冬棗のその後 More about Winter Jujube

 ナツメは高温・乾燥の天気が大好き。第一節と第三節に出始めた恒常的な枝が、ここ２日間で目を凝らさなくても見えるほどに育ちました。来週は毎日の最高気温が35℃以上の予報なので、さらに元気に新梢が伸びるでしょう。

それにしても、ひと節ごとに一年限りの枝がこんなに数多く出るのは、うちにある他の品種には見られません。大抵は、恒常的な枝の他に3本くらいの一年限りの枝が出ています。

Jujube trees love heat and dry weather.  The permanent branches that started budding a few days ago have been growing and now I do not have to strain my eyes to recognise their existence.  The weather forecast for next week is dry with the maximum temperature exceeding 35℃ every day.  So, the new buds should grow even faster.

What amazes me about this winter jujube plant is the fact that each node has so many non-permanent branches coming out - something I have not seen in other varieties I have.  Mostly, a node gets around 3 non-permanent branches in addition to the permanent branch.

第二節の膨らみが膨張し始めて、茶色の殻の中から浅緑色が現れてきたので、そのうち芽吹くでしょう。

The second node is getting slightly bigger.  It used to be covered with brown skin, but now light green is becoming more predominant.  Hopefully, we will see a bud breaking out soon.

夕方散歩で公園へ向かう途中、落とし物らしきものが民家の塀の上に置かれていました。

On our way to the park for evening walk, I saw something looking like a lost item, placed on the side of a private house.

何とも可愛らしい小さな、小さな帽子です。この辺りは、若い母親が保育園児以下の幼い子供を自転車のチャイルドシートに乗せて移動するのが普通。忙しい中を自転車で走るので、子供が帽子や小さな荷物を落としても気づかずに走り続けることがよくあります。この帽子の小さなサイズから、帽子が外れたことを即座に母親に伝えられないほど幼い子供かもしれません。

It is an extremely tiny hat looking really cute.  In our district, young mothers usually carry their infants on a so-called 'child seat' mounted on the bicycle.  Typically, the young mom is busy, and in a hurry, and quite often she does not notice if the child loses a hat or drops a small item.  Judging by the size of this hat, the wearer is too young to be able to alert her mom about what happened.  I hope she will get it back soon.

夕方の公園。今朝この草地は草刈りのために封鎖されていたのですが、今は刈っぱなしの草が乾燥して干し草のような臭いを放っています。

At the park.  When we passed by this field this morning, it was closed to the public for grass cutting.  Now, the leftover of cut grass has been left in the sun and smell like hay.

公園へ来る途中の道で、若い女性に止められて色々 甲斐犬やタイガについて質問されました。タイガが12歳と聞いて、「全然そう見えないほど若い」と言われました。お世辞でも嬉しい。これからも元気で行こうね。

On our way here, I was stopped by a young woman who asked me about Taiga and the Kai breed.  When she heard that Taiga was 12 years old, she was surprised saying that Taiga looked much younger.  She may have been just polite for taking up our time, but it was nice to hear.  I want Taiga to stay happy and healthy.

リンゴ苗にハダニ Spider Mites on Apple Trees

 リンゴの葉っぱが、気づくとかなり減っていました。

I was not aware until this morning how much the apple trees had lost their leaves.

しかもハダニだらけ。ハダニって、雨の間はおとなしくしているのかと思っていたら、今朝みてびっくり。それとも、台風のあとの熱風で急激に繁殖した？とにかく葉っぱの裏をみて愕然としました。

Moreover, many of the leaves had spider mites underneath.  I thought spider mites were not active during rainy days, so I was really taken by surprise this morning.  Or, did they multiply explosively in the hot and dry air, once the typhoon was gone?

農薬は使いたくないので、自家製のものに初挑戦。Youtubeでは身近な自然素材で作る溶液に関するビデオが色々あるので、そのうちのひとつを自己責任で真似してみました。

I did not want to use chemical treatment.  Having watched many videos on Youtube about how to combat spider mites with natural solutions, I chose one of the methods - if it does not work, I will bear the consequence.

