輸入ナツメ苗の現状 Imported jujube trees now

 今日は台風22号が関東に最接近する日だということで、朝から空が暗かったです。普通、台風の風は生暖かいというイメージを持っていましたが、今日は朝の風からずっと冷たいままでした。

Typhoon No. 22 was approaching closest to the Kanto Region today, and the sky was dark from early morning.  Normally, I expect typhoon-related winds to be warm, but the wind was cold for the whole day.

タイガが選んだ今朝の散歩コースは、隣接する桜台６丁目でした。狭い路地を歩いていると、たわわに実をつけた柿の木の枝の間をメジロたちが騒がしく飛び交っていました。

For this morning's walk, Taiga chose the neighbouring district.  As we were walking through a narrow back alley, I heard White Eyes making noises as they flew among the branches of a persimmon tree with tons of fruits.

今が完熟なのか、まさに「柿色」の実です。柿のように酸っぱ過ぎない果物が大好きなので、もしこれが甘柿なら、こんなに沢山生っているなんて羨ましい限りです。

In Japanese, we call this colour 'kaki-iro', meaning persimmon colour, instead of orange colour.  The persimmon is one of my most favourite fruits, since they are extremely sweet but not too sour.  I secretly congratulated the owners of this tree.

台風に備えてバルコニーの排水口が詰まらないよう、帰宅してから掃除しました。結局、一粒の雨も降らずに台風22号は通り過ぎて行きました。ただし、同じ東京の遥か南の八丈島などは大変だったようです。

今日の冷たい風を受けてナツメの葉っぱが一気に秋めいてきました。これ↓は、去年の12月に届いた3本の輸入苗のひとつ、無核金絲棗で最も落葉が激しい。最初は水やりが足りていないのかと思い潅水しましたが、葉っぱに全く変化なし。まさか、コガネ幼虫に根っこを食べられた？とも疑いましたが、鉢を斜めに持ち上げると根っこが鉢底からはみ出していました。となると、唯一考えられるのは秋の落葉です。

After coming home, I started cleaning the balcony floor so that the drainage would not be blocked by fallen leaves.  In the end, not a single drop of rain for the whole day, and typhoon No. 22 passed by.  However, the islands far south of Tokyo suffered great damages according to reports.

The cold winds of last few days brought autumn to my jujube trees.  This is one of the 3 imported jujubes that were delivered to me in December last year.  It is Seedless Gold Thread jujube, and this has lost leaves more than other trees.  At first, I thought it needed more water, but watering made no difference.  I then thought of bugs that eat roots, but when I partially lifted the pot, I saw roots coming out of the bottom.  The only possibility left was that the tree was getting ready for winter.

無核金絲棗には５個の実が生りました。新苗の初年度なので、開花、結実、肥大の全てが本来のタイミングより大幅に遅れています。さらに、実の形状もカタログ写真のとは違う。うちのは丸っこいです。

The Seedless Gold Thread tree has 5 young fruits.  Since this is the initial year of growth of a newly grafted tree, flowering, fruit setting and everything else is behind the normal schedule.  Also, the shape of the fruit does not conform to the standard (see the catalogue photo below).

他の実は以下のとおり。果皮の色から推測して、果肉は完熟時には白になりそうです。

The other young fruits of this tree are shown below.  Judging by the colour of the skin, I think the flesh will be white when fully ripe.

こちらの２個は早脆王。無核金絲棗より一足先に開花したあと、幼果の成長が遅くて結局同時期に熟しそうです。この苗は元々枝が広がっていたのに、最近葉っぱがかなり落ちたので更にスカスカになってしまいました。

The 2 young fruits below are on the Early Crisp King jujube.  This tree flowered earlier than the Seedless Gold Thread, but the growing speed of the young fruits was slow, and, in the end, they will likely mature at the same time.  This tree also lost a lot of leaves recently.

