正月用の花 Flowers for the New Year

 昨日、玄関の内外および門のところのタイルと壁を、ナイロンタワシと石鹸水でガリガリ掃除しました。その後、正月用に買っておいたピンクの寒菊を玄関前に置きました。

I am in the middle of the 'big clean' ahead of the New Year.  This is customary in Japan and I cannot welcome the New Year without doing it however I hate cleaning the house.  After scrubbing the tiles and walls of the gate and the porch yesterday, I placed the  pink winter chrysanthemum that I bought for the coming festive season.

開花を遅らせるために日陰に引っ込めてありましたが、どうやら正月まで持ちこたえそう。

This plant should be in full bloom over the New Year period.

慣れない大掃除で腰が痛いので気晴らしに地元JAを覗いてみました。数日前から気にかかっていた花がまだ有るか興味あったので。テーブルシンビジュームのピンク系です。数株あったのが、この１鉢だけ残っていました。しかも、数株あるうち私が一番気にっていた苗です。ラッキーと思って念のため周りを見渡したところ、

After the unusually hard work with the cleaning yesterday, I went to the JA this morning to look at the flowers.  I was particularly interested in the orchid I saw several days ago.  It was still there, although its siblings had disappeared from the shelf.  This is a miniature version of the normal cymbidium, called 'table cymbidium' for its size.  However, before I picked it up,

普通サイズ（大型）のシンビジュームが目に入りました。３株あるうち、背後にある苗に惹かれました。

I also saw these normal sized ones, which are quite large.  One of them, the one in the back, particularly caught my eyes.

これです。他の株は花茎が２本ずつ有るだけなのに、これは今咲いている２本に加え、蕾状態のがもう２本あって同じ2,000円です。しかも、あのテーブルシンビジュームより500円安い。あー、値段に影響されやすい私です。どう考えてもこちらの方がグッドバリューに思えてなりません。また、あのテーブルサイズのカワイイ苗だと、テレビの横で埋もれてしまうかも....

The other two plants had only 2 flower stems each, but this one has 2 stems with open flowers and, in addition, it has 2 stems with firm flower buds yet to open.  The three plants were all priced at 2,000 yen.  Considering everything, this plant seemed such a good value.  Also, compared with the 'table' one priced at 2,500 yen with only 1 flower stem, this with 4 flower stems would provide me with flowers to the end of March next year.  (The flowers of cymbidium can easily last a few months in winter.)

ということで、普通サイズの方を連れ帰りました。

So, I came home with this one.

この苗の後ろ側に蕾の花茎がもう1本あります。シンビは普通でも軽く１か月以上花が持ちますが、この苗は蕾つきがもう２本あるので、開花が全部終わるのは３月末頃でしょう。

As already mentioned, this plant has two stems with flower buds: one is obvious in the picture, and the other one is growing at the back of the plant.

部屋に入れるまえに水やり。シンビの場合、水を注ぐよりはこうやってバケツ水にどっぷりつけておくのが良いそうです。これを開花中は１週間に一度やるそうです。

Before I took the plant into the house, I placed the pot in a bucket full of water.  According to the expert on YouTube, this way of watering is recommended for cymbidium.  During the winter months, do this once a week.

水切りした後は居間へ移動。

After 1/2 hour, I took the pot into the living room.

うぅーん、ちょっとデカ過ぎたかも。でも、あのテーブルシンビだと存在感が無さすぎだったろうと思います。

Well, this plant may be a bit on the large side, but the 'table' version would have been obscured in the same spot.

豆柴子犬ケビンと With Kevin, the Miniature Black Shiba Inu puppy

 以前撮った映像がまだスマホに残っていたので、ケビンママの許可を得てビデオを作りました。

I found the footage left in my phone, which I took some time ago.  So I made this video with the permission from the owner of the Shiba puppy.

朝散歩 Morning walk

 今朝も寒いけど雲ひとつない青空で、快適な散歩でした。公園の落葉樹は、このようにまだ葉っぱが残っている木はほとんど無くなりました。

Another crispy morning with blue sky.  This ginkgo tree is one of the very few left with leaves still hanging - it really feels like winter.

初めて会ったカワイイ子。２歳のミミちゃん。犬種は聞き忘れましたが、小さなポメちゃんのようです。

A new face: tiny female Pomeranian, named Mimi, 2 years old, with a very sweet disposition.

超小型にも拘わらず全くものおじせず、のんびりした性格です。

In spite of her tiny size, she is easy-going and afraid of nothing.  

いつものルートを回ったあとは、公園出口の草地で一休み。

After walking the usual route, we sat down before leaving the park.

