朝散歩のあとで Afrer morning walk

 今朝は良く晴れて快適な散歩でした。帰宅してローゼルの状態をチェック。花は毎朝咲いていますがその数が日ごとに減ってきて、反面ガクが目立ってきました。

Thanks to a beautiful and dry morning, we had a pleasant walk.  After coming home, I started checking the roselle plant.  I still get flowers every morning, but the number of flowers is dwindling every day.  Instead, the calyxes are becoming prominent.

ネット上で色々調べたところ、日本で流通しているローゼルは大きく分けて３種類の名で売られているようです。（1）花はピンクの花びらで赤い中心、葉っぱはモミジアオイに似た細い葉の「ローゼル　パープル」。（2）花はクリーム色の花びらに赤い中心、葉っぱは苗の下の方では３つに分かれた広葉、枝の上の方にくると一枚の広い葉の「ローゼル　レッド」。（3）花は全体が薄黄色で葉っぱはモミジアオイの「ローゼル　アイボリー」。この他に、JAでうちの苗と一緒に売られていた白い花のホワイトもあるようですが、「アイボリー」とどう違うのか分かりません。また、種の自家採取を繰り返しているうちには、ガクに先祖帰りのような現象が起きることもあるし、異なる品種を一緒に植えている場合は交雑するようです。よって、品種にこだわるなら業者が名札つきで売っている苗を買うほうが、個人が自家採取した種を買うより確かかもしれません。

うちの苗はというと、２番目の「ローゼル　レッド」に近いと思います。ガクの形が丸っこくて気に入っていますが、ひとつ難点はガクの底のツンツンした２番目のガクのようなものが緑色で厚みがないことです。利用するときその部分を切り捨てれば済むことかもしれませんが、他所の画像や動画で当該部分が肉厚で赤い例を見ると、柄から上全部が利用可能になりそうで好みです。

According to information on the internet, there seem to be mainly 3 named varieties sold by commercial growers in Japan, as follows.  (1) 'Roselle Purple': pink petals with read centre, and leaves are narrow like those of Hibiscus coccineus.  (2) 'Roselle Red': cream-coloured petals with red centre, and the leaves are broad at the lower part of the plant with 3 fingers, but at the higher part the leaf does not part.  (3) 'Roselle Ivory': light yellow petals and centre, and leaves are narrow like Hibiscus coccineus.  In addition, there might be a variety called 'White' - this was sold at the nearby JA along with the plant I bought.  Also, the characteristics may change and revert to ancestors as you repeatedly use your home-grown seeds.  Further, if you grow more than one variety in the garden, they may cross pollinate and the next generation may look different from what you thought you had.  Therefore, if you are fixed on getting a particular variety, it may be safer to buy a young plant from a commercial grower, rather than buy home-grown seeds on the net from individuals.

As to my roselle plant, it looks very much like the second variety, 'Roselle Red'.  I love the round shape of the calyx.  I only wish that the pointy collar at the base of the calyx were also red and meaty.  Instead, it is green and thin.  Now, I have seen images of calyxes with fat and red collar, which looks more appetising.

門を開けて合図をしたとたん、狂ったように家の前を往復して走りました。走り過ぎるタイガの背中にタッチすると私の勝ち、というゲームを毎回します。

The moment I opened and signed to her that she was free to do what she wanted, Taiga started her insane running in front of our house.   If I touch her body as she runs past me, it means I won - a game she loves.

坂の上から自転車に乗った人が来たので、中へ呼び戻してゲームは終わり。さすがに12歳ともなると指示に従います。

A person on a bicycle appeared at the upper end of the slope, so I called her back inside which ended the game.  At 12 years old, she at last obeys my commands.

散歩 Walks

 今朝の散歩は地元住宅街を歩きました。秋らしく祭りや催しが行われる時期です。これは隣町の江古田での芸術祭を宣伝するポスター。行ったことがないので具体的な内容は知りませんが、江古田には武蔵野音楽大学の江古田キャンパスや日本大学芸術学部があるので、学生の街的な雰囲気があります。

We walked in our neighbourhood for this morning's walk, when we saw posters.  Autumn is the time of the year when there are festivals and events - they associate autumn with 'culture'.  This poster advertises an art festival in Ekoda which is our neighbouring town.  The Musashino Academia Musicae and the Nihon University College of Art are in Ekoda.  They probably play an active part in the festival.

