コガネムシ対策 How to beat Japanese beetles

今年も棗の幼果がコガネ成虫に齧られています。コガネムシ退治の方法で検索すると一般的に 出てくるのは容器に食器洗剤などの石鹸系の液体を入れて、それをコガネが着いている枝の下にかざして枝を揺さぶるとコガネが容器の中に落ちて来る。石鹸水で身動きがとれなくなるということだそうです。でも、うちの棗が受ける被害は夜のうちなので時間的に困難。そこで、いまひとつの方法として、ゼラニウムがあることを知りました。複数の米国の動画で言っていたのですが、コガネ成虫はゼラニウムを喜んで食べる。食べた後 体が麻痺して下に落ちるそうで、その間に収集・処分するそうです。

ということで、近所のJAをのぞいてみたら、何と１株だけ売れ残っていました。直径9cmのビニールポット入りの割には地上部が立派なので、苗の強健さがうかがえます。ついでに小さなビニールポットも買いましたが、これは発芽したクコの鉢上げ用です。

Jujube young fruits are getting eaten by Japanese beetles, as they were last year.  When I Google how to get rid of the beetles, the most frequently cited method is to hold an open plastic bottle with soapy water under the branch with beetles, shake the branch and wait for the beetles to drop into the bottle.  The soapy water immobilises the bugs.  The problem is that my jujube fruits are getting eaten mostly during the night and I find it impractical to stand outside in the dark - I will be getting bitten by hundreds of mosquitoes.  So, I looked up on the YouTube and found several US videos introducing the idea of using geranium plants.  Apparently, Japanese beetles love geranium plants and after eating them, they become paralysed and drop onto the ground.  I do not know for how long, but I will have the easy job of collecting and 'unaliving' them.

With this idea, I went to the nearby JA, although it was not the season for geranium plants.  Amazingly, there was just one leftover geranium.  The plant was in a 9cm diameter pot, but it looked quite robust even in the sweltering heat.  I also got a pack of plastic pots for repotting the black goji berries which germinated recently.

Among all the jujube varieties, the young fruits of the 'Emperor' are getting the worst damage by beetles.

大株に育って欲しいので、鉢も余裕のサイズにしました。

Hoping that the geranium plant would grow big, I repotted it in a large pot.

ラベルによると「暑さにも負けない」品種だそうです。

According to the label, this variety is quite heat tolerant.

さっそく皇帝の根元に置きました。

I placed the pot next to the Emperor jujube.

皇帝は地植えにしたとたん、上へ上へと伸びてしまい、摘心した後でも樹高は2ｍ以上になっています。横枝が短くて少ないですが、考えようによっては、下のほうの枝に他品種を高接ぎすればスペースを節約できます。

I planted the Emperor jujube in the ground in spring this year.  Since then, the tree has shot up without bothering to grow side branches.  Even after pinching the top, the tree is now taller than 2 meters.  Although the side branches are short, I could use them to graft different varieties to save space.

こちらはクコ。真ん中のポットは黒クコの発芽したものです。右側のポットは新たに種まきした赤クコで、まだ芽が出ていません。黒クコと同時に発芽した赤クコは、うっかりバケツ１杯の水を一気に空けた際、水の直撃を受けてポットの中身が全部飛び出してしまいました。なので再度 種まきしたものです。

Now to the goji berries.  The pot in the middle contains black goji berries.  The pot on the right contains red goji berry seeds that I sowed recently for the second time.  The red goji 

berries that germinated at the same time as the black ones were lost when I emptied a backet of water in the dark, without noticing that there was the pot.  The whole thing was washed away.  Thus, I had to start all over.

なんとか５個を個別のポットに植え替えました。最終的に３個が育てば十分すぎるくらいです。

I managed to repot 5 of them individually.  Ultimately, if 3 of these survive and grow, that would be more than enough.

今はこの状態です。門の横の壁の上に置いて、陽当たり・風通しを確保しています。以前は地面の上に置いていましたが、ウドンコ病にかかったのでここに移動させて解決しました。

this is how they look now.  I keep the pots on top of the wall next to the gate, where it is sunny and there is plenty of air movement.  When I used to keep them on the ground, the plants became mildewed.  Moving the pots where they are now solved the problem immediately.

