ナツメ苗 Jujubes

 今日、明日と冬の寒さが予想されているので、ナツメ苗は室内に戻しました。新芽が育つにつれて樹高が少しずつ伸びるので、見ていて楽しいです。

We are back to winter - the maximum temperature today was 9℃ in Tokyo, and it is forecast to be even colder tomorrow.  So, I am keeping the new jujube plants indoors again for the next few days.  As the shoots grow, the trees' heights have been getting taller gradually.

早脆王　Early Crisp King

成長エネルギーは先に発芽した２個の節からの枝に独占されていて、３番目に芽吹いた枝は成長ストップ状態です。でも、初夏までには新たに他の節も芽吹いてくるでしょう。

With this plant, the growth energy seems to be concentrated in the first two shoots, while the third shoot has come to a standstill.

蕾があちこちの枝に出ています。

Lots of flower buds can be seen.

蟠棗　Panzao

この苗は芽吹きにあまり偏りがないので安心して見ていられます。

Nutrition seems to be evenly distributed among the new shoots.

葉っぱの色がこの段階では浅緑色の印象。皇帝棗と似ています。

The colour of the leaves is light green at this stage, whereas the new shoots of the other two varieties are in dark green.

無核金絲棗　Seedless Gold Thread

この品種は生食と乾燥の両方に向いているそうです。無核の品種ではないけど種を取り除いた金絲棗の乾燥果は、知り合いからお土産で何度かいただいたことがあり、甘い砂糖菓子のように美味しかったです。

This variety is good for both fresh eating and for drying.  My friend has given me a dried version of this variety as a souvenir from China on several occasions, and the fruits tasted like sugar snack.

皇帝棗　Emperor

去年の夏に買った苗で、初年度ながら10個の実を生らせました。カリカリの実は甘くて美味しかった。

この品種名は日本の業者がつけた名前で、中国の棗栽培に関する研究機関などのサイトやショップを見ても全く出てきません。個人的には「梨棗」が正体ではないかとずっと思っています。蟠棗は梨棗の枝替わりを選抜して作出した品種ですが、うちの皇帝棗と類似点がいくつかあります。新芽がほぐれる直前の赤茶色の先端、新芽の浅緑色、幹が赤い木であることなどです。

I bought this plant in summer last year and harvested 10 fruits in autumn.  They were crisp and sweet.

The name 'Emperor' does not exist in China, and I suspect that the proper name for this variety is 'Li'.  Now, Panzao is a selection from the bud mutation of Li jujube, and I can see some similarities between this tree and my Panzao, such as the red tip on the new buds before they open up into separate leaves, the light green colour of new leaves, the red wood on both of them.

去年の３月に買ったゴールドのクリスマスローズが咲き始めました。全部で７本の花茎が上がっていますが、花を見て「あれ？」。

The golden Christmas rose have started to bloom.  I bought this plant in March last year and it has grown by 3-4 times in the ground.  It now has 7 flower stems, but when I saw the open flowers, I was a little puzzled.

去年はシベの周りにアイ（赤い輪）が入っていたのが、今年はどの花も単色です。クリローって、こんなに不安定？　そういえば、以前育てていた赤花のクリローは、年によっては濃い赤色が出たり、他の年にはライラック色になったりしていました。来年はどうなるか楽しみにしています。

Last year, the flowers had a 'red eye' around the pistil and stamen, but none this year.  Are Christmas roses so unstable?  This reminded me of the red flower Christmas rose that I used to have.  The colour varied from year to year, between red and lilac.  I am looking forward to see how the flowers of this plant will turn out to be next year.

春なのか冬なのか Is it spring or winter?

 昨日は一日中 冷たい雨が降り、今朝見たらバルコニーに出してあったキーライムの枝先がクタっとなっていました。つい最近まで室内で越冬していたので、この急激な寒さはこたえたようです。

We had freezing rain all day yesterday.  This morning, I was shocked to see the state of the citrus plants on the balcony.  The ends of branches on the Key lime were looking sorry as if they were about to fall off.  After spending the winter indoors, the plant was not ready for the sudden return of wintry weather.

幸い、床をみても蕾は落ちていないので、暖かくなれば開花が期待できます。

Luckily, the flower buds were still handing on the branches, so I am hoping to see flowers in a few weeks when it will be warmer.

キーライムの隣に置いてあるタヒチライムも同様に枝先が首を垂れていますが、やはり蕾は落ちていません。

The Tahiti lime next to the Key lime has suffered likewise from the cold spell, but the flower buds are also intact.

さらにその隣に置いてあるフィンガーライムのミアローズ。去年の秋に開花したあとの幼果が最近になって太り始めました。

The finger lime "Mia Rose" seems to be doing better than the other two.  It had some flowers again in autumn last year, and the young fruits started to grow larger recently.

