 城北公園の林を歩いていたら、懐かしい顔に会えました。

As we were walking through the woodland in the Johoku Park, we saw familiar faces.

同じ３丁目に住んでいるゴールデンのユメちゃんとチワワのリンタロウ君です。散歩の時間帯が合わないので、めったに会えません。でも、散歩からの帰り道にタイガがユメ・リンタロウの家の前を通りたがるので、その際、タイガと私の気配を察知してウメが吠えだします。そうするとリンタロウも参加して、お互い競争するように騒ぎ出すことがあります。なので、ご近所迷惑にならないよう、密やかに通り過ぎるようにしています。

Yume, a female Golden Retriever, and Rintaro, a male Chihuahua, who live in our neighbourhood.  We rarely meet each other, since we walk at different hours.  However, Taiga likes passing by their house on our way home from walks and, at that time, Yume often detects our footsteps and starts barking.  It triggers Rintaro's barking, and they seem to compete with each other.  Since I fear the inconvenience caused to their neighbours, I try each time to walk as if stepping on eggshells.

今朝も蒸し暑かったので、木陰で休んでから帰りました。

It was another muggy morning, so we rested in shade before going home.

帰宅したら、私が庭の植物を見回っている間タイガは玄関前でぐったり。

After getting home, I started checking on my plants while Taiga was flat out in front of the porch.

嬉しい発見。去年買ったノコンギクの「桃山」が季節外れにもう咲いていました。本来なら10-11月に咲く花です。去年は、植えた後  夏の暑さで全滅したように見えて、本当に落胆していました。でも、冬の間に根系が広がっていたらしく、今年の春になってあちこちから出てきました。桃山を扱うネット通販の業者は以前２軒あったのが、いずれも数年前から取り扱いを止めたので、去年 偶然にメルカリで見かけたときは飛びつきました。しかも、出品されたのはその一度だけだったので、本当にラッキーでした。

I made a nice discovery - a few out-of-season flowers of Japanese wild aster called 'Momoyama' that I got last year.  Normally, they come into season during October-November.  Last year, I felt so sad when the plants seemed to have melted away in the extreme summer heat.  However, the root system was alive, and it expanded a lot during the winter.  So, in spring, they came out in many unexpected places.  This variety is no longer available from shops, and I had been trying for several years to find it.  When I saw an offer on an auction site last year, I jumped at it.  Moreover, that was the only time the seller put it out - I feel so lucky.

これがその花。桃山には「桃仙」には無い美しさがあると個人的に思っています。

Japanese wild asters are normally blueish purple, but this Momoyama variety has delicate pink flowers.

春になって、このように勢いよく地上部が出てきました。左のサークル内は大実柚子の根元で、右のは種無しカボスの根元。

In spring this year, I was pleasantly surprised to see how much the root system had expanded.  The circle on the left is at the foot of Yuzu, and the one on the right is near the Seedless Kabosu.

これは種無しスダチの根元の桃山。あまりにも増えたので、一部は鉢上げして拡散させているほどです（左の茶色い鉢もその一つ）。

This is at the foot of Seeless Sudachi.  It had multiplied so much that I had to replant some of it in pots (including the brown pot on the left), in order to accommodate them in other places.

家の前の道をとおりかかった人が、ブラックベリーの幼果が見事なので声をかけてきました。玄関前でのびていたタイガが、自分も話題にしてもらおうと出てきました。

A passer-by started talking to me, admiring the state of young fruits of Novaho blackberries.  Taiga, who had been lying prostrate got up and joined us, hoping to become the subject of discussion.

ブラックベリーのナバホです。花が全部終わって、あとは色づくのを待つだけ。これだけ実が多いと収穫期も長めになります。ポリフェノール、ビタミンＣ、食物繊維などが豊富らしいので、毎年ありがたく消費しています。

My Navaho blackberries with countless young fruits.  All the blossoms are gone and now waiting for the fruits to ripen.  With all these fruits, the harvest period has become much longer than several years ago.

こちらはルビービューティ。冬の間、玄関横の種無しスダチの根元に植わっていたときは、何度もタイガに掘り起こされたり噛み千切られたりしていたので、タイガが入り込めない場所に避難させました。大きな鉢植え植物でブロックしています。元は2株あったので、これから少なくともそのレベルまで回復させたいです。

This is Ruby Beauty.  During winter, this was planted at the foot of the Seedless Sudachi.  The plant was subjected to uprooting and biting by Taiga repeatedly.  So, I replanted it in a spot where Taiga could not get at - it is surrounded by large pots of plants.  When I bought this plant a few years ago, there were two pots, so my aim is to at least recover the initial level.

