公園で At the park

 公園に着いたところで久しぶりに会ったシーズーのアース君、4歳。私を見つけて飛び跳ねるように走ってきました。

When we arrived at the park, we were met by Earth, a male Shih Tzu, 4 years old.  He came rushing towards me since we had not seen each other for some time.

決してオヤツを期待しているのではなく単にペロッとしただけ。マツゲが長いです。

He is not expecting any treats from me, just overjoyed.  He has such long eyelashes.

コートを短くトリミングしてあるので、体を撫でると暖かい。これは蓑毛で覆われている和犬とは大違いです。

His coat is always perfectly in shape.  His coat being trimmed short, his body is so warm when I stroke him - very different from Japanese dogs with a double coat.

尻尾はライオンカット。いつ会っても完璧なトリミング状態なので、トイプードル並みにメンテナンス費が大変そうです。

His tail is done in a lion style.

一緒にいた子は時々見かけたことのある、プードルのアンちゃん、13歳だそうです。とてもスリムですが、骨格的にはタイガと同等なので、この大きさと年齢でこのコンディションなら非常に良好だと思います。

This is Anne, 13-year old Poodle.  She looks in good condition, considering her size.  Her body is almost the same length as Taiga's, although Taiga has a lot more flesh on her.

When Anne started really checking Taiga's smell, Taiga got a little tense with the hair on her back standing.

以前、スーパーで売られていた食用のゆり根。２個買って、１個は試しに植えてみましたが、そのうち片鱗挿しの方。食用の状態では真っ白だったのが、ガラス戸越しに日に当たっているうちに赤紫になってきました。触ってみるとパンパンなので生きているようです。

The edible lily's scales have turned from snow white to purplish red now.  Since I have never tried this method of propagation, I am looking forward to see what happens in the spring.

もしかして春になると下のほうで根っこが生えてくるのでしょうか。

去年、キーライム（マナオ）でライムタルトを作った際、余った実をほぐして種を取り出し撒きました。11月下旬頃に発根が始まりましたが、その後が難しかった。種は湿った用土の中でホットカーペットに温められながら発根するまでは簡単。その後、地上部に出てくる双葉が寒すぎて中々肥大しないため、種の皮を破って出て来られないというのが問題でした。殻を被ったまま双葉が腐るものが続出。そこでピンセットを使って殻を取り除こうとすると、双葉の一部が殻にくっついていて殻と一緒にもげてしまうという問題がありました。結局、満足に生き残ったのは7個で、小さな2個はそのうち消滅するかもしれません。現状、どの鉢の芽も既に双葉は終わっています。

These are seedlings from the Key limes that were left over after making a lime tart in autumn last year.  Currently, 7 good ones and 2 iffy ones.  

It was easy to get roots since the seeds were in the moist soil which was warmed by the electric carpet underneath.  However, when the cotyledon came out, they would not grow as expected - the air above the ground was too cold for them even with the electric carpet.

This result does not bother me very much since I only need one good potted plant to grow.  Therefore, I will keep 2-3 strongest ones eventually.  At any rate, the most vulnerable stage is over and the seedlings will grow strong once the weather turns warm in April.

この鉢の左のはそのうちリストラになると思います。双葉が両方とももげて、その後に出て来た本葉が３枚。双葉の栄養をもらっていないので弱弱しいです。

この鉢の左のも同じく双葉なしで成長したもの。

この鉢のはどれも元気そうです。発芽の時期がこれらの苗にとって最も危険でしたが、それを乗り越えて２月中旬になったので一安心。4月以降に暖かくなればグングン育つでしょう。

公園で At the park

 昨夜から今朝にかけてずっとテレビを見ていたあと、家の前の道の雪掻きをしてから寝たので、公園に着いたときはもう正午でした。天気が良いので途中の道路の雪は既に溶けていましたが、公園の草地には薄っすらと残っていました。写真中央の親子連れが雪だるまを作っていたので近づいてみました。

As forecast, it did snow yesterday.  However, the snow was very wet and heavy and it was obvious that it would not last.  Nevertheless, I cleared the snow on the street in front of my house so that passersby would not slip.  The snow had almost gone by noon today when we arrived at the park (I got up very, very late).

The family in the middle of the photo below were building a snowman, so we approached them.

We headed towards the upper part of the park, walking through the woodland.

公園上のほうにある陸上競技場。もう人影は少ないので、後に残された雪だるまの数のほうが多いです。

The athletic sports field at the top of the hill.  It being lunchtime, few people were left and there were more snow structures than people.

真横から見ると鼻や歯のついた口が丁寧に作られていた様子がうかがえます。

when you look at it from the sideway, you can see the nose and upper lip with teeth showing.  They must have worked hard to build this.

私が雪だるまを見て回っているあいだ、タイガはじっと待っていました。陸上競技場はワンコ禁止です。

Taiga was waiting for me patiently while I was in the field.  Dogs are now permitted in the field.

帰ろうとしてさっきの草地に戻るとカンタがいました。最近、カンタの態度がデカイ。顔を合わせると、年上のタイガのほうが甘えるしぐさで挨拶します。今朝はタイガが挨拶中にカンタが軽く唸ったので、私が叱りつけてやりました。

On our way home, we saw Kanta walking.  Lately, Kanta has become rather arrogant.  When Taiga and Kanta meet, Taiga behaves like a puppy although she is some 3 years older than Kanta.  He even growled slightly when Taiga was greeting him, so I put him down.  I am not taking it.

