ハーブの発芽 Herbs germinating

今日も朝からポカポカの良い天気で、タイガは外の空気を楽しんでいました。

Another warm and dry day today, and Taiga was enjoying the outside air after coming home from our morning walk.

３月中旬にハーブの種を播いたのが、最近の暖かさで発芽し始めました。スペース難のうちではほんの少しだけ発芽してくれれば良いので、種の袋の中から３本指で１回摘んで出てきたものをポットに播きました。大量に余った種は袋のまま保存して、来年も使えれば使います。土は庭土で、何ら特別なことはしていないのですが、水分だけは切らさないようにしていました。写真の頂点のポットから時計回りで、ボリジ、カレンデュラ（キンセンカ）が２鉢、ポルトガルケール、普通のケールです。

I sowed some herb seeds in mid-March, and they started to germinate thanks to the recent warm weather.  Since I am desperately short of space, I only need a few of each.  So, I sowed what I could pinch with my 3 fingers, leaving the rest of the seeds in the package, probably for next year if they are still viable.  As to the soil, I just used the garden soil and did nothing special.  However, I made sure that the soil was moist at all times.   In the photo below, starting from the top and moving clockwise, Borage, Calendula officinalis, Portuguese kale, and regular Kale.

ボリジは真っ先に発芽が始まりました。

The borage was the first to come out.

カレンデュラが最も遅れて発芽しましたが、これ以上増えては困るので、今日で見切り発車です。

The calendula was the last to germinate, but since I only need several plants, I am treating it as germination completed.

上が普通のケール、下がポルトガルケール。成長したときのバリバリの大きな葉っぱのイメージとは程遠い、頼りない感じの双葉です。

The top pot is the regular Kale, and the bottom pot with Portuguese kale.  Considering how huge the leaves of mature kale are, these buds seem so delicate.

各品種につき６個づつポット上げしました。写真手前から、A＝普通のケール、B＝カレンデュラ、C=ボリジ、D=ポルトガルケール。ボリジとポルトガルケールは多年草なのと巨大に育つので、それぞれ６個全部育てられるか分かりません。いずれスペース難から、欲しい人を募るかもしれません。にも拘わらず、ボリジとポルトガルケールは、余った発芽苗を念のため保存しておきました（写真手前）。

I made 6 pots of each variety.  Starting from the nearest group; A=regular kale, B=calendula, C=borage, and D=Portuguese kale.  Since borage and Portuguese kale are perennials and growing large, I would have a hard time finding space to keep all 6 of each.  I may have to ask around to see if anyone wants to grow them.  Nevertheless, I kept the leftovers of borage and Portuguese kale in the original pots (the pots in the blue dish), just in case.

双葉のうちは移植をしても弱らないので、個別のポットに植えたあとも元気でした。むしろ立派に見えてきました。

When the plant has only seed leaves, you can transplant it without doing much damage.  The young leaves in the newly created pots looked robust. and they even looked bigger already.

もう一つ発芽し始めたものがあります。今年から赤花クローバーをハーブとして育てるために、３月上旬に種を直播してありました。ヤフオクで「小さじ４分の１」の表示で売られていたもので、現物は極めて微量でした。なので、写真の赤で囲んだスポットに播いたときも疎らで、種まきした実感がありませんでした。

I noticed another group of new buds.  I wanted to grow red clovers as a herb, starting this year.  So, I sowed seeds in early March.  The seeds were sold as "1/4 of a teaspoon", but the actual amount of seeds was really miniscule.  I used the small space, indicated in red, but never got the satisfying feeling of having sowed.

今朝になってやっとチラホラ確認できました。双葉の間から伸びた芽の丸っこい葉っぱが、いかにもクローバーです。数本でも良いから発芽すれば、そこから増やしていきたいです。

This morning, I was excited to see a few buds coming out.  The leaf growing between the two leaves has a round head, looking really like a clover leaf.  So long as I get several buds growing this spring, I am sure they will spread in no time.

知り合いから頂いたコモンマロウがまた花をつけています。

The common mallows that I got from a friend are doing well with new flowers.

園芸種のマロウはピンクや赤紫のハデな花が咲きますが、コモンマロウの花は直径数ミリです。葉っぱの栄養価が高く、カルシウムに至ってはグラム当たり牛乳の数倍だそうです。私はマグネシウムなどのミネラル類が目当てです。

Unlike the cultivated varieties with attractive pink or purple flowers, this common mallow produces tiny flowers that you can miss easily.  I love the fact that this plant is full of nutrition, e.g. calcium content several times that of cow's milk.  I particularly love the fact that it contains magnesium which I need.

