夕方散歩 Evening Walk

 猛暑を象徴するかのようなサルスベリの花が近所の公園に咲いていました。

Crape myrtle flowers symbolise the height of summer - they always remind me of hot and humid days with ringing sounds of cicadas.

夕方散歩で城北公園へ。近くの小学校で5時半を知らせる音楽がなっていましたが、その時間でも暑いのなんの。

When we arrived at the park, there was music coming from the nearby elementary school, announcing the time 5:30 p.m.  It was still very hot.

石神井川と林に挟まれた道を歩くと涼しいことがあるので歩きましたが、

We walked the road sandwiched by the Shakujii River and woodland, since we often get cool breeze coming from either side of the road.

今日は全然効果なしでした。

No such relief today.

でも、公園でよく見かけるチワワと柴ミックスの仲良しの子に会えました。

However, we ran into a familiar face - a Chihuahua and Shiba Inu mix boy whom we often see during our walk.

尻尾の毛が柴らしからぬ長い毛足です。

The long hair on his tail is a giveaway - the tail is not Shiba-like.

公園上のほうの広場に到着。

We went up to the higher ground.

学校が休みのわりには子供たちの姿が少ないです。

Not many children in spite of the school holiday season

日陰は蚊がたくさんいるので、写真奥のほうの開けた場所のベンチを目指します。
As there were many mosquitoes in the shade, we headed for the bench in the open space, near the tree on the right.

ベンチで一休みしていたら、ゴールデンのテス君がやってきました。テス君は私が今まで見たゴールデンレトリーバーの中で最も大柄の個体です。タイガよりも１歳上の13歳。この大きさと年齢で、まだ歩いているのが素晴らしいです。飼い主さん夫婦がオーストラリア在住だったときからの子なので、オーストラリアの生まれ育ちです。

As I was resting on the bench, Tess, a male Golden Retriever, arrived.  He is the largest of the breed I have ever seen.  Tess is one year older than Taiga, at 13 years.  Considering his size and age, walking like this is remarkable.  His owners got him while they were living in Australia, so he was born and raised in Australia.

タイガを見て嬉しそうに近寄ってきました。

He came closer to Taiga with a smile.

タイガは臭い嗅ぎで挨拶。

テス君が草の上で横になったのを見て

When Taiga saw Tess lying down on the grass,

タイガもそばで腹ばいになりました。

she crouched beside him.

テス君が去ったあとも私がベンチから動けないでいると、初めて見る黒柴の子がやってきました。２歳のメリーちゃんだそうです。

After Tess leaving us, I still could not get up from the bench.  There came a new face, a 2-years old female Black Shiba Inu, named Merry.

いきなりタイガの臭い嗅ぎ。タイガは初対面のチワワにずかずかと臭い嗅ぎされても怒ることはないので、私は安心して見ていられます。メリーちゃんの足先に着目。

Merry immediately started sniffing Taiga.  Taiga never gets upset, even when a tiny Chihuahua takes a sniff at her on their first meeting, so I never have to worry about her reaction.  Merry's toes caught my eyes.

ツメも黒いですが、足の指のそれぞれに、まるで毛に色付けしたかのように黒い点があります。

Her nails were black, as is expected of a Black Shiba Inu.  What intrigued me was the black dots on her toes - they look as if someone painted the hair of each toe with black ink.

４本の足すべてがそうなっています。本当にユニーク。

All the toes of her 4 feet have those spots - so unique.

突然メリーちゃんが唸り始めました。

Suddenly, Merry started to growl.

黒柴の子が近づいてきたのですが、双子のようにそっくり。

A Black Shiba Inu was approaching us, but it looked like Merry's twin.

サクラちゃん、生後７か月だそうです。２歳のメリーちゃんと体格が同じ。

She is a 7-months old girl, named Sakura.  She looks as large as Merry who is 2 years old.