パン・ジャムなど Bread, jam, etc

今日は朝から青空のもと、暑い散歩をしました。城北公園に向かう石神井川沿いの植樹帯には、先日見かけたヒルガオが一段とハデに咲いていました。先日の花より更に大きいです。ここまで大きいと、綺麗なのか不気味なのか分からなくなります。

Today, it was all blue sky from the start, and we had a morning walk in the humid air.  On our way to the Johoku Park, I saw new flowers on the bindweed which I saw the other day.  The flower this time was even larger than the previous one.  I am not sure whether I find this pretty or a bit scary with its size.

今のところ、こうやって手すりに儚げに絡まって生きています。

The vine does not look too vigorous at the moment.

真正面のどぎつい印象はさておいて、横から見ると結構カワイイ。種が熟したら採取するかも。来年の今頃、鉢植えでうちの庭に咲いていたら、このツルの子孫です。

Forgetting how the flower looks from the front, the view from the side is quite pretty and delicate looking.  I might come back when the seeds are mature.  If you see bindweed flowers growing in a pot in my garden next year, it will be an offspring of this plant.

あまりに暑いので、珍しくタイガが早めに散歩を切り上げようとしました。帰る前に木陰で休憩とオヤツ。

It was so hot that even Taiga wanted to finish the walk early.  However, before heading home, we rested in the shade for Taiga's treat.

暑くても、外に出るとゴキゲンな顔になります。

Her face lights up when she is outside, even if the heat is too much.

昨日作ったブルーベリーのジャムと一緒に食べようと、食パンの生地を準備しました。出来上がったジャムはひと晩放置してからが美味しいと思います。

I wanted to check the blueberry jam that I made yesterday, so I prepared bread dough for baking.  I prefer to leave the newly made jam overnight before eating.

この暑さで生地があっという間に発酵します。この状態から、

The dough rises in no time due to the hot and humid weather.

この状態へ。

It has risen enough.

水溶き卵を塗ったら黒ゴマをまぶします。

Egg wash and black sesame seeds to garnish.

200度のオーブンで30分焼くと、

Bake at 200℃ for 30 minutes.

出来上がり。

Done.

生地を焼き型に入れたときの大きさからは３倍ちかくに膨らんでいます。

It looks nearly 3 times the size of the original dough after shaping.

パンが完全に冷めるまでスライスできません。その間、昨日のジャムをチェック。

I have to wait for the bread to cool down completely - takes time in this warm weather.  In the meantime, I want to check the jam from yesterday.

ゼリーっぽい食感を味わいたくて少量の水とナチュラルペクチンも使ったので、期待通りの質感になりました。ジャム瓶の中身をスプーンですくうと、後が残ります。

I added a little water and natural pectin when cooking the blueberries, so as to achieve jelly-like texture.  It worked.  When I scooped some content out of the jar, the shape remained showing the missing part.

The jam on the plate does not hold the shape, but 

スプーンにとって斜めに傾けてもすぐには落ちない程度の粘りがあります。あとは夕飯までにパンが冷めるのを待つだけ。

when I put some on a spoon, it does not fall off immediately.  Anyway, I have to wait for the bread to cool down by supper.

公園で At the Park

 雨が止んで今朝は良い天気。青空がきれいで、そのかわり暑かった。公園に着くと向こうから甲斐犬のヒナとセナがやって来ました。ちょっと久しぶり。

The rain stopped during the night, and we had a beautiful blue sky this morning.  However, it was very hot.  When we arrived at the park, we saw our Kaiken friends, Hina and Sena.

ヒナはタイガ目がけて走ってきました。タイガが４歳の頃にヒナがホヤホヤの子犬として公園デビューして以来ずっと仲良し。

Hina came rushing towards Taiga.  She started coming to the park as a puppy, when Taiga was about 4 years old.  Since then, they have been good friends.

セナは、「別に、子供の頃タイガに遊んでもらったわけじゃないし」と言わんばかりに無関心です。

Sena is a few years younger than Hina and she always behaves in a way suggesting "Well, it isn't as if Taiga played with me when I was a puppy".

おまけに、挨拶よりもオシッコ。

She even relieves herself rather than come to say 'hello' to Taiga.

その後、橋を渡って城北中央公園に入ると、入口広場のアジサイが咲き始めていました。

Afterwards, we crossed the river and entered the Johoku Central Park.  In the field near the entrance, there were hydrangeas with flowers just starting.

The deep blue colour gives it a cool look.

「窪地」と呼ばれている広場に上がると、いかにも「夏」の空気でした。写真では清々しそうな風景ですが、

We walked through the woods and went up to the opening, where the atmosphere was really summer-like.  The scenery may look refreshing in the photo, 

実際は湿度が高くて、まとわりつくような暑さです。タイガの顔は赤茶色なので、見かけが焦げ付きそうな外観。

but it was in fact stifling.  Taiga's face looks burning, due to the colour of her fur.

