秋の気配 Signs of autumn

 毎年ヒガンバナより一足先に開花する、洋物リコリスが咲いています。花柄が大きく、花びらは分厚くてしっかりしているのに加え、濃い黄色の蛍光色で目立ちます。

This lycoris aurea starts flowering ahead of spider lilies.  Its flowers are larger than those of the spider lily and the petals are strong.  Most of all, I love the bright golden colour which I find to be stunningly beautiful.

リコリスの手前には桃花ヒガンバナも上がってきました。こちらは本物のヒガンバナで、デリケートなピンクの花色です。

In front of the lycoris aurea, flower stems of the pink spider lilies are starting to come out of the ground.  In contrast to the red spider lily (lycoris radiata), this variety's colour is delicate pink.

2024年に購入した日本ナツメが色づき始めています。うちでは数種類のナツメを育てていますが、去年 挿し木が成功した日本ナツメ以外はトゲ無しなので管理が楽です。よって、この↓苗もトゲ無し。この苗のヒコバエから育てた２株は写真上のほうのバルコニーに置いてありますが、まだ青々しています。

Fruits of the Japanese jujube tree that I bought in 2024 are turning yellow.  I grow several varieties of jujube and, with the exception of the Japanese jujube tree developed from a cutting last year, all of them are thornless, which makes it easier to look after them.  I have trees developed from the suckers of this tree, and they are peeping out of the trellis in the top part of this photo.  Their fruits are still green.

これくらい色づけば十分甘くてジューシーです。

The fruit is already very sweet and juicy with this much of brown on the skin.

果肉の色を示した写真を載せたくて、なるべく歯形を残さないよう努力しました。この↓ような果肉が白のタイプが私の好みです。

It is rude/bad mannered in Japan to show the bite mark, but I wanted to show the colour of the flesh.  So, I tried to avoid the teeth mark as much as possible.  I like jujubes with milky white flesh like this.

８月24日に購入した売れ残りパッションフルーツとビラフランカレモン苗は、この植え付け時の状態から順調に育っています。

The leftover passion fruit and Villafranca lemon that I bought on 24th August this year have grown significantly from this↓.

パッションフルーツのツルの長さは、元の状態と比べて３倍ちかくに伸びています。

The passion fruit's vine is 3 times that of the original height.

しかも節々に蕾も出ています。冬は室内越冬になるので、できるだけ成長を抑えたいところ。

Moreover, each node has a flower bud.  I will be keeping this plant indoors during the winter, so I hope the plant does not grow too much henceforth.

また、最初から着いていた２個の実のうち小さいほうの実が２倍くらいに肥大しています。

Of the two fruits that were already there when I bought the plant, the smaller fruit has grown visibly.

午後になっても雨が降らなかったので、散歩がてらにタイガのオヤツを買いに出かけました。

Today, it did not rain even in the afternoon, so we went out for a walk and to buy Taiga's treats.

レモン＆パッションフルーツ苗 Lemon and Passion Fruit plants

 スーパーからの帰りに近所のJAを覗いてみたら、値下げ苗につい手が伸びてしまいました。JAは私がいつも買い物するスーパーのすぐ側、そしてうちはJAのすぐ近所なので、ついこういうことになってしまいます。でも、JAの事業再編の動きで２，３年後にはこの桜台のお店が遠く離れた平和台のJAに統合されるそうなので、近所で買えるうちにという気持ちが働いてしまいます。

ということで、右はレモン苗、左はパッションフルーツです。

I looked into the nearby JA on my way home from the supermarket and, before I knew it, my grubby large hands were on these plants.  The JA is located close to the supermarket, and my house is less than 100 meters away from the JA, so this happens often.  However, this will not last forever.  Due to the reorganisation movement of the JA, the outlet near my house will be merged into another one which is in a town far away from where I live.  So, I am taking advantage of the current situation while it lasts.