３本の輸入苗のうち最も葉っぱをキープできているのは蟠棗ですが、葉はショボショボしてきました。先日、１個だけ実がついていたのをクルクル回して観察していたら枝ごともげてしまったのは残念です。しかも、この品種が注文した３本のうちの本命でした。

Of the 3 imported jujubes, Panzao is keeping its leaves most.  Nevertheless, the leaves are looking sorry.  This tree had just one fruit until recently.  As I was turning the young fruit around to see it better, the whole limb came off.  Moreover, this variety was the reason I placed the order.

散歩 Walks

 今朝の散歩は地元住宅街を歩きました。秋らしく祭りや催しが行われる時期です。これは隣町の江古田での芸術祭を宣伝するポスター。行ったことがないので具体的な内容は知りませんが、江古田には武蔵野音楽大学の江古田キャンパスや日本大学芸術学部があるので、学生の街的な雰囲気があります。

We walked in our neighbourhood for this morning's walk, when we saw posters.  Autumn is the time of the year when there are festivals and events - they associate autumn with 'culture'.  This poster advertises an art festival in Ekoda which is our neighbouring town.  The Musashino Academia Musicae and the Nihon University College of Art are in Ekoda.  They probably play an active part in the festival.

こちらも行ったことのない祭り。練馬駅の北口で開催のようですが、練馬はうちから遠いので年に２,３回  渋谷園芸へ植物を見に行く程度です。基本的に人群れの中に自分を置くと、疲れる。

This poster is for the Nerima Ward Festival which will be held near the North Exit of the Nerima Station.  I have never been to this event, since Nerima is quite far from my house.  However, I do visit the large plant nursery a few times a year, near the Nerima Station, to see if they have anything interesting.

This bush has more flowers than those in the Johoku Park, so it may be a cultivated variety.

タイガがまた獣臭を放っていたので午後にシャンプーして、その後は自然乾燥の旅で城北公園へ向かいました。台風が接近しているわりには良い天気です。

Taiga was getting smelly again, so I shampooed her in the afternoon.  We then headed for the Johoku Park to get her coat dry in the sun.  Considering that a typhoon was approaching the Kanto Region, the weather was sunny and dry.

昨日の子猫を朝散歩中に初めて見たときは、このあたりで向こう側の乾いた川底にいました。台風で増水すると逃げようがありません。対岸の地下には調整池の第１期が完成済みで、川底の脇の塀のような部分を超えるほどの増水があると、地下の調整池に収容される仕組みのようです。

When I first saw the kitten during yesterday's morning walk, it was somewhere along this stretch of dry riverbank, on the opposite side.  When the typhoon hits Tokyo, the water level will rise, and the kitten would have no chance of survival.  This is the First Phase of the underground adjustment reservoir to cope with floods, that has been completed recently.  If the flood water overflows above the fence, it will be accommodated by the adjustment reservoir which is 30 metres deep in the ground.

林の手前の草刈りがされたあと、刈り取った草はそのままなので、歩いていると蒸れた臭いがします。本物の芝生でこれをやったら茶色く腐ってしまいそうですが、ここの芝生はもうイネ科の雑草に駆逐されているので、その雑草は数回雨が降れば復活してきます。

After they cut the grass at last, they left the hay behind, and in the warm air, the hay was beginning to smell.  If they did this with genuine lawn, it would turn brown and die.  However, lawn has long been driven out by the tough wild grass which will come back after a few rains.

公園上のほうのイチョウ並木を歩いていたら、珍しい実の付き方をしているイチョウの木が1本ありました。

As we were walking along the avenue of ginkgo trees, I saw one ginkgo tree with strange clusters of fruits.

これです。まるでブドウの房のように塊りで実がついています。

Normally, ginkgo fruits (nuts) are spread out over the tree, but on this tree, they grow in clusters like grapes.

今日は湿度が低めだったので、タイガの毛がよく乾きました。帰ってから仕上げのドライヤーを掛けますが、その前にオヤツ休憩。

Today's humidity was relatively low, and Taiga's coat got dry nicely.  I will give her coat a final dry at home, but before heading home, a treat break.