こちらも行ったことのない祭り。練馬駅の北口で開催のようですが、練馬はうちから遠いので年に２,３回  渋谷園芸へ植物を見に行く程度です。基本的に人群れの中に自分を置くと、疲れる。

This poster is for the Nerima Ward Festival which will be held near the North Exit of the Nerima Station.  I have never been to this event, since Nerima is quite far from my house.  However, I do visit the large plant nursery a few times a year, near the Nerima Station, to see if they have anything interesting.

　公園の萩よりも花着きが良いので綺麗です。

This bush has more flowers than those in the Johoku Park, so it may be a cultivated variety.

タイガがまた獣臭を放っていたので午後にシャンプーして、その後は自然乾燥の旅で城北公園へ向かいました。台風が接近しているわりには良い天気です。

Taiga was getting smelly again, so I shampooed her in the afternoon.  We then headed for the Johoku Park to get her coat dry in the sun.  Considering that a typhoon was approaching the Kanto Region, the weather was sunny and dry.

昨日の子猫を朝散歩中に初めて見たときは、このあたりで向こう側の乾いた川底にいました。台風で増水すると逃げようがありません。対岸の地下には調整池の第１期が完成済みで、川底の脇の塀のような部分を超えるほどの増水があると、地下の調整池に収容される仕組みのようです。

When I first saw the kitten during yesterday's morning walk, it was somewhere along this stretch of dry riverbank, on the opposite side.  When the typhoon hits Tokyo, the water level will rise, and the kitten would have no chance of survival.  This is the First Phase of the underground adjustment reservoir to cope with floods, that has been completed recently.  If the flood water overflows above the fence, it will be accommodated by the adjustment reservoir which is 30 metres deep in the ground.

林の手前の草刈りがされたあと、刈り取った草はそのままなので、歩いていると蒸れた臭いがします。本物の芝生でこれをやったら茶色く腐ってしまいそうですが、ここの芝生はもうイネ科の雑草に駆逐されているので、その雑草は数回雨が降れば復活してきます。

After they cut the grass at last, they left the hay behind, and in the warm air, the hay was beginning to smell.  If they did this with genuine lawn, it would turn brown and die.  However, lawn has long been driven out by the tough wild grass which will come back after a few rains.

公園上のほうのイチョウ並木を歩いていたら、珍しい実の付き方をしているイチョウの木が1本ありました。

As we were walking along the avenue of ginkgo trees, I saw one ginkgo tree with strange clusters of fruits.

これです。まるでブドウの房のように塊りで実がついています。

Normally, ginkgo fruits (nuts) are spread out over the tree, but on this tree, they grow in clusters like grapes.

今日は湿度が低めだったので、タイガの毛がよく乾きました。帰ってから仕上げのドライヤーを掛けますが、その前にオヤツ休憩。

Today's humidity was relatively low, and Taiga's coat got dry nicely.  I will give her coat a final dry at home, but before heading home, a treat break.

現在12歳5か月。口の周りが白くなってきています。それでも、毛ヅヤが良いと、散歩中によく褒められます。

Taiga is now 12 years and 5 months old, and her face is getting white around the mouth, showing her age.  Nevertheless, people often remark on her shiny coat.

最近の雨であちこちの草地でキノコが生えています。

After recent rains, we see large white mushrooms springing out in fields.

ググってみたら、「オオシロカラカサタケ」の写真がこれらと似ていました。もし本当にそれなら毒キノコだそうで、もう二度と指先で触ったりしません。

By searching on the internet, I came across the photos of Chlorophyllum molybdites, and the description said that it was poisonous.  I will never touch them again with my fingers.

紀州犬ウメちゃん Ume, the Kishu

 今朝は湿度が高くて朝散歩を早めに切り上げようとして歩いていたら、公園のベンチで休んでいる紀州犬ウメちゃんに会えました。うちとウメちゃんの家は30メートルほどしか離れていませんが、暑い季節はお互い外出を最小限に抑えているので、あまり会えません。

After last night's rain, it was a muggy morning, and we turned back to go home earlier than usual, when we saw Ume, a female Kishu ken, and her mom resting at a bench.   She lives only about 30 metres away from our home.  However, in summer months, we do not go out unless necessary, which reduces our chances of running into each other.

ふたりの挨拶は、いつ見てもタイガのほうが緊張しています。ウメちゃんはタイガよりも１歳年下ですが、むしろタイガを検査するような姿勢です。

When these two meet, it is Taiga who stands to attention.  Ume is one year younger than Taiga, but her posture is as if inspecting Taiga.

