コーネリアンチェリーなど Cornelian cherry etc

 コーネリアンチェリーのパイオニア苗が５月１日に届いてから一月たちました。最近まで変化が無かったのが、やっと枝先が伸び始めました。

It has been one month since Cornus mas 'Pioneer' arrived on 1st May this year.  Since then, there was no growth until a few days ago, but now I can see some new buds.

ほんの２センチほどですが、生きているのを確認できたので嬉しいです。根っこが定着し始めているようです。

They are only a few centimeters long, but at least I can rest assured that the plant wants to live.  Probably, the root system is just getting established.

それにしても、葉っぱの色の違いが気になります。パイオニアの葉は苗が到着したときの色よりも濃くなって、今は黒味を帯びた緑色なのに対し、カザンラク↓は薄い緑です。同じ肥料を与えているのにこの違いが出るのは不思議。過去のカザンラクの写真を見ると、真夏のバルコニーで枯死しそうになる以前は濃い緑色だったので、今は根っこが痛んでいるのかもしれません。今度の落葉期に鉢から出して根の状態を確認するとともに、土を入れ替える予定です。

One thing that does bother me is the difference in the colour of leaves.  The colour of Pioneer's leaves became darker since its arrival.  In contrast, Kazanlak's leaves are looking pale.  They get the same fertiliser.  On checking how Kazanlak looked in the past, I find that the leaves were dark green until it nearly died on the south-facing balcony where it got extremely hot and dry in the summer.  Perhaps the roots have not recovered fully.  I am going to check the roots in the forthcoming winter, and renew the soil, too.

今年の春に長く伸びた枝を５月に切り詰めました。その後、新芽が出始めているので成長する力はあるようです。

The branches grew vigorously in spring this year, and I pruned them last month.  I found a few new growths recently, which indicates that the plant wants to live.

今日は一日曇りで過ごしやすかったです。夕方散歩で通った草地の立派なトネリコの近くで座り込みました。

It was cloudy and cool today.  In the field we passed through during our evening walk, we sat down near a big ash tree to enjoy the pleasant air.

涼しい風が吹いて、タイガは満足そうな顔。

心地良すぎて、いつものスリゴロが始まりました。

She was getting too comfortable and started the usual rolling.

ガバっと起きて、散歩を続けます。

Suddenly, she got up, and we resumed our walk.

久しぶりに会った懐かしい顔。小型白柴のミルクちゃんです。

We met a familiar face that we had not seen for some time.  A female, small White Shiba Inu, named "Milk".

今年８歳だそうで、１２歳のタイガとは４歳違いです。この子が公園デビューした当時はベビーカーに乗せられた赤ちゃんと一緒に散歩していました。最初はその子が弟だったのに、今は小学校６年生のお兄ちゃんになって、立場が逆転しています。

Milk will be 8 years old this year, 4 years younger than Taiga.  When she started coming to the park as a puppy, her mom was pushing a little boy in a cart.  The boy was then Milk's kid brother, but now aged 11, he is in his final year of elementary school and protects her as a big brother.

「日本昔話」にでも出て来そうな、独特の雰囲気をもった美人です。

She has a mysterious air about her.  In a children's story, she might be a beautiful young woman who was turned into a dog by a witch.

タイガは誰に匂いを嗅がれても平気なので、ミルクちゃんも臭いチェック。

Taiga allows anyone to take a sniff at her, so Milk started checking her scent.

公園で At the Park

昨日までの雨が朝には止んで、今朝は清々しい散歩を楽しみました。四中横の草地では色々な木が花盛りで、匂いがどの木からのか分からないほど混ざっていました。

After all that rain over the last few days, we had a clear blue sky this morning and the walk was very pleasant.  In the field next to a junior high school, many different trees were in full bloom, and it was difficult to tell which scent was coming from which tree.

この草地までは日向を歩いて来たので、大きな木の根っこに腰かけてほっと一息。風が冷たいので木陰は本当に涼しいです。

We walked in the sun to reach this field, so it was such a relief to sit down on the exposed root of an ancient tree to enjoy the shade.

そのあと石神井川向こうの城北中央公園に入りました。一通り歩いて回ったあと公園出口近くの林に戻り、日向の道を歩いて帰宅する前の休憩。木陰にちょうど良い切り株があったので、また腰かけました。タイガにポーズをとらせようとしたら、ヨダレが。。。　もうオヤツのことを想像しているようです。

Later, we crossed the bridge to enter the Johoku Central Park.  After walking through the park, we returned to the woodland near the exit.  We wanted to have a rest in the shade before embarking on our return walk.  I sat down on an old tree trunk.  When I asked Taiga to pose for the camera, a string of saliva was dangling out of her mouth.  Was she already thinking of a treat?

セントバーナード犬ほどではないけど、タイガのヨダレは豊富です。

Taiga has abundant saliva, although not as much as the St. Bernard dog.

上２枚の写真では見えにくいですが、長く垂れ下がったヨダレの下半分が切れて落ちる瞬間、 風に乗ってリードに付着しました。

In the above two photos, you cannot see the state of her saliva clearly.  The long string broke in half, and the bottom half was carried by wind to stick to the leash.

私がオエッとなっても、本人はすましています。

I was disgusted, but she was nonchalant.

