モミジ盆栽 Maple tree bonsai

 赤葉モミジの盆栽が今日やっとできました。

A bonsai with red leaf maple seedlings has been set up, at last.

3日ほど前に足をつけて日光干しにして乾燥させました。

I attached the legs to the pot 3 days ago and left it on the upstairs balcony so that it would dry fast in the full sun every day.

乾燥させたあとでも、この材質には弾力性があり、粘土というよりは樹脂製の素材です。手にとると全然重みがなくて、本当にこれで役割を果たせるのか不安になるほどです。

Even after getting dry, the pot is somewhat soft and resilient - it feels more like resin, rather than clay.  When I hold it in my hand, it feels light as tissue paper, and it makes me worry if this is really going to do the job as a bonsai pot.

植え付け作業を外でやると蚊の大群に襲われるので、部屋の中で行います。軽石を発芽苗が植わっていた土と混ぜて用土にします。仕上げは水で湿らせておいたコケ。

I gathered all I needed in a room upstairs, since doing it outside would attract a swarm of mosquitoes.  I mixed the pumice with the soil of the seedlings.  The moss is for the finishing touch.

初めての試みにしては、いとも簡単に作業を終了。この器を作り終えた時点では「大き過ぎ！」と思って絶望していましたが、実際に苗を植えてみると、たぶんコケが体裁を整えてくれたおかげで、大失敗というほどには感じていません。でも、いつかお店でまともな鉢を見かけたら、それに植え替えます。

Even though I had never set up a bonsai before, the work was done in no time.  When I made the pot several days ago, I was dismayed to see how large it was relative to the sizes of the seedlings.  However, after actually planting the seedlings, I thought they looked not too bad, probably thanks to the effect of the moss.

こうやってみると、赤葉モミジって結構カワイイですね。たくさん種を蒔いたうちの４個だけ発芽して、うち１個は緑色の葉。そして赤葉のうちの１本は、最近近所へ嫁に行きました。当初考えていた「３本仕立て」よりは、この２本のほうが余裕があって良かったです。ちなみに、緑色のを使わなかった理由は、成長スピードが赤葉とは全然異なり、今では30cm近くに伸びているので、一緒の鉢に盆栽として植えるには適していないからです。

Seeing the seedlings in the pot, I am amazed how pretty they look.  I sowed many seeds in autumn last year, but only 4 of them germinated.  One of them was a normal, green leaf maple.  Of the 3 red leaf maples, one was given away to my neighbour recently.  Although, originally, I was thinking of a bonsai with 3 red leaf maples, I think that would have been too crowded.  As to the green leaf seedling, its growth habit is too different - it is now as tall as 30 cm, and not suitable for use with the red seedlings in the same bonsai pot.

コケはいくらでもあったので、気前よく使いました。

I used the moss generously to cover the surface of the soil.

鉢に足が着いていると水はけに関して安心です。

It was worth adding the legs to the pot for better drainage.

今日も発狂しそうなほどの蒸し暑さでした。今の時期、毎日は買い物に出なくて良いよう、まとめ買いしていますが、今日はその食料補充の日で、八百屋さんとスーパーをハシゴしました。帰宅すると、即、冷水シャワーです。

夕方散歩ではタイガも疲れていて、草地に着くと座り込みです。

It was another maddeningly hot and humid day today.  In this weather, I try to buy foodstuff enough for 2-3 days.  Today was one of those days when I had to replenish the fridge.  After visiting a greengrocer and a supermarket, it was lifesaving to get into a cold shower.  

During our evening walk, Taiga was also exhausted from the heat and sat down on the grass as soon as we reached the nearest field.

私はセミの声を聴きながら、呼吸するのにもエネルギー節約しながらじっとしています。こんな暑さでも、真冬の惨めなほど寒い日には懐かしく思いだすのでしょうか。

As to myself, listening to the deafening sounds of cicadas, I tried to save my energy even when breathing.  Will I ever miss these hot and humid summer days, on a miserably cold winter day?