おやつの「マテ」をしている間、より目になっているタイガ。

Taiga's eyes look cross-eyed as she waits for the go-ahead for her treat.

帰り道、近所のゴロウとばったり出会いました。タイガはゴロウのストーカーになるほど大好きなので、ゴロウの散歩に付き合うことにしました。

On our way home, we ran into Goro, our neighbour's Shiba-Labrador mix.  Taiga likes him so much that she behaves like a stalker.  So, we decided to walk with Goro, which was a welcome extra morning walk for Taiga.

そこへ、最近公園デビューした黒い豆柴のケビンがやって来ました。ゴロウと会うのは初めて。いつものように大興奮です。以前会ったときより月齢がひとつ増えて現在生後５か月だそうです。

There came Kevin, the tiny Black Shiba Inu puppy we recently met.  He is now 5 months old and just as excitable as before.  Apparently, he has had several encounters with other older dogs who have scolded him for being too excited.

そもそも大人のワンコにとって大興奮状態の子犬は苦手なのですが、ゴロウは14-5歳の高齢なので更に厳しい状況に置かれました。

Grown up dogs normally do not like over-excited puppies.  Moreover, Goro is 14-5 years old with wobbly hind legs.  So, the situation was doubly undesirable for him.

ケビンの興奮が収まらないので、ゴロウがたしなめました。

Since Kevin's excited behaviour showed no abatement, Goro decided to put an end to it.

全然効果ありません。

It had no effect on Kevin.

この写真は帰宅後に動画から書き出したものです。ゴロウが目で私たちに訴えています。ゴロウママも私もこれに気付かずに、介入することなく軽くケビンに注意した程度でした。高齢のゴロウにはきつかっただろうな、と私は今になって反省しています。

I got this photo out of the video when I was going through it at home.  Goro's eyes are appealing to his mom and me for help.  Neither his mom nor I noticed it and we chided Kevin lightly, without intervening.  Now I feel sorry for Goro who was too old to handle the situation.

誰も助けてくれないので、ゴロウが再度たしなめています。

As he got no help from us, Goro decides to take the matter into his own hands.

このあたりで私たちがやっとケビンを止めに入りました。

At this point, we put a stop to Kevin's behaviour.

この写真はタイガが助けに入ったのではなく、単にケビンが興奮の矛先をタイガに向けただけです。タイガは左前足を上げて警戒気味ですが、他のワンコを躾けようとはしません。

This photo does not mean that Taiga came to rescue her idol.  Kevin simply redirected his excitement towards Taiga.  Taiga lifts her left paw, but I have never seen her teach manners to other dogs.

ノコンギク Japanese aster

 ノコンギクのピンクの花が咲く品種「桃山」を買えました。以前からうちにあるのは濃い紫色の品種で、できればピンクのも欲しいと思っていました。この↓写真は咲いたときのイメージです。

I found Japanese aster plants with pink flowers being offered on the internet.  The variety I already have produce purple flowers and I always wanted the pink version as well.  The photo below is just the image of what is to come, since the flowering season is long past.　However, aren't they beautiful for wild flowers?

うちの紫のと同じく、花びらが長く花の中心が占める部分が小さいので、花びらの美しさが強調されます。また、咲き始めは花びらが白っぽく、咲き進むにつれて色が濃くなるのも同じです。

メ〇カリで個人同士の取引なので、届いた苗の状態は手作り感満載です。

I bought the plants on a site used by private individuals (sellers and buyers), so the goods that arrived really looked 'personal', instead of business like.  It brought a smile to my face.

サイトでは「２苗」という表示でしたが、４本送られてきました。感謝です。

The price was about 4 US dollars, including postage, and said '2 plants'.  In fact, she sent me 4 plants and I am so grateful.

梱包の際に根っこを湿らせてありましたが、念のためひと晩水につけて置いたら、翌朝には葉っぱがシャキッとしていました。

I left them in a bowl of water overnight and the leaves looked crispy in the morning.

地植えで冬を越せば、春までには根っこが張っているはずです。

The roots should spread well during the forthcoming winter.  I am so looking forward to seeing the flowers next autumn.

この時期、野鳥のエサが少ないのか、タイガの向こうに写っている種無しスダチが齧られていました。キンカンとは違い甘い果実ではないのに、皮が薄いので突くのが簡単だからでしょうか。ちょっとショック。

One of the seedless Kabosu was partially eaten by a wild bird.  They must be really short of food in winter.  The skin of the fruits is thin and I hope they will enjoy them but, unfortunately, these are not as sweet as the seedless kumquat fruits.

