午後散歩 Afternoon Walk

 今日は数日ぶりの雨。朝から降ったり止んだりで、タイガと散歩に出たとたんに降り出すので急いで帰る、の繰り返しでした。午後になって空が明るくなったので城北公園まで行きましたが、着いてほどなくまた降り出しました。家までは遠いので、枝が密集した木の根元で雨宿りです。

Today, we had a break from the recent heat wave, with occasional showers throughout the day.  Every time we went out for a walk, it started raining, so we hurried home.  After repeating it several times, the sky became light in the afternoon, and we ventured out to go to the Johoku Park.  Just as we reached the park, it started raining again.  We took cover under dense branches, since home was too far away to rush back.  In the photos below, it may not look like raining, and, yes, it was a light rain, but we (i.e. the Japanese people) cannot stand getting wet even a little.  

黒っぽい雨雲が早い速度で移動しているので、雨雲と雨雲の間を狙って帰ることにしました。雲の切れ目ができるまで待機。

I saw that pieces of dark clouds with rain were moving fast, so I decided to catch the gap between rain clouds.  Until I found such a gap, we waited under the tree.

家の近くまで来ると、顔見知りになったばかりのポメラニアンの子がやって来ました。尻尾以外は柴カットですが、純ポメです。コマ吉君、１歳半。

After leaving the park and close to home, we saw a Pomeranian that we met for the first time recently.  He has a Shiba Inu hair cut but he is a genuine Pomeranian, named Komakichi, aged 1 1/2 years old.

タイガに近づこうと大興奮。

He was extremely excited trying to get close to Taiga.

12歳のタイガは、ぼーぜんとして待ち受けるだけ。

Taiga, at 12 years old, was laid back and waited to see what Komakichi was about to do.

Taiga seemed to find his enthusiasm a little overdone.

そこへタイガにとって幸運にも、近所のジャーマンピンシャーのリアちゃんがやって来ました。

Luckily for Taiga, Leah, my neighbour's female German Pinscher arrived.

コマ吉君はもしかして未去勢かも。最近一度会ったばかりなので、飼い主さんに尋ねてはいませんが。

Looking at how Komakichi behaves, he may be an intact male (I have not asked the question to his mom, since we only met once recently).

リアちゃんも困惑気味。

Leah also seemed to find it too much.

なぜか、今度はふたりしてタイガを標的にしました。

Somehow, they both started sniffing at Taiga.

リンゴも日焼け Sunburnt apple

 最近の猛暑の影響がリンゴ「紅の夢」にも出てきたようです。紅の夢は、去年 大きな実が１個だけ生って、それがもろに日焼けで一部腐敗してしまいました。放置していると今年も同じようになりそうな気配です。今のところ、日焼けはこの１個だけ。

The extreme heat over the recent days may have had an effect on one of the Kurenai-no-Yume apples.  Last year, this tree had one large fruit, but it was sunburnt and totally ruined.  If I do nothing, the same thing may happen this year.  At this moment, only this fruit is showing the sign of sunburn.

他の紅の夢は健康そうですが、リンゴ用の袋を注文するかもしれません。

Others seem healthy, but I am thinking of getting special paper bags for protecting apples.

実の形は、この段階では扁平になりがち。

The shape of Kurenai-no-Yume tends to be flat at this young stage.

これも紅ですが、枝がグラニースミスの枝に入り込んで日陰なので全然色づいていません。

This is also Kurenai-no-Yume, but it is green all over because its twig has got into the branches of Granny Smith, thus being in shade.

手前の木がグラニースミス、向こう側が紅の夢（分かりにくいですが、大体のイメージ）。

The tree on the right is Granny Smith, and the one on the left is Kurenai-no-Yume (not easy to see, so just for a general idea).

グラニースミスは豊産性なので摘果が大変でした。少しの余裕を持たせて現在15個ほど残してありますが、最終的には10個の完熟を目指します。

Granny Smith is a prolific cultivar, and I had to force myself to thin the young fruits.  Currently, there are about 15 of them left, but eventually, I would like to reduce them to around 10 to mature.

ここまでくると、摘果するのが辛い。

When they are growing vigorously, it is very hard to get rid of them.

この緑色の地に白い点々が、いかにもグラニースミスの幼果です。

The white dots against the green backdrop are typical of young Granny Smith fruits.

