ベークウェルタルト Bakewell Tart

 ローガンベリーのワイマテが収穫時期に入っているので、タルトに活用しました。タルトの底にワイマテで作ったジャムを敷いて、飾りには新鮮なベリーを使ってあります。

Loganberry, "Waimate", is in season right now, so I made a bakewell tart.  The berries are used in the jam and for garnish.

パッションフルーツ（続） Passion fruits

パッションフルーツの幼果が次々と肥大しています。第２花の実のサイズは第１花の実に追いついて６センチ超えになりました。ここへ来てこの２個の実の肥大がストップしたので、今後は果皮が黒く色づいて熟すでしょう。

The young fruits of the passion fruit plant are growing rapidly.  The fruit in the photo below is from the second flower, and has caught up with the fruit of the first flower.  Since they have stopped growing at this size, I think they are waiting to turn black on the outside before ripening.

昨日と一昨日は雨で授粉作業をさぼりました。既に実が着き過ぎるほどあるので、わざわざ雨の中で授粉することもないからです。キウイ棚はキットで買って組み立てたものですが、大活躍です。

It rained heavily for the last 2 days and I had a welcome break from the task of pollinating the flowers.  I already have more than enough fruits and there are tens more flower buds growing.

 昨日、スーパーからの帰りに覗いてみた武蔵野病院近くの園芸店で見つけたバタフライピーの苗。うちの種から育てている苗は気候のせいか、まだ数センチにしかなっていません。じれったいのと、苗がリーズナブルな値段だったのとで、試しに１個買ってみました。

I bought a butterfly pea plant at a nursery on my way home from shopping yesterday.  I have little butterfly plants growing from seeds, but they are no taller than 5cm even now.  So, I wanted to secure a plant that was sure to flower reasonably soon.

しかも、八重咲のほうです。昨日の夕方に鉢植えにして、今朝みたら元気にバルコニーのラティスに絡まっていました。

To my delight, this is a double-petal variety.

今朝は、練馬の渋谷園芸本店までチャリをこいで行ってきました。入荷したら知らせてもらうことになっていたモリンガ苗が目的でしたが、ついでにもう一品種、コブミカン苗も見かけたので一緒に持ち帰り。方角的に練馬駅よりもうちから遠い店なので、年に一度行くか行かないかです。

This morning, I had a call from another nursery telling me that moringa plants had arrived - I made the request last month.  I also got a kaffir lime plant which was on the shelf nearby.

帰宅してさっそくコブミカンの葉っぱを一枚むしって匂いを嗅いでみたら、柑橘類の葉というよりは薬のような臭いでびっくり。木が育ったら、自分流のスープに入れてみます。

モリンガのほうは、茎が茶色のと緑色のとがあって、いずれは木質化するとは分かっていてもどちらにするか決められなかったので、１本ずつ買ってしまいました。両方ともうまく育てば料理に沢山使えます。

There were moringas with brown stems, and others with green stems.  I know that they will all grow woody eventually, but I could not make up my mind which one to choose.  So, I got one of each, just in cake one type was stronger than the other.  Moringas are said to contain many kinds of nutrition and I shall be using the leaves in my cooking and they will not be wasted.

オニユリの蕾が分かるようになってきました。夏の花なので、まだまだ小さな蕾です。左は、オニユリ独特のポツポツのない、無点かつ黄花のオニユリ（マニアックな世界）。右は、冬の間にスーパーで買った食用ユリを数個の塊に分解して植えつけたものですが、一か所からのみ芽が出ました。

Flower buds of tiger lilies are coming out.  They are both in their first year.  The one on the left should have yellow flowers with no spots, while the one on the right is the normal tiger lily with red flowers and dark spots.  I bought the one on the right in the supermarket as food for cooking.

黄花のほうには、オニユリの典型的なムカゴがじゃらじゃら出ています。増えてくれなくても良いから球根が太って、来年以降沢山の花をつけて欲しいです。

The one on the left already has a lot of bulbils, which is typical of tiger lillies.

これがその素芯黄花オニユリの蕾。今から楽しみです。

These buds will grow into yellow flowers without spots.

