ハーブ苗 Herbs

 練馬の渋谷園芸本店へ行ってきました。去年の５月頃以来です。本当は秋に涼しくなったらまた行く予定でしたが、10月上旬に坐骨神経痛を患ってムリ。それがまる３か月かけて治ったようなので、真冬ですが何かおもしろいものがあるか見に行きました。３か月間、半寝たきり生活をしている間、Youtubeで健康に役立つハーブや山野草に関する米国の動画を毎日見ていたので、今年は色々なハーブを試してみようと思います。

ただし、自転車ではるばる練馬を目指している間に、道のり半分もいかないうちから激しく後悔し始めました。脚の激痛が戻ってきたのです。お店に着くと片足を引きずりながら歩き回るしまつでした。最近、夕方のジョギングを再開したのですっかり治った気分でした。

まず、クリスマスローズの棚をチェック。

I visited the large plant shop in Nerima for the first time since May last year.  I had intended to go there once the weather got cooler in autumn, but I was hit by sciatica.  It took me 3 months to recover from it, and I was getting eager to see what they had although it is the middle of winter right now.  While I was half bed-ridden for 3 months, I watched many overseas Youtube videos about herbs and wild plants.  So, I was getting impatient to start collecting them.

However, as I was cycling to Nerima, I began to bitterly regret - my sciatica came back.  I could not believe it, since I had started jogging almost every evening and feeling healthy.  When I finally reached the store, I was limping heavily.

Anyway, I first checked the Christmas rose section.

大輪のゴールド苗です。かなりの美花。かつての私なら即つかまえて直ぐにチェックアウトしたはずですが、何とかガマンしました。２年前に買ったゴールド苗が巨大株になってもてあましている状態です。でも、うっとりしながら数分間ながめました。

This one caught my eyes.  Such a beautiful flower and so large and showy, too.  If it were a few years ago, I would have grabbed it and checked out immediately.  However, the gold flower Christmas rose plant that I bought 2 years ago has grown into a huge one and taking up a lot of space.  So, I resisted buying and only gazed at it like in a dream.

Having selected a few herbs, I went inside to check out, where I saw....

これ。赤い字で「値下げしました」とあります。近くにいた店員さんによると、色素を吸わせているのではなく遺伝子組み換えの品種なので、毎年この色の花が咲くそうです。かなりの大株で見ごたえあり。

this Phalaenopsis orchid.  In red writing, it says 'Price reduced'.  According to the shop assistant, this is a genetically modified variety, and it will produce flowers of this colour every year.  Considering its uniqueness and the size of the plant, the price seems reasonable.  The blue flower Phalaenopsis that I saw in the past was created by feeding/watering blue pigment to the plant, which meant that the flowers from next year onwards would be white.

で、私が持ち帰ったのは極めて日常的なもの。真冬で品ぞろえが乏しかったので、4月頃にまた行って他のものも買うことにしました。

In contrast, what I brought home were utterly mundane.  The herb corner's selection was very poor since it was not the season for them, so I will be going back in April to get more varieties.

ボリジは花をハーブティーに、葉っぱは炒め物に使えるそうです。ケールは苦味が少ない品種だそうで、食べやすければ毎年育てたいです。

The seeds are borage and kale.  Borage was totally unknown to me.

苗は、左から、ラムズイヤーのセージ、レモンマリゴールド、ディル。セージとマリゴールドは、花をティーに、葉っぱは肉料理の香り付けに使います。ディルは葉や種をガーキンなどのピクルス作りに利用します。

The small plants are, from left to right, lamb's ear sage, lemon marigold, and dill.  These are not really established in Japanese cooking.

この季節の苗は売れ残りの古株なのか、鉢の中で根っこがギチギチに詰まっていました。

The plants are basically leftovers from last season, so the roots were fully grown.

水はけを確保したいので、小さな鉢でスタートです。

They are starting with small pots so as to ensure good drainage.

以上のほかに、最近ヤフオクで赤ツメクサの種も買いました。クローバーをハーブとして育てる予定です。花を乾燥させてお茶にすると効能があるそうです。

In addition, I recently bought seeds of red clovers.  The flowers will be dried and made into tea.

サンシュユ Japanese cornel

 今朝の散歩で久しぶりに石神井川の向こう岸、早宮地区を歩いているうちに、サンシュユの木がある菜園の横を通りかかりました。偶然、地主の方が車でやって来ていたので話はじめました。サンシュユの葉っぱがほぼ落ちていて、赤い実が朝日のなかキラキラ輝いていました。実はかなり落ちてしまっていたのですが何とか実付きの枝を切り取っていただけました。
This morning, we walked through the district on the other side of the Shakujii River.  As we passed a vegetable farm, it so happened that the owner had come to work the land (he lives far away and rarely comes to the farm).  In the corner of the farm field, there is a Japanese cornel tree - a wild species.  The leaves had almost all gone and what was left of the fruits were sparkling in the morning light.  Although not many fruits were left at this time of the year, the owner managed to find a few branches.