あまり熱心ではない紅玉は非常に小粒です。グラニースミスに高接ぎしてあり、現在５個ですが写真に写っている３個まで減らすかも。

There is another cultivar grafted onto Granny Smith, but I am not overly excited with this one, called Kogyoku.  It is small, and its shelf life is very short.  Until recently, this cultivar was the only cooking apple grown commercially, but now professional cooks have a wider choice, including Bramley.   

Of the Kogyoku apple, there are 5 left currently but I may reduce them to 3, those shown in the photo below.

散歩など Walks etc

 今日も最高気温が35℃で猛暑日でした。ナバホはさらに日焼けしていましたが、この↓ルビービューティーのラズベリーは影響を受けません。何とも有難い存在です。今日は一番左の房に１個、完熟果がありました。

Another hot day with the maximum temperature reaching 35℃.  I saw more Navaho blackberries getting sunburnt.  No such worries with this↓Ruby Beauty raspberry.  What a blessing to have this variety.  Today, I found one ripe berry on the left cane.

食べてみると、ラズベリーらしい味で大満足です。対して、ジョーン・スクワイアの夏果は上品すぎてラズベリーのワイルドな風味はありません。アイスクリームを作るときにジョーン・スクワイアを使うと、繊細な風味がクリームのしつこさに負けてムダになると思います。ルビービューティーは用途が広いので、沢山収穫できるように世話を頑張ろうと思います。

It tasted truly raspberry like and so pleasing.  In contrast, the summer fruits of Joan Squire taste very gentile and lacks the coarse raspberry flavour.  If you use Joan Squire when making ice cream, the subtle taste will be overshadowed by the greasiness of the cream.  Ruby Beauty has a wider use, and I would love to increase the spread of this plant.

午後散歩で久しぶりに会った黒ラブミックスの女の子、マルちゃん。マルちゃんは子犬のときから、なぜか異常に私に懐いていて、遠くから私の姿を見つけるとこうやって飼い主さんを引っ張ってきます。

During our afternoon walk, we met Maru, a female black Labrador mix.  Since she was a puppy, she has been unusually fond of me.  If she ever spots me from a distance, she will rush towards me by pulling her mom like this.

地面を這いずるようにして私目がけて突き進んできます。

She almost crawls on the ground as she comes closer.

タイガのことは完全スルー。私に撫でてもらおうとするのですが、私の手が体のどこかに触れたとたんに「キャーッ」と人間のような甲高い声で叫びます。まさに、スクリームの甲高さ。嬉しさと興奮の高まりで「キャー」となるのですが、知らない人が見るとまるで私が虐待しているかのような勘違いをすること間違いなし。私が手を離すとまたすり寄って来ては直ぐにキャーです。もう、人間たちは大笑いです。

She ignores Taiga completely.  She wants me to pet her, but the moment my hand touches her body, she lets out a huge scream sounding like a terrified young girl.  Her mom always apologises to me explaining that Maru's screams are a product of over excitement and happiness.  I can see that clearly, too.  However, a stranger passing by would surely think that I am hurting Maru.  So, I draw back, but Maru comes snuggling up to me for more stroking, which ends up with more screams.  Her mom and I always have a good laugh.

今日は夏至の翌日。日が長いうちに夕方散歩をゆったり楽しもうと、散歩の方角を変えて桜台５丁目まで歩いてみました。ここは広大な土地に建つ禅寺。あまりに大きいところなので入口がいくつもありますが、たぶんこの２本の石柱のところが正門です。

Today was the first day after the summer solstice.  While long days last, I want us to enjoy a lot of evening walks.  So, we headed for the district beyond our next district.  We came to a Zen temple with vast land.  This place is so huge that it has several entrances.  However, I think this is the main gate - the passage through the two stone pillars.

右に写り込んでいる巨大な岩が目立っていて、いかにもこの寺の「顔」的な存在です。

The boulder on the right is conspicuous, but it adds the Zen ambience.

その近くには、こんな入口もあります。

Close by, there is another entrance.

さきほどの正門の近づき難い雰囲気とは違って、まるで茶室に続くような優しさ。

Unlike the austere atmosphere of the other entrance, this passage looks friendly as if to invite you to a tea ceremony room.

さらに右へ移動すると、寺への訪問者用の駐車場があって、そこからも入ることができます。

Walking a little more to the right, there is a visitors' carpark from where you can enter the garden.

このアプローチも可愛らしく演出されている。

This passage is also very nicely designed and maintained.