イチゴ Strawberries

 スーパーの帰りに近所のJAを覗いてみたら、ワイルドストロベリーの苗が１ダース入荷したところでした。入荷ホヤホヤ苗にしては、かなりお疲れの様子です。ここまで葉っぱがクタッとしている原因は、

On my way home after the supermarket, I looked into the nearby JA where I saw a dozen of newly arrived wild strawberries.  However, in spite of being 'just arrived', they were looking beaten down.  The reason being

中間業者の管理不足のようです。カラカラの根鉢が縮こまって、器との間に大きな隙間ができるほど乾燥しています。それでもタフに生きているので、まともな環境を用意してやれば元気に育つはず、と思って買ってきました。

this extremely dry state.  I suspect that the middleman did not look after them properly.  The root ball is so dry and has shrunk that there was an alarming gap between the root ball and the wall of the pot.  In spite of this dire state, the plant was surviving.  So, I thought that if I provided it with a proper environment, it would grow vigorously.

なぜ「中間業者」の管理不足を疑うのかというと、植わっている鉢は小じゃれたテラコッタの鉢なので、育苗業者の思いが伝わってきました。

The reason why I suspected the middleman's handling was based on the fact that the plant came in a nice terracotta pot.  I felt that the original grower cared for it and gave it a proper pot.

蕾があちこちに出ています。収穫は春から秋までがメインですが、四季なり性があるようです。

The plant has several stems with flower buds, which means that I can expect to enjoy fruits for some time.   

品種名は「ゴールデンアレキサンドリア」、黄色っぽい葉っぱが特徴です。ランナーが出ないので、増やすには単に株分けすれば良いそうです。

This is a variety named 'Golden Alexandria' with light green leaves.  Its main fruiting season lasts from spring to autumn, with sporadic fruiting in other seasons, too.

鉢から出してみると、本当にカラッカラでした。

I took the roots out of the pot - there was no hint of moisture in the soil.

水はけのよい用土で植え替えしました。たっぷり水やりして暫くすると、さっきまでクタアッとしていた葉っぱが起き上がってきました。

I replanted it with well-draining soil and gave lots of water.  After a while, the withering leaves came back into life and they looked as they should.

真上から見ても、以前よりは密になっています。

Looking at it from above, I can hardly see the soil.

熟していた２個をさっそく試食。普通のイチゴの刺すような甘味ではなく上品な甘さで、香りがワイルドストローベリーらしい濃厚な香りでした。

I tasted the two fruits that were ripe.  They were not piercingly sweet like normal strawberries, but softer.  The flavour was very rich just like wild strawberries.

せっかくのテラコッタ鉢なので、またモミジの盆栽に挑戦してみようと思います。（去年のノムラモミジの発芽苗は、鉢が小さすぎたのか枯れてしまいました。）

I love the clay pot that came with the plant.  Not to waist it, I think I will start a bonsai maple tree again.  The two Nomura maple trees that germinated last year did not survive the hot summer 2025.  Perhaps the pot I used then was far too small, for a beginner.

今年の春に、完熟の実付き「べにほっぺ」苗を買いました。小さな苗でしたが、とても美味しい実だったので気に入りました。以来、ランナーが出て、今では来年用に２個の子苗ができています。

I bought a small strawberry plant with ripe fruits on it in spring this year.  The berries were delicious, so I have been looking after the plant.  It started growing runners and I have already made two new plants for next year.  The pots at the front are the baby plants, and the one at the back is the plant I got this spring.

親苗のほうは、最近またしても花茎が伸びてきて開花が始まりました。親苗は翌年以降は実つきが悪くなるそうなので、今年いっぱいで処分する予定です。

To my delight, the parent plant started growing a flower stem recently, and now berries are growing.  I will keep the parent up to the end of coming autumn, since I am told that they become much less productive from the 2nd year onwards.

こちらは子苗。ランナーが伸び続けるので、あと１苗作る予定です。

These are the baby plants for next year.  The runners keep coming out, so I plan to grow another new plant, making the total for next year 3.

門の横の素芯オニユリは今が開花ピークです。うちの植物は食べられるものがメインなので、ユリの花は貴重です（実際は、オニユリおよび山百合の球根は食べられますが、うちの素芯オニユリや紅筋山百合は花を愛でるマニア向けなので、食用という位置づけではありません）。

The spotless Oniyuri lilies are now at their peak of blooming.  Since I grow mainly fruit trees and edible plants in my place, these flowers are precious.  (Actually, the bulbs of Oniyuri and Yamayuri ARE edible, but the varieties I grow are rare so eating them is out of the question.)

