夕方散歩 Evening Walk

 夕方５時半をまわってから散歩に出ました。だいぶ日が短くなってきたのを感じます。

We left the house after 5:30 p.m. for our evening walk.  I can really feel that days are getting shorter.

今朝の散歩ではまだ雨が降っていて、タイガには雨合羽を着せて歩きました。その後雨は止んだものの、夕方になっても空はすっきりしません。

It was raining this morning when we went out, and Taiga had to wear her rain coat.  It stopped raining soon, but the sky remained overcast looking unstable.

近所の小さな公園の石の上で、いつもは散歩帰りのオヤツタイムです。タイガが楽しみにしている場所ですが、今日は出てきたばかりなので、タイガの引っ張りは無視して歩き続けます。

We passed by the small park in the neighbourhood.  Normally, we come here at the end of our walk.  I sit on the rock and Taiga gets her treat.  So, this place is something Taiga looks forward to.  However, today, we had just started walking, so I ignored her pleas and pressed on.

隣の６丁目を歩いていて目に入った、広い敷地のお屋敷のケヤキの木。相当の樹齢のようで巨木ですが、真っ直ぐに立っています。道からも見えるように標識のようなものが掛けられています。

When we were walking in the neighbouring district, we came across an ancient Zelkova tree at a large house with a large garden.  It really was ancient but standing upright.  I could see a plate on the tree trunk, which looked official.

「保護樹木」として、練馬区から指定されているようです。もっと保護樹木を広く認めて欲しいですが、東京の住宅街のように再開発の需要が常に存在するところでは、所有者にとっては不都合なことかもしれません。

The plate shows that the tree has the preservation order from the Nerima Ward.  I wish there were more trees like this.  However, in a residential area of Tokyo, where there is constant need to redevelop, for the owner, getting such an official restriction could be a nuisance, not an honour.

坂を降りて地形的にはかつての谷底にある四さ路に来ました。今年の春にここを通ったときには、このスポットで白いレースフラワーが満開になっていましたが、今はルドベキアの仲間のような花が咲いていました。白花レースフラワーは一年草、ルドベキアは宿根草なので、レースフラワーが終わるのを待って伸び始めたのでしょう。 

We walked down the hill to the bottom of the former valley until we came to a crossroad.  When we passed here in spring this year, this box was full of white lace flowers in bloom.  Now, rudbeckia-like plants were in bloom.  The white lace flower is an annual plant, while the rudbeckia is perennial.  So, the rudbeckia must have waited until the lace flowers were all gone.

I wanted go through this narrow alley to see the current state of a citrus tree that produces globe-like fruits.

タイガの抵抗にあいました。タイガが年をとってからは散歩でタイガがリーダーになるので、こうやって頑固になることがよくあります。それなら私は四さ路に戻って、

But Taiga had another idea.  I allow Taiga to be the leader in walking in her old age, and she sometimes becomes stubborn like this.  Well, if she did not want to see the globe citrus tree, I wanted to go back to the crossroad

左の坂道を登って行きたかったのですが、

and turn left to go up the other side of the valley.

タイガは真っ直ぐ向こうの道を選びました。途中の畑の向こうの丘にあるケヤキの巨木。これも是非 保護樹木にして欲しい。

However, Taiga wanted turn around 180 degrees and stay in the bottom of the valley.  Near the crossroad, there is a farm land, and on top of the hill beyond, is the old Zelkova tree towering over the farm.  I wish that tree were also officially protected.

手前の畑ではイチジクの実が生っていました。横を通ると葉っぱの臭いがしてきます。あの臭いは季節の風物詩と思っているので、決して嫌いな匂いではありません。

In the farm field, there were fig trees with fruits ripening.  When we passed by, I could smell the leaves.  I regard that distinct smell as one of the things representing summer, and I do not mind it.

３丁目に戻って家を目指していたら、初めての子に会えました。チョコたん、生後６か月の女の子。マルチーズが入っている子だそうで、コートはフワフワの直毛、体形はトイプードルっぽいです。

When we came back to our 3-chome district, we met a new face - a 6 months old Toy Poodle and Maltese mix girl, named Choco-tan.  She has the coat of a Maltese, but her stature is more like a Toy Poodle.

微風を受けて柔らかい毛がなびくたびに、顔の表情がトイプーに見えたり、次の瞬間にはマルチーズの目になったりで、まるで遺伝子の手品を見ているようです。

Her coat was blowing in the breeze like silk.  At one point, her expression was that of a Toy Poodle, but in the next instant, her eyes looked like those of a Maltese.  It was like watching a DNA magic play.

