夕方散歩 Evening Walk

城北公園へ向かう途中、タイガはときどき手前の屋敷林に立ち寄ります。ここは古い農家の敷地だったところの一部ですが、今では一般に提供されています。

On our way to the Johoku Park, Taiga often stops by this woodland.  This was a part of the woods surrounding an old farmhouse, but now it is open to the general public.

相当昔からある農家だったようで、様々な大木が植わっています。この林で初めてみたものの一つに、ムクロジの木があります。ムクロジの種は、羽根つきの羽の黒い球に使われているということも、ここで実を拾っていた人から知りました。この小路の奥にその大木があるのですが、秋に実が落ちてこないと私には見分けがつきません。

The farmer's family was ancient and the trees in the surrounding woodland are also ancient, as well as containing unusual trees.  For example, I had never seen a tree called 'mukuroji' (Sapindus mukrorossi)  until a person told me, who was collecting the fruits fallen from the tree.  He also told me that the flesh can be used to make soap, and the seeds are used as the base for a shuttlecock that used to be used during the New Year in Japan.  That huge tree is somewhere in this corner, but I cannot recognise it until the fruits fall off in autumn.

この大木は、何と柿の木です。ただし、よほど原始的なものらしく、ピンポン玉程度の実がなります。

Surprisingly, this ancient tree is a persimmon tree.  However, it must be a very primitive one since its fruits are no bigger than a ping pong ball.  Modern day persimmon trees do not grow like this.

竹やぶは孟宗竹。

The bamboo woods are of Chinese origin.

今日のタイガは城北中央公園ではなく、反対方向の茂呂山公園を目指しました。

Instead of going to the Johoku Central Park, Taiga chose to go to the Moroyama Park which was in another direction.

今日の練馬区の最高気温は38℃でした。最近の猛暑の影響で、公園の落葉樹の枝がだんだんとスカスカになってきています。

Today's maximum temperature reached 38℃ in our Nerima Ward.  Due to the lasting heat wave, the branches of deciduous trees are starting to shed leaves.

上り切った広場につくと、誰もいませんでした。

When we reached the top of the hill, we saw that there was no-one else.

近づいて行くと、いつものスリゴロを始めました。

When I approached her, she started her usual rolling on the grass.

ガバっと起きたと思ったら、

started running like a mad dog in various directions.

でも、年なので長くは続かずヘロヘロになります。

However, she is too old to run endlessly and soon gets exhausted.

息をついたあとはベンチでオヤツタイム。

After catching her breath, we sat at the table for Taiga's treat.

この顔、ハイエナの赤ちゃんに似ています。

When she is all attention, she looks like a baby hyena.

オヤツで一服したあとは、茂呂山公園のふもと近くにある公園にも立ち寄りました。ここは城北公園の一部ですが、数年前に完成した最も新しい公園のせいか、いつも草刈りが行き届いていて大切にされている印象です。一方、城北中央公園およびその周辺の草地は草丈数十センチにもなっていて、中型犬でも入りにくいほどなので、ここは別世界。

After the break, we went down to the park at the foot of the Moroyama Park.  Just like Moroyama, this park is also a part of the Johoku Park.  However, this is the newest addition to Johoku Park, and they seem to treat this one like the crown jewel - the grass is always kept prim.  In contrast, elsewhere in Johoku Park, the grass has not been cut for weeks, and it is now too tall even for medium-sized dogs to walk in.  So, this park is on another planet.

なぜかこの公園も貸し切り状態だったので、しばらくここに留まりました。僅かに風が吹いていたし、何より草が短くて清潔でした。

Since we had the whole park to ourselves, we stayed a little longer, enjoying the evening breeze as well as the clean, short grass.

ローゼルに蕾 Roselle Flower Buds

スーパーからの帰りに、途中のJAに立ち寄ったら目に入ったこの２本の苗。日本を含め東アジアに自生するサンシュユです。３年くらい前、10本ほど並んでいたときは2,500円だったのが、２個売れ残っている今は1,500円に値下げされていました。なぜか葉っぱの色が同じではないけれど、

On my way home from the supermarket, I dropped in to the nearby JA and saw these two fruiting dogwood plants.  These are wild dogwood trees indigenous to the northern Far East Asia.  A few years ago, about 10 of these plants were put on display, priced at 2,500 yen each.  Now that only 2 are left, the price has come down to 1,500 yen.  I do not know why the colour of leaves are different, but 

左の茶色っぽい苗のほうが今年の実の数も、来春用の蕾の数も多いです。

the plant on the left with darker leaves have more fruits for this year, and more flower buds for next spring.

これらの実が今度の冬には完熟になると思うと、かなり誘惑されそうになりました。が、グッとこらえて今日のところはガマン。将来、うちのパイオニアやカザンラクが実を着け始めても、この苗を大切に扱えるかと思うと、自信がないからです。

To think that these berries will be ripening in the coming winter, I was rather tempted to buy the plant.  However, I resisted for the following reason.  When my Cornus mas Pioneer and Kazanlak start fruiting in the future, I cannot say with confidence that I will still cherish this plant.