スプレーしたあと30分以降にシャワー水で溶液を洗い落すそうですが、その前にどんな状態なのかチェック。ハダニがスプレーする前よりもベターッと葉っぱに着いていて、「参りました」と言っているような外観です。自然素材のスプレーは耐性がつかないので毎回同じもので大丈夫だと思いますが、次回は違うレシピを試すのが今から楽しみ。

The video advised me to wash the solution off with shower after half an hour.  Before doing so, I wanted to see how the leaves looked.  The spider mites seem to be glued to the leaf, compared to the way it was before spraying, almost to say, "You got us".  This was fun.  

With natural solutions, I hear you do not have to worry about spider mites building resistance.  If so, I could use the same thing every time.  However, I am curious to see the effect of other natural solutions, so I will try a different mixture next time.

台風到来の前から、タイガは獣臭を放っていました。今日は久しぶりに晴れたので、午後にシャンプーしました。自然乾燥の散歩で公園へ。高温乾燥の空気のなかを歩いているうちにアンダーコートの抜け毛が浮き上がってきて、体の周りが白っぽく見えます。
Taiga was beginning to smell like a wild animal even before the start of the typhoon No. 5.  Since it was a sunny day today after so many rainy days, I shampooed Taiga in the afternoon.  We then left for a walk in the park.  As we were walking in the hot and dry air, the loose hair of her undercoat started surfacing.  As a result, her contour looks white.

数日ぶりの公園の草地で満足そうな顔です。３時台という中途半端な時間帯なので知り合いのワンコには会えませんでしたが、ウキウキした様子。
Taiga looking content, sitting on the cool grass after several days.  We were there between 3-4 p.m., too late for lunch walk and too early for evening walk, so we did not see any familiar faces.  Nevertheless, she looked happy all the time.

このあと私にはタイガにドライヤーとブラシをかける作業が残っているので、早く家に帰りたかったのですが、頑として動きませんでした。段々と頑固ばーさんになりそう。

My job was not finished yet - I had to give her dryer and brushing at home after that.  So, I wanted to go home, but she refused to budge.  Taiga is becoming a stubborn old lady?

ミニトマトが豊作 Cherry tomatoes in abundance

 台風の雨でバルコニーに出られないでいるうちに、ミニトマトがどんどん色づいていました。完熟が分かるのか、野鳥が突いた痕のあるものも数個ありました。

トマト栽培は久しぶりですが、実験したいことがありました。ある人のブログによると、ベランダでトマトの枝を紐で括り付けながら育てたら、千個以上採れたという記事をみたので、私もやってみることに。ただし、実の数を数えるという几帳面なことはしません。同時にもう一つの実験も兼ねています。JAで200円の苗を１本買ってきて以来、元肥なしの庭土で、例の自家製液肥だけで育てています。液肥は、草むしりで出たゴミや台所の生ごみをバケツの水に漬けて発酵させたものです。「発酵」と言えば聞こえが良いですが、現実は腐敗臭がものすごいです。バケツにきっちりフタをしておくことで普段は臭いませんが、水やりのときは要注意です。トマトとナツメ苗の水やりが終わるころには、服に臭いが染みついたのでは、と思おうほどキツイ。不思議なことに毎日やっていても肥料焼けはおこしません。なので雨天以外の毎朝、臭い思いをしています。その成果がこれ。

The typhoon rain has prevented me from taking care of the cherry tomato plant.  Meanwhile, the fruits have been ripening steadily.  Some of them have been pecked by wild birds.  

I have not grown tomatoes for several years, but I wanted to carry out an experiment.  I saw an article on a blog which claimed that the blogger harvested more than 1,000 tomatoes by growing the plant on his balcony, with branches tied by strings to the balcony railing instead of using sticks as props.  However, I am not going to count my tomatoes - I am not that meticulous.  Concurrently, I am carrying out another experiment, i.e. to see the effectiveness of home-made liquid fertiliser.   When I bought a tomato plant at 200 yen (less than US$1.5), I planted it using the garden soil without adding any fertiliser.  Since then, I have used only the home-made liquid fertiliser, and it seems to have worked wonderfully.  The only problem is the smell.  I keep the lid tight and there is no problem, until I come to use it when watering the plants.  The smell is so strong that, by the time I finish watering, I feel that the smell has seeped into my clothes.  In spite of the strong smell, none of the plants have shown signs of fertiliser burn though I use it every day.

