赤葉山椒に蕾など Copper Leaf Sansho's flower buds etc

 今朝は冷たい風が吹いていたので爽やかな５月の朝でした。ワンコの散歩で城北公園へ行くと、１本だけ有る赤花西洋トチノキが満開でした。この築山はタイガのオヤツスポットです。

A typical early May morning with blue sky and a chilly breeze.  We went to Johoku Park where there is a mound with a horse chestnut tree growing.  This is the only horse chestnut tree in this park.  Also, this mound is Taiga's favourite treat spot.

この赤花のが、白花のよりずっと好みです。

I love this red flower variety over the white flower one.

帰る前にベンチで休んでオヤツタイムです。

Before going home, we sat down for Taiga's treat.

玄関前の通路に種を播いたシロツメクサが育ってきました。

I sowed seeds of white clovers to cover the footpath between the front door and the gate, and the plants are doing well.

石が数センチほどシロツメクサの中に埋まる状態で、クローバー芝としてちょうど良い感じです。

The clovers are now several centimeters taller than the stones, and they are just about the right size to be called 'clover lawn'.

まだ幼いので葉っぱが細かくて柔らかい。

The plants are still very young with tiny soft leaves.

一方、こちらは盛り土にして植えた皇帝ナツメの根元にグラウウンドカバーとしての役を果たしています。スタートはほんの小さなパッチを張り付けただけでしたが、春になって急激に広がり、予定した範囲から暴走し始めています。

In contrast, the clovers at the foot of the Emperor jujube tree have been growing vigorously.  They started with a tiny patch that I transplanted from an empty plot in the neighbourhood.  Once spring arrived, they took off and they are now growing beyond the boundary I had set in my head.

先日買ったイングリッシュラベンダーのアーリーブルーがとても綺麗で気に入りました。花の穂を１個採って紅茶の香り付けにしたら最高でした。

I bought this lavender recently and I am really fond of it.  When I picked a flower head and put it in my black tea, the scent was excellent.

４月27日に買った赤葉山椒の小苗は開花までに数年かかると思っていましたが、
The copper leaf Sansho (Japanese pepper) that I bought on 27th April was so tiny that I thought it might take several years before flowering.

一箇所に蕾の集合が出てきました。

However, I noticed some flower buds this morning.

これ↓はもう実になっているようです。

This round head even looks like a fruit.

セリを冬の間に買って、料理に使ったあとは根っこを庭土に埋めておきました。その後 芽が出てきて、3月17日現在こんなに疎らだったのが、

I bought a bunch of Japanese water cress this winter at a supermarket.  They usually come with roots that are cut at about 5 cm long.  After consuming the water cress, I buried the roots in the ground, and new shoots started to come out.  This↓was how they looked as at 17th March.

今は繁茂していて、まるで野菜のようです。

This is how they are now - looking like vegetables, rather than herbs.

フカフカの土と十分な水で、見たことない大きなセリになっています。英語でセリのことをJapanese celery と呼ぶこともあるようですが、まさに小振りのセロリのようです。あまり用途に詳しくないので、これからネットで調べて利用法を増やしたいです。

The soil is rich and, and I water the plants every day, remembering that I used to see them at the side of a small stream when I was a child.  These plants are sometimes called 'Japanese celery' in English.  They may look a little like a small celery, but their taste and flavour are much softer.

その隣にはアシタバが育っています。お肉の野菜炒めに混ぜ込んで使っています。

Nex to the water cress, Ashitaba plants are growing.  I have been harvesting these quite frequently, since young leaves and stalks are tender and almost free of bitterness.

ラベンダー新苗など New Lavender Plant etc

 朝散歩で公園へ向かう途中、マンション横の花壇にマーガレットの大苗が満開になっていました。

On our way to the Johoku Park this morning, I saw a beautiful margaret plant in full bloom at the side of an apartment building.

ここの花壇はよく手入れされていて、一年中花が絶えません。

This flowerbed is always managed meticulously and never without flowers throughout the year.