帰りは桜の木陰伝いに歩くことにしました。この草地のソメイヨシノに交じって１本だけ正体不明の、サクランボが生る木。今朝はおびただしい数の野鳥が集まっていて、大騒ぎでした。

We decided to pick our way home by staying in the shade of cherry trees.  In this field, there is one tree that is not the flowering Somei-Yoshino variety, but it actually produces tiny cherries.  This morning, there were countless wild birds making huge noises among its branches.

あ、もう殆どなくなっています。真っ黒に熟したものは見当たらないということは、色づくとかたっぱしから野鳥が食べているのでしょう。鳥たちにとって何とも有難い木です。
The branches were already almost empty.  Birds must be picking the cherries even before they become ripe and black.

野鳥の食事の邪魔にならないよう、他の桜の木の下で休んでから帰りました。

We moved away to rest under another tree, so that we would not disturb the birds.

パンとジャムはいつも手作りのを食べています。今日は冷凍ブルーベリー400gを使ってジャムを作りました。砂糖は70%。少しゼリーっぽい食感にしたかったので、水とペクチンも入れました。グツグツ煮て水分を飛ばしている間、横の鍋で空き瓶を熱湯消毒。

I always eat home-made jam and bread.  This afternoon, I made blueberry jam with 400g of frozen berries.  I used 70% sugar, and a small amount of water and natural pectin, in order to give it a jelly-like texture.  When the jam was almost done, I disinfected a jar in a pot of boiling water.

仕上がったジャムを瓶に注いだら、少し足りない。

I poured the hot jam into the jar, but it was a little short of the full amount.

ブルーベリーはカナダ産。冷凍ものながら、香りがあってとても美味しいです。冷蔵庫でゆっくり解凍すると、ちゃんと歯ごたえもあるので、自家製ヨーグルトに入れています。ブドウと違って、ブルーベリーは犬に与えても問題ないそうですが、解凍したものをタイガに見せてもソッポを向くので、私が独り占めで食べています。

These are Canadian blueberries that I always keep.  Although frozen, the berries have a nice flavour.  When they defrost in the fridge, they still have a firm texture and good enough to be eaten on their own.  They say that blueberries are harmless to dogs, unlike grapes.  However, Taiga shows no interest in them, so I keep them to myself.

今日も雨 Rain again

 昨日時点では、今日は午前は曇りで午後から雨と聞いていたのに、今朝６時に目が覚めたときには既にザザ降りでした。ワンコの散歩には不便ですが、この恵みの雨は庭の植物を育ててくれます。

去年の夏に買った日本種ナツメは、秋には３本のひこばえが出ていました。それらを冬の前に鉢上げしておいたら、今すくすくと育っています。右から大きい順に並べてありますが、支柱の高さはほぼ同じなので、成長を判断するのに便利です。ＡとＢについては、主幹が支柱の先端に届いたところで摘心しましたが、その後も伸び続けています。Ｃは支柱の先端に届いたばかりなので、切り戻しはこれから。

As of yesterday, they were forecasting that it would be cloudy during the morning today, followed by rain from afternoon onwards.  However, when I woke up at 6 a.m., it was already raining hard.  Although it is inconvenient for dog walks, this warm rain nurtures my plants.

The large Japanese jujube plant that I bought last summer had 3 suckers by autumn.  I repotted them before winter, and they are now doing well.  The plants A to C below are placed in the order of the biggest to the smallest.  The supporting sticks are of nearly same height, so that I can tell the growth.  With A and B, they were trimmed at the top when they reached the tip of the prop - they continue to grow still.  C has just reached the end of the prop.

この苗は、ひこばえを掘り出したとき根っこが殆ど着いていない状態でしたが、冬の間に根を張ったようです。でも、今もしんがり。

When I dug out this plant last autumn, there was hardly any root attached to it.  It must have grown during the winter.  Nevertheless, this remains the 'runt'.

ＢとＣにも蕾が少し出ています。

Plants B and C also have a few flower buds.

これ↓がその親苗。去年の真夏に苗が届いたときは根鉢を崩さずに鉢増ししただけだったので、今年の冬の間に根の状態をチェックしました。根っこが粘土のような塊を抱え込んでいたので、根を徹底的に洗い、根が鉢に収まり易いようにトリミングして、新たな土で植え直しました。従って、今年は本調子とは言えません。

This is the parent tree.  It arrived in the middle of the summer last year, so I simply repotted it in a larger container without disturbing the root system.  I pulled it out in winter to check the state of the roots.  The roots were embracing a large lump of clay soil.  I removed it and washed the roots thoroughly and trimmed them for repotting with completely new soil.  The plant is still recovering from the shock treatment.

でも、少しは収穫できるでしょう。

Still, there might be some fruits in autumn.

雨でトイレ散歩も短めに切り上げるので、退屈そうなタイガ。

Due to the rain, Taiga's walks are cut short as soon as her business is done - she is absolutely bored.
