蟠棗など Panzao jujube etc

 昨日も今日も、毎日雨です。小ぶりになった間に、蟠棗の高接ぎ枝の状況をチェック。

家の中で死ぬほど退屈しているタイガは、玄関ドアが開く気配がするとすっ飛んできます。

It continues to rain due to another typhoon, this time No. 26.  During a short intermission, I went to check the new buds on the Panzao scion that I grafted onto a Japanese jujube tree.  

Taiga is bored all day inside the house, and she did not miss the chance to get out.

鉢植えの日本ナツメに高接ぎした蟠棗の枝には２箇所に新芽が出ています。上の節に出た枝は、長いほうで10cmを超えました。でも、両方とも一年限りの枝で、葉腋には蕾も出ています。

The Panzao scion had two nodes.  The upper one has produced two limbs, one of which is already longer than 10 cm.  Both are temporary limbs that will fall off before winter, but they have flower buds at the base of each leaf.

下の節の芽吹きがより重要。２本の一年限りの枝の間に、恒常的な枝が出始めています。

What is happening with the lower node is more interesting.  Between the two limbs, a permanent branch has started to come out.

よりアップで見ると分かりやすい。来年の夏に採り木して独立の苗にすれば、この恒常的な枝が将来の主幹になるでしょう。

Up close, the permanent branch.  If I am successful in air-layering the branch next summer, this permanent branch will become the future trunk of the new tree.

皇帝ナツメはコガネ成虫に散々幼果を齧られたあと、4個しか実が残っていません。うち１個が色づいてきました。

Most of the young fruits of the Emperor jujube were damaged by Japanese green beetles, and there are only 4 intact fruits left.  One of them is turning golden and red.

皇帝ナツメにしてはかなり小さいですが、味見できるだけでも有難い。

For an Emperor jujube fruit, this one is really tiny, but I could not wait to taste it.

齧ってみると、何と、梨のようにジューシー！ これはたぶん、今年の異常なほどの降雨のおかげでしょう。味は砂糖水のように爽やかな甘さで、皮の付近にありがちなナツメ独特のクセのある香りは感じられませんでした。サクサクの食感も最高です。去年・一昨年の夏は普通の降水量で果実は石のように硬かったので、今年のサクサク食感や梨のようなジューシーさは、やはり雨の効果だと思います。この1個は、今まで食べたナツメ果の中で最高でした。

When I took a bite, it was incredibly juicy, just like a pear!  This is probably thanks to the rainy months we had.  It tasted like fresh syrup, and I did not feel any distinctly jujube flavour that normally exists in the skin.  The flesh was crispy and pleasant.  The flesh of this variety last year and the year before was rock hard, not crispy.  Again, I think the unusual amount of rainfall was responsible for the crispiness.  Actually, this fruit was the best jujube I have ever eaten.

無核大金絲ナツメ Seedless Silk Thread Jujube

 「無核」ナツメとは名ばかりで、去年も今年も全ての実に種が入っていたので、記録目的で動画を作成。

This jujube variety is supposed to be 'seedless'.  However, since each and every one of the fruits that I harvested last year and this year had a seed, I decided to make a video for the record.

種無しスダチ Seedless Sudachi

 連日の雨のあいだに種無しスダチの枝がボウボウに徒長していました。台風25号が去って、次の26号の影響でまた雨が降る前に剪定です。３，４年前に苗を地植えにした場所は玄関横、タイガの視線の先です。

During the rainy days that lasted for more than a month, new branches of the Seedless Sudachi kept growing long and lanky.  Today, we are having a break from rains, with the typhoon No. 25 gone, and before the effect of the new No. 26 starts to reach Tokyo.  I planted the Seedless Sudachi in the ground a few years ago, after growing it for several years in a 30 cm in diameter pot - it is standing close to the front door and at the end of Taiga's glance.

The photo does not show well, but the new branches are getting out of control.

伸びた枝の間から覗くと、実が大きく育っています。

だいぶスッキリしました。苗の上のほうに実のかたまりが見えます。

After pruning, the plant looks much better, and I can see the fruits at the top of the tree.

今年は雨のおかげか、あるいは木が充実したからか、今までにない大実です。

I do not know whether it is because of the weeks of rain or the fact that the tree is becoming more mature, but the fruits are larger than any I have seen in previous years.

