静かな正月 Peaceful New Year

 タイガと二人暮らしで且つ人付き合いの悪い私には、ストレスフリーの理想的な正月を送っています。

Fully enjoying the quiet New Year, with no-one to bother us with visits due to Covid.  After the 'Big Clean', which is a must in Japan at the end of December, I am enjoying the unusually clean state of the house inside and out.  This is particularly rewarding since the cleaning activity usually takes place in the freezing cold wind at year-end.

この寒いなか、一昨年の秋に植えた遅咲きの菊が咲いています。本来なら11月に咲く品種ですが、オレンジ苗の日陰になって育成が悪く、今になって咲き始めました。黒味を帯びた赤い花は珍しいと思います。

This late-flowering variety of chrysanthemum has just started to bloom.

最近の寒さで野鳥はエサが少ないのか、数個の田口早生が齧られています。

The recent cold spell and lack of food seem to have been the cause of wild birds feeding on my tangerines.

被害を受けた実の近くには野鳥のフンが掛かっていて、大粒の種が混じっているのでヒヨドリに間違いないと思います。

Judging from the bird droppings containing large seeds, I think the birds were 'hiyodori' (Hysipetes amaurotis).

スズメは可愛いので、毎年晩秋から半年間エサ台を設置しています。遠くから見ていると、10羽くらい集まるとエサ台からはじき出される個体が２，３羽いるので、弱気のスズメ用に地面にも置いています。

The sparrow is my favourite and I leave bird seeds out for 6 months until it gets warm.  When many sparrows gather, some of them get pushed out, so I leave some food on the ground for the weaker ones.

散歩の途中で久しぶりに会った柴犬のハナちゃんと、弟のヤマト君。ハナちゃんは昔からの馴染みなのでタイガが喜んで近づいていったら、上から目線で唸りました。笑っちゃいますが、これはワンコによくある行動です。車、バイク、自転車などに乗せてもらって移動すると、地面から見上げているワンコに対して自分が偉くなった気分になるようです。

On our way home from the park, we met familiar faces: Hana and her brother Yamato.  Taiga was so happy to see Hana after a long time but when she approached Hana, she looked down on Taiga and growled as if to say 'Stay back, you low-class creature'.  I could not contain my laughter.

ハナちゃんはタイガより１歳上で現在９歳。タイガとは異なり、人やワンコに愛想を売らない性格です。

Hana is 1 year older than Taiga, at 9.

ヤマトは２歳台。子犬の頃はいつも私に飛びついて来ていたのに、今ではすっかり落ち着いています。

Yamato is now 2 years old, and much quieter than when he was a puppy.

公園で（12月31日） At the park (Dec 31st)

 公園入口の草地で、柴犬のカリー君に会いました。穏やかな性格の子ですが、すっかり大人の顔に成長しています。

When we arrived at the park, we saw Curry, a male Shiba Inu.  As a fully grown male, he no longer has a puppy face, although he remains a very mild-mannered dog.

そこへ、ケアンテリアのチャンプが到着。

There arrived Champ, a male Cairn Terrier.

チャンプとは、現在工事中の場所が草地だった数年前からの付き合いなので、いつ会ってもその頃の思い出がよみがえります。

They have known each other since they were puppies - they used to play together every evening in the field that is currently under construction (they are building an underground reservoir).

林を通って公園の上のほうへ向います。向こうのベンチにはトイプードルのウニ君がいました。

After that, we walked through the woods to go up to the upper part of the park.  We could see Uni, a male Toy Poodle at the bench in the distance.

ウニ君も例の草地以来の知り合い。内気なウニ君ですが、子犬の頃に毎夕方、一緒に遊んだタイガとは今も仲良しです。

Uni is an extremely shy individual but he holds no reserve with Taiga, since they used to play every day in the field mentioned above.

公園上のほうへ移動すると、賑やかな集まりがありました。さっきのチャンプに加え、甲斐犬姉妹のヒナとセナ、さらにボーダーのカイ君がいました。

When we arrived at the upper part of the park, there was a noisy gathering of familiar faces: Champ, two Kaiken sisters (Hina and Sena), and male Border Collie named Kai.

ヒナは律儀な和犬のイメージぴったりの子で、例の草地にデビューした子犬の頃すでに４歳くらいだったタイガを「先輩」と認識しているようです。タイガと会うと、こうやって耳をぺったんこにして挨拶してくれます。タイガが偉そうな態度ですが。

Hina, the elder of the Kai sisters, is a typical Japanese dog who respects his/her elders.  When she started appearing at the aforementioned field as a baby, Taiga was already 4 years old.  Since then, Hina has always been respectful to Taiga.  She always greets Taiga with her ears flat.