種無しキンカンの「ぷちまる」は、苗を２-3年前に買って以来10号鉢のままです。今年はじめて成長を感じられる枝ぶりになりました。

The seedless kumquat has grown well since this spring.  I bought the plant a few years ago and it hardly grew until now.  This year, it has a decent amount of fruits.

まだ小粒ですが、２月頃の完熟に向けて徐々に実が大きくなります。とても甘くて美味しい品種。何年も前にぷちまる苗が一般に発売された当初、大変期待して買ったことがありますが、その当時のぷちまると今のとでは、味、実のサイズ、豊産性で別物のような印象です。いったん人気が無くなったあと、品種改良がなされたのでしょうか。

The fruits are still small but they should continue to grow towards their maturity in February.  They are very sweet, just like the normal kumquat, but these are seedless.  So, it is very nice when eating fresh, as well as candied versions.

冬の朝 Winter morning

 昨日まではちょっと動くと汗ばむ陽気でしたが、今朝は一転、木枯らしのような風が吹いて冬らしい朝でした。散歩帰りに通りすぎた民家のクチナシの実がとても綺麗でした。

Up to yesterday, it has been unseasonably warm.  This morning, it really felt like a winter day with chilly breeze.  The gardenia tree in the neighbourhood has eye-catching, beautiful fruits.

この実はピラフご飯の色付けに使えます。一重の大輪の花が咲く品種にこういう実が生ります。今度お店で苗を見かけたら買おう。

There are many culinary uses for this fruit and I like colouring the rice when making stir fried rice.  This variety has large, single-petal flowers.  Although not as showy as the double-petal variety, the plant is attractive enough when in full bloom.  I will certainly get a plant next time I see one in the shop.

帰宅して玄関前でくつろぐタイガ。こんなに寒い日でも、退屈な家の中に入りたがらない。

Taiga relaxing near the porch.  Even on a cold morning like this, she prefers sitting here instead of coming inside, which she finds boring.

ジッと前の道を見つめてファンの方々が通るのを待っています。

She watches the street in front of the house in case her fans pass by.

私はタイガに付き合って、外でコーヒーを飲みました。コーヒーは好きな飲み物ではないけど、必要に迫られて毎日１-２杯飲んでいます。ネットで見た情報ですが、コーヒーには脳の血流を整える作用があるそうです。私は年をとってから季節の変わり目に頭痛がするようになりましたが、コーヒーを飲むことでそれが解決しました。今では飲み止めると季節に関わりなく頭痛が戻ってきます。

I had my morning coffee outside to keep her company.  Coffee is not my favourite drink but I need to take it so as to avoid getting a headache.  As I got older, I began to suffer from headaches when seasons changed.  I read an article which said that coffee helped regulate the blood flow in the head.  It worked with me, only by drinking 1 or 2 mugs a day.  Nowadays, if I stop drinking coffee, headache comes back regardless of seasons.

地植えにして初年度のリスボンレモンが色づいてきました。6個しか生っていないので、どう利用するかじっくり考えてからにします。もうスイーツ作りの動画は止めたので、今年の8月以来、一度も甘いものを食べていません。非常に体調が良くなって、夕方のジョギングも再開しました。でも、年末にかけて何かのスイーツにレモンを利用する予定です。

The Lisbon Lemon planted in the ground earlier this year has produced 6 fruits and they are becoming ripe.  I stopped making sweets in summer this year and I have not eaten any sweets since.  I used to feel tired all the time, but now I feel so great and have taken up jogging in the evening again.  However, I will use the lemons for sweets over the Christmas/New Year period.

正月用に買った寒菊。写真無しのラベルから「ピンク系」の花が咲くとは分かっていましたが、実際に咲いてみると二重咲きで、八重が好きな私にはちょっと期待はずれ。お店に残っている「きょうだい」たちはまだまだ蕾なのに、この苗は鉢増し・施肥されたからか、正月前に満開になりそうです。

I got this winter chrysanthemum for the forthcoming New Year.  When I bought it, the plant had tight flower buds.  Now growing in a large pot with fertiliser, the flowers are opening too early.  Its 'sisters' are still in the shop and their flower buds remain small and tight.

寒菊を眺めていたら、タイガがそうっとやって来ました。何の要求もせずに、ほんとにジミなワンコです。

As I was wondering over the winter chrysanthemum, Taiga approached me by stealth.  She is so unobtrusive that I sometimes wish she behaved like a demanding, talkative dog like those I see on the YouTube.  Taiga is Kaiken - very stoic and patient.
