日本ナツメ Another Jujube tree

 日本ナツメの実もそろそろ色づいてきました。一言に「日本種」と言ってもバリエーションはいくつかあるようで、数年前に地元JAで買ったトゲトゲの日本種の実と、今年の８月に買った苗の実とでは、葉や実の形が随分違います。共通点は、実が小さいこと。これは仕方ないです。幸いこの苗はトゲ無しなので世話がしやすい。この写真の実は、苗が届いてから開花した花の実。今年はこの小さい状態で終わりそうです。間引きと試食のために小さい実を毎日ポリポリ食べていますが、酸っぱくてジューシーで美味しい。酸味と果汁は、ナツメにとって稀で貴重な要素です。

The fruits of the Japanese jujube tree is ripening.  There are several types of common Japanese jujube trees.  The tree I bought several years ago was very thorny and the shapes of leaves and fruits were quite different from those of this tree which I bought in August this year.  The commonality is that the fruits are small.  This new tree is thorn free which makes it easy to look after this plant.  

The fruits in this photo are from the flowers that came after the plant was delivered to me.  Due to the short time in which they had to grow, it seems that this is all they can do for this year.  I have been tasting these tiny ones for the purpose of thinning, but they tasted so juicy and beautiful with definite sourness.  To me, juiciness and sourness in jujubes are rare and precious factors.

以下の４個は苗が届いた時点で開花していた花からの実。これくらいの色づきが果汁たっぷりです。

These 4 fruits are from the flowers in bloom at the time of plant delivery.  At this stage, the fruits are ripe.

色づきの度合いで糖度がどう違うか実験です。まずは右端の最も色づた実から糖度計を当てていきます。

I wanted to see if getting brown had correlation with sweetness.  I started measuring the sugar content with the one on the extreme right.

ほんとかいな、と思うくらいの高糖度です（あくまでも糖度計によるとですが）。しかも色づき具合はあまり糖度に重要ではなさそう。青い実を試食していたときは甘味を感じていたけど、それはしっかりした酸味のおかげで甘味を感じているだけだろうと思っていましたが、実際に糖度も高いようです。

They all show incredibly high sugar content (assuming that my gadget is working all right).  Interestingly, the degree of colouring seems irrelevant to the sugar content.  While I was eating the young fruits, they tasted sweet but I kept thinking that it was due to the relatively strong acidity that enhanced the sweetness.  I now know that this common jujube variety can produce very tasty fruits.

公園で At the Park

 台風のあいだはタイガの体臭が気になっても洗えませんでした。今日の良い天気と強い日差しがあるうちにと、私の重い腰を上げてシャンプーしました。その後は自然乾燥の旅で公園へ。

During the recent typhoon days, I could not shampoo Taiga even though she was beginning to smell.  Now that we have a dry spell, I decided to wash her in the early afternoon.  After that, we headed for the Park for natural drying.

毛がまだぬれていてヨレヨレでも、しっかりツヤはあります。年をとって脚が震えるようになっても、毛ヅヤは以前と変わりません。

Her matted fur is still wet but the sheen is there.  She may be old with slightly wobbly hind legs, but she still has that shiny fur.

ここ数日　天気の良い日が続いたせいか、公園のソメイヨシノに狂い咲きの枝がありました。

Probably due to the warm weather we had these last few days, I saw some cherry blossom branches with unseasonable flowering.

日向を1時間近く歩いたのでだいぶ乾いてきました。帰宅してドライヤーで仕上げです。

We walked in the sun for almost an hour and Taiga was getting fairly dry.  So, we headed home in order to finish her coat with a hair dryer.

公園で At the Park

今朝の散歩中に何年も会っていなかったバーニーズの子に会えました。コロナよりも以前に会ったきりのような。８歳の女の子で、名前はバーニーちゃん。

During our morning walk, we met an old friend whom we had not seen for years - probably since pre-Covid days.  She is a Bernese Mountain Dog, named Bernie, 8 years old.

お互い段々と記憶が戻ってきたようです。

They seemed to recognise each other gradually.

名前を呼ぶと、しっかりカメラ目線になってくれました。

When I called her name, she looked directly towards the camera.

私の横に来てスリスリし始めたので、座り込んで記念写真。すっかり打ち解けて良い雰囲気です。バーニーちゃんのポーズがいかにも大型犬という感じで美しい。

She came to my side and started snuggling up to me, so we decided to take pictures.  Bernie was totally relaxed and her sitting posture looked so graceful as a large dog.