他の苗を見て回っていると、うちのローゼル苗のきょうだいたちがまだ売れ残ったままでした。右の楕円で囲ってあるのは、うちのと同じ赤花（正確にはガク）の苗。左側は白花の品種。

After that, I looked around and came to this corner with roselle plants.  The two plants in the circle are the variety with red calyxes - i.e., my roselle's siblings.  The ones on the left are the variety with white calyxes.

これが赤花の苗で、２本あります。小さな鉢でカラカラの土に植わったままなので、脇枝が１本も出ていない状態。

These two are the red variety.  Growing in tiny pots and dry soil, I do not see any branches.

蕾らしきものは見当たりません。

Nor do I see any flower buds.

一方、白花の苗のほうは今にも開花しそうな蕾があります。私は白花には興味ないのでスルーしました。

In contrast, on the white flower variety, there were flower buds nearly ready to open.  White flowers in general do not interest me, so I walked past them.

帰宅して、我が家のローゼル苗。毎日２度の水やりを欠かさないのでビュンビュン育って、今では草丈170cm超になっています。枝の分岐も旺盛で、数本の脇枝にも支柱が必要になっています。

At home, I checked my roselle plant.  I water it twice a day, and the plant has been growing thick and fast - it is taller than 170 cm now.  It also has many tall branches and some of them require props.

JAで見た赤花苗のカリカリの葉っぱとの違いは大きい。

The difference in shape and size of the leaves of this plant v.s. those of the siblings at JA is quite obvious.

ついに蕾が出てきました。今年は９月も暑さが持続しそうなので、相当の数の花が着くと期待しています。

At last, I see flower buds.  Summer weather this year is expected to continue into September, so I should be getting countless flowers on this plant.

それにしても暑いですが、空の一部にはウロコ雲に似たものがかかっていました。

Another hot day today, but in a corner of the sky, I saw clouds associated with autumn - in Japanese, 'scaly clouds', and in English, 'mackerel sky'.

 

今年の近江新生姜の出荷シーズンは終わったようで、お店でもう見かけません。よって、この瓶が今年最後の甘煮になります。沢山あったときは料理にも使っていたけれど、今ではドリンク用にのみ使用しています。

The season for the large and white ginger has come to an end, and I cannot find them in shops anymore.  So, this jar is the last one.  When there was plenty, I used to use the slices in cooking, too.  Now that it will be running out soon, I use it only for making refreshing drinks.

蜂蜜とショウガのスライス+煮汁を水で溶かして飲むと、空き腹に刺さるように美味しです。

Add water to honey, ginger slices and their syrup, and stir in some ice cubes.  Every time I dink it on my empty stomach, I feel coming back alive.

冬棗 2か月後 Winter Jujube, 2 months on

 ６月28日に配達された冬棗の苗が、当初の２倍の樹高にまで育ちました。

The winter jujube that arrived on 28th June this year has since doubled in height.

配達当時はこの↓状態でした。６月末だというのに、恒常的な枝がまだ１本も出ていなくて心配でしたが、その後、第１節と第３節から恒常的な枝が伸び始めました。

This is how it looked when the plant was delivered.  Even though it was the end of June, there was not a single permanent branch yet.  However, a few weeks later, new buds started to appear on the first and 3rd nodes and they became permanent branches.

６月28日（28th June 2025）

主幹の第１節と第３節から伸びた枝はV字型に広げて、それぞれの分岐した枝が更に直立の新梢を出すようにしました。

Those permanent branches were spread into a V shape, so that each branch's limbs would in turn grow new little twigs standing upright.

その結果、枝葉が密に育っています。

As a result, the branches are looking dense now.

ちなみに、冬棗の着果率は低いことで有名だそうですが、将来こんなふうに実が生ると嬉しいです。そのためにには毎年の環状剥皮など、いろんな方法がとられるようですが、私はなるべく自然体で行きたいです。

According to articles published in China (machine-translated into English), winter jujube is a variety known for its poor fruit setting.  I would love to see my tree looking like this sometime in the future.  In order to improve fruit setting, farmers employ various methods, including annual girdling (ring barking).  However, I prefer to keep it natural as long as I can bear to wait.

ハナミズキ？ Flowering Dogwood?

 隣町の江古田での買い物からの帰り道、通りがかった民家の庭木に目が行きました。塀のすぐ横に植わっているのでマジマジ眺めることができました。

On my way home from shopping in the neighbouring town, I passed a garden where I saw this dogwood tree.  Since it was growing next to the fence, I could take a close look from the road.

