朝散歩 Morning Walk

 朝散歩に出かけるのを待たされたタイガは、私の朝食・シャワーが終わって階段の下から呼んでもすぐには降りてこない。しょうがないのでオヤツで釣って出かけました。

Having been made to wait for me to get ready after my breakfast and shower, Taiga was taking time to come downstairs when I called her.

公園へ向かう道の途中にある民家のモッコウバラが満開。

On our way to the park, there was a house with the fence covered with rose flowers.

It is a shame that this variety has no scent at all.

公園手前の草地で会った柴の子犬。生後６か月の女の子で、名前は「メンチ」。聞き間違いかと思って聞き直したら、「メンチカツのメンチ」と言われました。

We met a new face when we arrived at the park.  A 6-month old Shiba puppy called Menchi.

タイガと遊びたそうですが、タイガはおこちゃまのエネルギーには反応しなくなりました。自分が子犬だったころは相手の迷惑もかまわずに「遊んで」を要求していたくせに。

She was fearless and tried to get Taiga to play with her.  Taiga no longer shows any interest in puppies, even though she was just like this puppy when she was young.

タイガは幼い子に臭い嗅ぎされても怒りません。

Taiga does not mind anyone taking a sniff at her, even a puppy.

いつもの林の中を歩いていたら、公園整備のクルマが通りました。おもちゃのような小さいトラックで、運転してみたくなります。

公園の上の広場ではノムラモミジの赤い葉っぱが展開中。その根元にはハナニラが咲いていて、何ともほのぼのした景色です。そんな中でタイガはカメラに向かって用足し。

We went up to the higher ground - my favourite part of the park.  It is always deserted and I feel we have the whole place to ourselves.

この草地はいつ来ても人気が少ないので貸し切り気分。

I love this variety more than the better-known "Somei-Yoshino".

 今日の東京の最高気温は23℃もあったそうですが、雨あがりということもあって朝から生ぬるい暖かさでした。公園は新緑が綺麗です。

It rained through the night but, by the time we set out for the park, the sun was out.  The air was humid and warm like an early summer day.  The deciduous trees are getting greener with every rain.

一旦は通り過ぎたフレンチブルドッグの子が飼い主さんをグイグイ引っ張ってこちらに戻ってきました。生後11か月の女の子で名前は「ゆば」ちゃん。ワンコよりも人が大好きだそうです。

A French Bulldog, who had walked passed us once, came back by pulling her owner with all her strength.  An 11-months old girl, named "Yuba", who likes people rather than other dogs.

短いスムースコートのワンコにスリスリされると、体の暖かさが直に伝わってきます。対して、タイガのようにダブルコートの子は、触れた手のひらに冷たい感触。

All the French Bulldogs that I meet are so friendly and affectionate.

リンゴの紅玉が咲き始めました。去年のシンクイムシの食害が残っているので、実は生らないと思いますが念のため梵天で公園の姫リンゴの花から花粉を採取してきました。

One of my apple trees has started flowering.  This is an old variety, introduced from the US more than 100 years ago.  The fruit is small and too sour to be eaten as is, so this variety is popular as a cooking apple.

朝散歩 Morning Walk

 久しぶりに早朝から晴天の一日でした。以前は畑だったところが、相続が起きて今は公園として一般に提供されている草地ではダイコンの花が満開なので入ってみました。数年前まではお年寄りの夫婦がいろんな作物を育てていて広いキウイ棚もあったのに、人の存在ははかないものです。

For the first time in days, we had a blue sky starting from early morning.  The field newly opened to the public was looking vibrant with fresh grass and flowers.  This used to be a large vegetable farm until a few years ago, owned by an old couple who have since passed away.

タイガは花より団子で、サラダバーに夢中。フキ畑のあったところは、これからフキがビュンビュン伸びてきそう。

道を渡って、以前よく歩いた屋敷林に入ってみました。さっきの元畑と同じ所有者のものだったのですが、この部分はいち早く公園用にされていたところです。家は今は取り壊され、うっそうとした孟宗林もなくなり、現在、大型マンションの建設中。今も屋敷林として残っているのは猫の額程度の林です。

古木を背景に、今年も和製のニワトコが蕾をつけています。その後ろの竹林がなくなって青空がのぞいています。

We crossed the road and reached another patch of woods.  This used to be a part of vast woodland with an ancient farm house, owned by the same couple mentioned above.  After the couple were gone, most of the land has been sold and now a huge apartment block is being built.  Only a fraction of what used to be a heavily wooded place has been kept for public use.  Behind the tall tree in the picture used to be a bamboo woodland and the old house.  Now you can see the sky through the scant woods.