４年前の春に買った矮性の「旭山」が今年も咲き始めました。去年の春に鉢増しした後も矮性のままなので管理しやすいです。

This is a dwarf cherry tree called "Asahiyama" which I bought in spring 4 years ago.  I replanted it in a larger pot last spring, but it has remained compact, making it a lot easier for me to manage.

「関山」ほどの豪華さはないけど、そこそこ綺麗で場所をとらず、しかも放置でも樹姿がみだれないので世話要らずです。

The flowers are not as showy as the variety called "Kanzan" (my best favourite variety), but they are pretty enough.  Moreover, the tree keeps its shape without my having to trim or train the branches.

午後には少し暖かくなったので、公園へ向かいました。ここは途中にある、元野菜畑で今は区の管理で一般に提供されている草地。毎年、ハナダイコンが綺麗です。
The weather turned slightly warm in the afternoon, so we headed for the park.  On the way, we stopped at this field where we can see the flowers of "dames violet".  This field used to be a private vegetable farm but now it is open to the public.

草地の脇にある花桃も綺麗。庭木のように剪定されず、自由に育っているので清々しい。

At the side of the field, there is a flowering peach tree, growing freely without being pruned like trees in people's gardens.

茂呂山公園のふもとの草地は毎年花見客に人気。

The field at the bottom of Moroyama Park is a popular spot for picnic lunches during cherry blossom season.

その後は城北中央公園の静かな林の中を散策。

We then moved to the quiet woods of Johoku Central Park.

何とも懐かしい顔にばったり。タイガの幼馴染、かつ同い年の子で、甲斐犬ミックスのコブ君。保護されて迎えられた当時はガリガリの子犬で超ビビリでしたが、タイガとは最初から仲良しでした。
We ran into a familiar face - Taiga's puppyhood friend.  He was born in the same year, and he is a Kaiken mix.  When he was adopted, he was a skinny puppy, terrified of anything and everything, except Taiga.

お互い12歳で静かな挨拶。

Now both in their 12th year, they greet each other quietly.

午後散歩 Afternoon Walk

 タイガのシャンプーをしたので、午後の早い時間帯に公園へ向かいました。今日の最高気温は25℃だったそうですが、暑さと乾燥を利用してシャンプー後の自然乾燥の旅に出ました。散歩である程度乾かしてから、家に帰ってドライヤー仕上げです。

公園へ向かう途中、石神井川沿いの歩道ではソメイヨシノが咲き始めていました。いつも、公園の桜よりも川沿いのほうが早く咲き始めます。天気予報では28日は最高気温が27℃となっていますが、その後数日間は15℃前後に下がるそうなので、暑い間に開いた花が長持ちしそうです。

After shampooing Taiga, we left for the park in the early afternoon.  The maximum temperature was 25℃ today and the air was dry, so I could count on getting Taiga fairly dry.  On a day like this, using the dryer after coming home will quickly finish the job.

On our way to the park, the cherry trees along the Shakujii River were starting to bloom.  The cherry trees along the river always start flowering ahead of those in the park.  According to the forecast, this warm weather will last a few days more, with the maximum temperature reaching 27℃ on 28th.  After that, it is expected to move around 15℃.  This is good news - the blossoms that opened during the warm days will last longer in the cool weather afterwards.

午後２時半頃という中途半端に早い時間なので、人影はまばら。

At around 2:30p.m., it was past lunch time and there were few people in the park.

暑い中、歩いているだけで疲れるので、向こうに見えるベンチで一休みすることにしました。

Just walking in the sun was tiring enough, so I decided to take a break on one of the benches near the flower beds.

右の野球場で練習が行われているとき、散歩途中のひとたちがよくここで観戦しているベンチです。

On the right is the baseball ground.  When students are playing matches, people often stop and watch the games from these benches.

おやつ！と勘違いしたタイガが大興奮したので、たしなめました。反省の演技が上手いワンコ。

Taiga got too excited thinking it was a treat time, so I told her off.  She is good at playing the part of a contrite pooch.

こういうふうに落ち着いてから上げます。

When she calmed down, she got what she wanted.

帰宅して、庭のスモモの花。これは鉢植えのハニーハート。酸味が殆どなくて食べやすいし早生品種で気に入っているので、地植えのエレファントハートと李王に少し高接ぎしてあります。

My plum trees have started to bloom.  This is a variety called 'Honey Heart'.  It is sweet and low in tartness, and it ripens at the end of June.  Since I like this variety a lot, I have made grafts on two plum trees growing in the ground.

こちらはエレファントハート。地植えにした翌年はたくさん実を着けたのに、それ以降は木の成長にエネルギーが行って、花着きが悪くなりました。

This is 'Elephant Heart', a US variety with red flesh.  It produced many fruits in the first year after planting it in the ground from a pot, but since then, the tree is prioritising growth over producing fruits.

エレファントハートの花の中心は、ぽっかり大きな穴が開いたようなところが特徴です。

The dark green, big cavity in the centre of the flower is unique to this variety.