多田錦柚子など Seedless Yuzu etc

 去年買った多田錦柚子に幼果が育っています。この苗はおととしの冬に買った多田錦が全く芽吹かず１年が経過して掘り出してみたら、根っこが無いことが分かったので、急遽他の店から取り寄せたものです。去年は鉢で養生して、今年の春先に地植えにしました。現在90cmほどの樹高です。まだまだチビ苗なので、最近勢いよく伸び始めたラズベリー苗に埋もれています。

The seedless yuzu, Tadanishiki, has young fruits growing.  This is the second plant - the first one I bought 2 years ago arrived with hardly any leaves, nor did it grow any new leaves.  When I dug it out in spring last year, the roots were rotten.  So, I got another one from a different store and this one is doing exceptionally well.  I kept it in a pot last year and planted it in the ground this spring.  It started growing a lot of new branches since then and had quite a few flowers.

地植えなので、このまま完熟まで行きそうな気がします。

Thanks to the benefits of growing in the ground, as opposed to a pot, I think these young fruits will grow to maturity.

その横に植わっているカラカラは、もう数年たっていますが今年も花さえ咲きませんでした。そのかわり、高接ぎしてある星タンゴールの枝に１個だけ実が着いています。これも、ここまで大きくなれば落果せずに行けそうです。

Next to the yuzu plant is Cara Cara orange tree which has been here for several years.  It continues to concentrate on growing the tree, instead of producing flowers.  However, the branch of a golden orange variety, Hoshi Tangor, that is grafted onto Cara Cara has one fruit for the first time.  I think this fruit is secure and stay until maturity.

門とカラカラの間に置いてある鉢植えの素芯オニユリも咲き始めました。年々 球根が増えるので、鉢の置き場に困ります。

Between the gate and Caracara, I have several pots of Spotless Tiger Lilies that have started to bloom.  The number of bulbs increases every year, and I am running out of space for the pots.

道の横に咲いているので、通りがかりの人たちが褒めて行きました。

These flowers are standing next to the road, and some passers-by have made kind remarks.

玄関横の鉢植えのは蕾の数が多いので、咲き終わるまでまだ楽しめそうです。

The ones in front of the porch are continuing to flower.  These are mature and large bulbs, so they have lots of flower buds to go through yet.

The thornless wild multiflora rose plant I bought in March this year looked like this then.

今ではこんなに大きくなりました。元々 樹実した苗が出荷のために枝を切り詰められた状態だったので、最近の毎日の雨で枝がビュンビュン伸びました。来年からの開花が期待できそうです。ここまで成長してもトゲ無しなので、良い買い物でした。

It has grown to this size.  To be fair, the plant was already mature when it was bought - the branches had been severely cut down close to the ground immediately before shipping out.  The warm and nurturing rain we are having has added to the growth.  With all these branches, I am optimistic that the plant will have flowers next spring.  Another encouraging thing is that the plant has remained thornless even at this size, so I made a lucky purchase.

昨日届いたクコの実から種を取り出して播いてみました。左が黒クコ、右が赤実のクコです。種播きの適期はあるのか分かりませんが、これで発芽しなくても他の季節に何度かトライします。

I extracted some seeds from the goji berries that arrived yesterday.  The pot on the left contains seeds of black goji berries, and the one on the right contains seeds from red goji berries.  It may not be the best season to sow seeds now, but I can keep trying in all seasons until I get a few plants.

クコの実 Goji Berries

 注文してあったクコの実が届きました。左は回族自治区産 寧夏クコの実300g、右はチベット産 黒クコの実200g入りです。おまけとして手前のレーズンも同封されていました。タイガは血液検査で「肝臓の値が高め」と言われたので、毎日３-４粒のクコをご飯に混ぜて与えることにしました。私はというと、視力のサポート効果を期待して毎日数粒をおかずに混ぜ込んでいます。

The goji berries that I ordered a few days ago arrived today.  The packet on the left contains 300g of red goji berries from Ningxia, and the packet on the right contains 200g of black goji berries from Tibet.  They also gave me a tiny packet of free raisins.  

The latest blood test on Taiga showed the liver level getting close to the upper limit of the safe band, so I have decided to give her a few red goji berries every day by adding them to her food.  As to myself, I have been eating several red goji berries a day in the hope of maintaining good eyesight.  

