公園で At the Park

今朝はいつもより遅めに 家を出て城北中央公園手前の草地に着いたら、近所の紀州犬のウメちゃんと会えました。最後に会ったのは真冬だったので数か月ぶりです。ウメちゃんちは我が家とは目と鼻の先の距離ですが、散歩の時間帯が合わないとなかなか会えません。

This morning, we left the house later than usual, and when we arrived at the field just before the Johoku Central Park, we saw Ume, our neighbour's Kishuken.  It was in the middle of the winter when we last met each other, so it has been months.  Although Ume's house is only a stone's throw away, our lifestyles are different, and we rarely run into each other.

ウメちゃんはタイガより1歳若くて11歳ですが、なぜかタイガは耳をぺったんこにして態度が下手になります。

Ume, at 11 years old, is one year junior to Taiga, and yet, Taiga always greets Ume in a submissive way.

臭い嗅ぎも、ウメちゃんがタイガに対してズンズン近づいて来て、タイガはじっと立ったまま。

After the initial contact, Ume aggressively sniffs Taiga, while Taiga stands still.

ウメちゃんは更にタイガの体の臭いチェックまで。その後、ウメちゃんにとってこの暑さは体力的に負担なので帰りました。

Ume goes on to sniff Taiga's back.  After that, Ume went home since the heat was too much for her health condition.

タイガと私は中央公園に入り、古代家のある涼しい林を歩きます。

Taiga and I entered the Johoku Central Park and walked in the cool air of the woods where a reconstructed ancient dwelling was.

その林の向こう、道を渡ってノムラモミジのある草地へ向かいました。

We then crossed the road to enter the field beyond, where there was the red maple tree.

ノムラモミジは未だ春の薄い葉っぱなので、色は夏以降と比べて薄めで透明感があります。

The leaves are still fresh and flimsy, so their colour is lighter than it will be from summer onwards, and sunlight passes through them.

帰る前のオヤツタイム。今日またジャーキーを作って補充する予定なので、いつもより多めに与えました。

It is the treat time before going home.  Since I was going to make a new batch of chicken breast jerky this morning, I was more liberal than usual with the treats.

満足したのか、珍しくカメラ目線でポーズ。

She must have been happy, since she posed for the camera, which rarely happens.

帰宅して、ブラックベリー「ナバホ」の花が咲き進み、幼果が目立ってきました。

Back home, flowers of Navaho blackberries have passed their peak, and now young fruits are looking more prominent.

ブラックベリーの両脇にはバラのハンザを植えてあり、こちらも咲き始めています。

Hansa roses are planted on either side of the blackberry, and they are starting to flower.

門の横の鉢植えのほうは、側を通ると濃厚な香りが漂ってきます。この暑い天気で咲いても花びらがしっかり着いているのは1日くらいなので、栄養が種のために使われないよう、夕方には子房の下で切り取っています。他の２株については今年初めて種を育ててみるつもりなので放置です。ただし花びらは紅茶に利用。

Flowers of the Hansa plant by the gate send off a beautiful scent.  Unfortunately, the weather is too hot and the flowers last little more than a day.  In order to conserve nutrition for younger flower buds, I pick the open flowers just below the ovary, in the evening.  However, with the other two Hansa plants, I simply pluck the petals, hoping to see rose hips in autumn.  Not to waste, I add the petals to black tea leaves, which makes a beautiful pot of tea.

As I was looking at the flowers and getting lost in my thought, Taiga was watching me through the gate.

朝散歩 Morning Walk

モワッとする暑い朝でした。今からこんなにへこたれていては、どうやって夏を乗り切るのか。。。　　公園では初夏の花、西洋トチノキがピークは過ぎたもののまだ綺麗に咲いていました。

A sultry morning.  Getting exhausted already at the start of the summer, I wonder how I am going to pull through the mid-summer.  In the park, a red-blossom horse chestnut tree was still in bloom, although past its peak.

あー、夏だ

It is indeed summer.

