メジロ、その他 Signs of spring

タイガは今朝の散歩に住宅街を選びました。うちのすぐ近所の庭先で見かけたメジロのつがい。寒くてメジロ団子になっています。こちらをチラチラ見ながらも逃げる様子はありません。東京で暮らすなかで、メジロは私の一番好きな野鳥です。子供の頃は晩秋から早春にかけてキクイタダキを見るのが最も楽しみでしたが、東京では見られません。

Taiga wanted to walk through the residential area this morning.  I was excited to see my favourite wild birds, "Japanese White Eye", perched on a branch.  The pair of birds were stuck to each other due to the cold air.  They kept looking at me but showed no sign of flying away.  The White Eye is my best favourite wild bird in Tokyo although, back in Toyama Prefecture, it used to be the Goldrest which is not seen in Tokyo.

カリンの実が１個、枝に挟まっていますが、突いて食べるのでしょうか。

Near the birds is a quince fruit stuck between branches.

サザンカの季節は終わりに近づいているので、代わって梅の花があちこちで満開です。

The sasanqua is coming to the end of the season.  Instead, Ume flowers are in full bloom everywhere, filling the air with their sweet scent.

この家のナツミカンは裏年がないようで、毎年この状態です。

The Japanese bitter orange tree of this house is full of fruits every year.

今日は風が冷たいけど爽やかな朝だったので、石神井川を渡って早宮のあたりまで行きました。帰りに通りがかった家の横で、これが目に留まりました。

Since it was a beautiful morning with crisp air, we had a long walk and crossed the river to walk through another district.  On our way home, I saw this note, inviting passers-by  to take home any of the pots.

矢印が指す深鉢は、ラン鉢として利用できそう。左側のテラコッタ鉢はどれも未使用でとても綺麗な状態ですが、私に必要なのはこの灰色の２鉢です。いただこう！とは言え、まずはタイガを急いで家に連れ帰りました。

The two grey pots seemed tall enough to be used for my cymbidium orchids.  The red terracotta pots on the left were unused and clean, but what I needed were these old pots.  So, I hurried home with Taiga.

鉢のお礼用に、ミネオラとモロを収穫。自転車でさっきの家に駆けつけると、ちょうどご夫婦の姿を見かけたのでオレンジを手渡しすることができました。蘭の株分けに欲しいと思っていたタイプの鉢をゲットできてラッキーでしたが、さらに嬉しかったのは、奥様がブラッドオレンジのモロが何たるかをご存じだったことです。柑橘マニアの私にとって、「ブラッドオレンジ」と言って通じる人に初めて出会えたのは感激でした。

As a way to say 'thank you', I picked some of the Minneola and Moro oranges and hurried back to the house on my bicycle.  As I approached the house, I saw the owners of the house in the garden.  They were very kind people and, what's more, the wife knew what Moro was.  I was so excited since I had never met anybody who knew about blood oranges.

鉢の使用感は、趣があっていい感じです。分厚くて、テラコッタやダオン鉢よりも重いので、大型のシンビジュームをしっかり支えられそうです。鉢の下の部分の浅緑色が苔なのか分からなかったので、洗ってみることにしました。

The pots looked 'used' but I liked the used appearance, too.  They are much heavier than terracotta pots and they will be able to support the huge cymbidium plants.  I decided to wash the pots in case the pale green parts at the bottom were covered with some kind of moss.

ナイロンたわしで力いっぱいこすっても取れないので、どうやら元は装飾だったようです。その証拠に鉢のボトムには、同じ色で厚めのペイントが残っています。

I scrubbed hard but it made no difference.  It turned out that it used to be a part of decoration, as evidenced by the thicker remaining paint on the bottom of the pot.

鉢の内外を洗っても持ち帰った時点の状態と変わらないので、綺麗に洗浄してから家の横に出されていたようです。

I scrubbed further and realised that the pots had been thoroughly cleaned before being placed outside.

苗を買ったときのプラスチックの鉢は軽いので、鉢植え全体の重心はずっと上のほうにあり、微風を受けても簡単に倒れてしまいます。この石のように思い鉢なら大丈夫そうです。

The plastic pot that came with the huge orchid plants are too light, with the result that the centre of gravity is too high.  The plants fall to the ground in a slightest breeze.  These stone-like heavy pots will have no problem supporting the plants.