唸られた後なのにサクラちゃんがいきなり臭い嗅ぎするので、メリーちゃんが困惑。

Even though Merry had just growled at her, Sakura immediately started sniffing Merry.  Merry was left confused.

Although Sakura (left) is less than one year old, she looks more confident than Merry.

今度はふたりしてタイガを獲物にしているようです。

Now, they are both 'hunting' Taiga.

メリーちゃんはサクラちゃんと打ち解けるところまではいきませんでしたが、サクラちゃんの一家とは友好的でした。サクラママが差し出した手の匂い嗅ぎ。

Although Merry did not quite make friends with Sakura, she was friendly towards Sakura's family.  Merry gladly sniffed the hands extended by Sakura's mom.

サクラちゃんのお兄ちゃんとお姉ちゃんに撫でてもらって笑顔。

Merry also looked happy as she was being stroked by Sakura's brother and sister.

しまいには目がうっとり。

She ended up looking dreamy.

冬棗 ひと月後 Winter jujube one month on

6月28日に届いた冬ナツメの苗が、最近の猛暑でぐんぐん育ってきました。これが現在の姿。

The winter jujube plant that arrived on June 28th has been making a remarkable progress thanks to the recent heat wave.  This is how it looks as of today.

これは苗が到着したときの様子。恒常的な枝が１本も出ていないので、冬までに間に合うのか心配でした。

This is how it looked when the plant was delivered to me.  There was no permanent branch whatsoever, and I was worried if there would be one before coming winter.

猛暑のおかげで、過去2週間のうちに樹高が20cm超伸びました。

The heat wave has been the engine of growth, and the tree gained more than 20cm in height in the last two weeks.

これは第一節からの恒常的な枝。現在25cm近くになっています。その分、樹高が伸びたことになります。

This is the permanent branch coming out of the first node.  Currently it measures more than 20cm, which in turn means the tree has gained that much in height.

こちらは第三節からの恒常的な枝で、現在30cmほど。

This is another permanent branch, coming out of the third node, currently measuring about 30cm.

蕾つきの枝も出てきましたが、葉っぱが小さくて苗はまだ幼いので、今年の結実は期待しないでおきます。

There are some non-permanent branches with flower buds, but I am not expecting to see fruit setting this year, since the tree is still too young with tiny leaves.

今日は園芸やワンコとは無関係のことで時間をとられてしまいました。

VISAカードの８月引き落とし予定の通知に、全く覚えのないものが載っていました。

STEAM PURCHASE (SEATTLE) という会社からの請求で、７月４日と6日付けです。直ぐに三井住友カードへ連絡。その後、かかる業者はなんぞや、と思ってググると過去に同様の覚えのない請求で困った人達がいたようです。ネット情報によるとゲーム会社だそうですが、私はゲームは全くしないし、そもそも不正利用がないように、今ではスマホ利用料金のためのみにカードを持っている程度。ネット通販でカード使用は一切行っていません。

これとは別に、同じ７月に他にも不正請求があり、カードの再発行を受けました。それらの別件は処理できたようで、請求予定には入っていませんでした。

完全にムダな時間とエネルギーを費やしてしまいました。

夕方散歩など Evening Walk etc

 この前作ったガリが無くなったので、近江新生姜を買ってきました。お肉と野菜の炒め物など、料理に活用しています。

I am nearly running out of the ginger slices that I prepared a few weeks ago - I use them extensively in cooking.  So, I got more of the white ginger roots.  This is the cultivar used in sushi restaurants.

丁寧に皮をむいたら、

I peeled and cleaned them, 

キャベツスライサーで  一気にスライス。

then sliced them before cooking.

私のガリは単に米酢と砂糖だけで作ります。

I use only rice vinegar and sugar - the most basic recipe.

完成。お酢の溶液が少し余りましたが、これはハチミツと氷で冷たいジュースの素になります。

Done.  I was left with a small amount of the vinegar solution.  I diluted it to make a jug of cold drink with honey and ice cubes.