花が終わると直ちに種ができます。これ↓は未だ種が熟していない段階なので食べられます。

Right after flowering, you get seeds - the 'cheese wheel'.  This one is still fresh, and I found the taste pleasant.

桜ほぼ満開 Cherry trees almost in full bloom

 桜の時期の週末はたいてい雨か花曇りで寒いうちに桜が散っていきます。なので、朝から晴天の今日の公園は、人、人の波でした。桜の木が最も密集している草地では、入口が自転車でいっぱい。写真両脇の２本の木は開花が始まったばかりですが、他は８分咲きの印象です。

Almost every year when cherry trees bloom, the weather is either rainy or overcast with freezing temperatures, and the flowers open in vain.  This year, we have warm and dry air, and the cherry trees are almost in full bloom.  So, it was no surprise that the park was full of people enjoying the weekend with picnic lunches.  When we arrived at the field where they have most cherry trees, the entrance was almost blocked with bicycles.  In this photo, the two trees on either side have just started to flower, but other trees were almost 80% in progress.

その駐輪場エリアを抜けて先に進むと、午後の３時近くでも地面は花見客で埋め尽くされていました。

We managed to go through the bicycles and found that the ground was almost all covered with people who were still enjoying their little parties, although it was nearly 3 p.m.  A lot of these people probably have to work, so they are making the most of this weekend.

向こう３-４日は花を楽しめそうです。

We should be able to enjoy the flowers for another 3-4 days.

公園からの帰りにアイスクリームを買って、静かな休憩所に立ち寄りました。お昼ご飯後の昼寝のあと、タイガのシャンプーをして自然乾燥の散歩に出てきたので、シャンプーのご褒美です。

On our way home, we bought an ice cream and found a quiet corner to rest.  I shampooed Taiga after lunch and an afternoon nap, and we came out to let the coat dry in this warm weather.  So, this ice cream was a reward for the shampoo.

Taiga was excited to see the ice cream, but she had to sit down first.

まず私が頂点を毒見したあと、マイスプーンでタイガにおすそ分け。

I tasted the top part for poison, then gave her a spoonful.

食器のステンレス製のスプーンだとアイスが滑って落ちてしまいますが、百均のプラスチック製のだと落ちるどころかアイスがいつまでもスプーンにひっついているので、タイガが苦戦するほど長持ちします。

Unlike with the stainless-steel spoon I used to bring, the ice cream does not slip off with this cheap plastic spoon that I got from a 100-yen shop.  The ice cream actually sticks to the plastic and Taiga has to try hard to get it off, which makes the ice cream last a long time.

通路をクローバー芝に Clover lawn for the footpath

 玄関前の通路は家が建った当時は芝生が敷かれていましたが、夏の暑さで数年のうちにボロボロになってしまいました。以降、夏の間だけサギゴケが細々と復活しては冬前に姿を消す、の繰り返しで他は雑草が覆っていました。

今年からは白ツメクサをグラウンドカバーにして、冬でも緑を維持しようと、その下準備を３日前に始めました。通路の表土をこそげ取り、種まきに備えました。一昨日と昨日が雨、今日は日中 青空でも夜にはまた雨の予報。発芽に水分が必要なことを考えると、今日が最高の日。
When I moved into this house right after it was completed 30 years ago, the footpath was covered with fresh lawn.  However, the grass eventually died out due to the extreme heat of Tokyo summers.  After that, whatever pretty creepers I introduced, they disappeared in winter leaving various weeds.

As a last resort, I have decided to try white clovers as the ground cover that stays green all year round.  To this end, I shaved off the topsoil 3 days ago, before the rain.  The last 2 days have been rainy and, today, the sun was out during the daytime hours, with another rain to follow in the evening.  Since germination requires a lot of moisture in the ground, today was the ideal timing to sow the seeds.

種まきの前にもう一つやるべきことがありました。黄色で囲った食用菊の苗を植え替えすることと、赤で囲ったリコリスを別の場所に移植することです。菊は毎年植え替えが必要ですが、移植のスペースがないうちでは、土をごっそり入れ替えることで実質的な植え替えとしています。この時期、菊苗はぎっしり根っこが絡み合っているのでほぐして、冬の間に再生させた土で植え直します。その作業が、この２箇所だけ未着手で、他は全て植え替えが済んでいます。

Before sowing the seeds, I had another task to do - replant the chrysanthemums (indicated with yellow band) and transplant the licorice bulbs (circled in red) to somewhere else.  Now, chrysanthemums have to be replanted every spring in order to keep them vigorous.  Due to the lack of space in my garden, instead of replanting them somewhere else, I remove the old soil and fill the spot with new soil that I prepared during winter for this purpose.  This is as good as replanting.  This spring, I have done this with all the other chrysanthemum plants, and these two spots were the last ones to be dealt with.