シンビジュームの株分けについて色々調べたところ、どの苗も実際に株分けできるのは早くても来年の春ですが、鉢があると安心です。

I have been researching about taking care of cymbidium plants.  It seems that none of my 3 plants are ready for dividing and repotting for a few years yet.  Still, it does no harm to have the pots ready.

キンモクセイの実 Fragrant olive

 この記事を載せたあと、ブログ友の「海月ファーム」さんからのご指摘で、写真の庭木は、実はキンモクセイではなく「ウスギモクセイ」であることがわかりました。新たなことを学べました。海月さん、ありがとうございます。

After I posted the article below, a blog friend of mine contacted me to say that the trees in the photos are called Osmanthus fragrans var thunbergi, rather than the Osmanthus proper.  Thanks to her, I have learned something new.

今朝のタイガは住宅街の方角を選んだので、歩きなれた道を散策していたら新たな発見をしました。ある民家の庭先にキンモクセイの木が２本植わっていて、そのいずれにも実が生っていたのです。

Taiga wanted to walk through the neighbourhood this morning instead of going to the park.  As we were ambling through the familiar streets, I noticed something quite new.  The two Osmanthus (fragrant olive) trees in a private garden had fruits on them.  

冬の剪定が終わって実がむき出しになっていたので気づきました。そこで思い出したのが、キンモクセイの英語の呼び方のひとつに、fragrant olive というのがあることです。今まで「オリーブ」という表現を怪訝に思っていましたが、これらの実はオリーブの幼果にそっくりです。キンモクセイの実は食べられないことは無いそうで、花と同じ香がするそうですが、私はイメージ的にスルーです。少なくとも、これからは迷わずにfragrant oliveと呼ぶことができます。

昔読んだ記事では、日本に入ってきたキンモクセイは花着きのよい雄木だけなので、キンモクセイに実が生っている風景は見られない、というような内容がありました。この家のは２本とも雌木ということなのでしょうか。

It has always been said that fragrant olive trees growing in Japan are all male trees and, therefore, one never sees a fragrant olive tree with fruits.  Apparently, when the species was introduced to Japan, only male trees were brought in because male trees get more flowers than female trees.  Therefore, both of these two fragrant olive trees must be very rare female trees.

At any rate, having seen these fruits looking very much like young olive fruits, I now know why one of the names is 'fragrant olive' tree (I used to find the name very strange).

値段に影響されやすい私は、とうとうテーブルシンビジュームも１苗買ってしまいました。もうあのJAの温室へは行きません。

I saw this 'table' cymbidium this morning and could not resist.  The leaves are much more compact than those of the two normal-sized plants I bought about a month ago.  The flowers are also smaller and looking very delicate and modest.

普通サイズの苗の花は巨大で私の好きなハデハデですが、この苗の花は和蘭を思わせるような侘しさがあって気に入りました。（でも、帰宅してテーブルシンビジュームでググったら、この苗の花は「テーブル」のなかではハデハデな部類のようだと分かりました。）

The delicate look of the flowers reminds me of Japanese orchids that come into season during February-March.

開花中の２本の茎に加え、蕾の茎が２本あります。で、あまり露骨に言及したくないけど、気になる人には気になる値段の話ですが、この苗とピンクの花の苗は同じ1,800円でした。黄花のジャイアント苗は2,000円でした。

In addition to the two flowering stems, this plant has two more stems with flower buds.

部屋に入れる前にしばらくバケツ水につけて潅水。

I soaked the plant in a bucket of water before taking it inside.

黄色のジャイアント苗との比較はこう。テーブルの花茎は細いので、次回の開花時にはワイヤーで胡蝶蘭のようにおじぎする格好に調教すれば、コンパクトな草姿になりそうです。

A comparison between today's plant and the normal-sized cymbidium.  The flower stems of the table cymbidium are fine and delicate, which means I will be able to bend them forward to show off the flowers with next season's stems.  Then, the whole plant will be looking much more compact, true to the name of 'table' cymbidium.

