公園で At the park

 今朝は大幅に寝坊したのでドッグランへは行かずに四中横の草地をブラブラ歩いていました。そこを通りかかった初対面の子。ラブラドゥードルとビションフリーゼのミックスだそうで、名前は「ポンズ」君、もうすぐ１歳になる男の子です。

物怖じしない性格の子で、タイガとプロレスが始まりました。最初はポンズ君ママと一緒に楽しく眺めていたのですが、延々と続きそうなので途中からカメラを出しました。なのでいきなりタイガがアゴでポンズ君を抑えつけているところ。

A new face: Labradoodle and Bichon Frize mix, named 'Ponzu'.  He will be one year old in a few days.  Ponzu and Taiga started wrestling and his mom and I were at first just watching it, encouraging the whole time.  As it seemed to go on forever, I took out my camera and started taking pictures. Thus, they are already in the thick of it.

そこへ近所のコタロウが到着。タイガは急に態度を変えて甘えモードです。

There arrives Kotarou, my neighbour's Labrador-Shiba mix.  Taiga suddenly changes her demeanour and behaves like a young girl.

13歳のコタはシッポを上げて強気。

ポンズ君は難なくコタと挨拶できました。ポンズ君はドッグランを積極的に利用しているそうなので、犬社会のマナーをしっかり身につけているようです。

Ponzu is a frequent user of the dog park and seems to know how to behave in front of an older, large male dog.

ポンズ君に敬意を表してもらってコタも満足そうです。

帰宅して昼ごはんの後に退屈顔のタイガ。私は甲斐犬のこの光の当たりかたが最も気に入っています。何とはなしに侘しい雰囲気。

去年の暮から庭仕事をさぼっていたので、今日こそはと外に出ました。タイガは家の中がよほど退屈らしく、すっとんで出てきます。私がオレンジの木の剪定や放置してあった切り枝を束ねている間、働きぶりを監督。

I had a lot of unfinished work in my garden since autumn last year and decided to tidy up the cut branches, with Taiga watching my work.

昨日やっと植えつけたラズベリーのルビービューティー苗。新品の９号菊鉢です。

The new raspberry plants (Ruby Beauty, aka, Shortcake) that arrived a few days ago.

作業にかなり時間がかかったので、またしても退屈したタイガは門の手前にうずくまって道行く人たちを眺めていたようです。5時近くにやっと作業を終えて近づくと、このぶりっ子（死語）顔で私を見上げました。私に対するこの表情の効果をよーく知っているタイガです。

When I finally finished my work, I noticed Taiga sitting close to the gate - she was watching the world go by from her position.  Many of my neighbours, when they pass by, talk to Taiga and she enjoys her popularity.  Now she is looking up with a forlorn face - she is well aware of the effect it produces on me.

まるでこの上なく不幸な身の上のワンコを演じています。それにしても、何で地べたにうずくまるのか？

She looks like an abandoned, saddest pooch in this entire world, curled up on the ground.  By the way, ever heard of 'personal hygiene'?

ブラッドオレンジのパンナコッタ Panna Cotta with Blood Orange

 ブラッドオレンジのモロは、栽培農家のサイトによると日本での収穫は２月中旬以降、とのことです。でもうちのは先日の雪で果肉が傷んでいるような気がします。薄皮をむいた状態の実は、細胞の一つ一つに弾力性が少ないです。

そこで、早めの利用。イタリアの伝統的なスイーツ、パンナコッタに使いました。パンナコッタは「パンナ→生クリーム」「コッタ→煮る」という意味で、牛乳などは加えずに生クリームだけで作るのが正しいそうです。リッチな内容だからこそ、ほんの少量ずつの盛り付け。とは言えカロリーを考慮して、脂肪分35%のクリームにしました（いつもスイーツに使っているのは43%+）。最高に美味しいです。

My blood oranges were slightly damaged (the flesh has softened) by the recent snowfall, so I decided to harvest Moro early (Moro is said to ripen in mid-February onwards in Japan).  When made into orange sauce and topping, Moro turned into something very different and the entire result was just right. 

