コガネムシ対策 How to beat Japanese beetles

今年も棗の幼果がコガネ成虫に齧られています。コガネムシ退治の方法で検索すると一般的に 出てくるのは容器に食器洗剤などの石鹸系の液体を入れて、それをコガネが着いている枝の下にかざして枝を揺さぶるとコガネが容器の中に落ちて来る。石鹸水で身動きがとれなくなるということだそうです。でも、うちの棗が受ける被害は夜のうちなので時間的に困難。そこで、いまひとつの方法として、ゼラニウムがあることを知りました。複数の米国の動画で言っていたのですが、コガネ成虫はゼラニウムを喜んで食べる。食べた後 体が麻痺して下に落ちるそうで、その間に収集・処分するそうです。

ということで、近所のJAをのぞいてみたら、何と１株だけ売れ残っていました。直径9cmのビニールポット入りの割には地上部が立派なので、苗の強健さがうかがえます。ついでに小さなビニールポットも買いましたが、これは発芽したクコの鉢上げ用です。

Jujube young fruits are getting eaten by Japanese beetles, as they were last year.  When I Google how to get rid of the beetles, the most frequently cited method is to hold an open plastic bottle with soapy water under the branch with beetles, shake the branch and wait for the beetles to drop into the bottle.  The soapy water immobilises the bugs.  The problem is that my jujube fruits are getting eaten mostly during the night and I find it impractical to stand outside in the dark - I will be getting bitten by hundreds of mosquitoes.  So, I looked up on the YouTube and found several US videos introducing the idea of using geranium plants.  Apparently, Japanese beetles love geranium plants and after eating them, they become paralysed and drop onto the ground.  I do not know for how long, but I will have the easy job of collecting and 'unaliving' them.

With this idea, I went to the nearby JA, although it was not the season for geranium plants.  Amazingly, there was just one leftover geranium.  The plant was in a 9cm diameter pot, but it looked quite robust even in the sweltering heat.  I also got a pack of plastic pots for repotting the black goji berries which germinated recently.

Among all the jujube varieties, the young fruits of the 'Emperor' are getting the worst damage by beetles.

大株に育って欲しいので、鉢も余裕のサイズにしました。

Hoping that the geranium plant would grow big, I repotted it in a large pot.

ラベルによると「暑さにも負けない」品種だそうです。

According to the label, this variety is quite heat tolerant.

さっそく皇帝の根元に置きました。

I placed the pot next to the Emperor jujube.

皇帝は地植えにしたとたん、上へ上へと伸びてしまい、摘心した後でも樹高は2ｍ以上になっています。横枝が短くて少ないですが、考えようによっては、下のほうの枝に他品種を高接ぎすればスペースを節約できます。

I planted the Emperor jujube in the ground in spring this year.  Since then, the tree has shot up without bothering to grow side branches.  Even after pinching the top, the tree is now taller than 2 meters.  Although the side branches are short, I could use them to graft different varieties to save space.

こちらはクコ。真ん中のポットは黒クコの発芽したものです。右側のポットは新たに種まきした赤クコで、まだ芽が出ていません。黒クコと同時に発芽した赤クコは、うっかりバケツ１杯の水を一気に空けた際、水の直撃を受けてポットの中身が全部飛び出してしまいました。なので再度 種まきしたものです。

Now to the goji berries.  The pot in the middle contains black goji berries.  The pot on the right contains red goji berry seeds that I sowed recently for the second time.  The red goji 

berries that germinated at the same time as the black ones were lost when I emptied a backet of water in the dark, without noticing that there was the pot.  The whole thing was washed away.  Thus, I had to start all over.

なんとか５個を個別のポットに植え替えました。最終的に３個が育てば十分すぎるくらいです。

I managed to repot 5 of them individually.  Ultimately, if 3 of these survive and grow, that would be more than enough.

６月中旬に届いた「静浜クコ」の苗は、

今はこの状態です。門の横の壁の上に置いて、陽当たり・風通しを確保しています。以前は地面の上に置いていましたが、ウドンコ病にかかったのでここに移動させて解決しました。

this is how they look now.  I keep the pots on top of the wall next to the gate, where it is sunny and there is plenty of air movement.  When I used to keep them on the ground, the plants became mildewed.  Moving the pots where they are now solved the problem immediately.