大き目の実が生っているので、最初はコーネリアンチェリー（西洋サンシュユ）では？と思って観察し始めたのですが、

The tree had large fruits growing and, at first, I thought it was a Cornelian cherry tree (Cornus mas).  However, 

実の付き方をよく見たら、どうやらハナミズキのようでした。例の畑の隅っこに植わっているサンシュユの実よりずっと大きかったです。

I began to think that it might be a flowering dogwood.  The reason why I mistook initially was because these fruits were larger than those on that tree growing in the corner of the farmland that I pass during walks with Taiga.

来年用の花芽も出ています。畑のサンシュユの蕾は黒っぽい殻に覆われているのに対し、この木のは浅緑色です。

The flower bud for next spring on this tree is light green, whereas flower buds on the other dogwood are covered in dark shells.

帰宅して、今年の５月に買ったコーネリアンチェリーのパイオニアで違いを確認。ちなみに、この↓花芽はつい最近見つけたものです。

At home, I looked at my Cornus mas Pioneer that I bought in May this year.  Actually, I noticed this↓ flower bud only this month.

以前から気づいていた３個の蕾は以下です。

The following are the 3 flower buds that I have been watching for some time.

以前はこれも「花芽」にカウントして３個でしたが、今は本当にそうなのか疑念が沸いてきました。膨らみの先っちょが僅かに開いてきたからです。本当に中に蕾が入っているのなら、この時期に動き始めるはずがないです。かといって、柄の先についた丸い膨らみなので、葉芽にも見えない。葉芽の場合、首（柄）は無く、葉腋にうずくまるように着いています。

いずれにせよ、花芽が他に確保できたので来春の楽しみができました。

Previously, I counted this one among the 3 flower buds.  However, I am getting less certain now.  The tip of the bud is slightly parting.  If this is really a dormant bud with flower buds inside, it should not be moving before cold winter.  Having said that, this bud has a neck (stem) underneath it.  If it were an axillary bud, it should be sitting deep in the axil.

At any rate, with a few flower buds in the bag, I can look forward to events next spring.

パイオニアの現在の姿。夏に伸びた枝の葉は、コガネの食害に会ってボロボロですが、花芽は下のほうの、春に出た部分に着いています。

This is how Pioneer looks currently.  The light-coloured top is from this summer's growth, and the leaves were brutally eaten by scarab beetles.  The bottom part with dark leaves was the original part when the plant was delivered to me in May, and that is where the flower buds are found.

去年の５月に買ったカザンラクには、全く花芽が見当たりません。カザンラクは自家受粉する一方、パイオニアは基本的に他の品種の花粉が必要だそうです。花芽が出ているのが逆でないのが残念。

This is Kazanlak that I got in May last year - no flower buds at all.  Now, Kazanlak is self-fertile, while Pioneer basically requires a cross pollinator.  I wish it were the other way around.

夕方散歩 Evening Walk

 夕方散歩で公園に向かおうとしたら、近所のお屋敷の背後の空に、珍しい光景が見られました。まるで舞台の照明のようです。時間は18:01時で、あたりはまだ明るい時間でした。

In the sky behind the large house of a neighbour, there were cumulonimbus clouds which were lit up by the evening sun.  It was like the lighting on a large stage.  At 1801 hours, it was not dark yet.

しかも、照明の中へ飛行機が入ってきました。

Into the stage light, an aeroplane appeared.

少し歩いて先へ進むと、

When I walked a little farther,

今度は機体は見えないけれど、飛行機雲が入道雲の方角に向かって進んでいるのが見えました。

this time, a contrail was approaching the clouds, although the aircraft was not visible to the eye.

珍しい光景を見て何だか得した気分でした。

I felt lucky after seeing these rare sights.

城北中央公園に着くと、

まるで申し合わせたように、犬友たちが次々と到着しました。まずは柴ミックスのスバル君。

as if by prior arrangement, familiar faces arrived one after another.  First, a male Shiba-mix, named Subaru.

Then a female White Shiba Inu, Omochi.

コンちゃんは着いてすぐに、スバルママにオヤツをねだっていました。

As soon as he arrived, Kon started begging Subaru's mom for a treat.

さらに、先日公園の上の広場で初めて会った、黒柴のメリーちゃん。メリーちゃんの足の爪の一つ一つに黒い色が入っているので、まるでペディキュアをしているかのようです。

And, finally, the female Black Shiba Inu puppy, Merry, whom we met a few weeks ago in another part of the park.  You cannot mistake Merry since she is the only one with black nails on her paws, as if they were meticulously pedicured.

普段はキャン吠えするトムが、生後半年の女の子のメリーちゃんと静かに挨拶していました。

Merry is such a sweet puppy that even the normally yapping Tom was happy to greet her peacefully.

公園からの帰り道は既に暗くなっていました。さっきの夕焼けを見た場所に来ると、新月がかかっていました。時間はちょうど1時間後の19:01時。だいぶ日が短くなってきました。

It was beginning to get dark when we headed home.  When we came to the place where we saw the cumulonimbus clouds earlier, there was the new moon.  At 1901 hours, it was pitch dark.  Days are definitely getting shorter.