スモモのハニーハートが１個落ちていました。鉢植えなので小粒、かつ毎年数個しか生りませんが、とても好みの味です。この品種は「旬の食材百科」というサイトによると、ソルダムと鹿児島県の在来種である「西田」を交配した実生から選抜したものだそうです。酸味が少ないので、とても食べやすいです。

I found a Honey Heart plum fallen on the ground.  I am growing the plant in a pot, so the fruit tends to be small, and it does not produce many fruits.  Nevertheless, I really like the taste of this cultivar.  It is sweet enough with low acidity.

糖度計によると14.4%でした。前出のサイトによると、ハニーハートの糖度は11～15度だそうで、今日の糖度はその範囲内でした。

According to my saccharimeter, the sugar content was 14.4%.  The sugar content of Honey Heart is expected to be 11-15%, so this fruit is well within the scope.

冬棗に恒久的な枝 Winter Jujube permanent branches

 今日は朝散歩中に急に大雨が降り出して急いで帰りました。その後も台風５号の雨が断続的に降って、一日中ジメジメした空気でした。

でも、暖かい雨は恵の雨でもあります。２週間以上前に届いた冬棗の苗には、一年限りで落ちてしまう枝しかついていなかったので、本当に今年中に恒久的な枝が出るのか心配していました。それが、４,５日前から節が膨らみ始めたようなので期待していたところ、２日前から新芽の動きが見えました。それでも昨日の夕方時点では一年限りの枝しか確認できない状態でした。ところが、今朝起きて見たら遂に恒久的な枝が第一節と第三節に出ていました。

Due to the typhoon No. 5, it started raining hard when we were out for a morning walk, and we rushed back.  It kept raining on and off all day, and apart from the living room, the air was wet in the corridor and other rooms without the air conditioner's dehumidifier on.

On the bright side, the warm rain is nurturing.  The winter jujube plant that arrived more than 2 weeks ago had, at the time, no permanent branches whatsoever.  I was getting worried that I might not see one during this season.  However, I began to see slight changes in some of the nodes after the recent showers.  Nevertheless, as of yesterday evening, there were only non-permanent branches.  But, this morning, I was happy to see a permanent branch in each of the first and the 3rd node.

For ease of explanation, let us call them Nodes 1 to 3.

第一節：節の中央の緑色が濃い部分、長さ１cmほどの太い枝が出ています。その右へ伸びた一年限りの枝には、

Node 1:  Can you see the darker new growth at the centre of the node?  It is only about 1cm as yet.  Also, the non-permanent branch stretching to the right 

小さな蕾がついています。

has a few flower buds already.

第二節：ここ２,３日で動き出したのは2本の一年限りの枝のみ。その付け根には丸い膨らみがあるので、そのうち恒久的な枝が出ると予想しています。

Node 2:  Within the last few days, only 2 non-permanent branches came out.  However, there is a round lump at the base of these new branches, which I think houses a permanent branch.  Hopefully, it will start developing soon.

第三節：芽が出たばかりの一年限りの枝の根元から出ている、太い新芽が恒久的な枝です。

Node 3:  The thick new growth next to the fresh non-permanent branches is the permanent branch.

これで一安心。とにかく恒久的な枝が出ないことには木の成長が有りえません。

I feel relieved to find these new buds.  Without permanent branches, there is no growth for the tree.

苗が届いたときにテープが巻かれていた部分に、雨が降るまえ新たに清潔な接ぎ木テープを巻いておきました。融合点の一部が若干  離剥しそうだったので、雨水やホコリが入り込まないようにするためです。あの接ぎ木テープは値段が高いけど、接ぐこと自体だけでなく、穂木などを保護する効果が高いと思っています。

Before the rain, I put a strip of fresh grafting tape on the fusion point.  The fusion did not look perfectly matched, and I did not want rain or dust to get into the gap.  The particular grafting tape we use in Japan is not cheap, but it is effective not only for grafting purpose itself, but also for protecting any exposed parts or bruises.

