午後散歩 Afternoon walk

 公園へ向かう途中で会った初対面の子。14歳の女の子で名前はコロちゃん。

A 14-year old female, named Koro, that we met on our way to the park.  

写真では伝わりにくいですが、体の長さはタイガより上です。若くて筋肉が全体的についていた頃は、タイガよりもずっと大柄だったと思われます。今は足取りが頼りないですが、この大きさと14歳という年齢にしては、非常に状態が良いと言えます。タイガに関して希望をもらえた気分。

Although in the picture Koro does not look large, in fact, her body is much longer than that of Taiga.  When she was young with lots of muscles, she must have been much larger than Taiga.  Her legs are no longer strong but, considering her size and age, she seems to be in a very good condition, which gives me hope for Taiga.  

私に対しても好奇心をもって近づいてきました。

She also showed a strong desire to know me.

飼い主さんによると、他所の犬が近づいてくると自己防衛的になって唸るそうですが、タイガに対しては全く敵意を見せなかったので驚いていました。

According to her owner, Koro normally growls in a defensive way when other dogs come close to her.  So he was pleasantly surprised to see Koro being friendly with Taiga.

茂呂山公園に着いたころにはかなり夕方っぽくなっていました。

When we reached the Moroyama Park, it was already near dusk.

今年はモミジの紅葉はあまり期待できなさそうです。紅葉が始まる前にほとんどの木の葉っぱが落ちてしまっています。

The Japanese maple trees have lost most of their leaves after several days' wintry gale, before they had the chance to turn into bright red and yellow.

そんなことはお構いなしのタイガは、いつものスリゴロ。人間にとっては寒いくらいの日ですが、冷たい草の上が心地よいらしいです。

That did not bother Taiga who was only happy to enjoy the cool ground.

あっという間に暗くなり始めました。このあと中央公園のドッグランも覗いてみましたが、ほとんど闇のなかでした。

The day turned into evening very quickly.  We went to the Central Park after this to see some friends in the dog park, but it was all in darkness.

香酸類 Citrus fruits

 種無しカボスを収穫しないでいるうちに黄色く色づいてきました。カボスは通常、青いうちに料理に利用されますが、私はジュースにして飲むのが好きなので色づくのは無問題です。

Seedless and thornless Kabosu fruits have started to turn yellow on the outside.  Kabosu fruits are normally used in cooking while they are green and less juicy.  However, I grow Kabosu for extracting the juice for drinking purposes and it tastes much nicer when ripe.

門のすぐそばに植わっていたブラッドオレンジのタロッコが、今年の１-２月に衰弱して枯れ始めたのでその跡地にカボスを植えました。地植えとして初年度ですが、10号鉢植えのときよりさすがに実付きが良いです。まだ樹高１メートルにもなっていません。

I had this plant in a pot, until the blood orange tree (Tarocco) died during winter earlier this year.  As a potted plant, this tree used to produce only around 5 fruits but now it is turning quite prolific even though it is less than 1 meter tall.

こちらは種無しスダチ。カボスよりも更に色づいています。ビタミンＣ摂取のために毎日絞って飲んでいます。ビタミンＣの一日の必要量はほんの微量で、取り過ぎても余分な分は排泄されてしまうそうなので、スダチのような小粒の香酸類がぴったりだと思います。

The thornless and Seedless Sudachi fruits have gone completely yellow.  As with Kabosu, these are normally used in cooking while they are green (people think the green taste and flavour are superior).  When the fruits are this ripe, the juice tastes much nicer in my view.

こちらは３-4年前にセールで売られていたトゲなしリスボンレモン。苗は税抜きで980円でしたが、福岡からの送料がはるかに高かったです。でも、トータルではお得感があった。こちらもタロッコと同様、冬の間に枯れ始めたベルガモットを処分して、その跡地に植えたもの。やはり10号鉢植えのときよりも実付きが良くなりました。レモンは黄色くなるまで木につけたまま待ちます。

This is a thorn-free Lisbon Lemon.  As with Kabosu, this was in a pot until earlier this year.  The Bergamot that used to be here went dry and dead during the winter and I planted the Lemon in its spot.  I am leaving the fruits untouched until they become ripe and yellow.

どちらも果肉がすっかり黄色くなっています。いずれも「種無し」品種とはいっても、種が1-2個入ることはありますが、通常のカボスやスダチは種ゴロゴロなのと比べると全然違います。種がない分、果汁がたっぷりだしゴミも少ない。

The flesh of both fruit is ripe and yellow.  Although called "seedless", it is acceptable to have 1-2 seeds in a fruit.  Normally, both Kabosu and Sudachi are full of seeds and very cumbersome to extract the juice due to the seeds.  With these seedless types, you get more juice for the absence of seeds, and less garbage to deal with.