黄色の苗は２階部屋へ上げて、それがあった場所に今日の苗を置きました。以前の威圧感がなくなって、スッキリ気分でテレビを見られます。

With this smaller pot sitting where the giant yellow plant used to be, the plants are no longer oppressive.  The giant plant is now sitting in a room upstairs where it gets full sun.

おじぎ姿になったら、水彩画に描いてみたくなるような控えめな雰囲気。

If I can bend the next season's flower stems forward, they will be an ideal material for water colour painting.

昨日から乾燥させておいた鶏ササミのスライスが、おやつらしい状態になってきました。

Taiga's treat with chicken sasami is done, hanging in the extremely dry air on the balcony.  

今日も１にち晴天だったので、カリカリに乾燥しています。電気を使わずこれほど簡単に作れるものなら、冬のうちにたくさん作っておいて冷凍保存すれば長く使えそうです。

We get blue sky almost every day in winter in Tokyo, and the chicken slices are absolutely dry without using any electricity.  I am going to make lots more taking advantage of this weather and keep them in the freezer.

タイガのおやつ作り Making Taiga's treats

 久しぶりにタイガのおやつを作ることにしました。この乾燥した空気のなかでどれだけ乾かすことができるか実験です。私が持っているフードドライヤーだと17時間もかかるので、この電気代高騰の時代に抵抗があります。なので通常はオーブンに頼っています。

I am preparing Taiga's treats, which I have not done for some time.  Taking advantage of this extremely dry winter climate in Tokyo, I am hoping to get it done without having to use the oven.  I do have a food dryer, but it takes 17 hours to complete which makes the oven more user friendly.

使ったのは鶏ササミ。半冷凍状態でスライスすると作業が楽です。各シートにササミ２枚分を広げてあります。

I used half-frozen chicken 'sasami', 2 pieces for each sheet.  It is much easier to slice the meat when it is half-frozen.

風邪でシンビジュームの水やりをさぼっていたので、今日たっぷりバケツ水につけておきました。２週間ぶりの潅水にしては元気そうです。

I did not water the cymbidium plants for more than 2 weeks, so I took enough time today to soak the plants in the bucket of water to compensate for the neglect.  Nevertheless, they looked very vibrant.

苗を買ったとき、黄花の苗には開花中の茎が２本に加え、蕾の茎も２本ありました。その蕾が順調に育っているので、支柱に括り付けて調教しています。夕方５時頃に撮った写真なので、花の色がオレンジっぽく写っていますが、現物は明るい黄色です。

When I bought this yellow flower plant before the New Year, there were 2 stems already in bloom, as well as 2 stems with flower buds.  The flower buds are growing well and the stems are supported by wire.

数日遅れて買ったピンク系のは、もとから開花中の茎が３本。だんだんと花が開いて花柄が大きくなってきました。これはこれで綺麗です。それにしても、従来からのシンビジュームって大柄ですね。テーブルシンビが割高の価格設定で売られている理由が分かった気がします。

I bought this pink flower plant several days later.  This one came with 3 stems with flowers.  The flowers themselves have been opening further and they are now huge.  

These two plants are beautiful and I love them, but I am a little overwhelmed by their sizes - certainly too large for small rooms in my house.  I can now understand why the smaller types called 'table' cymbidiums are priced relatively more expensively.  

道路側に植えてある寒菊は、正月に咲き始めたあと私が風邪て寝ている間にピークを過ぎてしまったようです。

This winter chrysanthemum started flowering in the New Year and it went through its peak while I was in bed with my cold.

シンビをもう一鉢 New cymbidium plant

 今日は地元JAが正月明けの営業初日でした。夕方近くに覗いてみたら、ほとんどの組合員の人たちがまだ活動を始めていないらしく、棚はスカスカ。その状況で温室のラン類に関しては、数鉢だけ入荷したシンビジュームが目立っていました。そのうちの一鉢がこれ。

It was the first business day today for the nearby JA after the New Year holiday.  I looked into the place but most of the shelves were looking empty - members are not active yet.  In the greenhouse section, among the few plants that were there, I saw this and brought it home.

