ビルベリーなど Bilberry etc

 今年の春に買ったビルベリー苗が順調に育っています。ビルベリーはブルーベリーよりも耐暑性が低いそうですが、この苗はドイツで実生選抜されたもので通常のビルベリーよりは暑さに強いというセールス文句でした。

The bilberry plant I bought in spring this year has been growing nicely.  This is a seedling developed in Germany and said to be more heat tolerant than normal bilberries.

今年ほんの少しだけ花がついていたので、実もほんの少し。実の一部にシワが入り始めているので収穫期のようです。

It had some flowers this year and I can now see a few berries that seem to be ripe enough.

これで今年の全部。実のサイズは、以前育てていたビルベリーのよりさらに小さい。

実を半割にしてみると、中まで青い。ブルーベリーだと青いのは皮だけですが、ビルベリーは果肉もアントシアニンたっぷり。

I managed to cut the tiny berry in half.  The flesh inside is blue, whereas with blueberries only the skin is blue.

半割のを食べてみたらとても甘かったので、2個目に糖度計を当ててみました。何と18.3度。プルーン並みの甘さです。来年以降、もっと生ってくれたら嬉しいです。

The sugar content was 18.3%, as sweet as prunes.

先日届いたハマナス系バラのハンザに蕾が出てきました。この苗は京成バラ園からので、大事に大事に育てていきます。

The Hansa rose that arrived recently has a flower bud!  I am so looking forward to seeing the flower.

樹高は届いたときの1.5倍くらいになっています。

The plant has grown to about 1.5 times the original size.

今朝の散歩は石神井川沿いでした。早朝でも暑いので、タイガのシッポは垂れたまま。

During summer, I get up very early but it is already hot in the sun.  This morning, Taiga chose to walk along the river.

日陰伝いに帰りました。

We headed home trying to skip from one shade to another.

カラカラ、ナバホなど Cara Cara, Navaho etc

 数年前に地植えにして以来、１個しか収穫したことのないカラカラに今年はちゃんと実が生りそうです。普通のネーブルより小ぶりだけど、ピンクの果肉はとても甘かったので楽しみです。

The Cara Cara plant with flowers starting to bloom.  This tree produced one fruit the year I planted it in the garden but, since then, no flowers at all.  So, I am looking forward to picking fruits next spring.

ブラックベリーのナバホが咲き始めました。道路側のフェンスに絡ませてあります。ケインは１本しかありませんが、東向きなので朝一の日光を浴びてよく育っています。YouTubeではスイス人のひとが、ナバホを直立形に仕立てて鈴なりにしていました。このフェンスは来年以降はハンザに利用したいので、他に移して直立式を試す予定です。

Navaho blackberry plant (just one cane) with flowers.  Unfortunately, the Osage plant died out last summer and this is the only blackberry left.

The flowers are pale pink (although they look white in the pictures) and very pretty.

数か月前にスーパーで買った２個入りのユリ根を、１個は食してもう１個は分解して鉢に植えておきました。現在一か所にだけ芽が出ています。まるでミニチュアのパイナップルのクラウン。

I planted one of the edible lily bulbs that I bought in the supermarket some months ago and now a new shoot is coming out.  It is currently looking like a miniature pineapple crown.

つい先日届いたハマナス系のハンザに蕾が出始めています。この蕾を先頭に、まだ硬い蕾が他に３つあります。

The Rugosa Hansa that arrived recently has been growing new branches and I can count at least 4 flower buds now.  I am so excited and looking forward to seeing the flowers.

私がハンザの蕾で大感激していると、退屈したタイガが寄ってきました。

As I was so absorbed with Hansa, Taiga approached me to get attention.

ワンコはブサイほど可愛い。タイガはいろんな顔で毎日私を笑わせてくれます。でも、もう少し痩せなければ。おととい狂犬病のチックンに連れて行きましたが、体重は24.9kgでした。

Taiga may not be the best looking pooch in the world, but any of her expressions are endearing to me.  However, she must slim down - I took her to the vet 2 days ago for a rabies shot and was told that she weighed 24.9kg.

ブルーベリー苗 Blueberry plants

ブルーベリー苗を買ってしまいました。うちではブルーベリーはなかなか上手く育った試しはないのですが、開花時期が合う２品種ということで結実の可能性が高いそうです。さっき届いた苗。予想していたより小さな箱でちょっとびっくりでしたが、安い苗だったので文句言えません。

Blueberry plants just arrived

 箱から出してみました。上の写真に販売元の名前が写ってしまいましたが、あの値段でこの↓苗なら文句なしです。

These are new varieties derived from North American highbush blueberries.

They were developed so as to withstand the heat of Japanese summers.

Moreoever, these 2 varieties flower at the same time.

 もう落葉期なので葉っぱが綺麗に黄葉しています。

Although small, the plants are in pretty autumn colours.

左から、小粒でも甘さが売りの「あまつぶ星」と、粒の大きさが自慢の「おおつぶ星」です。群馬県で開発された品種で、ハイブッシュ系ながらも従来のものよりは耐暑性が高いそうです。でも、鉢植え管理で真夏はヤマユリ苗のように半日陰に移動させる予定です。ブルーベリーはスイーツの用途が広いので、うちでブルーベリーを収穫できると嬉しいのですが。

 ブルーベリー入りのアイスクリームを期待してね。

業者のサイトによっては「接ぎ木苗」を謳っていますが、少なくともうちに届いた苗は株立ちの挿し木苗に見えます。