This morning, I picked up a lemon tree (on the right), and a passion fruit vine (on the left).

レモンはくたびれた状態の苗ですが、回復させる自身があります。

The lemon tree was a leftover and was in a sorry state, but I am confident I will be able to nurse it back to health.

品種はビラフランカ。うちに既にあるリスボン同様、トゲ無しなので扱いやすいです。私は基本的に果樹苗は、接ぎ木された太い一年生苗を買いますが、この苗は大きく育たなくても良いので挿し木苗で十分です。

It is a Villafranca.  As with my Lisbon lemon, this Villafranca is thornless, which makes it easier to handle.  Normally, with fruit trees, I buy a grafted one-year tree with a big trunk so that it will grow healthy and large.  However, I would rather that this tree remained small, growing in a pot, and I am happy with this one grown from a cutting.

パッションフルーツは、最も栽培難易度が低いエドゥリス。以前、この品種をバルコニーに設置した棚に這わせて毎年たくさんの実を収穫していましたが、ナツメ苗がバルコニーを占拠し始めたので一時中断していました。来年はナツメの大苗を庭に下す予定で、棚の再利用ができます。

The passion fruit plant is Edulis, the easiest variety to grow.  For several years, I grew this variety on the upstairs balcony using the shelf that I constructed myself.  It produced abundant fruits every year.  However, as I became keen on growing jujube plants, the balcony has been occupied by them, and I gave up growing passion fruits.  Fortunately, next year, I will be taking down some of the large jujube plants downstairs, leaving room enough for restarting passion fruits.

レモン苗は10号鉢に植え付け。パッションフルーツ苗は、冬の間 2階の部屋で管理になるので、持って階段を上り易いよう小さめの鉢です。

I planted the lemon tree in a pot with 30 cm in diameter.  As to the passion fruit, since I will have to take it upstairs for indoor wintering, I am using a smaller pot until next spring.

植物は鉢増しすると立派に見えるのが嬉しい。

Repotting a plant in a larger container makes it look much better.

種から育てたローゼル２本のうち、片方に花が咲き始めました。去年、JAで買った苗は「レッド」に分類される苗で、花はクリーム色、収穫時のガクの下の部分は緑色でした。今年育てているのは「パープル」に分類されるもので、花はピンク、ガクは全体が赤です。

This is one of the two roselle plants that I am growing from seeds.  This morning, I found two flowers on it.  The roselle plant I bought from the JA last summer was a 'red' type, with yellow flowers and the base of its calyx when ripe was green.  This year, I am growing a 'purple' type, with pink flowers and the whole calyx will be dark red.

あまりに主幹がヒョロヒョロ伸びたので、このあと天辺を摘芯しておきました。

The trunk simply shot up with few branches.  After taking this photo, I pinched the top of the trunk in order to encourage growth of new branches.

パッションフルーツ？ Passion fruits?

 早朝散歩で近所の中学のグランド横で見かけたカラスウリ。イチョウの木に絡まっていますが、すっかり葉っぱが落ちたあとなので実が目立ちます。

This is the vine of snake gourd growing around a ginkgo tree.  With all the leaves gone, the fruits are looking prominent.

形といい、大きさといい、パッションフルーツにそっくりです。

The snake gourd is said to have herbal medicinal uses but, in this day and age, no-one thinks of it as a useful plant. 

Trichosanthes cucumeroides

こちらは去年の11月14日にバルコニーのパッションフルーツのツルを処分したあと、実を取り込んで追熟させておいたものです。外皮が茶色になったものを順次、消費しています。

These are some of the passion fruits that I collected when I cut down the vine in November last year.  The plant served as a 'green curtain' on the balcony during the summer months, next to my bedroom.  These fruits ripen off the tree and I am consuming them as and when they become brown on the outside.  After coming home, I enjoyed some.

