公園で At the park

 今朝は雨雲とにらめっこしながらの散歩でした。公園へ向かう川沿いの歩道ではドウダンツツジの紅葉が始まっていました。

It was forecast to rain anytime today, so we went out for a walk all the time looking up the sky.

タイガは植物よりも他のワンコが残していった「臭い」を嗅ぐのに夢中。オス犬のように、あちこちでチビチビと上塗りのマーキングしながら歩きます。

While out, Taiga behaves like a male dog, searching for any lingering scent of other dogs' urine and marking over it.  After relieving herself first thing in the morning, she makes sure that she is left with enough to go around.

四中横の草地に着くと、久しぶりにパッチに会えました。ジャックラッセルの女の子で、現在12歳。タイガが公園デビューした頃、朝散歩でこの草地を一緒に駆け回っていました。タイガは今9歳半。お互い子犬だった時代は遥か昔でも、パッチが先輩としての上下関係はそのままです。タイガは耳をぺったんこにして挨拶。

When we arrived at the park, we saw Pacchi, a female Jack Russel Terrier.  She is 12 years old now, and Taiga 9 1/2 years.  When they were puppies, they played in this field every morning.  After all these years, they remain good friends and, what's more, their relative position is unchanged, i.e., Taiga treats Pacchi as her superior.

そこへシェルティーのメイちゃんが到着したので、パッチは早速近寄って行きました。メイちゃんは今年の５月生まれの仔犬なので、まだ耳の先端を垂れさせるための耳セットが着いています。

We were joined by May, a female Sheltie puppy born in May this year.  She still has the ear tape on.

メイちゃんの飼い主さんがオヤツを出したので、パッチとタイガが精神集中。

May's dad pulled out the treat and Pacchi and Taiga watched his hands eagerly.

先日の体重測定ショック以来、タイガはオヤツ無しの生活をしているので嬉しそう。

Taiga has been on a diet since she visited the vet's a few weeks ago and I do not give her treats any more.  So, she looked extra happy.

多田錦柚子 A new Yuzu plant

 地元JAでこれ（写真左下）を見かけて、つい、手が伸びてしまいました。

I saw this tiny Yuzu plant (bottom left) in a pot in the nearby shop and could not resist the temptation.

多田錦の、小さな小さな苗です。樹高は30cmもありませんが、粒ぞろいの綺麗な実が３つ着いています。数年前にJAで買った本柚子の30cm苗を思い出しました。

This is a seedless variety called "Tadanishiki".  The fruit is slightly smaller than the common Yuzu, but due to being seedless, what you get on the inside is almost as much as the normal Yuzu which comes with tons of seeds.

この値段に抗えませんでした。多田錦の枝は地植えのベルガモットに一枝しか着いていないので、この苗を育てて接ぎ枝を増やす予定です。もしくは、この苗でベルガモットを置き換えることも考えています。耐寒性はこちらの方が高いので、接ぎ穂のパフォーマンスは遥かに良くなるはず。ベルガモットは2月の極寒の時期は葉っぱの元気がなくなります。中間台の健康状態が、高接ぎされている他の香酸類に影響がないはずはない。また、私が下手な接ぎ方をしたので、やたら本体のベルガモットの実だらけになります。利用価値は柚子やレモンのほうが高いので、これはちょっと迷惑。

How could I resist this price?  

I used to have a stand alone Tadanishiki Yuzu plant but it grew out of control once I put it in the ground (I was a beginner in gardening then).  Now I have only one branch grafted onto the Bergamot.

以前、うちにはちゃんとした多田錦の苗があったので、その記憶では汚損果がほぼ無かったことは確認済み。対して、通常の柚子はこの↓ように、なぜかキズがつきものです。スーパーで売っている1個140円とかの本柚子は、１本の木に生った実のうち何割なのか、と不思議に思います。もしかして柚子に農薬を使ってる？

Another benefit of Tadanishiki Yuzu is that the fruits are clean, whereas the fruits of common Yuzu tend to get pock marks like these in the photo.

その本柚子苗は、元々の30cmから今ではここまで育って、モロとミネオラが高接ぎされて、それぞれ2個ずつ実が生っています。

I bought the common Yuzu as a 30cm cutting plant several years ago from the same shop.  It is now in the ground and has Moro and Minmeola grafted onto it.  So, with patience, cheap and tiny citrus plants can grow into productive trees.

もう１本、安さに惹かれて何年も前に通販で買ったのが、このトゲ無しリスボンレモン。葉っぱがほとんど無い貧相な棒苗で980円、九州からの送料のほうが遥かに高かったです。今は10号鉢ですが、来年の４月末にはタロッコが植わっていた場所に植え付ける予定です。タロッコは衰弱したので、それに高接ぎしてあったセミノールの枝がまず枯れました。

Another cheap plant was this Thorn-free Lisbon Lemon that I bought many years ago.  It has grown so well that I plan to put it in the ground in early summer next year.

