レモンなど Lemon etc

明日からは日中の最高気温が20℃以上に上るそうなので、室内越冬していた柑橘類を今日からバルコニーに出しました。

リスボンレモンは今も開花が続いていて、幼果が増えてきました。

According to the forecast, the maximum temperature will exceed 20℃ from tomorrow, so I have brought out the citrus trees to the balcony.  The Lisbon lemon plant has not finished flowering but small fruits are forming already.

栄養節約のために不完全花は全部取り除いてあります。

To save the plant's energy, I have removed all the flowers lacking the pistil.

室内においていた間は、花の香で天国にいる気分でした。

The perfume from the flowers was out of this world while I had this plant in my bedroom.

おととしの６月上旬に苗が来て、今年はもう初収穫にこぎつけそうです。

In less than 2 years, this plant has grown well and I am hoping to see some fruits setting this year for the first time.

フィンガーライムは、現在３本だけ残っています。これはミアローズで、かなり大きくなりました。15ミリ以上のトゲを見つけ次第、根気よく切ってきましたが、それでも痛いものは痛いです。

Of the several finger lime plants I used to have, only 3 are left.  This is Mia Rose.  As the plant grew, I have been removing all the thorns longer than 15 mm, but I continue to get painful stings when I take care of the plant.

今まで花が咲いたのを見たことありませんでしたが、いつの間にか１個だけ実が着いていました。ミアローズはピンクアイスの選抜種とされていて、ピンクアイスより大実で粒ぞろい、また中身の粒の色はより濃いピンクだそうです。

I have never seen this plant flowering but, recently, I noticed this young fruit.  Mia Rose is thought to be a selection of Pink Ice, with larger fruits, darker flesh, and uniform fruit size.

庭に置いてある鉢植えスモモのハニーハートの開花が始まりました。ここ数日の雨で花粉が流れたかも。さらに、今日の夕方からまた降り出したので、どれだけ受粉できるやら。

The potted plum tree has started to bloom.  This is a red-flesh variety called 'Honey Heart' with little tartness.  We have had several days of continuous rain, and it started to rain this evening yet again.  So, I am not sure how much pollination took place.

タイガは地べたでリラックス。ワンコにとって今日の気温は暑すぎるのか、座布団は無視で冷たい地面を好んでいます。なぜか、菊の植え込みに前足を突っ込んでいます。

Taiga sitting on the ground, instead of the cushion I place for her outside the porch door.  It was a little warm during the day and she was enjoying the cool of the soil.  I wish she would leave my chrysanthemums alone though.

ナツメ苗 Jujube plants

２月下旬に注文してあったナツメ苗が届きました。「蟠棗」と「七月早脆王」です。

土を振るい落としてみると、この状態。お店のサイトでは

　　「お届け状態：１年生根巻苗」

となっていますが、表示とはかなり違います。

通常、右側の「蟠棗」の根っこの状態を見ても十分ショックを受けるところですが、左側の「七月早脆王」の苗との相対比較に影響されてか、左の根っこにばかり目が行きます。

さっと水ですすいで土を落としてみました。

「七月早脆王」の苗の根っこに執着して、ひとつずつ吟味していきます。

まず、一番太いA を剪定バサミで先っちょ３センチほど切ってみました。瑞々しいとは言い難いけど、少なくとも黒くはない。

次にBをかるく掴んでみると、あっけなくもげて来ました。切断面は真っ黒で元々枯れている部分です。

最後に一番細い根っこのCをチェック。

切ってみると真っ黒です。写真がボケたので、

結局、「七月早脆王」の台木の根っこはこれだけになりました。この状態から苗が生存することはあり得ないでしょう。穂木が生きていて、5-6月頃に芽生えてきても、それは穂木に元から蓄積されていた養分だけで伸び出してくるのであって、根っこからは水分さえ供給されない。その結果、新芽が数センチ伸びたあたりで干からびて、養分を使い尽くした苗は枯死します。