今回注文したお店のサイトでは、赤クコについて「大実」を謳っていたのですが、実際に大きいものを測ってみると、長さが22ミリもありました。パン生地用に今までいろんなお店で寧夏クコの乾燥果を買っていますが、こんなに大粒のは初めてです。

I bought these from a shop I recently found on the internet.  Their sales pitch was 'large red goji berries', and they were indeed larger than any I had tried before (the berry in the photo measured 22mm).

黒クコを注文したのは今回が初めて。黒クコについてはネット上でワンコへの影響に関する情報が見つからないので、私専用として扱います。早速ぬるま湯でお茶にしてみました。この写真は溶け始め。

I have never tried black goji berries before.  Since I could not find any information concerning their effect on dogs, I will keep these berries to myself.  

I decided to make tea with lukewarm water.  The photo below shows the berries' colour starting to come out.

ほんの数粒を入れただけですが、スプーンでかき回すと綺麗な青紫色になりました。

I only put in a few berries but, when I stirred the tea with a spoon, the colour turned into a beautiful purplish blue.

甘味はないので、紅茶などに砂糖を入れる習慣のある人には物足りないかも。いろんなハーブティーを飲んでいる私にはストレートでちょうど良いです。

The tea had no sweet taste and if you are used to adding sugar to your black tea, this one may taste bland.  However, since I drink all sorts of herb teas, drinking this one straight is just fine for me.

ユリなど Lilies etc

紅筋山百合および素芯オニユリが開花しています。

The typhoon No.7 seems to be gone at last.  The Red Yamayuri and Spotless Tiger Lily have started to flower.

この紅筋山百合は先の冬にオクで球根を落札したものです。

I bought the bulb of this Red Yamayuri during last winter on the Yahoo! auction site.

出品時の開花写真では花びらがピンクのものが載っていましたが、実際に咲いてみると白地に赤い筋でした。6月19日の記事の花と似ているけど、今日の花は赤い筋に黄色っぽい部分が全く入りません。

なお、オリエンタルユリに「ディジー」というのがありますが、そちらは山百合とは異なり強健で育てやすいそうです。対して、紅筋山百合は気難しくて、今年咲いているものは３回目の挑戦です。球根を買ってから２シーズンしか持ったことありません。

The photo on the auction site showed flowers with pink petals and red steaks, but these actual flowers have white petals.  They look similar to the flower shown on the posting of June 19th.  However, these current flowers have solid red streaks whereas the previous ones had red streaks with a little bit of yellow.

For the record, there is an Oriental lily variety called 'Dizzy' which is said to be very tough and easy to look after.  In contrast, Red Yamayuri plants are very particular, and I have failed twice in the past.  Those Red Yamayuri plants I had in the past lived and flowered for 2 seasons, after which the bulbs simply disappeared in the soil.

こちらは素芯オニユリ。球根が充実すると、１本の茎に着く花の数が年々増えてきます。

These are spotless tiger lilies.  When the bulbs are mature, the number of flowers per stem increases every year.

種から育てているローゼル。これは「パープル」に分類されるタイプで、ガク全体が赤くなります。去年 苗を買って育てたのは「レッド」のタイプで、ガクの底辺を囲むフリルのような部分が緑色だったので、今年用に全体が赤くなるパープルの種を買いました。

ローゼルの種は播いたあと1週間ほどで発芽が始まりましたが、その後は全然育ちませんでした。よほど猛暑が好きな植物らしく、梅雨前に暑い天気が続いてやっと成長し始めました。

This is a roselle that I have grown from a seed.  It belongs to the 'purple' category - the whole calyx becomes red.  The roselle plant I bought last year was 'red' and its calyx had a green base, which I did not like.  So, I bought 'purple' variety seeds for this year.

When I sowed the seeds, they started to germinate only after one week.  However, I saw little change after that.  It seems that they love extreme heat and they wait until the climate is right before they start growing.  So, when we had a hot spell right before the rainy season started, it grew quickly to this height.  Now that we are in the middle of the rainy season and daily maximum temperature hovers around 25℃, this plant is doing nothing.

こちらは7日前に掘り上げたナツメのひこばえです。連日の雨天のおかげで萎れることなく生存しています。鉢上げの際 地面の上に露出した部分は相変わらず白いですが、葉っぱの色が若干濃い緑色になってきたので、このまま育ちそう。

This is the jujube sucker that I potted 7 days ago.  Thanks to the continuous rain since then, the young plant has not withered.  Although the bottom part that got exposed to the air when I potted it has not become woody and remains white, the colour of the leaves has become darker green, which gives me hope that this plant may survive.