ラズベリー苗:ルビービューティー Raspberry Plant: Ruby Beauty

 去年の夏にルビービューティー苗を枯らしてしまいました。恥を忍んでいうと、その前の年に木酢液の原液をドバッと掛けたらたちまち衰弱していたのでした。苗は回復することなく、去年の夏までは地上部が生きていたものの、今年用の新芽が出ることなく根っこまでカラカラになって終わってしまいました。

とても気に入っていたので買い直そうとネット上で検索しても出てこなかったのが、海月ファームさんのブログ→　https://kaigetsufarm.blog.fc2.com/　で苗を買った記事が載っていました。その実店舗に電話して、昨日もう苗が届きました。昨日はスイーツの動画を撮っている最中だったので、今朝になって箱から出して日光にあてることにしました。（植えつけは明日。）

The Ruby Beauty (= Raspberry Shortcake, in the US) plant that I used to grow died out last summer (my own fault).  Since then, I have been trying to get a new one but could not find any on the internet.  Fortunately, I saw a posting in which my blog acquaintance had bought Ruby Beauty from a shop in her area in Himeji City.  So, I phoned the shop and ordered two plants just to be safe.

こちらです。生産者が同一なのか園芸ネットで買った前回の苗と同じような小苗ですが、今回のは土の量（=根っこ）が多くてずっしり重い根鉢です。

この懐かしいラベル。

随分しっかりした苗のようで、来年以降が楽しみです。

Although deciduous plants, I can tell that they are really healthy.  I am looking forward to their growth, particularly from next year onwards. 

電話で苗を注文した翌日に、以前　利用したことのある通販会社からカタログが届きました。その表紙が何とルビービューティー苗。ネットで必死に検索しても出てこなかったのに、あるところには有るものですね。

This catalogue arrived from a shop from whom I once bought a plant, the day after I placed the order with the shop in Himeji City.  To think that I could not find Ruby Beauty on the internet however hard I looked, it is amazing that there are plants available off the internet.

ゆり根 Lily Bulb

 去年オープンしたスーパーで激安の「ゆり根」を売っていました。

I found a super-cheap lily bulb in the vegetable corner of a supermarket.  Basically, there are 2 varieties of lilies that are edible in Japan - Yamayuri and Oniyuri.  I grow both but, as an amateur, I can never grow them to be such large bulbs.

立派なサイズなのにこの値段！そこで２個買って、1個は美味しくいただきました。もう１個は、試しに植えてみようと思います。多分、オニユリでしょう。

The price was 100 yen, less than $100.

As an experiment, I am going to try to grow them.  So, I washed the bulb in the garden.  This is the top of the bulb.

それを裏返しにすると、これ。下根が切られたあとも瑞々しい状態です。

ノギスで測ってみると、9.7cmくらいありました。重さもそれなりにあります。

The bulb was 9.7cm across - quite a large one.

よーく見ると、3個の明らかなヘッドがあります。下のほうのは微妙。

I could see 3 clear heads (individual bulb, potentially).

分解するにはかなり力が要りました。それほど固くてしっかりした球根でした。

So, I separated the potential bulbs to make them independent of each other.

3個のヘッドは上手く確保できましたが、ビミョーだった部分はバラバラになってしまいました。この写真は根っこ側。

この球根は何となく浅緑色の部分がありました。

I could just about see some green colour.

この球根も希望が持てる感じ。

ビミョーな部分は片鱗挿し用です。

晴れて独立した球根を10号菊鉢に植えます。10号では十分なスペースがありませんが、本当に芽が出てくるのか自信がないので、ダメ元です。菊鉢で可能な限り深植えしたら、

The pot is not large enough but this is only an experiment, since I have no confidence that I can grow lily plants from supermarket bulbs.  So, place the bulbs deep in the pot.

土をかぶせて上根用に肥料を撒きました。ユリは他の球根とは異なり、球根の下に出る根っこは地上部を支えるためのもので、栄養は上根から。

Cover the bulbs with soil, and throw in some fertiliser for the upper roots.  With lily bulbs, you get roots above and under the bulb, and it is the upper roots that absorb the necessary nutrition.