実の長さは1.5cmちょい。園芸店で見た苗の実より若干大きいです。

At about 1.5cm long, these fruits were slightly larger than those I had seen in a plant shop.

殆どの実はまだ果肉が固いので、食べてみると味のほうは予想どおり渋みが残っていました。渋と酸味が強烈でしたが、念のため糖度計を当ててみると、何と45度。ほんとうかな。糖度計が壊れているのでは、と疑ってしまいます。でも、うちのミカンなどに充てると十数度になるので、もしかしたらこのサンシュユの場合 人間の舌では感じ取れない糖度？

Most of the fruits were still firm and when I tasted one, it was astringent and sour.  I was curious to know the sugar content - according to my Brix meter, it was 45.0%, which made me wonder if the gadget was broken.  However, when I use it on home-grown tangerines it indicates figures around 15％, so it must be working.  

樹上で果皮がシワシワになっていた実もあったので、その果肉をつぶして糖度を計ったら45.7度でした。でも実際に食べてみると、やはり渋くて酸っぱい。米国のYoutuberの話では、常温で追熟させると渋みが抜けるとのこと。一方、アゼルバイジャンの寒村で自家栽培の作物を使った料理チャンネルを運営している人によると、砂糖と一緒に煮ると渋みを除けるそうです。私は種を蒔きたいのでボイルせずに、常温で追熟の方をやってみようと思います。

There were a few fruits with wrinkles on the outside.  I crushed the flesh and applied the Brix meter, which indicated 45.7%.  When I tasted the flesh, it was just as astringent and sour as the first one.  According to a US Youtuber, the fruits should become less astringent when left to ripen in the room.  Also, according to a person running a cooking channel in Azerbaijan, you can get rid of the astringency by boiling the fruits.  I think I will let them ripen in the room, since I want to sow the seeds.

来年用の蕾を比較。サンシュユのほうは球に近いまん丸なのに対し、パイオニアのは扁平っぽくて軍配を連想させます。

今年の春に買ったパイオニアには２個の蕾が着いていますが、去年の春からあるカザンラクはゼロ。不都合なことに、カザンラクは自家結実性があるけどパイオニアは異品種の花粉が必要だそうです。

Comparing the flower buds for next spring - the flower buds on the Japanese cornel are almost spherical whereas the flower bud on my Pioneer is flat like a fan.

I got the Pioneer this spring as a 30cm plant and it already has two flower buds, whereas the Kazanlak from last year has no flower buds yet.  Unfortunately, it is Kazanlak that self-pollinates while Pioneer needs a pollinator.

ハト Pigeon

 昨日は一日中雨だったので、雨上がりの今朝 スズメたちのためにエサを出してから早朝散歩に出ました。餌台（植木鉢の受け皿）にシードを撒いてから、種の入った筒とフタをカンカン鳴らすとスズメたちがほどなく集まってきます。

でも散歩から帰って私たちを出迎えたのは、ハトでした。今日は１羽だけ。いつもは２羽でやってきてスズメたちを追い払ったら、うずくまるようにしてシードを食べ始めるので、スズメ贔屓の私には、ウーンという訪問者です。最初だけ私と目を合わせますが、

It rained all day yesterday - not a nice day for wild birds to find food.  So, this morning, I put out some seeds for sparrows before we went out for our early morning walk.  When I make rattling noises with the seed container and its lid, sparrows know that there is food on the table.

However, when we came home from our walk, we were greeted by a pigeon.  A solitary pigeon - usually, they come in pairs.  Pigeons chase away sparrows from the seed table, and they crouch down to eat, leaving no space for little birds.  Pigeons that come to my garden are not shy.  As usual, this one looked me in the eye only at first, but then

continued eating the seeds as if I was not there.

冬は１羽で行動するのか、丸まった背中を見ると哀愁だだよう雰囲気なので、そっとしておきました。

Did it come alone since it is not a nesting season?  It looked lonely and pitiful with its hunched back, so I did not disturb it.

黄葉の見納め Last of autumn colours

 これは昨日の天気が良かったときの都立城北公園です。

日の光を浴びてイチョウの葉がキラキラと輝いて綺麗でした。

Leaves of ginkgo trees were sparkling in the sun, as they moved in the slightest breeze.

公園の上のほうから石神井川の対岸を眺めます。

We went up to the top of the hill to look across the Shakujii River.

対岸ではかつての草地の地下に洪水の調整池を建設中。

They are constructing underground facilities to take in flood waters as and when it occurs.

