朝散歩 Morning Walk

 今朝の散歩中になんとも可愛いメッセージが桜の木に吊り下げられているのに目がいきました。

During our morning walk, I saw these lovely farewell messages tied to the trunk of cherry trees.

石神井川沿いの歩道には何キロにもわたってソメイヨシノが植わっていますが、その多くは老朽化していて哀れな状態です。そこで、おととしあたりから徐々に植え替えが始まっています。今朝の散歩で城北公園とは逆方向の6丁目の川沿いでこれらのメッセージを見かけました。伐採が近々予定されている木には役所が張り紙をしています。まるで死刑宣告のよう。

Along the Shakujii River, Somei Yoshino cherry trees are planted for miles.  In fact, the area we live in is named Sakuradai which means 'cherry tree hill'.  So, cherry trees are symbolic of our area.  Sadly, however, many of these old cherry trees along the river are coming to the end of their lives, and Nerima Ward started to replace them gradually a few years ago.  During our morning walk, I noticed these messages thanking the trees for their past service.  The Ward Office places a notice on the tree that is scheduled to be felled.  It looks like a notice of execution.

桜の大木がこの狭い地面のなかで十分根を張ることもできずに何十年も植わっていたと思うと、木の寿命が縮むのもうなずけます。

These large trees have been growing in this narrow strip of ground for decades, without being able to spread their roots freely.  No wonder their longevity is short.

さらに歩いていたら、半年ぶりに大福君に会えました。遠くからでもタイガを見つけて嬉しそうに飼い主さんたちを引っ張ってきました。

As we were walking further, we met Daifuku whom we had not seen since spring this year.  Daifuku recognised Taiga from a distance and came rushing towards us.

そこへ、先日会ったばかりの「片耳立ちのチコ」君がやって来ました。あまりに勢いよく割り込んできたので、大福君に軽くたしなめられているところです。

There came Chico whom we met recently, the male Maltese-mix with one ear standing.  He rushed in between Daifuku and Taiga and got a stern stare from Daifuku.

川沿いから方向を変えて坂を上ると大きな禅寺の正門にやってきました。

We then walked up the hill and came to the main entrance of a Zen temple.

門の近くにある巨大な一枚岩が威圧的です。

The huge monolith near the gate is very impressive.

これが正門です。写真左端っこに写っている、寺の名前が刻まれている石も、一枚の岩を削ってできています。本堂は林の奥にあるので見えません。

This is the main entrance.  The stone standing on the extreme left of the photo, showing the temple's name, is also carved out of a rock.  The main temple building is not visible from the gate, due to the thick woods.

ここは寺の駐車場の横にある別の入口。

This is a side entrance next to the temple's car park.

ここ練馬区や隣の板橋区の寺院は、富山県の田舎では見たこと無い広大な敷地に建っています。しかも手入れが行き届いていて、隅々まで公園のように綺麗です。今朝ここを通ったときは敷地の外の公道で落ち葉を掃き掃除している人たちがいました。

Temples in our Nerima-ku and the neighbouring Itabashi-ku stand on vast plot of land.  Back in my home prefecture, I had never seen such huge places for temples or shrines.  Moreover, these temples are so well maintained that they look like public parks.  As we were walking this morning, we saw several people sweeping the fallen leaves on the street, outside of the temple compound.

公園で At the Park

 今日もまた朝から青空。昨日の木枯らしのような冷たい風は収まって、おだやかな秋の日でした。城北中央公園の木々は一部がほんの少し色づいてきた感じです。

It was yet another sunny day today.  Moreover, the cold wind of yesterday was completely gone, and we enjoyed a very mild autumn day.  Some of the trees in the Johoku Central Park have started to turn yellow.

公園の上のほうへ上がる途中の窪地では、初めてみるシェルティーがカラスに挑んでいました。カラスは余裕で、高い枝にいたのが下にある、木の名前が書かれた板の上へ舞い降りてきました。

On our way to the upper part of the park, we met a new face.  A Shelty was trying to scare a crow.  However, the bird felt bold enough to come down from a higher branch to a post standing next to the tree.

タイガもカラスを見ると追いかける衝動にかられます。生ゴミ出しの日にはカラスが袋を突いているところに出くわすと、駆けだして追い払います。

Taiga also is driven to chase crows.  If she spots a crow poking its beaks into a plastic bag on the kitchen garbage collection day, she dashed out.  

シェルティーは女の子で、ハナちゃん、9歳だそうです。

The Shelty is a girl, named Hana, 9 years old.