今朝の試食。糖度計によると29.8%、実の周辺ではなく真ん中が最も糖度が高くなります。甘味と酸味が煮詰まったような濃厚な味です。

パッションフルーツのツルはグリーンカーテンとしても優秀なので、今年もがんばって育てます。

Sugar content 29.8% - very sweet.  The centre of the fruit is the sweetest.

朝散歩 Morning walk

 近所の家に咲いている目をひく花、「カッシア（インカの輝き）」。春の開花もハデハデですが、秋の花も春に負けない豪華さです。ちなみに、「カッシア（アンデスの乙女）」の開花期は秋だけだそうです。地元JAで今売られているのは「アンデス」のほうです。見た目は似ているけど、「インカ」の花のほうが花柄が大きく、花びらが分厚くしっかりしています。

The cassia blossoms in season in a neighbour's garden.  There are many varieties of cassia in the world, but this one is my favourite.  This variety produces abundant flowers in spring and autumn.

タイガ様の気まぐれで今朝は足を延ばして、かつて豊島園のあった（今はUSJが工事中）方角へ歩きました。途中のお地蔵さんのスポット。一年を通して鉢植えの花や造花が置いてあるので、地蔵本体は後ろのほうに隠れています。私にとってここは便利な目印で、自転車であるお店に行くときここまで真っ直ぐに来て、右折すると道に迷わずそのお店にたどり着けます。

Taiga wanted to walk in the opposite direction to the usual Johoku Park.  We stopped momentarily to pay respect to the Jizo (religious stone statute commonly seen in Japan) - the tiny figure with a red cap behind the flowers.  There are flower offerings all year around.

昔懐かしい小菊。花のキツイ臭いも好きです。

My favourite, old-fashioned chrysanthemum with a strong scent.

旧としま園まであと数百メートルというところにある橋を渡って帰ります。

I think we have walked far enough - we stopped at a bridge to enjoy the air and blue sky.

川の左岸は桜並木、右岸はイチョウ並木なので、春と秋に楽しめます

On the left of the river are cherry trees, and on the right are ginkgo trees.  So, we can enjoy the view in spring and autumn.

橋の上でくつろいでいたら、黒柴が通りがかりにギャン吠えして行きました。

As we were having a nice rest, a black Shiba Inu passed by, barking at Taiga unprovoked.

気を取り直して、清々しい散歩道を満喫。

We enjoyed the crisp walk in peace on our way back home.

だいぶ寒くなってきたので、パッションフルーツの鉢を取り込みました。ツルは根元から40cmくらいの高さで切って処分。何と、たくさんの実が生っていました。9月の開花だったので、ツルの負担を抑えるために人工授粉したのは10個だけ。後の花は完全に無視していたのに、勝手に受粉していたようです。夏に毎日青い未熟果が害獣に落とされて、それを追熟させたらとても美味しかったので、今日のも追熟させてみます。

以下は全く私の個人的な印象：夏の開花では高気温のおかげで花が１時間ほどで開いてしまい、オシベとメシベが熟すまでには形状が変形して離れてしまいます。秋の開花では一日がかりで花が開くので、花びらが半開きの間にシベが熟して花の中で授粉するようです。初夏には人口授粉しておかないと翌日には花が床に落ちているのに、秋には花が落ちているのを見た覚えがありません。

I took in the passion fruit plant for the coming winter, by cutting it down to about 40cm above the roots.  Unexpectedly, there were a lot of fruits large enough to be ripened off the tree.  After the summer harvest, the plant had new flowers in September and I pollinated only 10 of them, since there was not enough time left for the fruits to grow.  However, seeing all these fruits, I can only conclude that the Edulils variety can self-pollinate under a certain circumstance.

When it flowers in the summer, it opens completely in a matter of one hour under the strong sun and, by the time the pistil and stamen become mature enough, their shapes have undergone a transformation and they are placed too far from each other.  In the case of autumn flowers, it takes almost a day to open and the pistil and stamen become mature enough inside the half-open flower, which is conducive to self-pollination.