夏は八重花マツリカの季節。ジャスミンの香りがとても良いので、紅茶に入れて楽しんでいます。咲いた花のほとんどは冬まで冷凍保存して貯めておきます。冬の惨めなほど寒い夜にジャスミンティーを飲んで、夏の暑かった時期を思い出しながらほっこりします。

It is the season of Jasmine flowers.  I enjoy their fragrance by adding a flower to the pot of black tea.  I preserve most of the flowers in the freezer.  When I drink the fragrant jasmine tea at night in the middle of miserable winter, I remember the hot summer days and feel comforted.

冷凍する前に綿の布に広げて、雨水を取り除きました。

Before freezing them, I spread today's pickings on a piece of dry cotton cloth in order to remove rain drops.

朝散歩 Morning Walk

 台風５号が近づいているので、今日は朝からどんより曇っていました。しかも吹く風は生暖かくて、いかにも台風がらみの風です。公園入口の林は天気のせいか人影もなし。

Typhoon No. 5 was approaching Tokyo, and the sky was overcast this morning.  Also, the breeze was warm and humid, typical of typhoon related winds.  When we arrived at the park, there were very few people, probably due to the weather.

林を通って上のほうの広場を目指します。

We walked through the woods, heading for the higher ground.

上の広場に着いても貸し切り状態。

At the top of the hill, the field was also deserted.

写真の奥（中央）に写っているアオギリの大木が、暗い空を背景にドラマチックです。

The tall tree at the back (or, centre) is Firmiana simplex, and it looks dramatic against the background of dark and heavy clouds.

孤高の木で、清々しいです。

This solitary tree is so attractive.

左手の林には栗の木があります。

Among the woods on the left, there is a chestnut tree.

柴栗よりも更に野良タイプの栗で実は利用できませんが、観賞価値はあります。

This tree seems even less cultivated than wild chestnut trees - most of its nutshells are empty.   However, this tree is quite ornamental.

その栗の木の横には、やはり食用にはなり得ないような野良タイプの柿の木もあります。

Next to the chestnut tree is a persimmon tree.  This one is also a wild type, with the fruits being hardly edible.

実を食べたことがあるという人の話では不味くはなかったそうですが、完熟状態でも豆柿のように小さいです。でも、公園に植わっている木なので、実用の果樹よりは観賞用の木が合っているとも言えます。

According to a person who has tasted it, it was not too bad, but even as a mature fruit, it is as small as a golf ball.  However, in a park, it is sufficient to have ornamental fruit trees, rather than real, cultivated varieties which require a lot of looking after.

公園からの帰り、うちの近くまで来たところで、近所の紀州犬ウメちゃんに会えました。ウメちゃんはタイガより１歳下ですが、デリケートな体質で、暑い気候はとくにキツイらしいです。でも、お尻と尻尾の毛が再生してきたようで、前回会ったときよりは元気に見えます。

When we were nearly reaching home, we ran into Ume, our neighbour's Kishu Ken.  She is one year younger than Taiga but has delicate constitution, and a hot climate is particularly bad for her.  Still, compared with how she looked the last time we saw her, her fur seems to have grown back a little on her buttocks and tail.

タイガを見て、嬉しそうにかつ静かに近づいてきました。

When she saw Taiga, Ume approached her with a smile and quiet manner.

タイガはそっけない態度をとっているのではなく、ウメちゃんが最初から臭い嗅ぎ優先で近づいてきたので、それに合わせているだけです。

Taiga does not mean to be aloof.  She saw Ume determined to take a sniff, so she allowed her to do as she pleased.

散々臭いチェックして、

満足したようです。

Ume looked satisfied.

帰り道を一緒に歩いて、うちの前に到着。

We walked back together, until we arrived at our house.

ウメちゃんはかなりお疲れのようですが、自宅まであと20メートルほどなので頑張って。家の中に入って間もなく雨が降り出したのでラッキーでした。

Ume looked exhausted, but she had to exert herself just for another 20 meters or so. 

It started raining soon after we got inside, so we were very lucky.
