必須です。

We had a spell of very hot weather recently and it was hard work to pollinate - the back of my hands felt burning under the intense sun.

ローガンベリーのワイマテが少しずつ色づいています。カメムシはまだ稀にしか見かけないので被害は受けなさそう。

'Waimate' loganberries are starting to ripen.

家の北側で、決して日光に恵まれていませんが良く育ちます。ツルは数メートルに伸びて、一株からとは思えないくらい繁茂しています。

It is hard to believe that all this is from just one cluster/stock - the canes simply kept growing.  Even though this is on the northside of my house, the plant does not seem to suffer from the lack of direct sun.

さっそく試食。激スッパでした。去年の実がまだ冷凍庫にあるので早く消費しなければ。

They look tempting, but the taste is quite tart.  This variety is suitable for cooking.

フェイジョアが満開。この写真だけを見ると、まるでのどかな農園で暮らしているかのような景色ですが、夕方の逆光線の関係で背景がボケただけです。

Feijoa plants are in full bloom.  They are such attractive flowers with a hint of tropics.