枸杞の発芽など Goji Berries germinating etc

 ７日前の７月３日に種まきしたクコが、もう発芽し始めました。写真左は赤クコ、右は黒クコです。どちらも多めに種を播いたので、最終的には最も勢いのあるものを３本ずつ鉢上げして育てる予定です。

I sowed seeds of red and black goji berries on 3rd July, ie, only 7 days ago, and they are already starting to germinate.  In the below photo, the container on the left is for red goji berries, and the one on the right for black goji berries.  I sowed a lot of seeds in each case so, there should be a lot more coming out.  Ultimately, I will choose 3 most robust looking plants in each case and pot them individually.

公園へ行く途中の石神井川の岸に生えていたヒルガオが気に入ったので、ツルの一部を採取して挿し木で育てました。意外と簡単でした。花は、白地にほんのりピンクの筋が入ります。

There was an unusual looking Calystegia pubescens plant on the bank of Shakujii River near the Johoku Park.  I liked it and grew this from a cutting, which was surprisingly easy to do.  Normally, the flower is pink all over, but this one is white with pink streaks.

昨日から急に暑くなり、今日の最高気温は33℃。早朝散歩から帰るとタイガは玄関タイルの上で伸びていました。

Our rainy season looks almost finished and the temperature is rising.  After returning from the walk in the park, Taiga spent most of the day lying on the cool tiles in the porch.

YouTubeで見かけたサプリを買ってみました。注文は日本の業者のサイトで行い、商品は米国から発送されるそうですが、あっと言う間に届きました。品物は、粉末ケルプです。

粉末ケルプを推奨する米国の健康オタク系チャンネルはいくつもあって、うち一つはワンコの歯垢に役立つと言っていましたが、ラベルの説明を読むと人間の大人用のみを想定しているようです。なので、タイガに与えるかどうかは、更に調べてから決めます。

I saw an interesting item on the YouTube recently and decided to try it.  The order was placed with a shop in Japan, and the product was shipped from the US.  To my amazement, it arrived rather quickly, for which I am grateful.  

I had never heard of powder kelp before.  One of the channels that particularly caught my attention said that it could help with dog's plaque.  On reading the instruction on the label, however, the product is recommended for (human) 'adults' only.  So, I will do more research before deciding on use with Taiga.

味見すると塩味の強い粉末昆布という印象です。食事と一緒に摂取するよう推奨されているので、昆布出汁を使うようなおかずに向いているかもしれません。

When I tasted the powder, it reminded me of very salty seaweed.  Since the label recommends taking it with meals, I will be using it in dishes where I would have prepared seaweed stock.  In traditional Japanese cooking, we often use seaweed stock.

ブルーベリーなど Blueberries etc

 6月14日に買ったブルーベリー苗の実が徐々に色づいてきました。手前がペリー、奥がビロキシー。

Fruits of the blueberry plants that I bought on 14th June are gradually ripening.  The plant in front is Perry, and the one at the back is Biloxi.

色づいたものの一部を採りました。バルコニーで網掛けして野鳥の心配もないので、色づいたからといって急いで収穫する必要ありません。

左側の６個がペリーで、右の６個がビロキシー。ペリーはサザン系で「最大級」の実と、ラベルに記載されていましたが、ビロキシーとあまり違いが分かりません。

I picked some of the ripened fruits.  Since these plants are protected by a net on the upstairs balcony, I do not have to hurry and pick whatever appears to be ripe.

The 6 berries on the left are from Perry, and those on the right are from Biloxi.  On the label when I bought Perry, it said that its fruits belong to the largest among Southern Highbush blueberries.  However, I do not see much difference between these two varieties.

ベリーを使ったスイーツを作りたいので、ラズベリーのジョーン・スクワイアも収穫。

Since I wanted to make sweets using berries, I picked raspberries, too.  These are on Joan Squire.

こちらはまだ頑張っているルビービューティー。栽培の場所を取らない割には沢山の実を提供してくれました。

These are Ruby Beauty (a.k.a. Raspberry Shortcake) which continues giving gifts.  Considering what little space this variety requires, it has yielded a lot of berries this year.

今日の収穫。Today's picking

冷凍ブルーベリーのスムージーを作り、それをゼラチンで固めたものです。毎日ゼリーを食べる習慣を続けているので、いとも簡単に出来上がります。

I made smoothy with frozen blueberries and then turned it into jelly with gelatin.  Since I eat a cup of home-made jelly every day, it takes me no time at all to prepare these.

玄関前に置いてある素芯オニユリが咲き始めました。

The spotless tiger lilies in front of the porch have started blooming.

普通のオニユリよりも濃い朱色の花びらです。写真では見えないですが、近くで花びらを見ると、本来黒い点々が着くところに一段と濃い朱色のポツポツがあります。

The colour of these petals is deeper orange than regular tiger lilies' with dark spots.  Actually, although difficult to tell on the photo, this variety also has spots on the petals, but they are orange of a shade darker.

