公園で At the park

 公園で久しぶりに甲斐犬のヒナとセナを見かけたので、声を掛けたらこちらに向かってきました。タイガは座り込んで待ち伏せ。

I spotted Hina and Sena from a distance and called out to them.  As they headed towards us, Taiga sat down getting ready to meet them.

まるで想像上の藪の陰から、獲物が近づいて来るのを狙っているかのよう。こういうときは、猫のようにシッポを振って精神集中です。

Taiga is in an ambush mode hiding herself behind an imaginary bush, with her tail wagging like a cat when concentrating on the prey.

待ちきれずに飛び出しました。

She could wait no longer and dashed out prematurely.  She was in full view anyway.

昔ならこのあと大はしゃぎで追いかけっこでしたが、10歳になったタイガは自分の体力を考えて控えめ。

If it were 3-4 years ago, they would have had a good chase but, with Taiga now being 10 years old, it is a mild, friendly reunion.

ヒナは舌全体が黒い。タイガの舌は口の奥のほうに２か所黒い斑点があるだけ。

Kaiken dogs have dark spots on the tongue.  Hina being a black brindle Kai, the whole tongue is dark.  

タイガは冷たい草の上でくつろぎ始めました。

Suddenly, Taiga started relaxing on the cool grass,

せっかく久しぶりに会えたのに。。。

as if she has already forgotten her company.

帰宅して、道側に植えてあるブラックベリー、ナバホの現在を確認。

２年目の去年、太いケインが１本だけ出たので、扇型に枝を誘引しておきました。

The blackberry "Navaho" is growing well.  Last year, only one cain came out and I spread the branches into a fan shape.

地植えパワーのおかげで、まるで２，３本の株のように繁茂しています。来年用のケインがこれまでのところ５本出てきましたが、２本だけ残して太らせています。

Next year's cains have started to come out.  So far, 5 cains came out but I am keeping just 2 in order to concentrate the energy.

ラズベリーの季節 Raspberries season

 ラズベリーのルビービューティが色づき始めました。10号菊鉢で２株ありますが、去年の春に小苗で届いて以来、順調に株が太っています。来年用のケインがわさわさ出てきたので、今の４-５倍の株になりそう。ケインはしだれるように伸びるので、写真を撮るには下から持ち上げて。

The fruits of raspberry "Ruby Beauty" (a.k.a. "Shortcake") are getting ripe.  I bought two of these plants in spring last year and they are growing vigorously.  Each pot has several new shoots for next year's fruiting, compared to only two cains from last year and now fruiting.

ちょっと早めの試食なので、酸味が強いけど大変美味しい。種は簡単に嚙み潰せる柔らかさなので気になりません。

A bit on the early side, but I could not resist tasting the first fruits of this year.  I love the combination of acidity and sweetness of this variety.  It also has a bit of flavour.

パッションフルーツも順調。

The passion fruits are also coming along nicely.

一番大きいものは鶏卵のLサイズをとっくに超えて、市販のものに負けないサイズになっています。

The largest fruit is already the size of those you see in the shop.

パンダンリーフ苗 Pandan plant

 予約してあったパンダンリーフ苗が入荷したので、練馬の渋谷園芸本店までチャリを飛ばして行ってきました。

香が良いハーブで、ご飯系やスイーツにも利用できるようです。私はスイーツを念頭に育てていきます。まず作ってみたいのは、色を抽出して緑のシフォンケーキを作ること。抹茶は粉末で使いやすいのでスイーツ作りでよく見かけますが、味は不味い。あの土っぽい風味はせいぜい餡子との組み合わせが無難で、洋菓子には向かないと個人的には思っています。そこで、甘い香りがするというパンダンリーフ。

家に帰りついたタイミングで、近所のトイプードルのダン君が通りかかりました。さらっとパンダンリーフについて説明したら、ダン君ママの目がいかにも「匂い嗅がせて」と言わんばかり。私も興味あったので葉っぱを一枚ちぎってクシャクシャにして嗅いだら、「ウソッ！」。ただの青臭い葉っぱでした。ダン君ママにも確認してもらったら、「苗が大きくなったら甘い香りになるのかもよ」と言われる始末。そうなることを期待して世話していきます。

I had reserved this plant some time ago and today, they rang me to say that the plant was in stock now.  So, I went to the shop on my bicycle and got it at last - the plant I had always wanted to grow.  This is a tropical herb with a sweet fragrance in the flesh of the leaf, so I am told.  However, after I got home, I tried one leaf and smelt it - absolutely no fragrance other than the usual grassy smell of a torn leaf.

早く変身してください。

I am hoping that the smell will change as the plant grows larger.

こちらは厚物の菊。大菊でピンクは珍しいので育ててみようと思いました。かの有名な国華園の本領発揮ですね。

I also got a chrysanthemum plant.  It is still a tiny cutting but, when it grows, the flowers will be huge.  A pink flower variety of this kind is very unusual, so I wanted to try.

ユリが開花 Lilies

 テッポウユリ系のユリが咲き始めました。２年目です。ここ東京ではササユリや山百合は生存不可能なので、この花を眺めてササユリを連想しています。草丈は60ｃｍほどの寸詰まりなので、狭いうちの庭にぴったり。

Early flowering lily has started to bloom.  This is a hybrid of heat tolerant lilies.  The flowers remind me of a wild lily in the Japanese mountains - they cannot survive in residential areas.