夕方散歩で城北中央公園へ。涼しい風が吹いていたので過ごしやすく、林を通って公園上のほうの広場を目指します。

We went to the Johoku Central Park for our evening walk.  There was a cool breeze coming from the river, and we walked through the woods to go to the field at the top of the hill.

上の広場に着くと、ちょうど仲良しの子たちが涼しんでいました。柴ミックスのスバル君が笑顔で迎えてくれます。

When we arrived at the field, we saw familiar faces already enjoying the evening air.  Subaru, a male Shiba mix, greeted us with a smile.

コンちゃんも笑顔ですが、

Kon, a male Shiba Inu, also met us with a smile, but

他のワンコたちが近寄り過ぎると、顔がこわばります。タイガの耳が写っていますが、これ以上はNG。

his face always stiffens when other dogs get too close to him.  In this photo, the tip of Taiga's ear can be seen, and this is the limit to how close any dog is allowed.

最近よく会うシュナウザーのジョン君もいました。

John, a male Schnauzer, whom we recently met, was also there.

公園から出ようとして歩いていたら、バーニーズマウンテンドッグのバーニーちゃんとばったり。バーニーちゃんは、この犬種にしては非常に小柄。色は遠くから見ると黒と白の2色に見えるので、大柄のボーダーコリーと間違えられることがあるそうです。

As we were on our way to leave the park, we ran into Berny, a female Bernese Mountain Dog.  She is quite small for a Bernese, and her coat is mostly in black and white.  So, from a distance, she is sometimes mistaken for a large Border Collie.

ちょうどそこへゴールデンのクリスちゃんも到着。クリスちゃんとタイガは生年月日が同じで幼馴染ですが、コロナを境にめったに会えなくなっていました。加齢で脚が弱くなって、週一で針に通っているそうです。今日のクリスちゃんはサマーカットで幼顔になっています。夏にコートを短く刈ることで、散歩時の荒い息が解消されたそうです。

There also arrived Chris, a female Golden Retriever.  Chris and Taiga share the same birthday and year.  Before the Covid scare, they had always been great friends.  After the Covid, her legs became frail due to age, and she has been getting acupuncture treatment once a week.  Today, Chris is sporting a summer cut and looks a lot younger.  Her mom says that having a short coat keeps her cool and prevents her from getting short breath.

コロナ以降、公園で一度会ったきりなので二人とも嬉しそうです。

I think we only met once after the Covid, and Chris and Taiga were very happy to see each other again.

バーニーちゃんとクリスちゃんは初対面。

For Berny and Chris, this was their first introduction.

タイガがバーニーママの差し出す水を飲み始めました。

Taiga started drinking water from the bucket offered by Berny mom.

するとバーニーちゃんが寄ってきて、

Immediately, Berny approached and

じぶんちのバケツで飲み始め。ワンコの嫉妬は面白いです。

started drinking out of the bucket which should be hers.  It is interesting to watch dogs playing jealous games.

バーニーパパがタイガを撫で始めると、

When Berny dad started cuddling Taiga,

バーニーママがハーネスを後ろから引っ張っても

Berny tried to join them in spite of being pulled from behind by her mom.

どうしてもパパに撫でてもらいたいようです。

She insisted on being cuddled by her dad.

満足？

タイガがクリスちゃんの気を引こうと接近しました。

Taiga tried to catch Chris's attention.

パイナップル挿し木の現在 Update on Pineapple Crown

 5月に「芯まで食べられるパイナップル」を美味しく頂いたあと、クラウンを挿しておきました。

In May, I bought a Taiwanese pineapple, famous for the soft and delicious core.  After eating it, I planted its crown in a pot.