スバル君もやって来ました。ドッグランを利用していた頃は一緒によく遊んだので、今でも仲良しです。

There came Subaru, too.  He used to play with Taiga in the dog park, well before the pandemic and lockdown, and their friendship has lasted.

古代家の隣の広場で一休み。

We had a rest in the field next to the woodland where the reconstructed ancient dwelling was.

平日なので、古代家の林の向こうの陸上競技場は静かです。

There is a sports ground beyond the woodland but, it being a weekday, it was all quiet.

タイガはさっそく草風呂。

今日も晴天 Another fine day

 今朝は柿の木広場へ行きました。貸し切り状態です。

We went to the Persimmon Park this morning.  With no-one else around, we had the place to ourselves.

タイガの毛色は光の具合でとても赤く見えることがあります。

最近シャンプーしたばかりなのに草の上でゴロゴロ。飼い主の心知らず。
I only shampooed her the other day, but she cares not and enjoys grass bath.

夏のあいださぼっていた草むしりやら、冬に向けた常緑樹の剪定（フェイジョア、オリーブ、月桂樹）などを決行。草むしりに関しては今週2度目で、やっと終わりました。あと残っているのは、去年の暮に買った初めての欄であるシンビジュームの植え替えです。夏の間に汚らしくなったのと、株の一部が枯れているのでやる気が出ないのとで、まだやっていませんでした。３株もあります。

私が忙しくしている間、タイガは寒そうに地面にうずくまっていました。家の中にいれば良いものを、木枯らしのように冷たい風を受けながら、またしても地面の上で腹ばいです。これから寒くなるとそう頻繁にシャンプーできないので、なるべく効果を長持ちさせてほしい。

During the summer months, I did very little in the way of removing weeds, so I did a lot of plucking weeds 2 days ago and finished it today.  Also, some of the evergreen trees (feijoa, olives, bay laurel) had to be pruned before winter.  Now, all that is left to do is to re-pot the 3 cymbidium plants (I still have not done it!) that I bought at the end of last year.  What was I thinking getting those large varieties?  

As I was working hard, Taiga insisted on coming out of the house in spite of the cold wind.  She crouched on the ground getting her belly dirty.  The effect of shampoo does not last with her.

冷たい風の中の作業はきついですが、おかげで蚊取り線香なしで済みました。2日前の作業のときは２ヵ所に蚊取り線香を置いてでしたが、それでも蚊は必死でまとわりついてきました。黄色の食用菊「松風」が咲き始めました。右側は紫のノコンギク。

Working in the cold wind is tough but, at least, I do not get bothered by mosquitoes.  It was quite different two days ago, when I had to keep mosquito repellent incense in two places.  Even then, mosquitoes bothered me since I had to move around.

The yellow edible chrysanthemum has started to bloom, as well as the purple wild asters.

カメラのせいで赤っぽい花になっていますが、実物は濃い紫です。咲き始めは白っぽく、咲き進むにつれて色が濃くなるのはピンクの花の「桃山」と同じ。

My camera does not capture the true colour, but this variety has deep purple flowers.  At the beginning, the petals are pale/white but they turn deep purple as the flowers fully open.  My new wild aster called Momoyama is also the same - white at the start, then turn pink.

ワクチン注射 Getting vaccinated

６種 混合ワクチンの接種で動物病院へ行ってきました。隣町の江古田にあり、うちから城北公園へ行くよりも少し遠い距離ですが、タイガはまだまだ元気で歩いていけます。半年前の5月に脂肪腫除去の手術で来た時は随分と緊張していましたが、今回はわりとリラックスして受付で座り込んでいました。

I took Taiga to the clinic for vaccination (6 combination) this morning.  The clinic is in the neighbouring town and the distance is a little farther than walking to Johoku Park.  However, the distance is short enough for Taiga to manage without exerting herself.  Last time when we visited the clinic in May this year, it was for the operation to remove the large lipoma from her chest, and she was stressed out just waiting in the reception area.  This time, she was more or less relaxed.

この口が開いている表情はストレスからではなく、緊張がほぐれたことによるものです。なので荒い呼吸もヨダレたらたら現象もなし。

触診のために体重計を兼ねたテーブルに乗せたら、何と、今回の体重は20.85kg。去年の５月の手術のときはちょうど25kg、今年の初めから少しずつダイエットして今年５月の手術のときは手術前で22.75kg、脂肪腫除去の後は150g減って22.60kg、そして今日の20.85kgです。先生によると「これくらいがちょうど」だそうですが、私の目標は19-20kgのレンジです。タイガは皮が分厚い個体なのか、現在 触って背骨は分かる程度でも、あばら骨は感じられません。よって、あばら骨が目標です。

In the photo below, although her mouth is open, it is not due to being nervous but the opposite.  As a result, there was no fast and heavy breathing, or drooling.  