このトゲ無しリスボンは、これまで育ててみて東京の冬の寒さなら平気そうなので、タロッコの跡地で大いに育ってほしいです。

Having watched this plant for many years, I know that Lisbon Lemon can withstand the coldest period of Tokyo winter with ease.  So, I am looking forward to taking care of this plant and growing lots of fruits.

そして今年の初夏に買ったこのトゲ無しリスボンも、冬を越せば来年の夏を通して育つでしょう。レモンだけは生り過ぎて困ることは無いので大切に育てます。

This tiny plant is another Thorn-free Lisbon Lemon.  Since I love cooking, I can never have too many lemons in my garden.

公園で At the park

 昨日の曇り空から一変、今日は快晴の一日でした。いつもとは違う方角から城北公園へ向いました。何週間か前にみかけた夏ミカンが色づき始めていました。集合住宅の入り口前に生えている木なので、収穫を楽しみにしている人たちがいるかも。

A beautiful morning, after a cloudy day yesterday.  We took a different route to reach the Jyohoku Park.  The fruits on the Japanese summer orange tree in front of a block of flats are turning yellow at last.

実が色づくと以前は気づかなかったものも見えてきます。奥のほうに、もう2個あります。

As the fruits started to ripen, I noticed that there were two more at the back of the tree.

陽光面でないので色づき始めたばかり。

Being in the shade, they have only just started to turn yellow.

橋を渡ると公園に到着です。

The park lies across the river.

その前に橋の上で記録写真を一枚。混合ワクチン依頼、ダイエットに取り組んでいますが、ほんの少しだけ効果が見えてきたので記録。と、思ったのに、帰宅してしゃしんを見たらベストなポーズではありませんでした。実際はもっとスリムに見えるのです。おまけに、協力する気のないタイガなので尻尾が下がっている。

Before crossing the bridge, I took a photo of Taiga.  Since a few weeks ago, she has been on a diet and I wanted to confirm with a photo - unfortunately, this was not the right angle (the tummy is not tucked in).  She is a little slimmer than this.

川を超えると涼しい林が広がります。

We crossed the river to enter the park.

久しぶりに会った巨大キャバリアの女の子。同じように巨大な「キャバ」ちゃんかと思ったら、もうひとりの子でした。

We met a female Cavalier whom we had not seen for a few years.  She is a huge specimen of Cavalier and her dad is also trying to put her on a diet.

タイガのことをあまり覚えていないのか、私にはスリスリしてきたのにタイガに対しては引いていました。

その後は林の中を散策。

We had a heavy rain 2 days ago and the trees have lost quite a lot of leaves.

甲斐犬は15-6歳くらいまで生きると言われていますが、タイガが自分の足で公園まで来られる「健康年齢」を考えると、現在の9歳半からあと何年か分からないので、なるべく沢山の思い出と写真を残したいです。そのためにも、ダイエット！

Taiga is 9 1/2 years old and she may have 4-5 years more to be able to walk to this park.  To make sure of that, I want her to lose weight so that the burden on her legs would be much less.

道を渡って別の草地へ移動。

We crossed the road to another field, where

これまた久しぶりの再会。柴犬のミオウ（美桜）ちゃんです。

we met Miou, a young female Shiba Inu, after a long time.

相変わらず朗らかな女の子。

She is a bouncy, happy girl.

タイガを遊びに誘いますが、タイガにとって弾けすぎのミオウちゃんにはタジタジ。

So bouncy that she invites Taiga to play, but Taiga was too old for that.

その後は公園上の古代家のある林へ移動。

We moved to the higher ground.

２日前の雨で葉っぱがほとんど落ちています。

Here, the deciduous trees are almost bare after the rain.

この林はこれが今年の見納めでしょう。

This is probably the last opportunity for this year.

道を渡った向こうの草地ではノムラもみじが色づいていました。

We moved to the field across the road, where a Japanese maple tree was turning red.

常緑樹を背景にすると、赤い葉が浮き立ちます。このときは風が吹いて枝が揺れていたので一層綺麗でした。

The branches were swaying in the wind, which made the leaves more attractive.

帰り道。この角度から見るとダイエット効果が現れています。さらに頑張って、背中に触ると背骨が感じられるほどになるのが目標です。そこまで行けば、脚への負担もかなり軽減されるはず。

Going home.  Taken from this angle, Taiga's diet seems to be working.

川沿いの歩道脇に映えている「寒椿」の花が綺麗です。この地域の歩道のサザンカというと、これです。花の匂いも葉っぱの形状もサザンカですが、名前は椿。

This sasanqua variety is the most commong type planted on road side or as fences, but I love these flowers.  They remind me of Hansa rose.

洋ナシのクランブルパイ Pear Crumble Pie

 今年も洋ナシが店に並ぶ季節。ラ・フランスが目玉商品で売られていたので、クランブルパイを作ってみました。クランブルパイはリンゴをフィリングに使うのが一般的ですが、洋ナシで作ると香水のような香りがして格別に美味しい。

I saw pears at a reasonable price in the shop, so I took advantage of the opportunity and made a crumble pie.  I added crushed almonds to the crumbles, and dried cranberries to the pear filling, which made a difference.