今日は天気が良かったのに朝散歩中は冷たい風が吹いていて、公園に着くと草地の冷却効果で更に寒かったです。

It was a fine morning, but the wind was quite chilly.  When we arrived at the park, the grassy field had an additional chilling effect.

林の中は風がこなくて幾分過ごしやすい。

Not too bad in the woods, since the trees softened the wind.

公園からの帰り道、空気が澄んでいたので池袋のサンシャイン60ビルがよく見えました。

On our way home from the park, the Sunshine 60 Building, the landmark of Ikebukuro, was clearly seen in the distance.  (Since I do not drive, my sense of distance is that Ikebukuro is 4 stops away on the Yuraku-cho Line from my nearest underground station.)

帰宅して買い物に行った帰りにちょっと寄った近所のJAで見たラベンダー苗です。イングリッシュラベンダーの仲間で「アヴィニョン・アーリーブルー」という品種だそうです。普通、ラベンダーの花自体はあまり香らない印象ですがこの品種の花は強香で、苗を持ってレジで順番を待つあいだ香りを楽しんでいました。これが税込みで500円とは信じられない大苗です。

After the morning shopping, I dropped into the nearby JA where I saw this English lavender plant.  It is called 'Avignon Early Blue'.  Normally, I feel that lavender flowers do not have strong scent, but I found that this plant was an exception.  As I was waiting in line at the cash register holding the plant in my hands, I enjoyed the strong scent of the flowers close to my face.

苗の植え付けは午後の涼しい時間まで待ちました。うちにある素焼き鉢で一番大きなサイズを使いましたが、すぐに小さすぎるようになるかも。

I waited until it was much cooler in the afternoon to plant the new lavender.  This was the largest clay pot I had, but I may need to increase the pot size soon.

いまオレンジの開花時期で、庭仕事をしていると何とも言えない良い香りがします。これ↓は柚子苗に高接ぎしてあるミネオラ。

Oranges are in full bloom currently and they send off the most beautiful scent as I work in the garden.  These branches are of Minneola which I grafted on a Yuzu tree.

道路側に目隠しも兼ねてカラカラと多田錦を植えてあります。カラカラを地植えにした当初は2個生りましたが、それ以来ゼロです。この木にはミネオラ、モロ、星タンゴールを高接ぎしてあります。

I have Cara Cara orange and Tadanishiki yuzu growing by the road.  When I first planted the Cara Cara, I had a few fruits but nothing since then.  On this tree, I have grafted Minneola, Moro and Hoshi Tangor orange.

そのうち、今年初めてモロが少し開花しており、さらに

This year, a branch of Moro has produced a few flowers for the first time.    

星タンゴールも初めて開花していたらしく、枝には幼果が１個だけついています。

Also, Hoshi Tangor must have flowered for the first time, since I see a young fruit on that branch.

ブドウ山椒など Japanese pepper etc

 朝散歩の途中で高稲荷神社公園の横を通りました。先日、狂犬病予防接種の会場となったところです。

During our morning walk, we passed by the park where we recently visited for Taiga's rabies shot.

その公園の入り口横のノイバラが満開になっていました。最近買ったうちのノイバラ同様、トゲ無しの個体です。

Near the entrance of the park, there is a bush of Japanese wild rose.  This is the same variety as the one I bought the other day - i.e., thornless multiflora rose.

うちの苗は蕾の兆しが全くありませんが、来年は少しでも咲いてくれたら嬉しいです。

My plant shows no sign of having flower buds, being too young.  However, I am hoping to see some flowers next year.

花蜂が飛び交っていました。

ラベンダーの開花がピークのようなので、お茶用に昨日のうちに花を摘み取りました。60秒間蒸したあとは夕方だったので、ひと晩 部屋干しにしてありました。

The lavender flowers seemed to be at their peak, so I picked them yesterday afternoon.  I immediately steamed them (60 seconds) and spread them on a piece of baking sheet in the room last night.