植え替え後の菊苗がこの↓写真ではクタっとしていますが、この後 夜の雨で復活するはずです。通路の土には、ある程度の水はけ確保と、発芽したクローバーが根を広げやすいように、川砂を撒くことにしました。

The chrysanthemums in this photo↓ look sad after being replanted, but they will recover in the rain during the night.  For the soil, I decided to sprinkle river sand in order to ensure drainage as well as to allow the clover roots to spread freely.

ネットで購入したクローバーの種、ニュージーランド産だそうです。

The clover seeds arrived recently - it says they were collected in New Zealand.

種の粒は芥子粒のように細かくて清潔。どんな装置を使えば乾燥した花びらなどの不純物なしに袋詰めできるのだろうと感心しました。

The seeds are miniscule - as tiny as poppy seeds.  They are clean, free of any debris such as dried flower petals.  How do they manage to get them so perfect?

種の分布が偏らないように撒くのは、思ったよりも難しかったです。黄土色っぽいのが種です。

To sow the seeds with equal distribution was impossible - the light brown patches are where seeds are concentrated.

ムラだらけ。でも、クローバーは這って増えるものなので、夏の間にびっしり生えるでしょう。

I ended up with streaks of light brown concentration.  Hopefully, once the seeds germinate, the roots will spread fast during this summer.

種を撒き終わったらその上に土を撒いて、水やりして完了。

With sowing done, I covered the footpath with fresh soil and watered thoroughly.

これからは最高気温が20℃前後の日が続く予報なので、毎日の水やりと相まって発芽が促進されることを期待しています。

The weather forecast for the coming 7 days is that the daily maximum temperature will reach around 20℃.  I will be watering the footpath every day and the warm weather will help the seeds germinate soon.

コーヒーケーキ Coffee cake

 久しぶりにコーヒーケーキを作りました。

材料：150ｇバターorマーガリン、150ｇ砂糖、3個 全卵、180ｇ薄力粉、8ｇベーキングパウダー、60cc 牛乳、2杯 大さじ（すり切り）インスタントコーヒー、バニラオイル少々

180℃のオーブンで35分焼く

I had not made a coffee cake for some time and wanted one today.

Ingredients: 150g butter or margarine, 150g sugar, 3 whole eggs, 180g cake flour, 8g baking powder, 60cc warm milk, 2 table spn (level) instant coffee, vanilla oil

Bake in a pre-heated oven at 180℃ for 35 minutes.

スポンジケーキのようにフワフワの生地。コーヒーの苦味・酸っぱみが効いて美味しいので、アイシングなど無しで食べます。

It is as fluffy as a vanilla sponge cake.  I love the bitterness and slight tartness of the coffee in the cake, so I am going to eat it without any icing.

外で退屈しのぎをしていたタイガは、焼きあがったケーキの甘い匂いを嗅いでいたはずですが、ワンコにコーヒーはNGなので、おすそ分け無しです。

Taiga was enjoying the warm weather outside.  She must have smelt the cake as it was being baked, but coffee is bad for dogs, so no piece for her.

遂に春到来 At last spring is here

 買い物中に偶然会った知り合いと挨拶したら、「高稲荷神社公園の桜が咲き始めている」と知らされたので、タイガを置いて自転車で出かけました。

うちのすぐ近所の空き地ではハナダイコンが満開です。30年前の6月にここへ引っ越して来たときからずっと空き地だったのが、数年前からハナダイコンが咲き始めて、以来年々増えています。

While I was shopping in a supermarket, I ran into an acquaintance who told me that the cherry trees at Takainari Shrine Park were starting to bloom.  Coming home, I took the bicycle out and set out, leaving Taiga at home.

First, this empty plot is very close to my house, where dame's rockets are in full bloom.  Since I bought my house 30 years ago, this plot has been empty and, a few years ago, I noticed some dame's rockets flowering.  Since then, they multiplied and now they are covering almost the entire ground.  They may be invasive, but I love watching the flowers.

高稲荷神社へは、石神井川沿いを練馬方面に向けて進みます。途中の川沿いのソメイヨシノの古木にも開花が始まっていました。石神井川沿いの昔からあるソメイヨシノは寿命が近いので、2, 3年前から徐々に植え替えが始まっています。、

To go to the Park, I cycled along the Shakujii River.  The old Somei Yoshino cherry trees along the riverbank are more or less at the end of their active lives, and the authorities started replacing them gradually a few years ago.