タイガは昨日、9年ぶりに全身麻酔の手術を受けました。前回は生後11か月のときの避妊手術で、桜の開花時期でした。今回は、左耳の内側にできた腫瘍を取り除くためのもの。腫瘍は耳掃除の際に去年の夏頃から気づいていたのですが、最近、大きくなり始めたので除去することに。ついでに左目のまぶたにできていた直径３ミリほどのニキビっぽいものも取ってもらいました。こちらは3年くらい前からのもので、一旦できたあとずっと大きさに変化なしだったのであまり心配していませんでした。が、もし将来肥大し始めて手術で切除、となるとまた全身麻酔の施術になって、老犬には大きな負担です。先生も同感だったので即決。

手術前にまず血液検査とレントゲン。いずれも異常なしでしたが、特に血液検査の結果は、各項目が正常値で健康状態は100点満点だそうです。ということは、長年のお肉のトッピングや、食後のヨーグルト・牛乳による体への悪影響は無かったようです。

昨日の朝に預けて、夕方６時頃に迎えに行きました。無事終わってワクワクしている私とは対照的に、タイガは私と視線を合わせようともしない。よほど恨んでいるのでしょうか。今朝になっても、散歩中に話しかけてもソッポを向いたまま。大好きな近所の紀州犬のウメちゃんと遭遇して一緒に歩いていても、私のことだけは無視。ウメちゃんママと大笑いしながら帰りました。

Taiga had an operation yesterday to remove the growth in her left ear.  I first noticed it in summer last year, when I was cleaning her ears.  The growth became larger recently and I felt I could not leave it any longer.  Taiga is 10 years old but she came out of the operation without any problem.  Prior to the operation, the doctor ran an analysis of her blood and took X-ray photos.  The blood test showed that she was 100% healthy, with each item falling within the normal range.  What a relief!

スーパーの帰りに寄ったＪＡで綺麗なイングリッシュラベンダーがあったので持ち帰り。

English lavender that I found in the local shop this morning.  Very few plants survive on my balcony and I am hoping this, together with the 3 French lavenders I bought a few months ago, will grow there.

私のカメラでは忠実に再現できませんが、色の濃い紫です。春に買ったフレンチラベンダーと合わせて４株になってしまいました。うちの２階バルコニーは夏場に灼熱の砂漠になるので、柑橘類を何本も枯死・瀕死状態にしてしまいましたが、ラベンダーなら大丈夫でしょう。

オリーブ開花 Olive blossoms

 オリーブが２本とも開花しました。一足早く左のシプレッシーノが咲き始めて、昨日の時点ではもうピークを過ぎていましたが、昨日やっと右のピクアルも開花が始まりました。オリーブの花の香を初めて知りました。私の好きな科の木（シナノキ）の花の香に非常によく似ています。シナノキは今、城北公園で咲いているので、これからは毎年自宅でもあの香が楽しめることになります。

今日は午後から雨。昨日ほんの少し授粉作業ができたので、もともと自家結実性のあるピクアルなら少しは実がつくかも、と期待しています。

The one on the left started to flower several days earlier than the one on the right.  The one on the right started flowering yesterday and I managed to pollinate a few of them from the one on the left.

シプレッシーノの木は直立性が強いそうですが、まさにそんな感じ。

Cipressino: the flowers are almost all gone.

ピクアルは下のほうにも枝がたくさん出る性質があるそうです。枝が多いほど実も多くなりそうで嬉しい。

Picual:  although the pollination was not ideal, this variety is said to be self-pollinating, so there might be some fruit setting.

The olive flowers have a fragrance similar to that of the linden tree blossoms, my favourite flowers.

パッションフルーツ開花 Passion Fruit Flower

昨日（５月５日）、パッションフルーツの第一花が開花しました。朝起きてカーテンを開けたときは開花直後のようでしたが、ワンコの散歩から帰ったときには花粉が熟していました。さっそく授粉したので、夕方にはもう子房が少し膨らんでいました。分かり易い植物。

The first flower of my passion fruit plant opened yesterday, 5th of May.  I pollinated it in the morning and, by the evening, the ovary of the flower had grown a little.

ブラックベリーなど Blackberries etc

 ３年くらい前から、ブラックベリーはナバホのみになりました。今満開です。毎年、翌年用のケインが１本だけ出てきますが、それが年ごとに太くなって、今あるケインは根元で直径４センチ近くあります。枝を扇型に広げて、花つきを最大限にしています。

Blackberry 'Navaho' in full bloom.  All these flowers are from just one cane, whose branches are spread sideways so as to maximise the number of flowers.  The cane seems to become bigger every year and the current cane, which came out last summer, measures almost 4cm in diameter near the ground.

ラズベリーのルビービューティーの花は雨が降っているうちに終わってしまいました。でもしっかり結実するはずです。もう来年用のケインが数本出ているので、来年は今の倍以上に繁茂するはず。

先日届いたビルベリーに極小の花が咲いています。通常のビルベリーの花でさえ、ブルーベリーの花の数分の一という小さなものなのに、この実生品種のはさらに小さい。でも耐暑性があるそうなので、この暑い練馬区でどうなるか楽しみです。それにしても清楚な外観で、こちらの心まで洗われるような気分。ムリか。

The bilberry plant that arrived recently is in bloom - tiny flowers.  The flowers are even smaller than regular bilberry flowers.  This is a seedling selected in Germany to increase heat tolerance.  

「ムリだよ」と言わんばかりの笑い顔のタイガ。夕日を背に、なんだかノスタルジックな雰囲気をかもし出しています。タイガはついに10歳になりました。相変わらず朗らかで元気に暮らしています。

Taiga has just become 10 years old - how time flies.  She is just as healthy and easy-going as she was as a puppy.