シャガが咲き始めています。所有者のおじいさんが生きていたとき、一緒に花を眺めたのを思い出しました。

The fringed iris is in season.  The old man and I once admired these flowers when he was still in good health.

タイガは勝手に先へ行って草を探していました。

久しぶりに茂呂山公園へ行ってみようと道を渡ったら、ちょうど甲斐犬のヒナとセナがやってきました。タイガは嬉しさのあまり小躍りしながら近づいていきます。ヒナはとても律儀な性格で、子犬のころからの先輩であるタイガに対して耳をぺたんこにして近づいてきます。妹分のセナは、別にタイガに遊んでもらったわけではないので全然別の態度。タイガは、自分が赤ちゃんだったときに毎朝遊んでくれたジャックラッセルのパッチに合うと、大きな体で地面を這いつくばるようにして挨拶に行きますが、その様はまるで時代劇に出てくる下僕や奴婢のようで笑えます。

We crossed the road to go to Moroyama Park and ran into Hina and Sena.  Taiga got so excited that she was jumping as she approached them.

茂呂山公園のソメイヨシノはすっかり散って、奥に見える八重桜の関山が咲き始めています。

The Somei-Yoshino cherry trees have lost their flowers, but another variety, Kanzan with double petals, will be in season soon.

３匹そろったところを写真に撮ろうとワンコたちに指示しましたが、よく言う「ペットと子供は不可能」な状態でした。ヒナが一応ポーズをとっても、

りんご紅玉の蕾 Apple Flower Buds

紅玉も「紅の夢」同様、去年の夏にシンクイムシの被害に会いましたが、被害の度合いが比較的軽度だったので蕾の集合が10か所に出ています。もしかして、紅の夢のほうが美味しかった？

This apple tree was damaged by apple stem borer during summer months last year.  Nevertheless, flower buds have come out in 10 different places.

先日届いたコーネリアンチェリーのカザンラクは10号菊鉢に植えました。ミズキ科の苗は初めてなので根っこの形状を確認するのが楽しみでした。この苗の場合、台木は何なのか知りませんが、40センチくらいの長い根が１本、小さなビニールポットの中でぐるぐる巻きになっていました。それ以外は細かい根っこが真っ直ぐ下に向かってびっしり出ている状態。そこで、長い根っこを細根に揃えて切ってから植え付けました。カザンラクは成長が緩慢らしいので、今年１年でどこまでいけるか興味津々。

The Cornelian cherry dogwood that arrived recently has started to show signs of growth.  Although this variety is said to be a slow grower, I am so looking forward to observing its progress this year.

さくらシフォンケーキ Sakura Chiffon Cake

 さくらパウダー入りのシフォンケーキ、ふわふわで美味しいです。さくらパウダーの香が効いているのでバニラオイルは入れません。

A very fluffy and moist chiffon cake with sakura powder - the sakura petals' scent is enough to hide the eggy smell, and no need for vanilla oil.

西洋サンシュユ：カザンラク Cornus mas Kazanlak

コーネリアンチェリーは十数年前に果樹マニアの間で流行っていたのに、まもなく熱が冷めてしまった印象でした。実がなり始めるまでに数年かかり、実際に生った実を食べてみると美味しくなかったことが原因だったようです。

私は去年の12月に公園で偶然見つけたサンシュユの赤い実を味見したら、何と甘酸っぱくて美味しかった！その木は在来のサンシュユなので実のサイズは山野草のクコのような大きさで、味も少し似ていました。ただし、クコのような薬膳っぽい臭みはなく、またサンシュユにあると言われる渋みや苦味も皆無でした。そこで思ったのは、色づいたから食べるのではなく、霜にあたるほど放置しておけば美味しいのかも？

どうせなら大実が良い、と思っていろいろ比較してこの新品種にたどりつきました。カザンラクはブルガリアで改良されたもので、以下がメリット。

１）大実で長さは平均3.5cm (海外サイトでは実の長さを3-5cmと言ってるところもある)。果重は8-9g。ビタミンCが豊富なだけでなく、色々な薬効あり

２）自家結実

３）コーネリアンチェリーにしては矮性品種で、成長が非常に緩慢。放置で最終的に4m、剪定でよりコンパクトに維持できる

４）非常に豊産性でおびただしい量の実が生る

あとは西洋サンシュユに共通の、土を選ばない、暑さ寒さに平気、病害虫の心配ほぼなし。調べているうちに、ある海外サイトでは日本にも以前から入っている「パイオニア」という品種の実は、完熟させると容易に種を取り除くことが可能だそう。カザンラクもそうなるか、試すのが楽しみです。カザンラクが色づくのは欧州で8月後半だそうですが、私は10月頃まで待つ予定。ちょうどその時期はうちの果樹で収穫・生食できるものが無いので好都合です。