イギリスでは牧草地にこういう大木がポツンと植わっていると、ヒツジか牛が株元にうずくまって涼をとっている風景をよく見ました。葉っぱが大きく枝ぶりも密なので、深い木陰を提供します。

Where I lived in England, I used to see large chestnut trees standing in the middle of meadows, with sheep or cattle crouched under the branches as a shelter from the heat.  With the large leaves and dense branches, the horse chestnut provides farm animals with deep shadows.

近くで見ると結構カワイイ花です。

ここはタイガのオヤツスポット。築山で風が来るちょうど良い木陰なので、帰る前にくつろぐのに持ってこいです。

This is the spot for Taiga's treat.  Being on top of the mound where breeze passes through, and under the shadow of the tree, it is an ideal place to rest before going home.

タイガは12歳ともなると、口のまわりが白くなりました。すっかり落ち着いたワンコになって、お互い付かず離れずが合っている暮らし方です。

At 12 years old, the sides of Taiga's mouth have become white.  She has lost her boisterous ways and now we are enjoying our quiet life, keeping a comfortable distance from each other at home.

オヤツのあとは道を渡って向かいの草地へ移動。同じ木陰でも草の上はヒンヤリして更に心地よいです。ここは桜の時期に花見で賑わうところですが、今はすっかり草深くなっています。これくらい草丈のあるほうが空気の冷却効果が高いので、長居したくなるほど。
After the treat, we crossed the road to walk through the field that was on our way home.  There are a lot of cherry trees in this field which attract people during the cherry blossom season.  Now, it is all quiet and the grass is tall.  At this time of the year, I like the long grass since it absorbs the heat.  Under the trees, the air was so cool with breeze that I did not want to leave.

帰ろうと一旦立ち上がったところで、タイガに引き留められました。

When I finally got up, Taiga stood firm and stopped me.

リンゴの現在 Apples update

リンゴの幼果が雨のたびに育っています。だいぶ摘果をしてきましたが、まだまだ足りないので今後も徐々に減らす予定。

The young fruits of the apple trees are growing thanks to the frequent rain.  I have done quite a lot of picking, but there remain too many for these young trees.

紅の夢:  Kurenai-no-Yume

これは紅の夢の頂部。アーチ型に曲げてあったものを、強風対策や摘果作業の都合から、プッツリ切ってみました。

This is the top end of Kurenai-no-Yume.  It used to be much longer and bent forming an arch.  I cut it short a few days ago, since it was swaying too much in a strong wind and, also, it was too tall for the task of picking young fruits.

こちら↓はグラニースミスの頂部に接いである紅玉の枝。紅の夢のように切ってしまうと、授粉用の枝としては短すぎになるので、どうするかの判断は今度の冬まで保留。去年の初開花でグラニースミスが紅の夢より一足先に咲くことが分かったので、何か授粉樹をと思って接いだのですが、今年の経緯では紅玉が最も遅くに開花したので無意味でした。しかも、海外Youtuberによるとグラニースミスは自家受粉する品種だそうなので、紅の夢が遅れて咲いても問題ないはずです。

This is a Kogyoku branch, grafted onto the top of Granny Smith.  If I cut it like I did with Kurenai-no-Yume, I am afraid this section would become too short as a pollinator.  Last year, when Granny Smith and Kurenai-no-Yume flowered for the first time, Kurenai-no-Yume was behind GS by more than a week.  So, I was hoping that Kogyoku  would pollinate GS.  As it turned out this year, Kogyoku was the last one to flower among the 3 varieties.  Moreover, I recently learned on Youtube that GS is a self-pollinator, which means that the time gap did not matter.  Kogyoku has a very short shelf life, but until recently, this was virtually the only cooking apple commercially produced in Japan.  I will decide what to do with Kogyoku by next winter.

午後散歩 Afternoon walk

 昨夜の雨は朝までに止んで、今日は一日中曇りでうっとおしい天気。最近は一日おきくらいに雨が降るので、まるで梅雨が始まるかのようです。近所の花壇ではこの時期の花、シランが咲いていました。

It rained again all night and, although it had stopped by this morning, it was overcast all day today.   It seems to rain almost every other day now, as if the rainy season is about to start.  In the flower bed of my neighbour, the seasonal Bletilla orchids were in full bloom.

