ローガンベリー試し採り Loganberry

 ここ２日間、雨が降らなかったので、ローガンベリーのワイマテが色づいてきました。

It has not rained for the last 2 days and Waimate berries are turning red.

まだまだ綺麗な赤い色なので完熟ではありません。

Waimate, when fully ripe, should have a tinge of purple, so these beautiful red berries are not yet ready for harvesting.

が、待ちきれないのでこの１個を試食することにしました。ヘタがちょっとだけ茶色っぽくなっています。でも、結構力をいれないと取れてきませんでした（やっぱりまだ未熟）。無理に引っ張ったので、柔らかい果肉が一部つぶれてしまいました。

Nevertheless, I decided to try this one, being impatient - after all, this is the first year of fruiting and I am dying to know how it tastes.

その１個をもって玄関に入ると、タイガがうずうずしていました。蚊が出るようになったので、タイガを外に出したままにはしません。

When I opened the door with the berry in my hand, Taiga thought it was a treat for her because I was beaming from ear to ear.

その大事な１個。果長を測ると3cm+ ありました。

Lengthwise, it measured a little over 3cm.  It really resembles Tayberry.

ついでに糖度計も登場。12.8度もありました。ベリーとしては立派です。でも、食感は酸味のほうが勝っていた印象です。これからがシーズンなので、もっと良くなるでしょう。

しかも、カメムシが発生する前から熟すなんて有難いです。

The sugar content was 12.8% which is quite high for a berry.  I am looking forward to picking them as they ripen over the next several weeks.  The good thing is, they come into season before the stink bug appears.

グラハムパン Graham Bread

 ヒマワリの種入りグラハムパンを作りました。外皮はバリバリで中身はもっちり、とても香ばしいパンです。

I made Graham bread with sunflower seeds.  The crust is very hard, but soft and moist on the inside.

公園で（午後） At the park (afternoon)

 午後にタイガのシャンプーをしたので、ドライヤーで乾かしきれなかった分を乾燥させるために公園へ行きました。

After shampooing Taiga, we went to the park to get rid of the moisture left behind by the hair dryer.

下のほうのドッグラン近くで、久しぶりに会えた白柴のオモチちゃん。

We didn't go into the dog park since it is very dusty there.  However, near the dog park, we met a few friends.

タイガはオモチちゃんの飼い主さんに撫でてもらいながら、オモチちゃんにも挨拶。

最近急におとなの雰囲気になって、日本昔話の中で人間に化けたら色白の美人になりそう。

この子は初めてみるトイプードルの子。

そこへ、小さな小さな柴犬が到着。体重が6キロしかないそうです（家猫レベル）。

There arrives a tiny Shiba Inu - according to the owner, she weighs only 6kg - a house cat could weigh that much.

顔を正面から見ると、何ともいえず可愛いです。

She is so sweet with round eyes.

このつぶらな瞳。柴にしてはまん丸の目ですね。

あまりの可愛さに見とれて、名前や年を尋ねるのを忘れてしまいました。

I was so taken aback by her cuteness that I totally forgot to as her name or age.

帰り、売店広場へ上がって休んでいたら（オヤツ）、柴犬のカリー君が通りかかりました。

We had a rest at the food court.  Suddenly, Curry, a make Shiba Inu appeared.

生憎今日はカリー君のための手作りオヤツを持っていなかったので、タイガの市販のオヤツを隠しました。

Curry has a food allergy but he can eat without trouble the home-made jerky that I usually carry.  But I forgot to take it with me this afternoon.  So, he stayed away from Taiga's store-bought treat.

また作っておくからね。

I will make some more for next weekend.

帰り道、お靴を履いたトイプードルの女の子に会いました。現在1歳の女の子で、名前はベルちゃん。

On our way home, we met a dog in shoes.

She is a 1-year old Toy Poodle, named Bell.

A truly dainty creature.

飼い主さんによると、とても怖がりな子だそうですが、少しずつタイガに近づいてきます。

According to her mom, Bell is an extremely timid girl.  But her curiosity was gradually overcoming her fear of Taiga.