根っこの切断面はオーソサイドに数秒間つけて消毒したあと、とりあえずバケツの水に浸しておきました。

バラ科の接ぎ木 Grafting of rose family trees

 今日は真冬に戻ったかのような寒い日。しかも嵐のような強風が一日中吹いていました。今週末までこの寒さが続く予報なので、今年の１月に行ったバラ科果樹の高接ぎの接ぎ穂が枯れないか心配です。

リンゴの紅玉をクッキングアップル２品種に接ぎました。これ↓は「グラニースミス」に接いだもの。

It felt like 'back to winter' today with freezing gale lasting all day.  Moreover, the forecast says that this cold weather will stay up to the end of this week.  I did some grafting on apple and plum trees during January this year.  In response to the warm weather we had over the weekend, the scions started to move, but I am worried that the return of the cold weather might put an end to them.

This is the Granny Smith, with a scion from Kogyoku, another cooking apple.  (Kogyoku, under another name, was originally introduced to Japan from the US more than 100 years ago.  It is still loved as a cooking apple variety.)

バラ科なので２，３日前の暖かい陽気で急に芽吹いてきました。

こちら↓は紅玉を「紅の夢」に接いだもの。紅玉本体は２年前の夏にシンクイムシにボロボロにされたあと、少しは回復したけど本調子ではないので、授粉樹を確保しておくためです。

This one is a red-flesh variety called Kurenai-no-Yume, a very new and rare variety, with a scion from Kogyoku.  Kogyoku was plagued with stem borer during summer 2 years ago.  It has recovered somewhat but I am trying to ensure its continuity, since I want to use it as the pollinator.

盆栽の桜「旭山」の蕾も膨らんできました。去年の春に開花苗で買ったのが、その小さいままで１年経ったので維持が楽です。

The bonsai cherry tree I bought in spring last year has remained as tiny as it was.  The flower buds are starting to come out.

これら↓２か所の接ぎ穂は、鉢植えのスモモ「ハニーハート」を地植えの「李王」に接いだもの。

今年は蕾がたくさん着いているので、初収穫にこぎつけそう。ハニーハートは酸味が少なく、果肉は離核なので、私の理想タイプのスモモです。しかも赤肉なので、ジャムにすると見栄えがしそう。

Honey Heart has never had so many flower buds since I bought the plant 2 years ago.  I am hoping to get some fruits this year.  This plum is sweet with little tartness.  What's more, the flesh comes off the stone easily - an aspect I prize in plums.

寒風のなか、タイガが付き合ってくれました。

Taiga insisted on staying outside in the cold wind, as I went about in the garden.

朝夕の散歩 Dog walks

 早朝散歩で通りかかった６丁目の風景。この小路の先は行き止まりで基本的に住人しか立ち入ってはいけなさそうなので、広い通りから眺めたものです。春のほのぼのした雰囲気でいいなぁ、と思いながら足を止めていました。うちは３丁目ですが、すぐ隣の６丁目には好みの風景がたくさんあります。

Taiga wanted to walk through the residential area this morning.  This is one of my favourite views in the district next to ours.  I have never walked through this path, since it looks private - probably for residents only.  So, I always take a glance from the main street.

By using the zoom function of the camera, I can pretend to be walking down the path.

満開の花桃の木がアクセントになっている風景。つきあたりにはアンズらしきピンクの花の木もありましたが、写真ではぼんやりしています。

The red blossoms of the flowering peach tree add to make the view attractive.  Further, there is an apricot tree in full bloom at the end of the path, although this photo does not show it well.

帰ろうとしてすぐ近くで出会った珍しい狆の２頭。血のつながりは無いけどいずれも９歳の女の子たちだそうです。海外ではジャパニーズ・チンとして人気があるようですが、なぜか日本では見かけません。

Nearby, we met a couple of Japanese Chins - the only Chins I have ever seen.  This breed seems to have been completely forgotten in Japan, probably because it is neither fish nor fowl.  Their appearance is nothing like indigenous Japanese breeds so, if you want to get a Japanese dog, you would think of Shiba Inu etc.  On the other hand, if you want to get a non-Japanese dog, you would think of European and American breeds.