現在12歳5か月。口の周りが白くなってきています。それでも、毛ヅヤが良いと、散歩中によく褒められます。

Taiga is now 12 years and 5 months old, and her face is getting white around the mouth, showing her age.  Nevertheless, people often remark on her shiny coat.

最近の雨であちこちの草地でキノコが生えています。

After recent rains, we see large white mushrooms springing out in fields.

ググってみたら、「オオシロカラカサタケ」の写真がこれらと似ていました。もし本当にそれなら毒キノコだそうで、もう二度と指先で触ったりしません。

By searching on the internet, I came across the photos of Chlorophyllum molybdites, and the description said that it was poisonous.  I will never touch them again with my fingers.

子猫救出 Kitten rescue

今朝、城北公園の川べりを歩いていると、工事中の向こう岸の川底に黒い点があるのが気になりました。まさか、と思って目を凝らして見ると、やはり子猫です。石神井川は岸から川底までは10メートル近くあります。降りる階段などむろん無いので、何等かの拍子で落ちたとしか考えられません。カメラレンズをズームして確認。耳をかすかに動かしたので生きています。 

As I was walking the dog along the river at the Johoku Park, a dark dot caught my eyes.  I stopped and confirmed that it was a kitten!  He (for convenience, I call it 'he') was crouching on the dry riverbed where the shallow water did not reach.  Above him was the construction site where they have been building an underground reservoir to deal with floods.  The bank is nearly 10 metres tall and there was no way that the kitten got there other than by falling.  When I zoomed in with my camera, I noticed that the kitten's ears were moving slightly.

さらにズームしてみると、背中を丸めてなんとも頼りなさそう。今は水深が深いところで20cmほどしかないので川底の両脇が露わになっていますが、台風22号が関東に最も接近する9日には増水して深さ1メートルは超えるでしょう。石神井川は昔は「暴れ川」と呼ばれていたそうで水量の増減が激しく、その洪水対策としていま調整池が建設されているところです。

By zooming in further, I could see how forlorn he was with his round back.  Currently, the water is about 20 cm deep and there is dry space on either side of the riverbed.  However, typhoon No. 22 is approaching.  At its peak on 9th October, the water will easily exceed 1 metre.  The Shakujii River is known for its extremes between low and high levels of water and that is why they are constructing the adjustment reservoir.

ちょうど犬友が通りがかったので、一緒に（加勢してもらって）工事事務所の監督さんに会いに行き、事情を説明して保健所および警察に電話してくれるよう要請しました（個人が電話するより大型公共工事の事業所のほうが影響力ある）。その後、保健所に登録して公園の猫にエサやりしている知人に電話。二人で午後の早い時間に今朝の工事事務所に行き、電話の結果を尋ねると、「消防の人がやって来て川底に降りて救出を試みたが逃げられた」とのことでした。人間を恐れる野良の子猫にとって、逃走することしかできなかったようです。

その後、二人で川岸にそって探し回ったところ、かなりの時間が経ってやっと発見。そのときも、写真を撮ることなど考える余裕もなく、どうやってまずエサを与えるか、いろいろ考えてプラスチック袋に食品トレイをいれ、その上に臭いの強いウェットフードを４種類入れて、ヒモに吊るして川底へ下ろしました。これ↓は、近くのコンビニで買ってきた40メートルの園芸用ヒモ。あとで、その40メートルの有難さを実感しました。

Luckily, an acquaintance came along with his dog.  I asked him to accompany me to go to the management office and speak to the chief (more clout by recruiting a friend).  We requested the chief to phone both the Nerima Ward Public Health Office as well as the police (more clout when a chief of public works calls, rather than an individual).  After getting home, I rang a friend who is a registered person permitted to feed stray cats in the Johoku Park.  We met after lunch and visited this morning's management office.  We were told that people from the Fire Department came and tried to catch the kitten but failed.  A feral kitten afraid of humans could only think of running away.