苗は、販売しているお店でも新品種なので、樹高の低いものしかない（高さ15cmくらい）と電話で脅されていたのですが、届いたものを見て大変嬉しいサプライズでした。40cm弱。希少品種であることを考えると、これで大満足です。

また、接ぎ木苗なので接ぎ穂が活着したかどうか確認できるよう「今にも新芽が萌え出しそうな苗をを～」とリクエストしたら「そんなの無い！」と言われていたのですが、この苗は新芽が展開し始めています。

私のYouTube動画を見てくれるブルガリア人の女性にカザンラクを買うか迷っていると話して以来、何度も地元のコーネリアンチェリーの様子をご自分の料理動画に組み込んで見せつけて来たので、さっそく書き込みに行ってきます。

Cornelian cherry trees were in vogue among fruit tree gardeners more than 10 years ago but the popularity evaporated just as soon as it began.  The reasons were, as I understood, it took many years before fruiting and, when fruits were at last harvested, they did not taste great.

I got interested in this family of trees when I tasted the leftover fruit off the tree in December last year.  It was a fruit of the indigenous tree (Cornus officinalis) and it tasted sweet and sour, and very nice.  So I thought perhaps if you left the fruits until they got a bit creased on the outside, you do not get bitterness.

I researched and compared a lot of varieties and decided that this Cornus mas Kazanlak was the best variety for me.  This is a variety developed in Bulgaria and it has just been introduced to Japan - there is only one nursery dealing with this variety in Japan.  The following are some of the benefits of Kazanlak.

１）Large fruits with an average size of 3.5cm long (one site overseas says the fruit varies between 3-5cm long), weighing 8-9g.  The fruit is rich in Vitamin C as well as having other medicinal benefits.

２）Self-pollination

３）Dwarf habit and slow grower.  Ultimate height 4m but you can keep it much more compact by pruning.

４）Extremely prolific

スモモの開花 Plum blossoms

 「開花」といっても、ピーク済みの段階。３日前で7割くらいの開花状態だったのが、２日前の雨ですっかり花粉が流れてしまいました。

The plum blossoms are past their peak.  They were 70% open 3 days ago but the heavy rain 2 days ago have more or less washed away the pollen.

これは去年の春に棒苗で届いた「李王」。２階バルコニーでグングン育ち、枝の分岐も過不足ない状態で2022を終了。李王はスーパーで見たことがないので、まだ２年目の苗ながら実を成らせます。とても香の良い品種だそうで今から楽しみ。

The "Riou" plant that arrived in spring last year has grown well and it is covered with flowers.  The fruits of this variety are said to have a superior fragrance so I am looking forward to tasting them this summer.

こちらは同時に届いた、注文の本命だったハニーハート。新苗ではなく、たぶん２年生の苗の枝を切り捨てたもので、年季が入っているのでよく育つだろうと期待していたのに、決して目覚ましい成長ではありませんでした。毎年６月末にスーパーで買って食べるほど好みの品種なので、ぜひ自家製のを味見したいです。

This "Honey Heart" that arrived with the Riou plant has not done as well as Riou.  However, I buy the fruits of this variety every summer in the shop and I know how delicious they are.

こちらは彩の姫。これほど安定して実を成らせる品種はありがたい。プラ袋は南高梅を高接ぎしたもの。

"Sai-no-Hime" is a steady producer and the fruits are really delicious.

こちらはエレファントハート。この苗にも南高梅を接ぎました。

This is "Elephant Heart", a US variety.  The fruit has a very unique taste and flavour and I really love this variety.

知っている人やワンコが家の前を通りそうになると一早く察知して門のところで待ち伏せ。

昨日買ったフレンチラベンダー苗。右の苗は朝に地元ＪＡで買った苗。真ん中と左のは夕方に練馬の渋〇園芸本店へ行って目にとまったもの。なぜ同じような苗が２個も？真ん中のは夕暮れせまる光の中で見たとき、色がとても濃く目に映って、しかも「フレンチラベンダー、ディープパープル」という名前までついていました。右のは単に「フレンチラベンダー」のタグ。その当時の光の具合では濃い赤紫に見えたのと、値段（660円）がＪＡの（350円）よりずっと高かったので、てっきり別の品種かと思ってしまいました。が、今朝の光の中で見て勘違いだったことがわかりました。まぁ、薄暗がりの中で花は買うべからずという教訓になりました。

一番左の苗はフレンチラベンダーの「わたぼうし」。これはいつ見ても好きな品種なので、660円の価値あり。