２階バルコニーに置いてありますが、最近の猛暑でバルコニーは灼熱の砂漠のごとく暑いです。その中で、クラウン挿しは元気に育ち始めました。肥料は例の自家製液肥だけで実験しています。どうやら発根していそうなので、そろそろ配合有機肥料や骨粉も与えようと思っています。

I kept the pot on the upstairs balcony, where it becomes like a scorching desert in the summer.  In the recent heat wave, the crown started to grow quite visibly.  Since it was essentially a cutting, I did not put any start-up fertiliser, except occasionally using the home-made liquid fertiliser when watering.  Looking at the current state, perhaps I should start giving some organic fertiliser and bone meal.

想像していたよりも、葉っぱの幅が細い。花芽が出るまで３年くらいかかりそうなので、その間、観葉植物だと思って気長に世話します。

The leaves are narrow and delicate looking - a little different from what I had expected.  It may take about 3 years before flowering, so I am going to treat it like a foliage plant so as to keep my patience.

冷凍保存してあったナバホブラックベリーの残り半分を、今日ジャムにしました。最近の暑さで甘いものが欲しくなると、角氷と一緒にスムージーを作って飲んでいたら、あっという間に瓶が空になってしまったからです。味付けは、ジャムの他にハチミツと小さじ１杯の米酢です。

I used the remaining half of the Navaho blackberry that had been kept in the freezer, to make more jam.  In the recent heat wave, I have often wanted something sweet, and ice smoothy has become my favourite drink.  To make the ice smoothy, I use the blackberry jam, honey, and a teaspoon of rice vinegar.

日中は大変な猛暑でしたが、夕方散歩の時間には風が出てほんの少し過ごしやすかったです。四中横の草地では赤トンボが飛んでいました。

After another hot day, the temperature in the evening became tolerable with breeze.  In the field near the Kaishin No. 4 Junior High School, there were lots of red dragon flies in the air, which reminded me of autumn evenings.

道の向こうの四中（開進第四中学）は、夏休みなので静かです。普段は土日でもスポーツクラブの生徒たちが出入りしていますが。

The Junior High School was quiet, due to the summer holiday.  Normally, pupils belonging to sports clubs come and go even at weekends.

草地で一息ついたあとは、川向こうの城北中央公園へ移動することにしました。その前にオヤツ。近くの道を通りがかった人が背後から声をかけてきて、甲斐犬なのか聞かれました。今日で３人目です。最近、タイガと歩いていると「甲斐犬？」の質問をよくされるようになりました。この犬種の認知度が増してきているのでしょうか。

After resting in the field, we decided to go to the Johoku Central Park, across the river.  Before that, Taiga's treat.  A person passing by asked me from behind if Taiga was a Kaiken.  This was the 3rd such time today.  Recently, I often get asked the same question by strangers when walking with Taiga.  The Kai breed has been almost completely ignored in Japan, but is it now getting some recognition?

橋を渡って中央公園を歩いていたら、後ろから近所のジャーマンピンシャーのリアちゃんがやってきました。

When we crossed the river and started walking in the Johoku Central Park, Leah, our neighbour's German Pinscher, caught up with us.

最近知り合ったシュナウザーのジョン君と一緒です。

She was with John, the Schnauzer we met recently.

リアちゃんとジョン君はお揃いの保冷剤つきジャケットを着ています。リアちゃんの首回りを見て笑ってしまいました。金属製のものでジャラジャラに決めているので、獰猛なドーベルマンのような雰囲気です。

Leah and John are wearing the same jacket with cold pack.  Leah's collar and chain made me giggle.  They are made of shiny metal which made her look like a vicious Doberman Pinscher.

テニスコート横の草地で、川風に当たりながらくつろぎました。夕日は丘の向こう、ここは日陰になるので、ハンモックがあったら即 眠りたいくらい。

We rested in the field next to the tennis courts, where there was a cool breeze coming from the river.  The sun was on the other side of the hill and this field was in the shade.  It was so comfortable that, if I had a hammock, I would have happily gone to sleep there and then.