こちらはスーパーのほう。普通のオニユリなのか、コオニユリなのか、まだ分かりません。(追：両者の違いについてググってみたら、コオニユリのほうはムカゴを着けないそうです。ということは、これはコオニユリのようです。また、オニユリよりもコオニユリのほうが美味しいので、スーパーで普通に売られているのはコオニユリのほうだそうです。)

日本酒ケーキ Japanese Sake Cake

 日本酒入りのケーキを焼きました。もともと下戸でおまけに日本酒とは縁がないのですが、一度は作ってみたかったケーキです。辛口のアルコール度数14%ですが、生地に入れて焼いた分はアルコールが飛んでいるし、焼きあがったケーキにハケ塗りした分は、一晩なじませておいたら不思議と存在感が無くなりました。でも、それは私の鼻がすっかりマヒしてしまっていたからのようで、ご近所にあげたら「あー、いい匂い！」と、ラップの上からでも分かったようです。ちなみに、ケーキの底にある黒っぽいポツポツは、和風を強調するために甘納豆を入れました（前の晩から酒漬けにして使用）。

I made a sponge cake with sake for flavouring.  For this purpose, a dry type of sake is said to be the best.  

パッションフルーツ棚の延長 Extension to passion fruit scaffolding

 パッションフルーツの生育が良すぎてキウイ棚だけでは足りない状況です。そこで、園芸用の2.1mの支柱を使って物干し竿に橋掛けしました。これで面積が激増です。その影響で真下に置いてある大雪棗が半日陰になる予定ですが、大実系のナツメは鉢植えではどうも実が着きにくいので大したロスにはならないでしょう。

The existing structure for the passion fruit plant is fast becoming too small.  So, I made a bridge between the passion fruit scaffolding and the gate-looking structure beyond (it is a part of the structure for hanging out laundry).  As a result, the passion fruit scaffolding has expanded significantly.

この写真の右の実は今年の第一花からのもの。すでにL卵よりも大きいです。もう少ししたら実の形状が三角っぽく突っ張って、その後に果皮が黒く色づくでしょう。

The fruit on the right is from the first flower of this year.  It is already much larger than an L-sized chicken egg.

蕾の出方は節の間が詰まっていて、その分豊作になりそう。

The distance between flowers is very short, which means that a vine is packed with flowers.

毎日の授粉作業が大変です。最近までの猛暑のような日光のなかでの作業は、手の甲がヤケドしそうなほどでした。かといって、試しに一輪の花を授粉しないでその後の様子を見たら翌日には干からびたので、人口授粉は必須です。

We had a spell of very hot weather recently and it was hard work to pollinate - the back of my hands felt burning under the intense sun.

ローガンベリーのワイマテが少しずつ色づいています。カメムシはまだ稀にしか見かけないので被害は受けなさそう。

'Waimate' loganberries are starting to ripen.

家の北側で、決して日光に恵まれていませんが良く育ちます。ツルは数メートルに伸びて、一株からとは思えないくらい繁茂しています。

It is hard to believe that all this is from just one cluster/stock - the canes simply kept growing.  Even though this is on the northside of my house, the plant does not seem to suffer from the lack of direct sun.

さっそく試食。激スッパでした。去年の実がまだ冷凍庫にあるので早く消費しなければ。

They look tempting, but the taste is quite tart.  This variety is suitable for cooking.

フェイジョアが満開。この写真だけを見ると、まるでのどかな農園で暮らしているかのような景色ですが、夕方の逆光線の関係で背景がボケただけです。

Feijoa plants are in full bloom.  They are such attractive flowers with a hint of tropics.

 園芸用の支柱を買いに近所のJAへ行ったら、デザートライムの接ぎ木苗が売られていました。立派な苗ですが、買う人いるのでしょうか。

I went to the gardening shop nearby to get some materials this afternoon, when I saw 'desert lime' grafted plants.  Quite healthy-looking, decent plants, but I wonder if there are people interested enough to buy.

値段は結構リーズナブルです。

The price is quite reasonable at 1,800 yen, considering the size of the plants.

フェイジョアがもう咲き始める季節のようです。うちに残っている品種は、アポロ、ニキタ、ウィキトウです。実の形状を見ずに果肉だけをブライドテイスティングしたら、私には違いが分からないほど似ていますが、せめて３品種を保持しているほうが実着きが良いです。

The feijoa (a.k.a. pineapple guava) plants in my garden are starting to flower.  I have 3 varieties: Apollo, Nikita and Wiki Tu.