今朝になってバルコニーの物干し竿に移動。直射日光に当たると、あっと言う間にカリカリに乾燥しました。

First thing this morning, I put them outside on the balcony.  Thanks to the sun and heat, the flowers became bone dry in no time at all.

摘み取ったものを直接干すよりも、一旦蒸して乾燥させる方が変色しないと思っています。

After picking, I always steam the plant material instead of drying them directly.  This way, I feel that the original colours are preserved as much as possible.

約半分を使ってお茶を入れました。

I used about half of them to make tea.

かなり薬草っぽい風味ですが、私は日頃からローズマリーの生葉を煎じて飲んでいるので全く抵抗ありません。

It tastes like a herbal medicine, but I have no problem with it since I am used to drinking tea with fresh rosemary leaves.

鹿沼土が無くなっていたので近所のJAへ行ったら、またしても誘惑に負けました。ブドウ山椒の苗が入荷したばかりで、６個入りのトレイの中から選び放題でした。対して、先日の赤葉山椒の苗は、最後に１個残っていたのを買ったので、他の苗はどんなに大きかったかなど全く分かりません。写真↓は、右がブドウ山椒、左が赤葉山椒。両者の値段は同じでしたが、幹の太さが違います。

As I had used up a particular type of soil, I went to the nearby JA where I saw another Japanese pepper variety.  It is called Budou (grape) Sansho.  This is another rare variety which produces pepper fruits in bunches resembling grapes.  In the photo below, the one on the right is Budou Sansho, and the one on the left is the copper leaf sansho I bought recently.  When I saw the copper leaf sansho, it was the last one left on the tray, whereas with the Budo Sansho, the plants had just arrived, and I was able to choose the best one out of the whole tray.  It was priced the same as the copper leaf sansho, but the size of the trunk is much larger.

接木の箇所もきれいです。

This is also a grafted tree, and the fusion point is very neat.

去年の６月に買った種無し柚子の「多田錦」に、もう蕾が出ています。購入時で２年生苗だったと思います。鉢植えで管理していたのを今年の春前に地植えにしたら、暖かくなって急に枝が増えました。今年は着果がなくても、咲くクセがつくだけでも満足です。
The seedless yuzu (variety called Tadanishiki) that I bought in June last year has already flower buds.  I kept it in a pot until early spring this year, when I planted in the ground.  Since the weather turned warm, a lot of new branches came out with flower buds.  I think it was a 2 years old plant when I got it.  It may be too young to produce fruits this year, but it is nice to see flowers at least.

リスボンレモンは去年の春まで２階バルコニーに置いていましたが、10号鉢で根詰まりを起こしていました。そこで、去年の春に根っこを整理し、地上部も根っことのバランスが取れるよう枝を切り戻して、全体的にダウンサイズしました。それが効果ありだったようで、今は小さい苗ながらびっしり蕾が出ています。花の香りは最高です。

This Lisbon Lemon used to be on the upstairs balcony, but it became root bound in a 30 cm pot.  So, I reduced the roots drastically in spring last year and also pruned the branches in order to achieve balance with the roots.  The downsizing had a good effect and, although a small tree now, it has a lot of flower buds.  The scent of the flowers is really sweet.

他に色々と庭仕事をしていると、近所のジャーマンピンシャーのリアちゃんが通りがかりました。リアちゃんもタイガも大興奮です。

In spite of my sciatica, I managed to do a lot of tasks with my plants.  As I was being busy, Leah, my neighbour's female German Pinscher passed by.  Both Leah and Taiga were super excited.

興奮の原因はワンコ同士の再会よりも、相手の飼い主と挨拶するため。お互いを素通りしてそれぞれに甘えています。

However, the pooches were excited to see each other's mom, rather than having a doggy reunion.  So, they passed by each other.

何とも可愛い。

Leah is soooo kawaii.

キリがないので、リアママが呼び戻しました。

There was no end to their excitement, so Leah's mom called her back.

オシリまで可愛い。この５センチほどの尻尾をピコピコ振って甘えてきます。

Even her botty is so cute.  Her tail is only about 5 cm, and she wags it furiously when she snuggles up to me.