好みの色です。花の少ない季節にはこのタイプの花色が元気をくれます。花茎は3本で、どれも開花中。

My favourite colours for cymbidium.  The plant has 3 flower stems with flowers not quite fully open.  I am sure they will last up to the end of February.

部屋に入れる前に恒例のバケツ水に浸し。

As before, I soaked the plant in a bucket of water before taking the pot into the house.

シンビが２鉢になったので、以前からあるシダ類の鉢は移動。賑やかになって、テレビよりもシンビのほうに目が行きます。

They are a bit loud - instead of watching the TV, my eyes wander towards the flowers.

花が終わったら春に株分けしてそれぞれ２鉢ずつにする予定ですが、来年の今頃も花が見られるといいなあ。YouTubeで株分けの仕方をデモンストレーションしている動画が複数あるので活用します。

I will separate each of the plant into two, after the flowers are gone in spring.  I have found several videos on YouTube in which growers demonstrate how to do it.

早めに夕方散歩に出ました。通りかかった幼児専用の公園ではロウバイが咲き始めていました。梅よりも先に咲くようです。

We went out for our evening walk early.  When we passed by the park dedicated to toddlers, I noticed flowers opening on wintersweet trees.  They bloom early, before Ume plum trees.

素芯八重咲きです。何とも良い香り。

The scent is out of this world.

Calycanthus fertilis

優雅な金魚にうっとり Beautiful Gold Fish

 数か月前、散歩中に見かけた巨大な金魚の今の様子を見に行きました。この寒い季節でも元気に泳ぎ回っているのにびっくり。優雅な動きに吸い込まれるように見入ってしまいました。個人のお宅なので動画に関する許可を求めたら、快諾していただけました。

I saw these beautiful gold fish some months ago while walking with Taiga.  I was curious to see how they were in this cold weather - they were just as active as before.  The fish are beautiful and move in such an elegant way that I could watch them for hours, if the fish tanks were not placed by the side of a public street.  They belong to a private house in a residential area so, before uploading the video, I asked for the owner's permission which was given readily.

 昨夜の雨は止んで、今朝の散歩のときまでには青空でした。タイガは相変わらずカメラ撮影に非協力的。

Last night's rain was up by the time we went out for our morning walk.  As usual, Taiga was not interested in posing for the camera.

帰宅して、ここ数日「やらなければ」と思っていたことを実行しました。暮に買ったシンビジュームの蕾の茎が順調に伸びてきて、そろそろ支柱が必要なときです。

After coming home, I decided to do what I had in my mind for the last few days.  The flower bud stems are growing and they need props to stay upright when the flowers are open.

蘭用の支柱というのを買ってきました。2種類ありましたが、直立用の太いほう。細いのはたぶん、胡蝶蘭のように花茎がおじぎする格好に作るため、曲げて使うのだと思います。

まずはこの大きいほう。

The wire props I got are made specially for orchids with large and heavy flowers.  You can also get finer wire props which are meant for bending the flower stem.  To bend these large cymbidium stems would require a special skill, I think.

２か所で止めて、今後の成長につれて増やしていきます。

For the moment, two points to tie the larger stem.

こちらは株の後ろのほうにある出遅れの蕾。

This is the smaller stem growing at the back of the plant.

この茎はまだ一か所で十分。

Just one point is enough for now.

完了です。テレビの横にあるのを毎日見ていると段々と愛着がわいてきて、以前よりも綺麗な花に見えます。花には芳香はなく生のアスパラガスのような匂いがしますが、イヤな臭いではありません。

Done.  I am hoping that the smaller stem at the back will gradually grow towards the front - after all, that is where the plant gets the most light.

週に一度の水やりで、バケツ水に30分ほどつけておきました。後で取りに来たら、今日の強風で地面に倒れていました！

Before taking the plant into the house, I soaked the pot in a bucket of water.  I am supposed to do this once a week during the winter months when the plant is kept indoors.  When I came to retrieve the plant, the strong wind (it was a very windy day) had knocked it down to the ground!

でも、ダメージは見当たらないのでラッキー、と思っています。

Happily, it looked none the worse for the fall.