最後にはちゃんと挨拶できました。

公園で（朝）At the park (morning)

 家を出てすぐ、初めて見る子に出くわしました。

Shortly after leaving home, we met a new face: a black Shiba Inu, named Setoka, 6 months old.

黒柴のセトカちゃん、生後6か月の女の子だそうです。高級ミカンのような名前なので、家に帰っても覚えていました。

She was a bit scared of Taiga's size, but friendly enough.  Since she lives in the same neighbourhood, I am sure we will be meeting again.

タイガのサイズに引いていましたが、とても明るい子です。ご近所のようなので、これからも会えるでしょう。

公園に着くと、林の中で会った白柴のマロ君、５歳だそうです。

When we arrived at the park, we saw another new face: a white Shiba Inu, named Maro, 5 years old.

社交化されていないので、写真では人形のように可愛いのですが実際は近づくとガウガウでした。

He has not been socialised and, although he looks sweet in the photo, he kept growling if we ever tried to approach him.

上のほうの林では、先日見たときはまだ緑色だった和製ニワトコの実が、今では真っ赤に色づいていました。

Japanese elder tree as it is now.  The last time I saw this tree, the berries were still green.  Now, they are bright red.

調べたら、和製ニワトコの実は赤くなった状態が完熟だそうです。また、西洋ニワトコ同様、合わない体質の人（私）が摂取すると下痢・嘔吐の中毒症状が出るそうです。私の場合、十分加熱して作った花びらのシロップを数倍に薄めて飲んでさえあれほど苦しんだので、こんな赤い実を食べるとどうなることやら。

The berries are fully ripe when they are red, unlike the European/American elders whose berries turn dark as they ripen.

野鳥が既に食べてしまった房もあります。

Some of the clusters have been picked by birds already.

緑色の葉っぱを背景に、真っ赤な実は観賞価値があります。ちょっと妖しい雰囲気も。

They look quite attractive against the green background.

私がニワトコに見入っている間、繋がれたタイガは退屈だったようです。何やら枝をおもちゃにしています。

While I was observing the elder tree, Taiga was getting bored.

She has got hold of a branch.

今日はまた格別太って見えます。

She looks overweight more than ever.

それでも、ここはオヤツスポットなので定位置でオヤツを出したところへ友達がやって来ました。

However, this is the usual spot for Taiga's treat, and as I was getting it out of my bag, we saw a friend approaching.

タイガは焦って塀の上に前足を乗せてきましたが、小雪ちゃんの飼い主さんもオヤツを出したので、そっちが気になるよう。

今度は小雪ちゃんが身を乗り出してアピール。

別にタイガを優先したわけではなく、小雪ちゃんにあげたあとタイガにもあげたところです。

I did give it to Koyuki first, but she looks at Taiga as if to say 'That should have been mine, too'.

ふたりともポッチャリ気味なので、ほどほどに。。。

その後は木陰で涼しんでから帰りました。

After parting with Koyuki, we rested in the shade before heading home.

キウイ Kiwi young fruits

毎日の雨はうっとおしいですが、水やり地獄からは解放されるし、何より植物が育ちます。キウイのレインボーレッドの幼果が、数日前に見たときよりもグンと肥大していました。私の人差し指との比較ではこの状態です。

Red-fleshed Kiwi: 'Rainbow Red'.  This is an extremely sweet variety.  The young fruits are growing fast thanks to the rains.

スバル君 At the park

 四中横の草地でスバル君に会えました。久しぶりなのでお互い大興奮で挨拶。

When we arrived at the park, we met Subaru after a long time, so they were both very excited.

As they ran about, Subaru's mom and I had to run to accommodate their moves.  (Since there were small children in the same field, we had to hold on to the leash.)

リードを放せないので、ワンコたちが走り回るのに合わせて飼い主たちが振り回されて転びそうになりました。

タイガは公園に着いたばかりなのでまだまだ遊びたそうでしたが、スバル君は散歩後の帰宅途中だったのでヘロヘロでした。

Taiga, having just arrived at the park, wanted to go on playing but Subaru had finished his walk and was on his way home when we met.  It soon started to rain again, so we had to go home anyway.