夕方散歩 Evening walk

 昨日の夜から降り出した雨は、今日の午後２時過ぎにやっと止みました。その後もどんより曇っていたので暗いまま夕方に。午後４時頃の散歩では、いつもと違う住宅街をまわりました。氷川台駅近くまで戻ってきたところにある不思議な２軒の建物。昭和のドラマのセットから抜け出したような外観。右の建物のガラス戸の内側にある色褪せたポスターも昭和そのもの。周りの住宅街からは浮いた存在ですが、特に条例による「保存対象」をうかがわせるような看板もないのが不思議です。

The rain that started last night did not stop until after 2 p.m. this afternoon.  Even after that, the day remained dull and dark.  We went out at around 4 p.m. for the 3rd walk today, walking through the unfamiliar residential area for a change.  Near the underground station, we saw a couple of very old-fashioned houses - they looked like something out of old dramas set in the 1950-60s.  Even the faded posters inside the house on the right were old-fashioned.  Obviously not inhabited any more, but I could not find any signs that indicated that these buildings were under conservation order.

いずれの建物も入口の様子からして、昔は何かのお店をやっていた印象です。

Judging by the entrance of each house, they must have been shops of some sort.

まだ日の光はあるので城北公園へ向かいました。

As it was not too dark yet, we headed for the Johoku Central Park.

最近知った「城北中央公園通り」という道を通って向かいます。

やっと公園に到着。いつもとは違う入口です。

入口近くの広場に、これぞ柴！という雰囲気の子がいました。ゴマタイプの毛色。

Near the entrance, we saw a Shiba Inu with sesame colour, eyeing Taiga.  Even from a distance, I could tell that he was not a socialised individual.  

柴独特の唸り声。和犬のなかで何故か柴だけがああいう声を出せる。

We were greeted with the growl unique to the Shiba.  Among all the Japanese breeds, only Shiba Inus produce that kind of scream.

３歳の男の子で、私が手を差し出すと腕の下をくぐって「なでろ」の仕草をしましたが、タイガに対しては終始唸っていました。柴には本当に笑わされます。

A 3-year old boy, friendly enough with me - when I stretched my arm towards his nose, he rubbed his head and shoulder against the base of my arm.  Nevertheless, he kept screaming at Taiga. 

秋の日暮れはつるべ落としと言いますが、本当にあっという間。

It was getting dark fast, so we headed towards the field where we normally come in and go out of the park.

いつもは「公園入口の草地」と勝手に呼んでいる広場へ来ると、珍しい北海道犬を見かけました。左の子は11歳の男の子、右は14歳の女の子だそうです。

Near the exit, we saw two Hokkaido-ken - a very rare sighting in this park.  The one on the left is an 11-year old male, and the one on the right is a 14-year old female.

男の子のほうは非常に甘えん坊でした。

The boy on the left was very sweet and friendly.

朝散歩 Morning walk

 今朝、公園へ向かう途中で、ジャーマンピンシャーのリアちゃんを見かけました。いつものように頬被りをしていましたが、今朝は私たちと会ったときの反応が微妙に違っていました。ママによると、耳が薄っぺらで頬被り無しでは切れてしまうので、ああいうファッションを続けていたのですが、それが悪化して遂には壊死が始まったので、断耳の手術をしたばかりだそうです。そのため他所のワンコに会うと、今は少し自己防衛的になるそうです。早く元気になって、またタイガとじゃれて欲しいです。

On our way to the park, we ran into Leah, my neighbour's German Pinscher girl.  She was wearing her usual head gear but her attitude was slightly different from her normal boisterous greeting.  According to her mom, Leah's flimsy ears started to go necrotic and she had to have her ears cropped a few days ago.  As a result, she gets defensive when meeting other dogs on the street.  I hope she will recover soon.

公園に着くと清々しい青空で、人気の少ないのがもったいないほどでした。

Hardly any people in the park on such a beautiful morning - what a pity.

As we were enjoying our usual walking course, 

近所のホワイトレトリーバーのオモちゃんが通りかかりました。

my neighbour's White Retriever caught up with us.

まだ若くて大柄、元気いっぱいの子なので、タイガは引き気味。

Since she is much younger than Taiga with lots of energy, Taiga tends to be reserved.

オモちゃんが去ってからも森林浴を楽しみました。

After parting with her, we continued to enjoy our walk through the woods in peace.