そこへタイガが参加。

There came Taiga, looking like a third wheel.

タイガ11歳、バーニーちゃん８歳。今度いつ一緒の写真に入れるか分かりません。それにしてもタイガの顔、ブサっぽい。

Taiga is 11 years old, while Bernie is 8.  Since I do not know when there will be another opportunity like this with Bernie and Taiga together in a picture, it means a lot to me.  

まあ、いい。うちの子はこれくらいがちょうど。

帰宅してリビングで寝そべるタイガ。秋のおだやかな朝を満喫。

Back home, Taiga enjoyed a nap in the living room.  Such a peaceful autumn morning.

午後の公園 Afternoon Walk in the Park

 今日は清々しい天気だったので、追加の散歩で午後の3時半頃に公園へ向かいました。つい最近までの蒸し暑かった気候が嘘のようです。

It was a dry and cool day today, which is typical of our autumn weather.  Hopefully, we will not have any more typhoons visiting us.  To take advantage of the day, we went out for an extra walk at around 3:30 p.m.

彼岸を過ぎると急速に日が短くなるので、もう夕方のような日差しです。

After the autumnal equinox, daylight hours are getting progressively shorter, and it was already looking like close to sunset.

その夕日のような明かりのなかで、久しぶりに柴犬のミオウ（美桜）ちゃんに会えました。

In that weakening light, we met Miou, a female Shiba Inu we have known since she was just a tiny puppy.

ミオウちゃんは４歳になったそうですが、すっかり落ち着いて、子犬の頃の面影が全く見えません。

She is already 4 years old and there is no hint of a bouncy puppy.

タイガはつれないそぶり。

元々は豆柴っぽい子でしたが、今では小ぶりの普通の柴です。以前聞いた話では、「豆柴」の子犬を迎えても、きちんと食事制限をしないとどんどん大きくなって、普通柴に近づくことがよくあるそうです。ミオウちゃんはぽっちゃり体形なので、美味しいものをたらふく食べて育ったように見えます。

As a puppy, she seemed to belong to the 'miniature' Shiba Inu category.  However, her dad has been over-generous with tasty food and she has grown into a near-normal size.  I hear that you have to be very strict with the feeding habit if you want to keep the miniature status.

その後、中央公園を突き抜けて板橋区側へ出ました。途中のケヤキやイチョウの木の林は人影が少なく、若い女性がそれぞれのベンチで読書をしている程度で、水彩画のような風景です。

We then walked through the woodland to reach the other side of the park.  With very few people around, except two young women reading a book sitting on their respective bench, the scenery looked like a water-colour painting.

林を出ると石神井川。タイガにポーズをとらせていたら、ご近所のリアちゃんママの姿がレールの向こうに見えました。

We came out of the woodland and stopped on the bridge to take a picture of Taiga, when I spotted our neighbour.

引き返してリアちゃんを待ち受け。

It is Leah, the German Pinscher girl and her mom.

タイガはリアちゃんと会えて興奮しているのではないようで、

Taiga is excited not because she met Leah, but she was expecting a treat from Leah's mom.

いつものようにリアちゃんがズカズカと臭い嗅ぎに来ても無視しながら、

Taiga took no notice of Leah sniffing at her back,

ひたすらリアママにオヤツを催促。

just concentrating on the forthcoming treat.

リアちゃんはタイガより先にオヤツをもらおうと必死。

Leah shows off her proprietary right over Taiga, but they both got what they expected in the end.

リアちゃんは再度、耳たぶの補正中のようです。こうやって見ると、ジャーマンピンチャーというよりは、普通にドーベルマンピンシャーに見えます。

Leah is having her ear flaps fixed again.  With the ears propped up, she looks like an American Doberman Pinscher.

リアちゃんたちと別れたあと、帰宅途中で会ったレオ君、４歳。一見柴犬ですが、チワワの血も混じっているそうで、言われてみると目のあたりがチワワです。

After saying good-bye to Leah, we headed home, when we met Leo, a 4 years old Shiba Inu-Chihuahua mix.  Since the owner tells me that Leo is part Chihuahua, his eyes look a bit bulging.

たまにしか出くわさないけど、なぜかタイガはレオ君と相性が良いので、ふたりは道の上でも追いかけっこしようとします。

We rarely meet but Taiga for some reason likes Leo.  So, they always play and chase each other even on the road.