家のすぐ近くまで来たら、近所のペキニーズのユキヤと会えました。さっきの狆の子たちと大きさは似ていますが、骨格はがっしりしている印象です。

When we came back to our district, we saw Yukiya, my neighbour's Pekinese.  He is roughly of the same size as the Chins we just saw.

いつ会っても初めて見る洋服を着ていますが、ユキヤ専用のクローゼットに数えきれないほどの服が入っているそうです。

Every time I see him, he is wearing clothes I have never seen before.  At home, he has his own closet with countless clothes.

せっかくの良い天気なので、早めの夕方散歩に出ました。まずは城北公園手前にある、いつ行っても貸し切りの草地。以前は畑だったのですが、今はいろんな雑草が生い茂っています。写真左側の雑草は、

We had an early afternoon walk to take advantage of the nice weather.  We arrived at the field near the Johoku Park.  This was a farm field until a few years ago and its existence is still not well known.  As a result, we have the field to ourselves every time.

以前飼っていたセキセイインコが大好きだった早春の草。お店で売られている野菜はすぐ飽きるけど、旬の山野草なら毎日同じものでも喜んで食べる様子はいじらしかった。

城北公園へ移動。初めて見る子と挨拶。

We moved to the Johoku Park and met a new face.

保護された子で推定４歳の男の子。脚がグレイハウンドのように長い一方、写真では見えないけど体中に薄茶色のスポットがあるのはイングリッシュセッターを連想させます。

A young male, 4 years old, named Taro.  He grew up in a pack of wild dogs and got rescued.  He seems to carry a variety of genes - long legs suggestive of a grey hound, spots all over his body suggesting an English setter, and

his ears and tail stand like a Japanese breed's.

飼い主さんたちによると、茨城県では猟犬が頻繁に遺棄されるそうで、この子は野犬の群れで生まれ育ったのを保護されたそうです。野犬の群れ育ちだと人間が苦手な子が多く、この子も基本的に他所の人には寄って行かないそうですが、タイガを気に入ってくれたおかげで私は撫でさせてもらえました。

According to his owner, having grown up as a wild dog, he does not like being near humans other than his owners.  Luckily, he liked Taiga and let me stroke him as I wanted.

すぐ近くで待っていてくれた豆柴のマル君。大興奮で迎えてくれました。いつ会っても本当にカワイイ。

Nearby, Maru, a miniature Black Shiba Inu, was waiting for us to approach.  He is super cute.

リスボンレモンとキーライム Lemon and Key lime

今日は日中の最高気温が20℃と、とても暖かかったのでリスボンレモンとキーライムを部屋の外に出しました。 冬の間、無加温の南向き部屋で過ごしたものです。

It was a very warm day today with the maximum temperature reaching 20℃.  I brought out the Lisbon lemon and Key lime from the room where they had spent the winter.  The room's heater was off all the time, but it did not harm the plants.

レモンには蕾がどっさり着いています。この苗は２年前の初夏にセールで買ったもので、棒苗が到着したときの状態は、夏なのに振るい根でカラカラ、ついていた葉っぱは銀色のが３枚だけ。まるで出荷までその辺に転がっていたような状態でした。生きているのかどうか判断できるまで３か月くらいかかりましたが、今では非常に元気に育っています。

The lemon tree has lots of flower buds.  I bought this plant in early summer 2 years ago.  The plant was in a miserable state and it took about 3 months before I felt that it was likely to survive.  Now, it is thriving.

昨日気づいた開花第一号。子房が僅かに肥大しているので自家受粉したようです。今年は実を着けさせたいです。

The first flower opened yesterday and it seems to have self-pollinated.  Perhaps I can expect to see some fruits this year?

こちらは実生のキーライム。スーパーで売られていた実の種を蒔いたものですが、びゅんびゅん育つので、上のほうの枝は摘心してあります。タヒチライムと同じ程度の耐寒性があるような印象です。来年の春までには充実した接ぎ穂が取れそうなので、地植えのリスボンに高接ぎしてみる予定です。

This Key lime is a seedling from the fruits I bought in a supermarket a few years ago.  It is so vigorous that I have to keep pinching the growth at the top.  The impression I get is that this plant's cold hardiness is similar to that of the Tahitian lime.