We then started looking for the kitten along the river.  It took us a long time, since we had to look in two opposite directions starting from the point I saw the cat this morning.  At last, we found him (again, no time to think of taking photos).  The first thing we wanted to do was to feed him.  After discussing, we placed a plastic tray inside a plastic bag with handles and then put 4 types of wet food with strong aromas.  I got a ball of string from the nearest shop - the string was 40 metres which came in handy later.  We tied the plastic bag to the string and lowered it to the riverbed.

子猫がうずくまっている場所から３メートルくらい目先にエサを下ろしました。その間、子猫は何が起きているか、ジッと警戒して見ていました。エサが着地すると、ほどなく歩み寄って、袋の中に顔を突っ込んで食べ始めました。

We placed the bag about 3 metres away from the kitten.  He was watching intently what we were doing.  Soon after we placed the bag on the ground, the kitten came and put his head inside the bag to eat the food.

一心不乱に食べています。尻尾を体の横につけているのは、落ち着いているからでしょうか？　強風で吊るしたヒモが揺れているのがわかります。

He never once looked up but kept eating - he must have been starving.  Looking at his tail by his body, I felt that he was relaxed.  The string kept swaying in the strong wind.

一旦 子猫のお腹が満たされたあと、これからどうするかについて二人で話し合っているところへ、もう一人加わりました。その人は初対面のひとで、私たちが子猫にエサを届けようとしているのをみた妹さんが電話連絡してきたそうです。

三人であれころ話し合っているうちに、かなり時間がたちました。救出自体、非常に困難で、普通は１日では終わらない上に、いざ救出したあと子猫の行く先についても事前に考えをまとめておくべきだからです。

とにかく、一般人が川底へ降りていくのは禁じられています。川岸のコンクリ壁にはハシゴのような取っ手が埋め込まれている箇所がありますが、しろうとが10メートルも下へ伝って降りるのは危険で、実際、過去に一人の人が命を落としたことがあるそうです。

最終的に、捕獲カゴを借りてきました。それに、先ほどの40メートル紐を使って３か所に紐を括り付けて、三人でバランスを取りながら強風のなか、川底へ下ろしました。さっき、あんなに餌を食べたあとなので「カゴに入るのは何時になるやら」と覚悟していたのですが、ほどなく子猫はカゴに入ってきて、またしても餌を食べ始めました。カゴの入口から奥まで餌を置いてあったので、奥まで侵入した瞬間にトラップドアを閉じて確保。上から見ていて驚いたのは、普通、扉が閉まったとたんにネコは暴れるはずなのに、この子はジッとうずくまっていました。

猫が入ったので、また三人して強風に揺れるカゴを慎重に引き上げました。

猫が怖がらないように「やったぁー」と三人で声を殺しながら大喜びしている間も、子猫はおとなしくしてます。

The plate came back completely clean.  While we were discussing what to do next, a stranger approached us saying that her sister had phoned her after seeing us trying to feed the kitten.  Such a welcome addition to discuss the matter on hand.  Normally, rescuing a cat in this circumstance takes more than a day.  Assuming we succeed in the rescue, what would we do with the cat?  Talking about all these took us a long time.

At any rate, going down to the riverbed for us is forbidden.  There are handles embedded in the concrete wall of the riverbank, but a lay person trying to go down the 10 metres lost his life in the past.

Miraculously, we managed to get a cage designed for rescuing cats.  We tied strings in 3 places on the cage to minimise swaying.  Three of us held a string each and lowered the cage carefully in the strong wind.  We were half resigned to wait for a long time, since the kitten had just eaten.  Amazingly, the kitten walked up to the cage and entered it to eat more.  The moment he reached the deep end of the cage we shut the trap door.  It really surprised us to see that the kitten remained calm.  Normally, the cat would panic once trapped.