夕方ちかく、スーパーの帰りに地元JAを覗いてしまいました。そこで見かけたのが、また新たに入荷した食用菊の「もってのほか」ですが、今日のは今まで見たことない大きな花柄でした。そこで、つい、ひと苗。

I made a mistake of looking into the JA this afternoon, on my way home from the supermarket.  I saw an edible chrysanthemum plant with unusually large flowers.

左の苗が今日の買い物。右のは先日のもの。

The one on the left is today's find, and the one on the right is from a few days ago.  The flowers on the new plant are much larger than those of the previous one.

黄色の食用菊は、奥から「松風」、手前の濃い黄色のは「かなわ」。きょうの「もってのほか」との色のコントラストも気に入っています。来年以降もこんな大柄に咲くとうれしいなあ。

I love the colour contrast between the yellow edible chrysanthemums and the new one.  I hope the flowers on this new plant will be just as large in next season onwards.

朝散歩 Morning walk

 近所の家に咲いている目をひく花、「カッシア（インカの輝き）」。春の開花もハデハデですが、秋の花も春に負けない豪華さです。ちなみに、「カッシア（アンデスの乙女）」の開花期は秋だけだそうです。地元JAで今売られているのは「アンデス」のほうです。見た目は似ているけど、「インカ」の花のほうが花柄が大きく、花びらが分厚くしっかりしています。

The cassia blossoms in season in a neighbour's garden.  There are many varieties of cassia in the world, but this one is my favourite.  This variety produces abundant flowers in spring and autumn.

タイガ様の気まぐれで今朝は足を延ばして、かつて豊島園のあった（今はUSJが工事中）方角へ歩きました。途中のお地蔵さんのスポット。一年を通して鉢植えの花や造花が置いてあるので、地蔵本体は後ろのほうに隠れています。私にとってここは便利な目印で、自転車であるお店に行くときここまで真っ直ぐに来て、右折すると道に迷わずそのお店にたどり着けます。

Taiga wanted to walk in the opposite direction to the usual Johoku Park.  We stopped momentarily to pay respect to the Jizo (religious stone statute commonly seen in Japan) - the tiny figure with a red cap behind the flowers.  There are flower offerings all year around.

昔懐かしい小菊。花のキツイ臭いも好きです。

旧としま園まであと数百メートルというところにある橋を渡って帰ります。

I think we have walked far enough - we stopped at a bridge to enjoy the air and blue sky.

川の左岸は桜並木、右岸はイチョウ並木なので、春と秋に楽しめます

On the left of the river are cherry trees, and on the right are ginkgo trees.  So, we can enjoy the view in spring and autumn.

橋の上でくつろいでいたら、黒柴が通りがかりにギャン吠えして行きました。

As we were having a nice rest, a black Shiba Inu passed by, barking at Taiga unprovoked.

気を取り直して、清々しい散歩道を満喫。

We enjoyed the crisp walk in peace on our way back home.

だいぶ寒くなってきたので、パッションフルーツの鉢を取り込みました。ツルは根元から40cmくらいの高さで切って処分。何と、たくさんの実が生っていました。9月の開花だったので、ツルの負担を抑えるために人工授粉したのは10個だけ。後の花は完全に無視していたのに、勝手に受粉していたようです。夏に毎日青い未熟果が害獣に落とされて、それを追熟させたらとても美味しかったので、今日のも追熟させてみます。

以下は全く私の個人的な印象：夏の開花では高気温のおかげで花が１時間ほどで開いてしまい、オシベとメシベが熟すまでには形状が変形して離れてしまいます。秋の開花では一日がかりで花が開くので、花びらが半開きの間にシベが熟して花の中で授粉するようです。初夏には人口授粉しておかないと翌日には花が床に落ちているのに、秋には花が落ちているのを見た覚えがありません。

I took in the passion fruit plant for the coming winter, by cutting it down to about 40cm above the roots.  Unexpectedly, there were a lot of fruits large enough to be ripened off the tree.  After the summer harvest, the plant had new flowers in September and I pollinated only 10 of them, since there was not enough time left for the fruits to grow.  However, seeing all these fruits, I can only conclude that the Edulils variety can self-pollinate under a certain circumstance.

When it flowers in the summer, it opens completely in a matter of one hour under the strong sun and, by the time the pistil and stamen become mature enough, their shapes have undergone a transformation and they are placed too far from each other.  In the case of autumn flowers, it takes almost a day to open and the pistil and stamen become mature enough inside the half-open flower, which is conducive to self-pollination.