名札落ちの棗の名前 Name of the jujube cultivar unknown

 練馬の渋谷園芸で買った名札落ちの棗苗は、たぶん「郎棗（ランザオ、Langzao）」（英語圏では Lang jujube）だと思います。この苗の葉っぱは他の品種とは異なっていて、例えるなら月桂樹の葉っぱに似ています。それほど特異な葉なので、Youtubeで様々な動画を見ているうちに郎棗以外には考えられなくなりました。ちなみに、Youtubedで見る際、ショート動画に出てくるLang jujubeの苗のほうが、葉っぱがよく観察できておすすめです。通常の動画では大抵、アメリカの広々とした個人の庭で地植えになっていて、木が大きすぎて葉っぱの様子を細かく観察するには不向きです。今後は、反証が挙がるまで、郎棗と呼びます。

では、Lang jujubeの評判は？というと、大してブリリアントではない印象。米国およびオーストラリアでは梨棗が人気で、以前から流通している中国棗の順位付けは以下が一般的のようです：

Shanxi Li  jujube（山西梨棗）＞ Li jujube（梨棗）＞ Lang jujube（郎棗）

Shanxi Li は Li の改良版で、より大きくより甘く、よりジューシー、というのが定評。

The jujube tree that I bought at a large nursery in Nerima had no name tag on it, and the people at the shop could not help me with the name.  Having gone through countless videos on Youtube, I am now convinced that it is Lang jujube.  The leaves of this tree are unlike any other I have seen so far - they look like bay leaves.   In identifying the cultivar, the short videos on Youtube have been very helpful, since many of them show leaves of young trees up close.  In contrast, in normal videos, the trees are tall, growing in the ground of spacious gardens in the US, and it is not easy to observe the leaves.

In the future, unless otherwise proven, I am going to call this tree 'Lang jujube'.

As to the reputation of Lang jujube, it does not seem so brilliant.  In the US and Australia, Li jujubes seem much more popular.  Of the old established Chinese varieties, the following order seems to be widely accepted:

Shanxi Li > Li > Lang

Shanxi Li is said to be an improvement on Li, and its fruits are larger, sweeter, and juicier.

苗はまだ小ぶりですが、非常に豊産性です。8月に入ったので、そろそろ幼果の間引きを始めようと思っています。最終的には10個を完熟させたいです。

The tree is still small, but it is extremely prolific.  Since it is already August and this variety is said to ripen from September onwards, I should start thinning the fruits.  Ultimately, I want to reduce them to 10, before they ripen.

今は人差し指の頭程度の大きさ。完熟は９月以降だそうです。

Currently, the young fruits are the size of my index fingertip.

非常に豊産性の品種のようで、開花すると花のクラスターごとにほぼ確実にいくつかの幼果ができます。

This tree is so prolific that every cluster of flowers ends up with some fruit setting.

スモモなど Plum etc

鉢植えのハニーハートに１個だけ実が残っていました。鉢植えなので毎年数個しか生らず、しかも葉っぱも実も、コガネ虫の害に会いがちです。残った１個はリンゴのように袋掛けにして保護してありました。ハニーハートは早生種で、６月末から八百屋さんで見かけます。ただし、非常にマイナーな品種らしく、うちの地域では１件の八百屋さんが扱うだけです。その早生種が、袋のおかげかいつまで経っても落果しないので、今日採ってしまうことにしました。

There was one fruit still left on the plum tree called 'Honey Heart'.  Growing in a pot, it produces only a few fruits every year.  Moreover, this year, scarab beetles have been eating both the fruits and leaves.  So, I tried to protect the last fruit with a bag designed for apples.  This cultivar normally ripens very early, and I can find the fruits in the shop at the end of June every year.  However, it being a very minor variety, only one greengrocer in my area sells it.  Despite the early ripening habit, this one fruit has remained on the tree, probably thanks to the protection given by the bag.

本来なら、袋を外したら数日間  直射日光に当てて全体的に色づかせるのが良いとは思いますが、露出した状態だとまた食害にあう可能性があるので直ちにとってしまいます。

I decided to pick it today.  Normally, you should leave the fruit for several days after removing the bag, so that the whole fruit will become red in the sun.  However, I dared not leave it exposed due to the risk of being damaged by the scarab.

