公園で At the park

 公園の姫リンゴが満開です。城北公園の方針では園内の植物には一切、農薬等を使わないので、過去に何本も消滅しています。なのでここに植わっている数本は、いつも幼い苗ばかりです。それでも開花すると眺めていて嬉しくなります。

The Japanese crab apple trees in the park are in full bloom.  Under the policy of Johoku Park management, none of the plants get insecticide, whether they be fruit trees or just any other trees.  As a result, crab apple trees do not last in this park and the trees are always young ones.

帰り、久しぶりに屋敷林の一つに寄りました。

On our way home, we walked through the privately owned land open for the general public.  This is the first time we come here this year and I started checking every tree to see if it survived the winter.

ここはモミジの木が多いので、新芽の時期は何時間でもいたくらい心地よい場所です。

This woodland has lots of Japanese maple trees and it is so pleasant that I could spend hours here if it was not for Taiga's boredom.

帰宅して庭の様子を見回っていたら気づいたのですが、今年初めて山椒の苗に蕾が出ていました。

これまでに、朝倉３本、ブドウ１本を買ったことありますが、実山椒は弱くて諦めました。どうせ実が生っても激辛ものは食べられなくなったので、数年前に地元JAで「葉山椒」として売られていた苗をダメ元で買いました。樹高20cmほどで180円くらいのが、毎年売られています。私の場合、新芽を年に２，３回使うだけなので樹形は整えずに完全放置。

Back home, I was going through the plants in my garden and noticed that the Japanese pepper plant had flower buds this year for the first time.  I bought it as a male tree some 5-6 years ago, when it measured about 20cm and costing less than 2 dollars.  Female trees are more expensive and they tend to be very delicate, with the result, I have lost 4 female plants in the past.  In any case, I only wanted to use the leaves for my cooking since the berries are too spicy for me.  So, I bought this dirt cheap 'male' tree but I had a pleasant surprise.

その苗に初めて着いた蕾をよーく見たら、雌花です。私のなかでは「葉山椒」というラベルで激安苗は雄木という意識だったので、これは嬉しいサプライズです。しかも実が生る山椒なのに日陰・完全放置で丈夫。果樹を扱うように大切に扱いはじめたとたんに過去の実山椒のようにデリケートになりそうなので、このままでいきます。

These are female flowers!  Now I am looking forward to seeing the berries in the summer.

八重桜 Double-petalled Cherry Blossoms

 ソメイヨシノが散って以来の茂呂山公園へ行ってみました。八重桜が満開です。

We went to Moroyama Park for the first time since the end of the Somei Yoshino cherry blossom season.  Now the double-petalled trees are in full bloom.

同じ八重桜の木でも個体差があるようで、階段途中の何本かは花の着き方が透かした感じのがありますが、この木はぼたぼたに着いています。保存して和菓子に使われる八重桜は、この関山（カンザン）という品種です。うちの鉢植えの関山は、桜にとってムリな環境のせいか、花着きはスカスカのほうですが、スイーツに利用はできます。

These double flower cherry trees are a variety called 'Kanzan'.  Flowers and leaves are preserved to be used as garnish for Japanese sweets.

花を見ているだけで最高にシアワセな気分になります。

Just looking at these flowers makes me so happy.

タイガはもうすぐ9歳になるので、これからは意識していろんな写真を撮っておこうと思います。最近、私が見てもお婆ちゃん顔になってきたような気がします。

この公園は桜が終わった後は、モミジの若葉、秋の紅葉と、いろいろ楽しめます。蚊が出る前にピクニックランチに来ようと思います。

These maple trees will be providing a nice shade soon, and I am looking forward to having picnic lunches with Taiga.

ねじりパン Twisted Buns

 白花豆を餡子にして、ねじりパンを作りました。甘納豆は金時豆やうぐいす豆よりも、白花豆のが遥かに美味しいと思っているので、練馬駅近くの乾物屋までチャリをこいで行って買ってきました。白花豆って、随分と値段がはるのですね。普段スーパーで買うアズキ豆の倍しました。

とにかく、成果物のパンは基本的に「あんぱん」です。餡子と白パンの組み合わせなので、当然と言えば当然ですが。ひとつ工夫した点は、オーブンで焼いても生地が焦げないようにすることです。焦げると、せっかくの層が全面的に茶色くなり苦労がパアになります。

I made twisted buns with white bean paste.  I made two kinds of bean paste: strawberry flavoured, and with matcha.  The freeze-dried strawberry powder was very effective as a source of flavour.  I liked it so much that I shall be using the powder for other types of sweets in the future. One thing to note is that the buns out of the oven are not burnt and you can see the layers clearly.

四中近くの草地に着くと、利休梅が満開でした。

全体的に緑色っぽく見えるのは、

Exochorda racemosa flowers in full bloom.