静浜クコ苗 Goji berry plants

 先週の金曜日に注文した静浜クコの苗が今朝到着しました。箱を受け取った瞬間、あまりの軽さに不安を覚えたのですが、

I ordered goji berry plants last Friday and they arrived this morning.  The moment I received and held the box in my hands, I felt uneasy.

まさか、こんなに小さい苗とは。。。。

Even then, I never expected such miniscule plants!

サイトの表示では「樹高約20cm」という表示でしたが、実物は10cmあるか無いか。あまりのショックで直ぐには植え付けする気にもなれず、明日まで放置することにしました。ちなみに、静浜クコというのは大実・多収品種だそうです。

On the shop's site, it said 'plant height about 20cm', but these are barely 10cm tall.  I was so dismayed that I could not motivate myself to repot them straight away - I am leaving them until tomorrow.  For the record, this is a variety that was selected and improved from wild goji berries growing on the coast of Shizuhama in Shizuoka Prefecture.  It is said to be prolific and produce large fruits.

そんなときに元気付けてくれたのはこれ。去年の夏に練馬の渋谷園芸で買った紅筋山百合。2本のうち、色の薄いほうが今朝 先に開花しました。

At least, I had a nice surprise this morning - one of the two Red Yamayuri that I bought last summer at a shop in Nerima started blooming.  Of the two, this plant's flower has lighter red streaks.

花の香りが強烈で、玄関ドアを開けたとたんに香りが襲ってきます。

The scent is so powerful that it hits my nostrils the moment I open the front door.

もう１本のほうも２-３日中に咲くでしょう。この個体の花は、もっとはっきりした紅筋が入ります。

The other one will start blooming within the next few days.  The flowers of this plant will have darker streaks.

こちらは今年の冬の間にヤフオクで買った紅筋山百合で、ピンクの花びらに赤い筋が入るタイプです。

This is another kind of Red Yamayuri - I bought it during last winter.  The petals are pink, with red streaks running through them.

ブルーベリー苗 Blueberry plants

 朝散歩で公園からの帰り道、地蔵さんの前を通りました。

On our way home from the Johoku Park, we passed by the jizo-san statues.

通るたびに新鮮な花が供えられています。

Every time we walk by, I see fresh flowers.

今朝の花は梅雨の花のアジサイ「墨田の花火」という品種だと思います。

This morning, the flowers were mainly hydrangea.  This one is a variety called 'Sumida no Hanabi' - which evokes the image of a firework flower just opening.

お地蔵さんとは細い道を挟んだ向こうにある屋敷林に映えている株からでしょう。

城北公園は都立の公園であるのに対し、この屋敷林は元は野菜畑だったものが一般に開放されている緑地で、練馬区の管理下にあります。草刈り作業が行われるのは年に数回だけなので、今は夏草がボウボウ。小学生が登校途中にショートカットで通る、獣道のような筋がついています。

The woodland is currently overgrown with weeds.  Whereas Johoku Park is managed by Tokyo Metropolitan Government, this woodland comes under Nerima Ward.  This place used to be a farmland but now made available for the general public.  Elementary school children go through this field as a shortcut on their way to and from school, leaving a narrow trail.

実の形はフトモモ科のフルーツを連想させます。

The fruit looks like something out of the Myrtaceae family, like a guava fruit.

今日は過ごしやすい気温だったので、近所のJAを覗いてみました。そこでつい誘惑に負けたのが、これらのブルーベリー苗。ブルーベリーは過去に何度か挫折しているので、もう手を出さないと決めていたのですが、大粒の実が生っているのと値段がまた魅力的でした（税込みで1,070円）。左から、「クーパー」と「ビロキシー」。いずれも初めて聞く名前です。

Today was just the right temperature to spend outside, so I visited the JA nearby where I saw these blueberry plants and could not resist.  Now, I have tried and failed growing blueberries a few times in the past, which made me determined never to try again.  However, the berries on these plants were so large and inviting.  The price was also attractive (1,070 yen each, inclusive of tax).  So, from left to right, 'Cooper' and 'Biloxi'.  Both names are new to me, since I have been out of blueberries for so long.

今のところ、実の大きさはこちらのほうが上です。

Currently, the berries of this variety are larger than those of Cooper.

素焼き鉢に植えつけました。元の鉢が小さかったので、当分これで大丈夫だと思います。来年の３月に植え替えする予定です。
For now, I am using these clay pots which are large enough for the root system of both plants.  I plan to repot them in larger containers in March next year.