もう9月下旬なので、一気に収穫しました。

Sudach fruits are consumed while they are still young, since the flavour is most intense at this stage.

この一番大きな実の重さを後で計りたいと思います。全体的に、デパ地下で売られている「ハウス栽培」の高級スダチに負けない出来だと思います。ただし、お店のスダチは種入り、うちのは種無しです。

10号ロングスリット鉢で育てていた間、実は小さく、雨が数日続くと裂果が多発していたのに、地植えしたあと、今年の夏の長雨にも拘わらず１個も汚損果が発生していないので大満足です。去年は地植えの初成りで3個が生り、今年はより多い結実だったので、将来が明るいです。

This fruit seems to be largest, and I am going to weigh it later.   Overall, I feel that these homegrown fruits are as good as any that are sold in department stores as high-end sudachi.  Moreover, those in the shop are regular sudachi with tonnes of seeds inside, whereas mine are basically seedless.  

While this tree was growing in the pot, the fruits were much smaller, and after a few days of continuous rain, there used to be cracks on many of the fruits.  This year, in spite of the weeks of rain, there has been no crack or any other form of spoilage.  Last year was the first time of fruiting after planting the tree in the ground and it produced 3 fruits.  So, it is getting better every year.

一番大きな実の果重は40gでした。

The largest fruit weighed 40g - quite heavy for a sudachi.

半割にした状態。果汁た～っぷり！ 果肉の色は、実物はもっと浅緑色で、写真のような黄色ではありません。この外皮の薄さにも拘わらず、雨による裂果が無かったのには再度驚き。

When I cut it into half, the juice spouted out.  As to the colour of the flesh, my camera is misleading, since the actual flesh was light green - the right stage for consuming sudachi.  Considering how thin the outer skin is, it is amazing that there was no crack on the fruits after days of rain.

絞ると種は一個だけ。期待以上に果汁が多いです。

There was just one seed.  The amount of the juice exceeded my expectation.

桃花ヒガンバナ Pink Spider Lilies

 桃花ヒガンバナは2箇所に植えていて、陽当たりの良いほうの花はもう終わりに近いですが、もう一方のグループは昨日から満開になっています。雨続きで涼しいせいか、今年は花持ちが良いです。

I grow pink spider lilies in two separate spots.  The flowers in the sunnier spot have more or less finished, while those in the less sunny spot reached the full bloom stage yesterday.  Due probably to the cool rainy weather, the flowers are lasting well this year.

パッションフルーツ開花 Flower on Passion Fruit Plant

今日は早朝散歩のときは晴れていたのに、お昼頃からまた雨が降り始めました。 

8月24日に買った売れ残りパッションフルーツは、鉢に植えつけたこの状態から、

It was cloudy but not raining this morning when we went out for our morning walk.  However, it began to drizzle towards noon.  

The leftover passion fruit plant I bought on August 24th looked like this right after I repotted it.

今はここまで成長して、最初の蕾が開花しました。

This is how it looks now and the first flower bud has just opened.

朝散歩のときは蕾だったのに、雨のなかお昼前には開花していました。

When we went out for a walk, it was still a flower bud, but it opened before noon in spite of the rain.

実が着くものならそのまま育てます。これくらい幼い鉢植えは室内越冬になるので、なるべく苗が大きくならないよう、体力を結実に向けさせたいからです。そこで、雨から保護して受粉を助けるために、このあと袋掛けにしておきました。

If there is fruit setting, I would welcome it for the following reason.  A young passion fruit plant like this cannot survive the winter outside, so I want to keep the plant as compact as possible.  For this, I would like the plant's energy being concentrated into growing the fruit rather than the vine.  So, after this photo, I placed a plastic bag to protect the flower from the rain.

大雪ナツメなど Daxue Jujube etc

 今年が栽培初年度の大雪ナツメ苗は、７月以降 急激に枝葉が繁茂し始めました。苗を置いている場所は東向きバルコニーで、10号ロングスリット鉢に植わっています。

The Daxue Jujube (Big Snow Jujube) plant is in its first year of growth, and since the start of July, a lot of new branches came out.  The tree is placed on the east side of the house and grows in a 30 cm in diameter tall pot.

７月の開花からは５個ほどの着果があり、幼果は順調に肥大しています。

The flowering in July resulted in about 5 young fruits, and they are growing nicely.