そしてさらに裏手のあたりまで歩くと、ちょっと生活感のある落ち着いた建物があります。

Further down the road, you come to a set of buildings with a quiet 'lived in' atmosphere.

人影がないので周りを気にせずに、観光客のように写真を撮りまくりました。

Since I saw no-one about from the start, I took photos like a tourist.

近くの民家では、巨大なホンコンエンシス「月光」の木が満開になっていました。写真では夕方の光のなかで黄色っぽく見えますが、実際はまるで雪が降ったかのように白い花が木全体を覆って見事でした。

Nearby, there was a private house with a huge Cornus hongkongensis: 'Gekkou '.  In the photo blow with evening light, the flowers appear to be cream-coloured, but the actual ones were white.  The whole tree looked as if it had snowed heavily.

ブラックベリーなど Blackberries etc

 城北公園手前の屋敷林の一角にある石像には、毎朝新鮮な花が供えられています。通りすがりに足を止めて手を合わせる人たちをよく見ます。

In the corner of the privately owned woodland near the Johoku Park, there are two stone statues.  These statues get fresh flowers every morning.  Passersby often stop in front of them to pay respect.

今朝の花はオオキンケイギク、アジサイと、クリーム色の細かい花は名前を知りませんが、公園で開花中の木は知っています。

This morning's flowers were Coreopsis lanceolata, hydrangea, and cream-coloured blossoms from a tree.  I do not know the name of the tree, but I know what it looks like.

これです。もっと枝が地面近くに垂れていた年に、ある人が黒く熟した実の着いた枝を採取していたので、毎年この木の花や実を見るたびに思い出します。その人はケガをしたヒヨドリを保護したそうで、この木の実が餌になると話していました。

This is the same tree but growing in the Johoku Park.  This tree has stuck in my mind ever since an encounter.  When the branches of this tree were hanging close to the ground some years ago, I saw a woman picking twigs with dark ripe berries.  She told me that she had rescued a young Japanese Bulbul and the bird loved eating those berries.  She would look after the bird until it could fly away.

帰宅前の休憩。今朝のオヤツは人間用の無塩の「食べる煮干し」で、タイガの好物。

We had a short rest before going home.  The treat this morning was salt-free dried sardine, which is sold as snacks for humans, but Taiga loves it, too.

今年のブラックベリーのナバホは異常事態です。黒く色づいた実のほぼ全てに、このように白い部分があります。いつもの年なら、収穫期間の後半くらいからカメムシが登場し始めて、こういう症状が一部の実に出ます。でも、こんなに早い時期にカメムシは見かけません。

カメムシでないとしたら、日焼け？白い部分は実の上のほうに出ているので、この可能性は無視できません。そこで、ググってみたら、下掲のサイトに同様の症状についての記述がありました。Sunscaldのパラグラフです。内容からして、もう「日焼け」に決まりです。今年は梅雨の最中に猛暑日があったのでキビシイ。

来年からはどうしようと考えたら、鉢植えで家の北側で育てる。うちの場合、北側なら直射日光が当たるのは午後の遅い時間帯です。また、鉢植えなら目の細かいネットを掛けて、カメムシが侵入しないようにもできます。一度は試す価値あり。そういえば、以前、北側でローガンベリーのワイマテをフェンスに這わせていたときは日焼け知らずでした。また、ワイマテはカメムシが登場する前にほぼ収穫が済んでいたので、こういう問題とは縁がなかった。

ということで、ナバホは現在の場所から全面撤去します。代わって、日陰で細々と生きているワイマテを引っ張って来て、ここに植えようと思います。ワイマテなら、猛暑が始まる前に収穫を終えているだろうし、日焼けするという記事は出てきませんでした。ブラックベリーは色が黒ぶん、果肉の温度上昇に影響があるのかも。

Something is seriously wrong with my Navaho this year.  Almost every single one of nearly ripe berries have white drupelets on top.  Are they stink bug damage, or sunscald?  

In normal years, stink bugs do not start appearing until the latter half of the Navaho harvesting season.  It is too early, and I have not seen a stink bug this year yet.  Then, can it be sunburn?  I searched and found this site which explains possible causes fully.  Having read the paragraph under 'Sunscald', I have concluded that it is the case of sunburn.  Even though in the middle of the rainy season, we have had super-hot days lately with maximum daily temperatures exceeding 35℃.