モルトシロップでリーンなパン Lean bread with malt syrup

 これまで粉末のモルトでパンやダイジェスティブビスケットを作ったことがありましたが、イマイチその効果が実感できませんでした。そこで液状のモルトを試してみました。日本では「ユーロモルト」という名で売られているイタリア産のもので、これはたぶん商標登録された商品名？　実態は、抽出したモルトを乾燥させて粉末状にする前の状態です。

動画に使った生地と同時に、モルトではなく微量の砂糖でドライイーストを活性化させた生地も作りました。結果は、宣伝文句どおり、モルトシロップ入りのほうが焼き色が良いし窯伸びもバツグンでした。ハード系パンにはぴったりです。

In the past, I had tried malt powder for lean breads and digestive biscuits but could not see much difference.  So, I thought I would give it a try with malt syrup as the last resort.  The result was amazing - the oven spring was quite powerful.

春めいて Nearly spring

 明日はまた東京でも雪が降るそうです。そうとは思えないくらい暖かい日差しの中の朝散歩。途中の軒下で綺麗な紅梅が咲いていました。

 Flowering plum (Red Ume) tree already in bloom.  They say that it will snow in Tokyo tomorrow - hard to believe walking in warm air on a sunny morning.

甘い香りに、実家にあった石鹸を思いだしました。

The sweet fragrance of the blossoms is overpowering, and it reminded me of the bars of soap we used to use at home when I was a child.

夏みかんの木はこの桜台地区でよく見かけます。

Japanese oranges (Citrus natsudaidai) are cold-hardy and grow well in Tokyo.

自宅近くの木にメジロのつがいが、ほんの数秒間だけいました。うちの庭に来て欲しい。

Close to my house, I spotted a pair of Japanese White Eyes.  I wish they would come to my garden.

They are tiny birds weighing only 11g, and they never stay still.

うちの庭には毎朝オレンジの半割を吊るしてありますが、ヒヨかムクドリがやってきて、たまに来るメジロを追いやります。写真の実はブラッドオレンジのモロです。

I hang orange halves out every morning hoping to see White Eyes, but larger birds come and chase them away.  This orange is Moro, one of my blood orange varieties.

リンゴの芽吹きが始まっています（１か所だけですが）。

去年の夏に買った苗ですが、花芽が２，３か所に付いているような気がします。

I bought this plant last summer, and I think I can find a few future buds containing flowers.

赤い果肉の「紅の夢」、矮台に接いであります。片親は紅玉だそうです。うちには一昨年に買った紅玉もあります。

This is a red-fleshed variety, released in recent years.  It is grafted on a dwarf stock.

私が庭の観察をしている間、相変わらず退屈そうなタイガ。

Taiga was bored while I was checking on my plants.

試しに「オヤツ？」と言ってみたら、「どうせウソだろ」と言わんばかりに右目まぶただけを動かしました。

When I said "Treat?", she moved only her right eye lid as if to sat "You don't mean it anyway".

パッションフルーツ Passion Fruit

 去年の真夏に買った実つき苗は、収穫後2，3ヵ月して蕾が出たので５個だけ残して後は摘み取りました。その５個全部が実になりましたが、最初の１個だけ外見は順調で、他のはまだ真っ黒になってもいないのにシワが入り始めました。あまりに深いシワに覆われていたので、うち１個を今日の夕方イジイジしていたら、ポロッと取れてしまいました！　

恐る恐る台所で半割にしてみたら、何と、中身がぎっしり。苗を買ったときに付いていた実は、完熟した状態で実の中心が空洞だったので今日のを見てびっくり。しかも果肉がジューシーそう。未熟ならこんなにゼリー部分が分厚くないはず。

I bought the passion fruit plant in summer last year with a few fruits already on it.  They ripened soon and I enjoyed the fruits.  A few months later in autumn, a lot of new flower buds came out and I kept 5 of them to flower.  They all produced fruits but the cold weather has prevented them from maturing to black outer colour.  Moreover, apart from the fruit from the first flower, the rest of them got wrinkles.  As I was fumbling the second fruit, which had the most wrinkles, it came off!  

When I cut it in half, I was pleasantly surprised to see the inside full of juicy flesh.

味見する前に糖度計を出して測ってみると、14.6%ありました。

Sugar content 14.6%, way lower than expected but cannot be helped considering the climate.

果皮はまだまだ緑色です。この実は4個の花が咲いた、メインのツルの２個目の花からのものです。

This was how it looked on the outside - never expected any juicy inside.

順序は逆になりますが、2階の部屋に戻って現状を写真で記録。➂の実は、別のツルに咲いた３番目の花からのものです。

Doing it in reverse, I went back to the upstairs to take photos of other fruits.

シワが１本もない①の実が部分的に黒く色づいているので楽しみです。➂の実も同じくらい黒くなっていますが、シワだらけ。

The fruit from the first flower is free of wrinkles and I am looking forward to picking it when the outer skin becomes all black.

④と⑤は鶏卵のLサイズで成長が止まったままです。

栗の甘露煮ムース キャラメルソースかけ Sweet chestnut mousse with caramel glazing

 毎年 正月用に栗きんとんを作りますが、その甘露煮がスーパーの棚で目に入ったので買ってきました。キャラメルソースと相性が良さそうなイメージだったので試したら、美味しかったです。

Candied sweet chestnuts are one of my favourite food stuff, and so is caramel sauce.  So, I combined the two.