この苗は数か月前に植えられたもので、今年が初開花。何と、ソメイヨシノではないようです。植物苗の世界では、大量の注文があると品種違いが混入することが有るとは聞いていましたが、これもその例のようです。（ちなみに、私が10年以上前にブラッドオレンジ・モロの実を通販で購入したとき聞いた話では、そのミカン園で200本注文したミカン苗のなかから１本だけ、赤いオレンジの実がなる木が育ったということでした。）

This young tree was planted several months ago, and this is its first spring.  Except, this is not Somei Yoshino cherry tree - the flowers are unusually deep pink.  I hear that if you place a large order of plants, you can sometimes find a wrong variety among them, and this is perhaps such an example.  (Before I bought my blood orange Moro plant, I bought a box of Moro fruits on-line.  The seller told me that theirs was a tangerine fruit farm.  Out of the 200 tangerine plants purchased, one tree grew up to produce blood red oranges.)

石神井川沿いの桜の木には、個体識別の番号が振られています。

The cherry trees along the Shakujii River are numbered and registered individually.

濃いピンクの花色が青空に映えて綺麗です。

The deep pink blossoms stand out against the background of blue sky.

花の形や花着きの枝ぶりもソメイヨシノの若木そっくりですが、サトザクラの仲間でしょうか。花はハデハデが好きな私にはこちらのほうがソメイヨシノよりも好みです。この苗が成長した数年後の開花が楽しみです。

The shape of the blossoms as well as the branches are those of a young Somei Yoshino cherry tree.  Probably, this tree is one of the many varieties grouped as Satozakura.  Since I love showy flowers, I much prefer this tree's flowers to those of the regular Somei Yoshino.  I am looking forward to seeing this tree in full bloom in a few years' time.

目的の高稲荷神社公園に到着。聞いたとおり、咲き始めていました。

ここは今年4月7日には狂犬病予防接種の会場になるので、そのとき利用しようと思っています。コロナ以来はじめての会場再開になります。江古田の動物病院へは環七交差点を渡らなければならないし、ここのほうが近いので便利です。

Arriving at the Takainari Shrine Park, I saw a few Somei Yoshino trees starting to bloom.

I will be coming back to this place with Taiga on 7th April to get rabies vaccination.  They are restarting to use this Park for vaccination for the first time after the Covid.  This place is closer to our home than the vet's in the next town Ekoda, and we do not have to cross the busy Ring Road No. 7 to get here.

高稲荷神社公園からの帰宅途中、近所のJAを覗いてみました。19日に買ったトゲナシノイバラが気に入ったので、兄弟苗たちの様子を見たかったのですが、完売御礼でした。トレイ２枚分あったのに、ノイバラのようなマニア向けっぽいものがこんなに速く売れるとは意外です。

On my way home, I dropped into the nearby JA to see how the Rosa multiflora plants were selling after I bought their sibling on 19th.  To my surprise, the plants were sold out - there were two trays of plants.  There must be a lot of rose enthusiasts for such particular plants to be sold like hot cakes.

若い女性たちが楽しそうに買っていったカーネーション鉢。「カーネーション　アイラブユー」の札が立っていましたが、本当かなと首を傾げました。あの品種の鉢植えはもっと自然な草姿で、花色がときと共に変化すると聞いていますが、この苗のは同時に様々なピンクに咲いていて、まるで何本もの苗をぎゅっと詰め込んだように見えます。

Some young women were chatting happily before they picked a few of these carnations.  The plate said 'Carnation - I Love You', but I am not sure if they are authentic.  The growth habit of that variety should be more natural, and the flowers should not have so many different shades at once, since the colour is supposed to change with time.  These pots look like a multitude of plants squeezed into a tiny pot.

一方、私が買ったものは相変わらず健康志向。フレンチラベンダーで、濃い紫色の花が咲く「バンデラ」です。まだ１本しか開花していませんが、周りの茎のそれぞれに蕾が出ています。

What I chose for myself was this - a French lavender with deep purple flowers, 'Bandera'.  This plant has only one inflorescence at the moment, but all the other stems have flower buds.

これくらい濃い花色になれば嬉しいです。

I hope the flower colour will be as dark as these.

これ↓は通販サイトからコピーした「栽培方法」。自分用に、重要な部分を赤字ハイライトしました。練馬の猛暑を越せそうな品種のようです。冬は２階部屋で管理します。

本種はコンパクトな品種。よく分枝し花を沢山咲かせます。
開花時は3月～6月ですが、四季咲き性が強く夏～秋にかけても花をつけます。
耐暑性に優れていますが、耐寒性はなく0℃くらいの温度は必要です。
霜にあたらないようにしましょう。
花や葉に香りがあり特に気合を入れたい時に効果があります