花の中心が葉っぱと同じくらい緑色だから。この時期に開花すると、桜の人気に押されてあまり注目してもらえなさそうです。

帰り道、これから公園に向かう近所のゴロウと出くわしました。タイガのボーイフレンドです（タイガのボディーランゲージから明らかですが）。

On our way home, we met Goro, my neighbour's dog and Taiga's boyfriend, who was on his way to the park.  Taiga's excitement is quite obvious.

帰宅してキウイのレインボーレッドの蕾をチェック。

Back home, my red-fleshed kiwi's flower buds are growing well.

暑いのでタイガがいつでも涼しい家の中に戻れるように玄関ドアを開けたままにしています。蚊が出る前のほんの短い期間にこれをしますが、一旦蚊が発生するとフィラリア予防のためにどんなに天気が良くても外に出しません。いつも5月からフィラリアの薬を飲ませはじめます。

I keep the front door ajar this time of the year, since it is too warm outside.  This way, Taiga can come back inside anytime she wants to, but this is possible only during the short period before mosquitos being to appear.

洗濯物を干すのに2階に出たら甘い香りがしました。星タンゴールの開花が始まっています。

'Hoshi Tangor' already starting to flower.  This plant is kept away from other citrus plants and, thanks to that, its fruits have no seeds every year.  In any case, this is the only citrus tree in my neighbourhood in bloom - not even my other citrus plants are anywhere near ready.

単独で咲くので今年も種無しの実になりそうです。鉢植えでも大きな実がなるし、食味は最高の品種です。

去年の11月に種を蒔いたキーライム（マナオ）を鉢上げしました。ちなみに、写真下のほうに写り込んでいる黒いビニールポットのは、先日届いたバタフライピーの種を蒔いた一部です。

Little Key Lime plants from the seeds of fruits that I used in November last year.

発芽後の初年度なので、今年の成長は本葉が数枚で終わるかもしれません。

As this is the first year after germinating, they may not grow much this year, but they can if they want to in the large pots.

公園で At the park

 昨日につづいて今日も良い天気でした。公園の桜は日ごとにガクが目だってきていますが、青空を背景にすると何だかシアワセな気持ちになります。珍しく私のコンデジで明るい写真が撮れました。

We are enjoying a warm and dry spell right now.  Even though the cherry blossoms are almost gone, seeing the branches against the blue sky gives me happy feelings.

さっそくタイガに指示をしてポーズを取らせようとしましたが、

直ぐに飽きて、これ見よがしにリードを咥えて暴れ始めました。まあ、和犬ですので..... ひいき目に言えば独立心が強い、洋犬との比較で言えば飼い主の要求を理解する気も無い。

she got bored immediately, and started playing with the leash.  A typical Japanese dog - doesn't want to be told what to do.

この広場にソメイヨシノが植えられたとき、品種違いが１本混ざっていたようです。この白い花が咲く木はソメイヨシノより遅く咲いて、花の後は100%に近い自家受粉で真っ黒いサクランボが成ります。結構美味しい実なので、毎年ひそかに楽しみにしています。

This cherry tree with white blossoms is an odd one out.  When they planted Somei Yoshino cherry trees some 15 years ago, the supplier must have made a mistake.  This tree actually produces cherries, and a profuse amount of cherries every year at that, while Somei Yoshino is basically a flowering variety.

ソメイヨシノとの比較。

The pink tree in the background is Somei Yoshino.  When the cherries of this white tree become ripe, they attract lots of wild birds.

There are also several crab apple trees in this park.

リンゴの蕾を見ると、ほのぼの気分になります。

I love watching the flower buds of apple trees - they make me happy and optimistic for no reason.

うちではエビネの蕾が出始めました。この苗は３年くらい前にオクで買った、香りのあるエビネ、しかも黄花・素芯です。左の小さいほうは葉っぱがまだ開いていないけど、上からのぞき込むと蕾が確認できます。

Back at home, some Ebine orchids are starting to show flower buds.  This one is supposed to be a deep yellow flower variety (first time flowering this year) with a fragrance which is very rare.

この苗は、エビネ専門の育苗業者から紫色のコオズ系ニオイエビネを買ったときに、札落ちした小さな苗がオマケで送られてきたものです。育苗者でさえ何色の花なのか分からない苗なので、開花を見るのがワクワクです。

This plant is also flowering for the first time this year.  It came as a free gift, when I bought another fragrant Ebine, and even the grower did not know the colour of flowers.

今日届いた種。前から育ててみたかったものです。東南アジア原産のバタフライピー、またはチョウマメの種。花は生または乾燥させてお茶として飲みます。花びらの青い色にはポリフェノールがあり、アンチエイジングなどの効能があるそうです。

Seeds of butterfly peas arrived today.  I have never grown them before but the flowers seem to be quite useful as a herb.

袋から出してみると、意外と大きい種です。マメ科植物は移植を嫌う印象なので、鉢に直まきする予定ですが、半分は一晩ぬるま湯に漬けておき、それが影響あるかどうかも実験したいです。
