公園で At the Park

 公園に着くと、古代家のある林へ上がって行きました。この公園で私が最も気に入っている場所です。

We walked through the wooded area where there was a reconstructed ancient dwelling.  This area is my best favourite place in this park.

紅葉の時期になるとポカポカ暖かく乾燥していて、何ともリラックスできる林です。この古代家は奈良時代に遡るそうですが、都から遠く離れたこの東の地では未だに竪穴式住居に住んでいたということでしょうか。その頃はどんな樹木が植わっていたのか興味あります。

When the leaves turn red and yellow, the weather is usually dry and warm, and it is most relaxing to walk through these woods.  The reconstructed dwelling stands on top of a hill and I always wonder how people managed to live in ancient times.  The Shakujii River runs at the food of the hill.  It is now a 10-meter deep concrete structure, but before it came into the current state several decades ago, it used to be a shallow natural river and flooded every time it rained.  So, in ancient times, inhabitants must have chosen to live on top of the hill in order to avoid floods.

Next to the woodland, there is a sports ground where elementary school children were running with their coach.

グラウンドの周りはジョギングコースになっています。ワンコは入れないので、以前はタイガをベンチに括り付けて一人で走っていました。今はタイガの夕方散歩の前に、近所をちょろっと走ってくるだけ。

Surrounding the sports ground, there is a jogging course.  Dogs are not allowed, so I used to run alone, having tied Taiga to a bench.  Now, I no longer have that much energy, and I have a short run in my neighbourhood before the evening walk with Taiga.

The ginkgo trees are still green.  I love them when they are bright yellow.

初めて会う子。ゴールデンレトリーバーのレオ君で、もうすぐ５歳だそうです。こんなに大きくても他所のワンコが怖いそうで、うまくタイガを避け続けていました。

We met a new face: a Golden Retriever named Leo, who will be turning 5 soon.  He is such a big boy but he is afraid of other dogs.  So, he maneuvered to avoid facing Taiga.

でも、タイガが飼い主さんに挨拶をし始めると、後ろへ回ってちゃっかり臭い嗅ぎ。

However, he caught the moment when Taiga greeted his mom and took a sniff.

林の横の広場ではボーダーコリーのシェリー君が朝の訓練をしていました。飼い主さんがフリスビーを投げてくれるのを今か今かと待って、集中力がすごいです。

In the field nearby, Shelly, a male Border Collie, was doing his usual morning training.  He intently watches his dad who was about to throw the frisbee.

Just when his dad started to move, Shelly goes around dad's back.

最初にジャンプしたときはフリスビーの位置が高すぎたので届きませんでしたが、

When he made his first jump, the frisbee was too high for him to reach.

一旦 着地して頭の上を行くフリスビーを目で追いかけながら、

After landing on his feet, he kept his eyes on the frisbee which was flying over his head,

遂にキャッチしました。その間、１秒くらいの出来事。何という運動能力。

and caught it successfully.  The whole thing took place in a matter of a second.

なぜか、私たちの方を見ながら戻って来る。

For some reason, he comes back looking at us,

まるでタイガに「すごいだろう」と言わんばかり。そして私には「ちゃんと撮った？」

as if to say to Taiga "Can you match this?", and to me "Did you get that on camera?".

フィンガーライムなど Finger lime etc

 午後に卵入りの甘いパンを焼きました。涼しい気候になった今、就寝直前に材料を混ぜてひと晩 台所の室温で寝かせる製法に切り替えました。朝、生地は練らずに引っ張って張力を出すやり方です。卵が入っているので良く膨らみました。表面についている粒々はキビで、噛み潰すとほんのり香ばしい。

I baked sweet egg buns in the afternoon.  In this cool weather, I mix the ingredients just before I go to bed, for the first proofing.  In the morning, the dough is well risen and I only have to stretch it twice with a few hours' interval.  For the garnish, I sprinkled roasted millet which gives off a nice flavour when I crunch it.

パンを冷ましているあいだ、近所のJAを覗いてみました。もう山茶花が棚に並ぶ時期です。

While waiting for the bread to cool, I went to the nearby JA to see the plants.  It is already the season for camellia sasanquas.

蕾がたくさん着いていて長く楽しめそうですが、うちには鉢植えを置くスペースも残っていないので断念。

The plant has lots of flower buds, promising a long flowering season.  Unfortunately, there is hardly any space left in my place, even for a pot of sasanqua.