昨日と打って変わって今日は寒い一日。冷えるともろに坐骨神経痛に影響します。

今朝の散歩は隣地区の6丁目を歩きました。マンション横のサザンカが綺麗。

In contrast to the warm weather of yesterday, we had cold winds all day today.  Not a kind weather for my sciatica.

We walked in the neighbouring district this morning.  There was a beautiful sasanqua tree growing next to a block of flats.

高稲荷神社ふもとの公園ではイチョウの木の半分以上がぼうずになっていました。

We came to the park at the foot of a hill, where more than half of the ginkgo trees had lost their leaves.

菊の季節 Chrysanthemum season

 庭の菊が満開に近くなりました。これは玄関前の食用菊「松風」。食用菊とはいっても、せっかく咲いた花がもったいなくて毎年ほとんど利用せずに眺めて終わります。

The chrysanthemums are almost in full bloom.  This bunch in the photo below is an edible variety called Matsukaze.  Although an edible variety, I love them too much to actually pick and eat them.  So, I end up just admiring them every year.

今年はピンクの食用菊がほぼ全滅状態なので、道路側から見ると黄色の花しか目にはいりません。

I also try to grow pink edible chrysanthemums, but they are too delicate and not doing well this year.  As a result, when looked at from the street, only the yellow flowers are visible.

門の外に置いてあるのは2,3年前に買った厚物の菊。草丈30cmくらいの茎に１輪だけの見事な花が咲いていました。それ以降はこのように自然体。年々 株が大きくなっています。

The plant placed outside of the gate is the one I bought a few years ago, as a large, single flower variety.  It had a huge flower at the top of a 30cm stem.  Since then, the plant has been growing in a natural way with multiple flowers.

自然体だと花の形は崩れるけど、花数が多いほうが賑やかで好みです。

When left in a natural state, the shape of the flowers becomes disorderly, but I find them lively and happy with many flowers.

写真左手前の株は去年買った「ダリア咲き」の菊、のはずが

The nearest plant on the left of the photo is the one I bought last year, as 'dahlia' chrysanthemum.  However,

どう見てもダリア咲きではありません。

they do not look like dahlias at all.

その背後に置いてある懸崖鉢の株は食用菊の「阿房宮」。

The plant behind the 'dahlia' chrysanthemum is a famous edible variety that is from Aomori Prefecture.

中輪咲きで観賞用にも適していると思います（やはり勿体なくて眺めるだけ）。

The flowers are medium-sized, and they are good as ornamental variety, too.

オレンジも色づき始めています。玄関に向かって通路の右側に植わっているのは、大実柚子を中間台にしたミネオラとモロのオレンジ。まだ実の数が少ないので、個々の実のサイズは左側に植わっているモロ+ミネオラの実よりも大きくて立派です。

The oranges are getting colourful.  The small tree in front of the porch, on the right, is a Yuzu tree with Moro and Mineola grafted on it.  Since there are not many fruits on this tree, the sizes of the fruits are larger than those on the mature Moro tree which is located on the left.

こちらは左側のモロと、高接ぎしてあるミネオラ。色づき始めたばかりなので、区別がつきにくいですが、年を越す頃にはモロの果皮が真っ赤になるので分かります。

This is the Moro tree on the left, with Mineola branches grafted on it.  As they have just started to turn orange, the difference between the two varieties is not obvious.  However, from January onwards, Moro will start to turn dark red.

天気が良いので明るいうちに公園へ行きました。びっこをひくほど足が痛い日は目立たないように暗くなってから午後の散歩に出ていますが、今日は調子がよかったです。坐骨神経痛が始まってもう一月以上ストレッチ運動をしています。全身が温まっている状態なら痛みなしで歩けるけど、寒さが大敵で外に出たとたん逆戻りです。なので、開き直って今年の冬は痛みと付き合う覚悟です。初夏の暑い気候になれば、きっと治ると楽観しています。

As it was a relatively warm day today, we went to the park while it was light.  When the pain in my leg is too much and I walk with a limp, we go out after dark for our afternoon walk.  Today was a good day.  My sciatica started more than a month ago and I have been doing exercises.  When my whole body is warm staying indoors, I can walk without pain, but the moment I go out into the cold, the pain comes back.  So, I am resigned to the idea that I have to live with this for the whole of this winter.  I feel optimistic that once the weather turns warm next year, I will be all right.

気づけばタイガの口の周りが随分と白くなっていました。現在12歳半です。

Taiga is getting white around her mouth - she is 12 1/2 years old now.

全体的な毛ヅヤは良いし、散歩中に知り合いのワンコに出会うと自分から遊びに誘うので、気持ちは若いようです。

Nevertheless, she has a shiny coat, and she is young in her heart and invites other dogs to play when she meets familiar faces.