天真爛漫な性格でとても懐こいです。

She is a carefree, happy child, and extremely friendly.

タイガにも挨拶しようとしますが、タイガは偏屈ばあさんのようにそっけない態度です。自分だって子犬の頃は、相手の年齢おかまいなしに寄っていったのに、今ではおこちゃまには興味なしという反応を示すようになりました。

She tried to say hello to Taiga, but Taiga behaved like a cranky old woman.  She is like that these days, when faced with an overzealous puppy, forgetting that she was exactly like this girl when she hereself was a puppy.

バラ苗おこし等 Re-shaping Hansa bushes etc

 バラのハンザがジャバラの間から道路側に伸びていたので、庭の内側へ引っ張り込もうと最近思い始めました。試しに2本地植えになっているうちの左側の苗を引き込みました。ハンザは狂暴なトゲにびっしり覆われているので、ステンレス製のトングとベルトを使って引っ張りました。結果は、ずいぶんスッキリした感じです。

It has been on my mind recently to pull the Hansa bushes towards the inside of the garden, instead of allowing them to hang through the accordion fence.  I first tried it with the bush on the left and liked the result - it looked neat.  With Hansa, the whole tree is covered with vicious thorns, and I had to use a metal tongue and a belt to pull the branches in.

左側の苗はスカスカの育成不良だったので、引き込みは簡単でした。

The growth habit of the bush on the left was not vigorous, so it was easy to do the job as a starter.

残る右側の苗には４個のローズヒップが生っています。かなり色づいたので、１個味見してみることに。

The bush on the right has 4 rose hips growing.  One of them looks red and inviting, so I thought I would try the taste.

食べ物を齧ったあとを人に見せるのは大変失礼なことは承知で、果肉はこのように分厚いです。味はというと、昔あるブログ記事で読んだように、本当にリンゴのような風味でした。ただし、店で売られるリンゴの品質ではありません。でも、たくさん生ったら甘酸っぱいローズヒップティーにしたいです。今は閉店で無くなったスーパーで以前、チリ産の乾燥ローズヒップが売られていて、お茶にするととても美味しかったです。

It is considered very rude and uncouth to show the bite mark in Japan.  However, I wanted to show the thickness of the flesh, so I excuse myself.  As to the taste, just as it was described in a blog article I saw many years ago, it tasted like an apple - but not a high end apple in the shop.  If I can grow a lot of these fruits in the future, I would love to dry them and make rose hip tea.  A shop in the neighbourhood used to sell dried rose hips imported from Chile, which made beautiful tea.

右側の苗は枝がよく分岐していたので、ジャバラの後ろへ引っ張り込む際、２本の大枝を失いました。作業が終わったときは一安心。

The bush on the right had many branches and, as I was pulling them in, I lost two large branches.  I was so relieved when the job was finally done.

これまでジャバラの上は、最初はキウイ、次にブラックベリーのナバホを絡ませていたので、ハンザにとって陽当たりも風通しもあまり良くなかったです。先日２本のハンザの間に植えたローガンベリーのワイマテが根付かない場合、スペアを植えるのではなく、門の横に鉢植えになっている３本目のハンザを真ん中に植えるかもしれません。

In the past, I used to grow Kiwi, followed by Navaho blackberry, taking up the space above the Hansa roses.  As a result, the growing environment for Hansa was not very airy or sunny.  If the Loganberry that I planted recently between the two roses does not survive, then I might plant the 3rd Hansa that is currently growing in a pot next to the gate.

７月12日に、冬からの挿し木が成功したナツメを鉢上げしました。これ↓はそのときのようす。

The jujube cutting from last winter had enough roots, which I planted in a pot on July 12th.  This was how it looked then.

ひと月の間に、ここまで育ちました。

It has grown to this in a month.

鉢上げした当時は伸び出したばかりの恒常的な枝がすっかり木質化して、将来の主幹になりそうです。

When it was potted, a permanent branch had just grown out of the cutting.  It has turned wooden since, and it looks like a future trunk.

上の写真では大した成長でないように見えるかもしれませんが、根っこは活発に育っていて、既に地面とつながっていました。鉢を持ち上げようとしたら、ブチブチ音を立てて根っこがちぎれていました。

The plant in the photo above may not look like having grown a lot, but its roots have been very active.  Already, the roots were growing into the ground and, when I tried to lift the pot. they made tearing sounds.