その後、８月中旬頃に伸び出した小枝に沢山の花が咲いたと思ったら、今では鈴なり状態です。

Then around mid-August, a lot of new limbs started to grow followed by heavy flowering which resulted in fruiting.

この房は上の写真で右側のかたまり。まるで苗のカタログ写真のようです。うちで育てたナツメ苗でこのような着果の仕方は初めてみました。

This bunch is a close-up of the limb on the right in the above photo.  The bunch looks like something out of a sales catalogue.  I have never seen anything like it before among the jujube trees in my garden.

ナツメという果樹はとにかく日光と高温を必要としますが、今年の夏は毎日のように雨が降るので、幼果の成長に悪影響が出ないか心配しています。

Now, jujube trees require both lots of sunshine and high temperature.  This summer, we had rainy days almost non-stop since August, and I am worried if the young fruits will grow to maturity before winter.

こちらは大雪ナツメの右側に置いてある日本ナツメのうち、樹高が低いほう。まだ色づいていません。

This is a Japanese jujube, grown from a sucker, and sits next to the Daxue Jujube.  Its fruits are still looking green.

これはそのまた右側にある、日本ナツメの樹高の高いほう。

This is another Japanese jujube from a sucker and is the taller of the two.  

少しずつ色づいています。

Its fruits are slowly maturing.

甘酸っぱくて、なかなか美味しい。

It tastes very sweet and sour and pleasant to eat.

玄関前の通路脇に植えてある赤花ヒガンバナが満開になりました。通るたびに目を引かれます。

The red spider lilies (Lycoris radiata) are in full bloom.  They grow by the footpath in front of the front door, so they catch my eyes every time I pass.

カメラを近づけると明るく写そうとする傾向がありますが、実物は黒味を帯びた濃い赤で、朱色っぽいヒガンバナよりこちらの方が好みです。

When I put my camera up close, it tends to make the picture too light, but the actual flowers are dark red, as opposed to orangey red which is found in some Lycoris radiata.

午後散歩 Afternoon Walk

 秋らしく涼しい一日だったので、早めの午後散歩に出ました。うちから近くのタクシー会社の表には大きなオリーブの鉢植えがあります。実がたわわに生っているので、許可を得て写真を撮りました。

It was a nice autumn-like day today, and we left early for our afternoon walk.  In front of the tax company near my home, there are two olive trees growing in pots.  Both are laden with young fruits, so I asked for a permission to take photos.

この木は上の写真で右側にある小さいほう。若木なのによく生っています。

This is the tree on the right in the above photo.  Although still a young tree, it is loaded with fruits.

こちらは左側の木で、かなりの年季がはいっています。

This is the one on the left.  It looks very old but also prolific.

大粒の実がたわわ。いずれの木に関しても品種名は分からないそうです。

The young fruits are quite large and inviting.  Unfortunately, they do not know the names of their varieties.

公園に着くと酔芙蓉がまだ咲いていました。夏から晩秋まで、次々と蕾が出てきて咲き続けるので花木として優秀です。

We arrived at the first field of the Johoku Park, where the Hibiscus mutabilis  tree was in bloom.  These trees keep producing flowers from early summer to late autumn - an ideal plant for a park.

城北公園の酔芙蓉はどれも一重咲きの品種（私はハデな八重咲きのが好みですが）。

Hibiscus mutabilis trees in this park are all single petal variety (I prefer the double petal variety, since the flowers are strikingly beautiful).

花を眺めていたら、仲良しの豆柴のリンちゃんが通りがかりました。いつもより元気が無いので尋ねたら、これから大嫌いなシャンプーをされに行くところだそうで、事態を察しているようです。

As I was admiring the flowers, Rin, a miniature Shiba Inu passed by.  She seemed less cheerful than usual, and her mom told me that Rin was on her way to get a shampoo treatment which she hates.

私がリンちゃんのご機嫌を取りながら写真を撮っていたら、呼ばれていないタイガが割り込んできました。

When I was taking pictures of Rin, at the same time trying to cheer her up, Taiga quietly cut in between us.  She probably felt left out?

リンちゃんを見送ったあとは他の草地へ移動。

After parting with Rin, we moved to another field.

久しぶりにカンタと会えました。

We ran into Kanta whom we had not seen for nearly 2 months.

カンタは最近９歳の誕生日を迎えたところで、タイガよりも３歳年下です。

Kanta recently reached 9 years old, which makes him 3 years younger than Taiga.