半割にしてみると、袋のせいか色づき方が一様ではない。この品種は完熟すると半離核なので気に入っています。右の半身の最も色が濃い部分に糖度計を当ててみると、25.3度ありました。

When I cut the fruit in half, the colouring was not uniform, probably because of the bag.  At least, I could see that it was ripe since one side of the fruit detached easily from the stone.  When I applied the brix meter to the darkest spot on the left half, it showed 25.3% sugar content.

左の半身のほうは29.8度。この品種の平均糖度は14度台なので、かなり高い状態です。ただし、糖度計の数値はあくまでも、最も色づいている1点に当てて出たものであり、他の色が薄い部分は14度程度でした。酸味が少ない品種なので、とても食べやすいです。

The left side showed 29.8%.  The average sugar content of this variety is 14-15%, so these figures are extremely high.  However, I only applied the instrument to the darkest spots where the sugar content should be the highest.  Applying the gadget to the paler parts showed figures around 14%.  I like this variety since the acidity is very low.

今日は朝から蒸し風呂のような一日でした。必要に迫られて外に出ると 滝汗です。

夕方散歩で城北公園に着くと、以前会ったことのあるボーダーコリーの子犬に会えました。最近人気のブルーマールの美しい子で、アビー君、現在 1歳1か月だそうです。

It was unbelievably humid today staring from early morning.  Out of necessity, I went out of the house a few times and came back with sweat streaming down.

We went to the Johoku Park for our evening walk.  On arrival, we ran into the Border Collie we met once before, named Abby.  He is a beautiful blue merle, which has become highly popular among several breeds.  His coat is still short since he is only 1 year and 1 month old.

子犬とは思えないくらい落ち着いた子で、タイガと静かに挨拶。

He may be a puppy, but he is very mild mannered even when greeting Taiga.

そこへ最近よく会うシュナウザーのジョン君が到着。

There came John, 5 years old Schnauzer, whom we met recently.

挨拶代わりに、いきなりジョン君がアビー君に飛びつきました。

Instead of greeting, John jumped at Abby without warning.

アビー君は決して吠えることはなく、ただし怯えることもなくやり過ごしました。どうやらジョン君は、子犬で未去勢のアビー君に反応したようです。

Abby never barked or growled, but he was not scared, either.  It seems that John was reacting to Abby, a puppy, for being an intact male.

アビー君が去ったあと、ジャックラッセルの初対面の女の子が到着。ライラちゃん、７歳。とてもフレンドリーな子で、タイガにもジョン君にも愛嬌を振りまいていました。

After Abby left us, a female Jack Russell arrived.  Her name is Laila, 7 yeas old.  She was extremely friendly with everyone, even though we met her for the first time.

ジョン君は嬉しそうにライラママに近づいて行きます。

John looked delighted with Laila and approached her mom.

撫でてもらって、さっきまでとは表情が一変。ぬいぐるみ人形のような顔です。

Laila's mom cuddled him, and his face was very different from earlier.  He now looked like a stuffed doll.

みんなと別れたあと、テニスコート横の草地へ行くとカンタがいました。

After leaving John and Laila, we headed for the field next to the tennis court, where Kanta was already resting.

この蒸し暑いなか、最高に気だるくてお互い挨拶する気にもなれない様子です。タイガは草を食べたあと、

In this unbearably muggy air, everyone was barely surviving and could not be bothered with greeting.  Taiga started eating the grass and then

did her usual rolling on the grass.  I only shampooed her yesterday but now she was already collecting dirt on her.

ガバッと起きて現実に逆戻り。

She suddenly sat up and tried to get her bearings.

カンタは草風呂のタイガとは離れてひとり休憩。人間も含めみんな、言葉にならない程かったるい

Kanta could not be bothered with us and sat down at a distance.  We were all feeling like zombies in this heat.

カンタの名前を呼ぶと、

When I called his name from behind, 

暑くて舌を出したまま振り向きました。

he turned his head around, with the tongue sticking out due to heat.