最後に上根を覆うための土をかぶせて完了。

Add more soil in order to encourage the growth of upper roots.

こちらは片鱗挿し。まったく自信ありません。

The fragments have also been planted.  This is the most common way to propagate lilies in Japan.

公園で At the park

 最近、寒いので寝坊はするわ、城北公園に向かう前に他をウロウロするわで、今日ドッグランに着いたときはもうお昼の12時近くでした。そのためランは結構すいていました。

到着して直ぐにフレンチブルドッグのホップ君が挨拶に来てくれました。

When we arrived at the dog park, it was already midday and not many dogs/people were there.  Nevertheless, Hop, a male French Bulldog, came to greet me - he is such a sweet boy.

今日もフレブルが沢山。週末は朝の比較的早い時間帯は大型犬が多いけど、お昼近くになるにつれフレンチブルドッグが増えるそうです。

この子は非常に小柄で体重が７kg台の「おはぎ」ちゃん。非常になつこい子です。

This Frenchie is a girl and quite small, weighing just above 7kg, named 'Ohagi'.

いろんな人たちの間を巡回して撫でてもらっています。

She is so friendly that she goes around to meet every person and to say 'hello'.

小さな女の子にもこうやって甘えていきます。

タイガは年をとるにつれて、初めて会う大型犬は苦手になっているようです。でも、この２頭は優しい性格だったので、慣れさせるためにタイガを呼びつけました。

As Taiga gets old, she seems to avoid large dogs with whom she is not familiar.  However, these white Retrievers were very clam and friendly so I called Taiga to meet them.

手前の子は男の子で、もう９歳だそうですが、この大型犬でこれほど状態が良いのは見事です。

The one in front is a male, aged 9, and in extremely good condition for such a large dog.

久しぶりに会う、柴犬のミオウ（美桜）ちゃん。子犬のときはハイパーな子でしたが、もうすっかり落ち着いています。

We also saw an old friend, Miou, female Shiba Inu.  She used to be such a hyperactive puppy but now she is totally grown up and quiet.

このふたりは四六時中プロレスをしながら、あちこち移動していました。黒い子はフレブルの男の子。白いほうは、ボクサーです。白のボクサーを見るのは初めてなので飼い主さんに聞いたら、白は疾患を抱える傾向があるので基本的に処分されるそうです。知りませんでした。

These two were absorbed in each other's company - a male French Bulldog, and a female Boxer.  I had never seen a white Boxer and the owner told me that she was rescued just before she was euthanised.

タイガは元々シェパードとグレートデンが苦手。公園デビューした日にパクパクやられて以来、トラウマになったようです。でも、今日ランで会ったシェパードは小柄で、体重22kgの幼い女の子だったので、呼んでみました。タイガの緊張をよそに、シェパードはボール遊びに夢中。

As a puppy, Taiga had a scary experience with a German Shepherd and since then she has avoided the breed.  However, this small GS seemed friendly enough and I wanted Taiga to meet her.  She weighs only 22kg, while Taiga weighs 25kg.

飼い主さんに、早く投げてくれとせがんでいます。

This GS was only interested in her toy which her owner threw for her.

シェパードの子がボールを追いかけている間、この子を気に入ったフレンチの男の子が遊んでほしくて追い回しています。

While the GS was chasing her toy, a male French Bulldog kept stalking her.

シェパードがボールを口に加えても、フレブルはそれがほしい訳ではないので

When the GS had her toy in her mouth, the Frenchie was not interested in it.

とにかく追い回すだけ。

He just wanted to follow her.

帰宅途中の屋敷林では、まだ残っている大実柚子の実にメジロの群れが集まっていました。メジロは春の繁殖期前までは群れで暮らすようで、まとまって観察することができます。

On our way home, we walked through the privately owned woodland where a Yuzu tree still had some fruits.  Japanese White Eyes were busy feasting on the citrus fruits.

ただし、写真ではどこにいるのか分かりません。あまりにも小さい鳥だし、色も葉っぱが保護色になります。

The White Eye is a tiny bird weighing only 11g (1/3 of a budgie), and their feathers are green, so their presence is not obvious in these photos.