タイガは耳を後ろに倒し、緊張してジッとしたまま。対して、ウメちゃんの耳は前を向いています。

そのうちウメママが「オヤツ」と言ったので、ふたりは大喜び。

オヤツが終わると、ウメママがカメラを出してタイガをパチリ。ウメちゃんはオヤツの後は、「どうでもいいや」と言わんばかりにそっぽを向いています。

After the treat session, Ume's mom took out her camera and started taking Taiga's photos.  Ume is no longer interested in what goes on, once she has had her treat.

ウメママがシャッターを押しながらおだてるので、すっかりモデル気分のタイガ。しっかりウメママと視線を合わせています。

休憩のあとは一緒に帰宅しました。

As she presses the camera shutter, Ume mom showers Taiga with praises which makes her feel like a super model.  Taiga's gaze is fixed on Ume mom.

After the break, we headed home together.

朝散歩 Morning Walk

今朝の散歩のときから、今にも降り出しそうな空模様でした。石神井川近くの岐路にあるアパートのミカンの木は、毎年鈴なりです。ここは将来、平和台と池袋を結ぶ幹線道路上に位置するので、写真に写っている両側の建物の全てが取り壊されてしまいます。どの建物にも部分的にまだ人が住んでいるようですが、あたりの建物は時代の変化に飲み込まれていくような印象です。

The sky was threatening since the time of morning walk.  Growing next to an old apartment building near the Shakujii River, there is a tangerine tree that produces lots of fruits every year.  This building stands at a crossroad which will be swallowed up by a major road connecting a nearby town (Heiwadai) and Ikebukuro in the future.  As a result, the buildings shown in this photo will all disappear in a flow of times.

This is the tangerine tree.

ミカンの木は誰にも世話されなくても元気で、実が色づくと野鳥のエサの宝庫になります。

No-one takes care of this tree, but it remains robust and provides abundance of food to wild birds in late autumn.

赤い星で示した点が、上のアパートの位置。黄緑の帯が道路建設のために収用され、既にアスファルト敷きになっている部分です。

今朝のタイガは、またしても石神井川沿いを城北公園とは逆方向に歩きました。前にも土曜日の朝に会った、ビーグルとパグのミックス犬、ココ君に会えました。ココ君はタイガよりも私の手提げを見ながら興奮して近づいてきます。

This morning again, Taiga wanted to walk along the Shakujii River in the opposite direction to the Johoku Park.  We ran into Coco, the male Beagle-Pug mix that we saw a few weeks ago on a Saturday morning.  Coco is interested in what is in my bag, rather than Taiga.

一応タイガとも挨拶したら、

やはり私の手提げが気になる。でも、ココ君もタイガもダイエットのリバウンド中なので、今朝はオヤツなしにしました。

he came to me, looking at my bag.  Unfortunately, both Coco and Taiga are in the middle of a rebound in dieting, so I resisted.

しょうがないので、ワンコたちは挨拶のし直し。

Coco went back to Taiga to greet properly.

飼い主さんは土曜日も仕事なので、時間が許すまで一緒に歩きました。オヤツは、また今度ね。

Coco's mom has to go to work on Saturdays, and we walked together as far as her time allowed.  Coco will have to wait till another meeting to get a treat.

石神井川沿いに咲いているヒガンバナ。うちの赤花のはもうとっくに終わっていますが、ここのはまだ頑張っています。

The red spider lilies on the bank of the Shakujii River are lingering.  Mine have already finished for this season.

＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝

帰宅したあと雨が降り出しました。赤花ヒガンバナは終わってしまったけど、代わって黄色の洋物リコリスが咲き始めました。

After we came home, it started to rain.  Although the red spider lilies (on the left) are gone, the Lycoris aurea has started to bloom.  

大輪、かつ花びらの幅が広くて蛍光色なので、２輪しかなくても存在感が大きいです。私の好みのハデハデ。

These are much larger than red spider lilies, with broad petals.  Although there are only two, they are very conspicuous with their fluorescent colour.

ローゼルのガクが熟し始めているようですが、どの程度なら利用してよいのかイマイチ判断できずにいます。赤いガクの底にもう一回りのガクのようなものがあります。ローゼルには色んなバリエーションがあるようで、YouTubeで見ると底の星型のガクも肉厚で赤く熟すものがあるようですが、うちのはなかなか肉厚になってこないし緑色です。

The roselle calyxes seem to be maturing, but I am not sure at what stage I can pick them.  At the base of the meaty calyx, there is a collar with pointed tips.  According to images on the YouTube, there seem to be several varieties of roselles and some of them have collars maturing as red and meaty as the main calyx.  The collars on my roselle seem to remain green and not fleshy.