ローガンベリーのワイマテが去年に増して豊作になりそうです。去年の実が一部まだ冷凍庫に残っているので、そのうち消費しなければ。

The loganberry plant, a variety called Waimate, is doing well.  This variety is so prolific that I still have some of last year's crop in my freezer.

耐寒性・耐暑性はブラックベリー並みに強いので便利な品種です。

Also, this variety is super resistant against both cold and hot weather, like blackberries.  

タイガの換毛期が始まりました。昨日のシャンプーのあと、ちょっと歩いただけで毛が柱のような塊りで浮き上がってきます。

Taiga has started to moult.  I shampooed her yesterday and, since then, lumps of loose hair rise to the surface as she walks and moves about.

玄関の外で延々とブラッシングすると蚊に襲われるので、中へ移動。ファーミネーターは優秀です。これ１本で、背中の長い毛から脚の数ミリの毛までゴッソリ取れます。

We moved inside the porch for brushing, since mosquitos are about outside.  The moulting period has only started and I shall be busy brushing her for the next 2 months.

これから２か月ちかく、抜け毛で廊下がザラザラします。スリッパの足で歩くと、シュルシュル音がするほどです（毎日掃除しても）。

パッションフルーツの続 More passion fruit flowers

 昨夜から今日の午後にかけた雨が降りました。特に今朝は滝雨のような降り方でびっくり。そんな中でもパッションフルーツの花は咲くので、今日のうちに授粉できるか心配でしたが、午後に雨が止んだので花粉が有効なうちに授粉作業をしました。

今日の開花は３個ですが、昨日は7個が開花しました。頭上の花に授粉作業するのは意外と首が痛くなります。

It rained through last night and this morning.  In particular, the rain this morning was like watching a water fall from behind.  Nevertheless, the passion flower plant kept flowering in the rain and I had to wait for the afternoon to pollinate, when it stopped raining.  Today, I had only 3 flowers to pollinate, while I was busy yesterday with 7 flowers to look after.

今日の３個目はオシベもメシベもまだ未熟なタイミングだったので、この写真の３時間後に再トライしました。

This one was not mature enough when I took this picture and I had to come back 3 hours later.

This young fruit is from the first flower of a few days ago.  Thanks to the warm weather, the progress is very obvious.

去年の秋に買ったテッポウユリ系の花。蕾がもう１個ありますがこれでも十分綺麗です。

操作ミス Postings lost

ラベル（カテゴリー）の変更をしようとしたら、数件の最近の投稿を失ってしまいました。グーグルブログは通知なしに操作方法を変更します。 昔はラベル変更を一括で行えたのが今はできなくなっているけど、裏ワザを教えているサイト（2019年現在）があったので、それを参考に操作したら記事を喪失しました。幸いYouTube動画に関しては同チャンネルから引っ張ってこれるので、無くした分を再掲。その他の記事は永遠に消失しています。

I lost several of my recent postings as I was trying to re-assign labels (categories).  The Blogger system changes ways of things from time to time, without any notification, and, in short, I mishandled changes.  At least, I could re-post the last two videos from YouTube, but other postings are lost for good.

散歩で良く通る道で、中学の校庭の植え込みの下に紅二点、君子蘭が咲いていました。君子蘭は蘭ではなくヒガンバナ科だそうですが、種が飛んで増えるものではなく誰かが故意に植えたものでしょう。

Under the azalea hedge of a school ground, we saw Kaffir lily flowers.  Someone must have planted them.

北側で直射日光があまり当たらないせいか、色が濃く花が長持ち。

This hedgerow faces north, and the half-shade environment must suit these flowers.

こちらは公園の西洋トチノキ。もう花びらが散り始めています。

Having eaten her treat, Taiga has no intention of co-operating with photos.

ちょうど近くをルイ君が通り過ぎたので、挨拶に降りて行きました。

Just at this moment, Louis, a male Belgian Tervuren, was passing by, and Taiga rushed down the slope to greet him.

 ルイ君は今年の４月で８歳になったそうで、９歳になったばかりのタイガより１歳下です。が、タイガにとってルイ君は３人いるボーイフレンドのひとり。まるで自分が年下のような挨拶です。

Louis is one of Taiga's 3 boy friends.  He has just become 8 years old, while Taiga became 9 years old on 6th of May.  Still, she behaves as if she were younger than Louis, trying desperately to appeal to him - rather embarrassing for me.

タイガの耳は終始ぺったんこのまま。

Taiga's ears remained flat all the time.