今日のパッションフルーツ Passion fruits

今日は随分と寒くて、練馬区の予想最高気温は19℃となっています。この調子だと今月いっぱいでパッションフルーツのツルを刈り込んで、室内へ取り込むことになりそう。

最近気づいたのですが、９月中の開花時期に10個ほど授粉したあとは花が咲いても全く無視していたのに、10月に入って咲いた花が自家受粉したようです。バルコニーの軒下で、仮に人口授粉してやりたくても到底届かない位置に咲いた花です。なので、摘果もできない状態。

The weather is really getting cooler - today's expected maximum temperature is 19℃.  By the end of this month, I will be cutting the vines down to about 40cm so that I can take the plants indoors for the coming  winter.  

I have never known this Edulis variety to self-pollinate.  However, some of the flowers that opened in October now have fruits growing.  Due to the height, I cannot reach these young fruits even though they are just wasting energy of the vine.

こちらは９月開花からの実。害獣が再び訪れることもなく順調に育っています。ツルは夏のあいだ日よけ雨よけとしての効果バツグンでしたが、この時期はガラス戸を通して日光を取り入れたい。

These are fruits that set from September blooming.  The creature that came nightly during the summer to drop the fruits have not returned, so the fruits are growing very nicely.  The plants have served as a shield against rain and direct sun light during the summer but, now, I would love to take in sun's warmth into my bedroom.

これは寝室のガラス戸すぐそばの実。毎朝カーテンを開けると直面する光景です。

This is the sight I see every morning when I open the curtains.

サイズはお店のに劣りません。こんなに簡単に栽培できて、しかも最高に美味しいとなると、エドゥリスがダントツで普及していることに納得。

The fruit's size is as large as those in the shops.  It is no wonder that this variety is most dominant in Japan, given the ease in growing and the incredible taste of the fruits.

パッションフルーツ Passion fruits

 ９月に開花したパッションフルーツの花から実が元気に育っています。ツルの内側、外側を合わせて10個くらい人口授粉しました。11月に取り込むまでにどれくらい熟すのか不安です。

The passion fruit flowers that bloomed in September have produced beautiful young fruits.  In all, I pollinated about 10 flowers.  I will be cutting the vine back to about 1 metre in November in order to keep the plant indoors during winter.  I shall see how close to ripening these fruits will grow by then.

今はこのくらいのサイズ。

The fruits are about L-sized chicken eggs now.

少なくともツルは夏の間、雨除け・日陰用として十分機能してくれました。

The vines provided me during the summer with perfect shade from rains and sunshine.

タイガのトイレ散歩は、一日５回を継続しています。今のところ完璧。なので、タイガの場合、括約筋が働かなくなって常時起きる「漏れ」というより、頻尿の部類だと思います。もうすぐ混合ワクチンで病院へ行くので、その際、先生に相談してみます。

朝・晩の1時間以上の散歩の他は、近所の空き地が便利な近場。タイガが赤ちゃんのとき、初めての外出でここまでダッコしてきて地面に降ろしたら、怖くて固まってしまいました。大好物のオヤツで釣ろうとしても置物のようになっていた思い出の場所です。

So far, having 5 walks everyday seems to be working well for Taiga.  From this, it seems that it is not the case of pure incontinence but a case of frequent need to urinate.  Apart from the long walks in early morning and evening, we come to this empty plot nearby which is used as a carpark.

自宅ちかくまで来たら、ご近所のトイプードル君が通りかかりました。もう15歳だそうですが、小型犬なので老化の度合いはそれほど目立ちません。タイガと会うと、いつもチロチロとシッポを振って寄ってきます。この子も毎日何度も外で見かけます。

When we came back, we met the male Toy Poodle of a neighbour.  He is 15 years old and also goes out for walks quite frequently.  However, being a smaller breed, he does not look as aged as Taiga.