まだ１歳台のセナ以外は皆、例の草地以来の友達なので顔を合わせて嬉しそうです。

Apart from Sena, who has just become 1 year old, they are all old friends from the days of the field across the river.

ごちゃごちゃしながら大騒ぎ。

セナは本物の女の子なので、カイとチャンプに大人気です。

Sena, as the only intact girl, is popular with Kai and Champ.

この草地は他に人気が無かったので、少し自由に走らせました。

As there were no other park users in this field, we allowed the dogs to run free for a while.

みんな本当に楽しそうです。

2021年最後の黄金のしずく Last of Golden Drops of 2021

 タイガは2年くらい前から、チッコタレになりました。寝ている間に漏れるようです。特に寒い季節はホットカーペットの上で暖かく眠っている間に、該当する箇所のあたりの筋肉が緩むようです。毎日のことではないのでしばらくはガマンするのですが、そのうち独特の臭いが気になります。

今朝は実際にその「水滴」を目の当たりにしました。ホットカーペットのカバーはアクリル100%なので毛先に浮いたままです。ガラス戸ごしに朝日を浴びてキラキラ光っていました。

During cold months, when Taiga sleeps on the warm electric carpet, she sometimes becomes incontinent.  I came down to the living room this morning to find these droplets on the electric carpet cover.

The fact she had moved away from those drops probably meant that she knew what had happened - as a dog, she must be aware of the distinct smell.

公園へ行く前に汚れたカバーを洗濯機に放り込んで、ホットカーペットの上に消臭剤をスプレーしておきました。これで気持ちよく正月を迎えられます。

I put the offending carpet cover into the washing machine before leaving for the park, and sprayed the electric carpet with deodorant.   Now we can greet the New Year with fresh smelling carpet cover.

ローガンベリーのベークトチーズケーキ Baked Cheesecake with Loganberries

 夏に冷凍保存したローガンベリーがまだ沢山残っているので、ベークトチーズケーキを作ってみました。ローガンベリーのツルは来年用に数本、元気に育っています。

I made a baked cheesecake with home-grown Loganberries which I had preserved as frozen.  The cheesecake tastes just like a regular raspberry cheesecake.

 ドッグランへ向かう途中、売店のある広場で秋田犬をみかけました。灰色の虎柄です。名前は「ポン」君、10歳だそうです。

Just before reaching the dog park, we saw a new face - 10-year old, male Akita Inu, named 'Pon'.

ポン君とタイガの挨拶。初対面にしてはあまり緊張していないようです。

ドッグランに入ると、先週の日曜日に初めて会った「一家」が迎えてくれました。レオンベルガー２頭とバーニーズが一緒に飼われているそうです。バーニーズでさえかなりの大型犬ですが、レオンベルガーは超大型犬なので、３頭がひとつの部屋で寝そべっていると、人間は足の踏み場に気をつけて移動しなければならないそうです。一緒に写り込んでいる真っ黒のフレンチブルドッグは、レオンベルガーの女の子のファンです。

When we entered the dog park, the 'large-dog family' came to welcome us: two Leonbergers (male and female) and a female Bernese Mountain Dog living in the same family.  The black French Bulldog is a fan of the female Leonberger, happening to be sniffing the Bernese.

四六時中こうやってひっついている。この姿勢はフレンチの後脚にかなりの負担がかかるはずですが、フレンチ本人はまったく気にならないようです。レオンベルガーという犬種は優しい気性なのでガマンしてやっているようです。

This is the usual scene.  He is obsessed with the female Leonberger.  Luckily for the Frenchy, the Leonberger girl is a very tolerant individual.

やはり先週の日曜日に初めて見かけた、甲斐犬のラッキー君が到着。

The Kaiken we met last Sunday, named Lucky, has arrived.

Unfortunately for Taiga, Lucky is more interested in playing with other dogs of his own generation.

今日もドッグランは大盛況でしたが、その喧噪を忘れさせるのが帰りに寄った屋敷林。ここはいつ来ても人気がないので、いろんな鳥の鳴き声が聞けます。

After the mayhem of the dog park, it was nice to walk through the private woodland on our way home.  I never see anyone else walking in these woods and I can enjoy the singing of many different kinds of birds.

他は紅葉が終わっているので、この屋敷林が最後です。

These are the last of autumn leaves this year.