Then, what shall I do from next year?  I think I will pick some of the Navaho shoots out of the ground and put them in pots, and then place them on the northside of the house which gets direct sunlight in late afternoon when the temperature is cooler.  Also, by growing them in pots, I can cover them with fine nets which will prevent stink bugs getting in.  I used to grow Waimate loganberry on the north side and it grew well with such limited direct sunlight.

So, I am going to uproot the whole plant in the picture as soon as possible.  Instead, I will plant Waimate in this place.  Waimate ripens before the weather gets too hot.  Also, Waimate harvest is almost over by the time stink bugs start appearing.

ナバホを撤去すると、下草のようになっているバラのハンザ２株が元気に育つことが期待できます。ワイマテはツル植物なので、枝の分岐のしかたもナバホとは違っていて、今ある支柱の天辺を這わせて、下のスペースはハンザに開けることが可能になると思います。

By removing Navaho from this place, I am hoping that the two Hanza rose trees will grow better.  Waimate is a vine, and its branches grow in a very different way from those of Navaho, leaving enough space for the roses to grow upwards.

アンズなど Apricots etc

 アンズのサニーコットが色づいてきて、いかにも「完熟」という表情でした。

The remaining apricots have deepened in colour, and they look ready to be picked.

スモモの木に２枝を高接ぎしてあるだけなので4個しか残っていませんが、有難く収穫。タイガの反応は？

These apricots are from two branches that I grafted onto a plum tree a few years ago.  So, I do not get many fruits as yet, but I am grateful to get them at all.  Let's see how Taiga reacts to the fruits.

一番赤いのを早速1個食べてみたら何とも甘かったけど、糖度を計るのを忘れていました。残るのはこの３つ。

I ate the softest one right away, and it was indeed sweet.  However, I forgot to measure the sugar content.

右端の小さいのを割って計ると、19.6度。実際に食べた印象は20度超えでした。前回の、台所で追熟させた１個とは美味さが比較になりません。

So, I cut another one in half, and the sugar content was 19.6%!  The impression I got when actually eating was as sweet as above 20%.  This was really incomparable with the one that ripened off the tree the other day.

最近のギラギラ日差しのせいか、フィンガーライムのミアローズ２個にキズなのか日焼けなのか、汚損が発生していました。去年の夏・秋に咲いた花からの幼果が越冬したものですが、この２個より大きなものも含めて、いつ完熟しているのか判断がつきません。

I found these bruised Mia Rose finger lime fruits, probably due to the strong sun recently.  The fruits I have now are from the flowers of summer/autumn of 2024, and the young fruits spent the winter indoors.  The trouble with finger lime fruits is that it is hard to tell when they are ripe.

汚損果なので迷わず割ってみました。中身の完熟は確実なようですが、果肉の色が残念です。去年 最適なタイミングで収穫したものは本当に綺麗な濃いピンク色だったので、今回のは落胆です。

I cut the two fruits open, since they were damaged on the outside and I had nothing to lose.  The flesh seems ripe, but its colour is disappointing.  Last year, I picked Mia Rose at a right time and the little bubbles looked like jewels with a deep pink colour.  What a difference.

もっと大きな実が沢山残っているので、もう少し経ったら色づきが良くなることを期待しています。こんなに判断が難しいものなら、商業栽培には向かない果樹だと思います。消費者はベストな状態のものを期待するはずなので、若干早すぎる収穫で果肉の色が宣伝文句とは異なると、「もう二度と買わない」となるかも。

趣味で育てている私はというと、だんだん興味が薄れてくる今日この頃です。世話するたびに狂暴なトゲで痛い思いするし、生食に適したものでもないので。とりあえず今日のはサラダにふりかけます。ミニトマトの酸っぱさに紛れて気にならないかも。

I have larger fruits waiting to ripen, and there are a lot of them.  Seeing how difficult it is to judge when to pick them, I do not think these are suitable for commercial growing.  Consumers expect the perfect colour that they saw in the picture and, if they get disappointed due to slightly early picking, they will never want to buy them again.  

As to myself, growing finger lime plants as a hobby is becoming less attractive.  The thorns are numerous and vicious, and every time I take care of the plants, I get stung.  Moreover, the fruits are not suitable for eating alone.  I might sprinkle today's finger lime flesh over my salad and, hopefully, the cherry tomatoes will mask the sourness of the finger limes.