ぱっと見、紫と白の品種のように見えますがそれは相対的な影響で、

At first glance, they look like purple and white flowers.

白っぽいのだけ見ると、うっすらピンクの花です。

Taking a closer look, the white flowers are in pale pink - quite pretty flowers.

その近くで、初めて会うトイプードルの子が近づいてきました。モコちゃん、２歳だそうです。最初は積極的だったのに、一旦タイガが近づき始めると急に引っ込み思案の態度。

There came a new face, a 2-years old Toy Poodle, named Moco.  At first, she was quite excited to see Taiga, but the moment Taiga approached her, her courage began to fail.

気を取り直してちゃんとタイガに挨拶。

She recovered herself and greeted Taiga.

今日のタイガは小竹向原駅につづく遊歩道を歩きたいらしく、その方角へ私を誘導します。環七に向かう途中の家の前で、ネコがタイガを凝視していました。ここはよく通る道ですが、このあたりに住み着いているネコらしく、ほぼ毎回見かけます。この家ではご飯と水をもらえるのでしょう。

This afternoon, Taiga wanted to walk the pedestrian path that leads to the Kotake Mukaihara Station.  On our way to the Ring Road No. 7 crossing, a cat was staring at Taiga in front of a house.  We often pass this house when heading for the crossing, and he is almost always seen in this area.  I think he gets food and water at this house.

タイガが通り過ぎるのを見慣れているのか、平静を保っています。

He is used to seeing Taiga and remains calm at the sight of her.

環七を渡って、小竹向原駅を目指します。どんよりした雲が頭上にあり、ときどき雨粒を顔に感じます。

After crossing the Ring Road No. 7, we walked towards the underground station.  There was a rain cloud above us, and I could feel a few drops on my face.

でも、赤葉のモミジの木があると、そこだけパッと明るく感じます。

In spite of the depressing weather, a red maple tree made the spot cheerful.

この植樹帯には数本のユリノキが植わっていて、まだ開花中でした。

In the tree plant zone, they have several tulip trees growing, and the flowers were still there.

今日は枝を揺らす風がないので何とか花を撮れました。

With no wind swaying the branches today, I managed to get some photos.

下鉄有楽町線、小竹向原駅の自転車置き場も新緑の季節です。

The Kotake Mukaihara Station is the turning point of our walk.  The bicycle parking area of the station is always full.

駅横の駐輪場だけでは足りないので、車道の向こう側、さっきまでの遊歩道とは反対側にも自転車用エリアが設けられています。その端には、まるで家具のようにいつも居る２匹のネコたち。

So, they have a spillover parking line along the pedestrian path, which is on the other side of the vehicle road, and this is the path we take to go home.   Close by, these two cats are always seen, like fixtures.

通る人たちの中にはファンがいて、エサをもらって丸々太っています（手術済み）。エサをやった後もそばで立ちすくんでいる様子から、癒しをもらっているようです。

The cats have steady fans who come to feed them every day (they are neutered).  I have seen persons lingering after feeding them - I think they get healing effects from them.

今にも雨がパラパラ来そうなので、環七交差点を目指します。途中の集合住宅の前ではブラシの木が満開でした。
The sky was threatening, so we headed for the Ring Raod.  On our way, I saw this amazing sight - a bottle brush tree in full bloom by the side of a block of flats.

英語の呼び方は「ボトルブラシ」ですが、なるほどそっくりです。

The name 'bottle brush' is so apt.

さらに歩いていると、植樹帯に満開のヤマボウシの大木がありました。
Further down the road, a large Japanese dogwood tree was in full bloom.

ハナミズキよりも一月ほど遅れて咲くのと、葉っぱも花と同時に出ているので、ハナミズキと混同しません。

It is easy to distinguish this tree from the dogwood tree introduced from the US.  The Japanese dogwood tee blooms about one month late.  Also, leaves are fully out when the tree starts flowering.