リンゴに限界 Apples struggling

 ここ2日間よく雨が降りました。今日の夕方散歩の時間になって、やっと雨が止んだのでリンゴの様子をチェック。７月に入って以降、葉っぱがかなり落ちてしまいました。

It rained a lot over the last 2 days.  The rain ceased by evening, and I wanted to check how the apple trees were doing.  They lost a lot of leaves since the end of June.

葉の数が少ないこと自体 光合成の観点から深刻なのに、残った葉っぱがハダニの害で銀色です。

Having fewer leaves itself is serious enough in terms of photosynthesis, but the surviving leaves have gone silver caused by spider mites.

今年の夏の間に、ニーム系の自然素材のスプレーを１回、ネットでみた手作りの重曹系のを２回スプレーしましたが、あまり効果を感じていません。

夏は高温多湿の東京の住宅街で、リンゴ栽培は難しいと感じています。温暖化で東京のクライメートゾーンは現在9bにまで上昇しているようです。9のレベルなんて、かつて大実グアバに熱を上げていた昔、憧れていた水準です。

During the current summer, I have sprayed the leaves 3 times - once with neem-based natural spray, and twice with baking soda mixture.  Each time, spider mites came back soon afterwards.  

I feel it is a losing battle.  To grow apples in a residential area in Tokyo, where summers are hot and humid is very difficult.  Due to the global warming, Tokyo's climate zone classification has gone up to 9b currently.  The level 9 was something I used to dream of when I was keen on growing guavas many years ago.

As to the young fruits, since putting the bags on, I have not lost any of them.

もう１本の苗は果肉が赤くなる「紅の夢」。うち２,３個の実の軸近くの部分の色が薄くなっていることが、袋を通してでも分かる状態でした。去年の今頃は、１個だけ生った実が日焼けして、そこから黒く腐り始めました。

This is the red-flesh apple called Kurenai-no-yume.  A few of them seem to have gone lighter in colour near the stem and I could see it even with the bag on.  This time last year, there was just one fruit on this tree, and it got sunburnt without a bag.  The sunburn began spreading and almost a quarter of the fruit turned black and mushy.

日焼けかどうか、袋をそうっと外して確認してみると、腐ってはいないようで石のように硬かったです。9月に入って少し涼しくなり次第、袋を外そうと思います。

I removed the bag carefully to see if it was indeed a sunburn.  No dark spot, and the light-coloured area was hard as a rock.  I will keep the bags on until the weather turns a little cooler in September.

雨の日 Rainy Day

 今日は一日中雨。ワンコの散歩は雨雲の様子を見ながら、なるべく空が明るくなった頃合いをみて外に飛び出していました。

It rained all day today, and it was a nice break from the days of heat wave.  For Taiga's walks, I watched the rain clouds, and we rushed out when the rain became lighter.

この雨合羽、相変わらず役立っています。ワンコがぬれない上に着用を全然嫌がらないので、文句なしです。タイガの体形に合うよう調整するために百均で買ったマジックテープが、今でも効果を発揮しています。

This raincoat that I got on the internet continues to be extremely useful.  It not only keeps Taiga dry, but she does not mind wearing it.  The magic tapes (Velcro) that I bought from the 100-yen shop are functioning perfectly, as if the raincoat was made to measure for Taiga.

雨のおかげでナツメの水やりはお休みできました。ナツメは非常に水を欲しがる植物なので、猛暑の期間は一日３回水やりしています。願わくば、いつまでも樹高が伸びない蟠棗が、雨水を吸って大きくなってほしいです。樹高はまだ60 cmくらい。

Thanks to the rain, I did not have to water the jujube plants today.  Jujube trees require a lot of watering, and I water them 3 times a day during the summer months.  Hopefully, with this rain, the Panzao jujube tree will get taller - it is still about 60 cm tall.

背はのびなくても葉っぱがとても充実して、苗は栄養満点の状態です。

Although remaining short, the tree has matured in terms of branches and leaves, looking full of nutrients.

一年限りの小枝が続々と出てきますが、どれも蕾なしです。

It keeps shooting out non-permanent branches, but they are without flower buds.

それでも、２,３週間前に２個だけ蕾のある小枝が出て、そのうちの１個の花が結実しました。現在、実の直径は1 cm+ 程度ですが、

Except, I noticed a small limb with 2 flower buds a few weeks ago.  One of the flowers ended in fruit setting.  The young fruit is currently only 1 cm+ in diameter, but

柄がしっかり太いので、このまま肥大しそうな気がします。

the stem looks strong, so this fruit may continue to grow.