タイガは自分から物をはっきりと要求してこない犬です。それが、今朝は腰かけている私の背中に回り込んで、私がオヤツを取り出すのを脇から見張っていました。まるで洋犬のような自己主張に笑いたいのを我慢して、躾けのために一応叱りましたが、私の背中にくっついたままです。タイガがこんなに接近してくるのは生まれて初めてです（最後に甘えるとか、何かの予兆では、と不安になったほど）。

Taiga has never been pushy when she wants something.  However, she was different this morning.  As I was getting her treat out of my bag, she stuck herself to my back and watched my hands.  I have never seen her behave like a Western dog with strong demands.  I wanted to chuckle but tried to stay calm, since I had to remind her to behave.  Nevertheless, she was glued to my back.  I have never seen her behaving like this (I even got worried that she was playing a baby having sensed the end of her life....  That's what my budgie did in his final hours, and the memory upsets me even now),

オヤツをゲットして満足そう。あまりにも珍しいハプニングなので、持ち合わせのオヤツの全てをあげました。

帰りに通った草地の出口では遅咲きのシナノキ（科の木）が満開でした。中央公園入口広場の木は終わったし、ドッグランのはそろそろ終わりに近づいているので、ここの数本は遅いめの開花です。

In the field that we passed on our way home, Japanese linden trees were in full bloom.  Those Japanese lindens in other parts of the Johoku Park have either finished flowering or very close to it, so the trees in this field are late bloomers.  

天国にいるような何とも良い香り。ずっと嗅いでいたいです。

What a heavenly perfume!  I would love to stay her for hours.

ナツメ Jujube trees

 月末恒例のナツメ成長記録です。今日も雨でしたが、ほんの一時止んだので急いで写真を撮りました。手前から、品種不明の新入り、無核金絲、蟠棗、早脆王、皇帝（下半分しか写っていない）。

This is the month end recording of jujube trees' progress.  It rained today again, but I managed to take photos when it stopped raining for about 10 minutes.  Starting with the nearest tree in the photo, the unknown cultivar that I bought on 23rd May, Seedless Gold Thread, Early Crisp King, Emperor (only the bottom half in the picture).

5月23日に渋谷園芸で購入した品種不明の新入り。以前の小さすぎる鉢から鉢増しされて肥料ももらえているので、全体的にとても元気そうになりました。葉色が薄かったのも、だんだんと濃い緑色になってきました。

The unknown cultivar, that I bought on 23rd May:  After replanting the tree in a much larger pot, and with fertiliser, the plant is looking increasingly robust.  The colour of the leaves used to be paler, but now it is turning into darker green.

この苗の葉っぱに特徴があり、葉の両側が波打っています。また、葉の先端もかなり鋭く尖っている。

The shape of this tree's leaves is unique in that the edges are wavy.  Also, the tip of the leaf is very pointed.

買ったときに既に出ていた蕾がぽちぽち開き始めています。

The plant already had flower buds when I bought it and a few of them are now flowering.

昨日気づいたのはこれ↓。緑色の枝の後ろにあるコブがほころび始めて、そのうち芽吹きそうです。

I noticed this change yesterday - the node behind the green branch is starting to move.  I think it will be budding soon.

こちらは無核金絲棗。４月末からほとんど変化が見られず一時は枯れるのかと思ったくらいでしたが、ここ10日間ほどで急に成長を再開しました。枝ぶりは蟠棗に追いついて、葉っぱの拡大はこちらの方が上なので、蟠棗よりも充実した外観です。

Seedless Gold Thread Jujube:  It hardly grew since the end of April, and I was worried that the plant might die.  However, in the last 10 days, it started to change rapidly.  The growth of branches has almost caught up with Panzao.  With this tree, the leaves are actually getting larger, unlike Pnazao.  As a result, this tree looks fuller than Panzao.

蕾もちらほら開き始めています。

A few flower buds are starting to open.

蟠棗は、なかなか葉っぱの拡大がみられません。そのため無核よりも貧相に見えますが、新梢が出ているので育つ意欲はあるようです。
Panzao: The leaves remain so tiny, and this plant looks almost unhealthy.  However, new branches are growing, so it wants to live.

蟠棗が梨棗の枝替わりというなら、もっと大きな葉っぱになるはず。

If this cultivar is a bud mutation of Li jujube, then the leaves should be much larger.

早脆王。勢いよく伸びた２本の枝が主幹にぴったり沿って垂直になったままだったので、支柱で引き離しました。これで、将来枝が分岐して増えても風通しが確保されます。

Early Crisp King: The two branches that shot up in spring remained almost stuck to the tree trunk.  I pulled them apart and tied to props, in order to make it airy when these branches become fuller in the future.

皇帝。順調に育っています。３本の枝のうち２本は目標の高さになりました。あとの１本も追いついてきたら、全部同じ高さで揃える予定。去年の状態と比べて大きく成長しました。

Emperor:  This tree is doing well.  Of the 3 branches, two of them have reached their target.  When the last one grows, all 3 of them will be kept at the same height.

最近 次々と花が咲いていますが、この涼しい時期にはムダ花になるだけです。７-８月の本格的な暑さの中で開花したものが着果につながります。

There have been a lot of flowers opening recently, but in this cool weather, none of them will set.  For fruit setting, we need the high temperature of July-August.