With the cat inside the cage, we started lifting the cage gingerly.  After placing the cage at our feet, we were elated but suppressed our voices as we congratulated each other so as not to startle the kitten.  Meanwhile, the kitten remained perfectly peaceful.

あまりにも順調な救出劇に、三人とも半信半疑のままお互いを称え会っていたところへ、消防車がやって来て近くの橋の上で止まりました。複数の電話通報があったのでやって来たそうです。どうやら、私たち三人が延々と時間をかけて四苦八苦しているのを、両岸を通った人たちが連絡してくれたようです。既に暗くなり始めているので写真がボケていますが、消防の人たちはかなり若くて爽やか。消防隊のオジサンイメージが変わってしまいました。救出作業には間に合わなかったけど、来てくれただけでも感謝でした。

肝心の子猫はというと、妹さんから連絡を受けてやって来た方が一晩預かり、明日、NPO法人に連絡してくださることになりました。そのNPO法人は猫の保護活動の一環として、避妊・去勢手術、さらには里親探しもしてくれるそうです。

While we were still jubilant for the rescue operation that went too smoothly, a fire engine arrived and stopped on the bridge nearby.  According to the firefighters who just arrived, there had been a few calls from concerned public about us struggling to rescue the cat.  Those people must have passed by us on either side of the river, but we were too occupied to notice.  It was getting dark, and the photo is blurred, but the three firefighters were young with really pleasant manners, in contrast to the image I always had - middle-aged burly men.  Although they arrived too late, we were nevertheless grateful for their intention.

As to the kitten, the lady who joined us after getting a call from her sister will take care of it overnight.  She will phone the cat rescue NPO in Nerima tomorrow morning.  The NPO rescues, gives necessary medical care including spaying/neutering, as well as finding a forever home.

紀州犬ウメちゃん Ume, the Kishu

 今朝は湿度が高くて朝散歩を早めに切り上げようとして歩いていたら、公園のベンチで休んでいる紀州犬ウメちゃんに会えました。うちとウメちゃんの家は30メートルほどしか離れていませんが、暑い季節はお互い外出を最小限に抑えているので、あまり会えません。

After last night's rain, it was a muggy morning, and we turned back to go home earlier than usual, when we saw Ume, a female Kishu ken, and her mom resting at a bench.   She lives only about 30 metres away from our home.  However, in summer months, we do not go out unless necessary, which reduces our chances of running into each other.

ふたりの挨拶は、いつ見てもタイガのほうが緊張しています。ウメちゃんはタイガよりも１歳年下ですが、むしろタイガを検査するような姿勢です。

When these two meet, it is Taiga who stands to attention.  Ume is one year younger than Taiga, but her posture is as if inspecting Taiga.

タイガは耳を後ろに倒し、緊張してジッとしたまま。対して、ウメちゃんの耳は前を向いています。

そのうちウメママが「オヤツ」と言ったので、ふたりは大喜び。

オヤツが終わると、ウメママがカメラを出してタイガをパチリ。ウメちゃんはオヤツの後は、「どうでもいいや」と言わんばかりにそっぽを向いています。

After the treat session, Ume's mom took out her camera and started taking Taiga's photos.  Ume is no longer interested in what goes on, once she has had her treat.

ウメママがシャッターを押しながらおだてるので、すっかりモデル気分のタイガ。しっかりウメママと視線を合わせています。

休憩のあとは一緒に帰宅しました。

As she presses the camera shutter, Ume mom showers Taiga with praises which makes her feel like a super model.  Taiga's gaze is fixed on Ume mom.

After the break, we headed home together.