カラーマーカーとの比較では、これくらいの大きさ。既に蟠棗の特徴である窪みができています。最終的には、蟠桃ほどまではいかなくても、かなり扁平な形になるはずです。

Size comparison with a colour marker.  Even as early as this, there is a dent in the middle of the fruit, which is the hallmark of Panzao.  The fruit may not become as flat as the doughnut peach, but distinctively flat for a jujube fruit.

数日前から新たな蕾が育ってきましたが、今朝 １個が咲いていました。今 着いている実も、元はこのように２個だけの蕾が出ていたもので、他の品種のような蕾のクラスターは出たことがありません。

A few days ago, I noticed two flower buds on the limb close to the young fruit.  One of them started to open this morning.  It began just like this for the fruit on the right - only two flower buds, not clusters like the other cultivars on the balcony.

Not to waste the opportunity, 

近くで開花中の無核金絲棗の花粉をダメ元でつけてみました。

I cross-pollinated it with the flowers of the Seedless Gold Thread jujube that started to bloom a few days ago.

時々おかきや煎餅が食べたくなります。今日は雨で買い物には行きたくないので、冷蔵庫にあった切り餅を薄くスライスして、おかきを揚げてみました。初めての試みです。写真左のような切り餅２枚使っただけですが、こんなに膨らみました。右のは塩入りの「青さのり」で味付け。左のは失敗しました。醤油をハケでささっと塗っただけでも表面が湿ったので、110℃のオーブンで30分乾燥させました。お店で売っているのは、工場の大型機械で十分乾燥させてカリカリにしているのでしょうか。

I had a craving today for rice snacks but did not want to go out into the rain to buy a packet.  So, I made thin slices of mochi squares that I had in the fridge and deep-fried them.  I had never tried it before.  I used only two pieces of mochi squares like the one shown on the left, but the slices bloated in the hot oil.  The pieces on the right are flavoured with green seaweed and salt.  Those on the left are soy sauce flavoured, which became soggy, and I had to dry them in the oven for 30 minutes at 110℃.  They were very delectable.

夕方散歩 Evening Walk

 練馬区の今日の最高気温は33℃だったそうです。近年の猛暑の夏に体が慣れたせいか、私は33℃までなら、隣家の日陰になる1階で扇風機だけでも楽に過ごせるようになりました。ときどき２階のバルコニーへ出て、先日開花が始まった無核金絲棗の苗を眺めたりしたほどです。おびただしい数の花が咲いているので、初年度ながら数個の収穫が期待できそうです。

夕方散歩の時間もまだ暑かったけど、２,３日前までの暑さに比べれば、季節的に何かが変わったような空気でした。

The maximum temperature today in our Nerima Ward was 33℃.  Due to the extreme summer heat of recent years, I can tolerate up to 33℃, and by staying downstairs which is in the shadow of my next door's house.  I felt comfortable enough during the day to go out on the upstairs balcony to look at the Seedless Gold Thread jujube plant which started flowering a few days ago.  It has abundant flowers, probably enough to produce a few fruits in the initial year of growth.

It was still hot at the time of our evening walk, but I felt something different in the air, compared to the hot and humid weather until a few days ago.

日もだんだんと短くなってきて、今日は早めに出てきたつもりでも、日暮れっぽい風景を感じます。

Also, days are visibly getting shorter.  We left the house earlier than usual but already the scenery was looking like an early evening.

先日、何年ぶりかで会えた幼馴染のゴールデンのクリスちゃんと今日もばったり。クリスちゃんとタイガは生年月日が同じで、昔はよく一緒に遊んだ仲良しなので、私のなかでは特別な思いがあります。

We ran into Chris, a female Golden Retriever, whom we had not seen for years until a few days ago.  Chris and Taiga share the same birthday and year.  As puppies, they played together constantly.  So, I get a special feeling when I see them meeting like this.

クリスちゃんがずっと尻尾を振ってくれて、別れがたかったです。

Chris was wagging her tail all the time, and it was hard to leave.

帰り道の途中にある、いつもの広場を目指します。

We headed for Taiga's favourite field which was on our way to the exit of the park.

私の好きなアオギリの木が写真の中央に位置し、背後の西の空は不安定そうな雰囲気です。

My favourite solitary tree situated in the middle of the photo, with an evening sky looking a little unstable.

良い風が吹いていたので、しばらく休んでから帰りました。

There was a nice breeze, and we rested on the grass for a while before going home.