散歩から帰って私はヘロヘロですが、この後タイガのドライヤー掛けです。

After the long, tiring walk in the sun, I still have the job of drying Taiga.

柑橘類など Misc.

 室内で越冬させた実生キーライムの蕾が増えてきました。以前の写真ではいつポロっと落ちるか分からないほど華奢でしたが、今はしっかりしています。

More and more flower buds on the Key lime seedling plant have been coming out, thanks to the warmer weather and with the plant having been indoors all winter.  In the previous photos, the flower buds looked so delicate that they might come off at any second, but now they look really steady.

一部の蕾ではメシベが外に飛び出しています。他にいま開花中の柑橘類は無いので、授粉作業はできません。

On some of the flower buds, the pistil has come out of the bud.  Since there is no other citrus plant in bloom currently, cross pollination is not possible, and I hope it received mature enough pollen while inside the bud.

すぐ横に置いてあるタヒチライムの蕾も膨らんできました。この苗は３年前に地元園芸店で新苗として買ったものですが、やっと開花しそうです。この苗の兄弟苗は過去３年間、一年中 薄暗い園芸店の中に置かれていたので、今では前年度以前からの葉っぱがゼロで、やっと新芽が動き出したところです。試しに、直射日光の必要性について店員さんに言及してみましたが、無関心な様子でした。

Next to the Key lime plant is Tahiti lime, whose flower buds are also coming out.  I bought this plant 3 years ago as a newly grafted plant, and this will be the first year of flowering.  There were a few sibling plants left on the shelf which have not been sold all these years.  Moreover, they have been kept in the dimly lit shop all this time.  As a result, they look really weak, with no leaves left from the year before.  New buds are coming out just now, but they have no plans to place the trees outside of the shop.

昨日、苗のダウンサイジングのために剪定して２階から下した星タンゴールを、一回り小さな鉢（10号菊鉢）に植え付けました。鉢に収まるように、根っこをかなり切り詰めましたが、柑橘類は丈夫なので回復するでしょう。

I repotted the Hoshi Tangor this morning, that I pruned and brought down from upstairs balcony yesterday.  I trimmed the roots drastically so that they would fit into a slightly smaller pot.  Citrus trees are tough, and I am optimistic about this plant recovering from the treatment.

私が外にいる間かならずタイガも外に出てきますが、くつろいでいる姿の向こうを見てショックを受けました。昨日の夕方、種無しスダチの根元に埋め込んだ小型のニラ苗の様子が変。

When I am out working on my plants, Taiga always comes out and watches me.  As I glanced towards her relaxing in front of the porch, my eyes were caught by a sight beyond her.  I had buried a dwarf garlic chive plant at the foot of a Seedless Sudachi yesterday evening.

今朝一番に見たときは異常が無かったのに、今は根元がむき出しになっていて、それを覆っていた土が左側の砂利通路にばらまかれています。

There was nothing wrong when I saw it first thing this morning, but now its roots are exposed to the elements and the soil was scattered to the left covering the pebbles that were there.

根っこがぁ！ まさかと思ってタイガの前足を調べてみたら土だらけ。これほど確かな物的証拠はないでしょう。ということは、以前ラズベリーのルビービューティーが何度植え戻しても掘り起こされていたあの騒動もタイガが犯人？　私はてっきり野鳥かハクビシンの仕業だと思っていましたが。。。こいつめ！

The roots are drying up in the sun.  Suddenly, I had a suspicion and checked Taiga's paws - fresh dirt was stuck between the pads and nails!  Then I remembered the annoying incident where Ruby Beauty raspberry plant was dug up every time I replanted it in the same spot.  At that time, I though the culprit was either wild birds or some animals. I always regarded her as a typical Japanese breed who respected my garden.  Even if I invite her, she never relieves herself on this side of the fence, however desperate she is to go toilet.  Now, I have to revise my thoughts about her.

去年の３月末に買って地植えにしたあと株が太ったクリスマスローズの花が上がってきました。やはりあの新芽は花茎だったようです。ゴールドの八重咲でレッドアイが入ります。

One of the flower buds of the Christmas rose has come out of the bushy leaves.  This is a double flower variety with a 'red eye' around the pistil and stamen.

葉っぱを持ち上げて覗くと、全部で6-7本あるようです。

By lifting the leaves, I could see 6-7 stems of flower buds currently growing.

今日は朝から暑い！ さっきまで外で私を監視していたタイガは、勝手に冷たい玄関タイルの上で涼しんでいました。
The weather has been warm since the start of the morning.  Taiga quietly slipped into the porch to rest on the cool tiles.

あのニラ苗についてはまだ叱っていません。こう暑いと私もクタっとなって、怒るエネルギーが沸かない。

I have not mentioned the dwarf garlic chives to her yet.  When it is so hot, I cannot muster the strength to scold her.