中国大実ナツメ Jujube cultivar unknown

 今年の春に練馬の渋谷園芸本店で買った品種不明の棗です。名札落ち苗で、そのお店が過去に「中国大実ナツメ」のタグで苗を販売していたうちの１本かも知れないということでした。葉っぱの形状から日本種でないことは確実だったので買ってみました。非常に豊産性で、最終的に10個残して後は摘果。色づき次第食べていたので、その10個のうち今は３個だけ残っています。

This is the jujube tree that I bought at a large nursery in Nerima in spring this year.  The tree had no name tag and the only thing the shop assistants could tell me was that they used to sell a Chinese variety and this tree might be a leftover from those days.  Judging by the shape of the leaves, I knew that it was not a Japanese jujube, so I brought it home.  This tree has proved to be extremely prolific, and I kept removing young fruits until I was left with 10 to mature.  Of the 10 fruits, I now have only 3 left, since I have been picking others as they became ripe.

The following are the 3 fruits, in descending order.

葉っぱと幼果の形状から一時は「郎棗」かと思っていましたが、最終的な実の形がこんなに丸っこいなら郎棗ではないと思います。

Looking at the shape of the leaves and the cylindrical young fruits, I at first though the tree was Lang jujube.  However, the shape of the fruits became roundish as they matured, and I no longer think this to be Lang.

一番大きい実を切ってみました。糖度計によると47.1%
I cut the largest one to see how sweet it was, and the Brix meter showed 47.1%.

こちらは48.0%。あくまでも糖度計の数値ですが、これまでで一番高いです。

食べてみると確かに甘い。そして熟すと果肉が白くなる皇帝やうちの日本種の実にはない、独特の旨味があります（写真ではこの果肉は白っぽいですが、実際は薄緑色）。

This half's sugar content hit 48.0%, according to the gadget.  This is the highest I have seen.  When I ate it, it was indeed sweet.  Moreover, there was a unique taste that I had not tasted in jujubes whose flesh turn white when ripe such as Emperor jujube or the Japanese variety (in the photo, the flesh may look pale, but it was light green).

今年は皇帝、日本種、中国大実を味見できました。あと残るは早脆王（２個）と無核金絲棗（5個）の実で、これらは完熟にはまだ時間がかかりそうです。

収穫済みの品種を比較すると、以下のようになります：

実の大きさ：　皇帝＞中国大実＞日本種

糖度：　　　　中国大実＞皇帝＝日本種

酸味：　　　　日本種＞中国大実＞皇帝

果汁の多さ：　日本種＞皇帝＝中国大実

糖度と酸味を重視する私にとって、今のところ日本種が一番好みです。日本種の実の糖度は今年は測っていませんが、去年の10月14日の記事では最高で47.0%が出ています。酸味に関しては、以前育てていた輸入苗の台木が酸棗だったようで、直径1.5cmほどのまん丸の実が生りました。うちの日本種の実の一部には、その酸棗よりも酸っぱい場合がありました。日本ナツメには果汁が十分あります。唯一の難点は、実が小さいこと。

This year, so far, I have tasted Emperor jujube, Japanese jujube and today's unknown variety.  There yet remain Early Crisp King (2 young fruits) and Seedless Gold Thread (5 young fruits).  They will take a little longer to ripen.

Of the varieties I have tasted, the following is my personal observation:

Size of fruit:        Emperor ＞ Unknown variety ＞ Japanese

Sugar content:  Unknown variety ＞Emperor ＝ Japanese

Tartness:             Japanese ＞ Unknown variety ＞ Emperor

Juiciness:           Japanese ＞ Emperor ＝ Unknown variety

I value sweetness and tartness in jujube fruits more than anything, so my favourite as of now is the Japanese jujube.  I did not measure the sugar content of the Japanese jujube this year, but the article on 14th October 2024 shows its sugar content is about the same as Emperor jujube's.  As to tartness, the Japanese jujube was as sour as the fruits of the Sour Jujube, and sometimes even more sour.  (I once grew a sucker from an imported jujube tree's root stock, and it turned out to be the Sour Jujube.  Sour jujube is the most commonly used wild jujube as root stocks in China.)  Also, the Japanese jujube is sufficiently juicy.  The only snag is its small size.