When she was lifted onto the table for palpation, the scale indicated her weight as 20.85kg!  When she had an operation in May last year, she weighed 25kg.  I started to put her on a diet at the beginning of this year and, at the time of the lipoma operation in May this year, she weighed 22.75kg before the operation, and 22.60kg after the operation.  She continued her diet and now she weighs 20.85kg.  According to the doctor, the current weight is just right for Taiga.  I personally want her to weigh between 19-20kg.  When I touch her body, I can feel her spine but not her ribs.  So, my target is to feel her ribs.

Afterwards, we had a rest at the small park a few doors away from the clinic.

犬ちゅ～るを最後の一滴まで美味しそうに食べていました。

Taiga's (or any dog's) favourite treat - she enjoyed it to the very last.

帰宅して玄関前でほぼ放心状態のタイガ。

After coming home, she sat in front of the door in a dazed state.

公園で At the Park

午後の早い時間に タイガのシャンプーをしたので、自然乾燥の旅で公園へ行きました。ポカポカ天気で大変な人出でした。

After shampooing Taiga, we went out for natural drying, since the day was warm and dry.  At the Johoku Park, there were lots of people enjoying the fine weather after the recent typhoons.

公園管理事務所近くの広場には公園利用者の自転車がズラリ。夏の間はこの広場にクレープ屋やアイスクリーム売りのワゴン車が止まっていたのに、今日は見かけませんでした。

In the open space near the park management office, there was a row of visitors' bicycles.  During the summer months, we used to see vans here, selling crepes and ice cream, but not today.

珍しい子に遭遇。スキッパーキです。日本ではブリーダーさんの数が限られているので、この公園では数年前に2頭見かけただけです。２頭とも練馬から来ていた女の子でしたが、タイガより数歳上だったので今は相当 年をとっているはず。スキッパーキは世界的にも数が少ないそうで、その原因のひとつに、一度に生まれる頭数が２-3頭、出産の頻度も少ないそうです。

この子は池袋から来ているそうで、名前はジャック、２歳半の男の子だそうです。

We met a new face - a male Schipperke, named Jack, 2 1/2 years old.  It is very rare to see this breed in Japan.  There are few Schipperke breeders.  Also, the birth rate of this breed is extremely low, I am told.  According to what I was told, a female may give birth to 2 or 3 pups at a time, and the number of times she gives birth in her lifetime is also very limited.  Before I chose the Kaiken breed, I searched for Schipperke breeders, but I could find only two in the Kanto region, and they both told me that they were not sure when they could expect next birth.

 

とても小柄でちょうどやって来たボストンテリアの男の子と同じくらいの体格。

Jack is small and he is just the right size to play with a Boston terrier.

帰り道にある家では毎年、春と秋に楽しみにしている花木が満開でした。カッシアとかセンナという名で呼ばれている花で、満開になると遠くからでもハデハデに目立ちます。

On our way home, we passed by a house to see the blossoms that I look forward to every spring and autumn.  This tree belongs to the group called Cassia or Senna, and the flowers are so attractive even from a distance.

Looking at the tree from the sunny side, you get more flowers.

広い括りでカッシアやセンナとして売られている仲間には様々なバリエーションがあって、春にしか咲かないものもあれば、花柄が小さくて頼りない印象のものもあります。が、この個体の花は大輪、かつ花びらも肉厚、そして春と秋に開花。しかも秋の開花だからと言って花数が少なくなるということもなし。

Within the families of Cassia/Senna, there seem to be many different varieties.  Some of them bloom only in spring, and some of them have smaller flowers with flimsy petals.  However, this tree's flowers are large, with thick petals, and it blooms twice a year.  Moreover, autumn bloom is no less abundant than the spring bloom.

今年の春の開花後、この家のご主人が徹底的に切り戻しているところに遭遇しました。毎年楽しみにしているので撤去しないで、と頼んだら「しぶとい植物だから大丈夫」と言われました。そのときの剪定で残ったのは地上30ｃｍも無いほどでしたが（黒い部分）、半年の間にすっかり回復したようです。

After the spring flowers this year, I happened to pass by this house when the owner was cutting the tree down to almost nothing.  I begged him not to get rid of it since I was looking forward to the flowers every year.  He told me not to worry, since the plant was too tough even if he wanted to exterminate it.  True to his words, the tree recovered fully from the less than 30 cm stem that was left in the ground.