ここまで育てるのに数年かかったはずですが、値段はコレ↓。店員さんの話によると、「人間、食べなければならないので、花より団子で野菜の値段は上がっても花木はさっぱり」だそうです。

To grow the tree to the current state, it must have taken several years even from a cutting.  Yet, the price is so low, and it makes me sad.  The shop assistant told me that vegetable prices have gone up since we have to eat, but prices of flowering trees remain the same since they are not edible.

シオンの仲間のコーナーもチエック。友禅菊などいろいろありますが、

I looked into the corner for Tatarian asters - so many new varieties.

ノコンギクはこれだけ。品種名の表示は無かったけど、赤味を帯びた紫色と、花びらが短く花の中心が占める割合が大きいことから、「藍空」という品種だと思います。

This was the only variety they had of Japanese wild asters.  Judging from the colour of the petals (purple with a red tinge), short petals, and disproportionately large centre, I think it is a variety called 'Aizora'.

うちの濃い紫色のノコンギクは咲き始めたばかり。

最近、フィンガーライムのパープルブリスの実の色が、黒から薄茶色がかってきました。

The remaining two fruits on the 'Purple Bliss' finger lime used to be jet black on the outside, but now they are turning into light brown.

写真の色にだいぶ近づいてきた感じ。もしかして遂に完熟？夏に試し撮りしたときは、話にならないほど早すぎでした。

They look rather similar to the fruit in the picture.  Although I don't know how accurate the colour in the picture is, does this mean that the fruits are at last ripe?

そこで2個とも採取して、ついでにベランダのミアローズも２個取って比較対象にしました。どちらも石のように硬い。

I picked both of the remaining Purple Bliss.  I also picked two from the Mia Rose plant, for comparison.  They are both as hard as rocks.

半割にしてみると、パープルブリスはまだまだ未熟でした。ミアローズは前回よりかなり色が濃くなって、ピンクというよりは赤実。

When I cut them into half, Purple Bliss was far from being ripe.  As to Mia Rose, the colour has deepened since last time - it is almost red, rather than pink.

白い容器に絞り出すと、パープルブリスは果肉よりも種のほうが目立つ。ミアローズは綺麗な赤色で、しかも種が少ない。

The Purple Bliss was full of seeds, apart from the fact that the flesh is too pale.  With Mia Rose, the colour of the flesh was deep and beautiful, and there were hardly any seeds.

パープルブリスは無視して、ミアローズを手作りヨーグルトに乗せてみました（利用法を探すのに必死）。

Forgetting Purple Bliss, I placed Mia Rose on my home-made yogurt (desperately trying to find ways to use).  However, I couldn't muster courage to eat it as it was, so

上の状態だけでは食べる勇気がなかったので、ハチミツを垂らして食欲をそそりました。実際に食べてみると、フィンガーライムがちょっぴり爽やかで悪くない。でも、正直、ライムが入っていなくても全く困らない。

I added some honey to make it more enticing.  When I ate it, the finger lime flesh added fresh citrus taste, and it was actually not bad.  However, to be honest, I wouldn't have missed its presence.

朝散歩など Morning walk etc

 今朝のタイガは階段の踊り場でけだるそうに、私が朝食・シャワーを終えるのを待っていました。

出かける準備ができて声をかけても面倒くさそう。

Having got myself ready to go out, I called her name but she looked reluctant to move.

公園に着くとカリンの実が色づき始めていました。

観賞価値はあります。

Such an ornamental tree - looking at the fruits gives me a satisfying feeling.

公園からの帰り道で出会った子。もうすぐ５歳になるケン君だそうです。いま終わったばかりのウンチを飼い主さんが拾っているあいだ、近づいてくる私たちを動じることもなく見ていました。

On our way home, we met a new face - a male Maltese, named Ken, who will be turning 5 soon.  He had just done his business and his mom was picking it up.  All the while, he looked at us calmly as we approached him.

飼い主さんによるとカメラが嫌いでなかなかカメラ目線の写真が撮れないそうですが、ちゃんとカメラのほうを見づづけてくれました。

According to his mom, Ken hates the camera, and she can never take good pictures of him.  Fortunately, he was co-operative with me.

その後も川沿いを歩いていると、ハナミズキの葉が綺麗に紅葉していました。

As we walked along the river, one of the flowering dogwood was already turning bright red.

木によってバラツキが大きく、まだ葉っぱが青いものもあります。花の色と関係はあるのかな、など根拠もなく想像してしまいました。この写真の木は毎年綺麗な赤い花（厳密にはガク）をつけます。

Some other flowering dogwood trees along this footpath are still very green.  I wonder if the colour of flowers has anything to do with how early the leaves turn into autumn colours.  This particular tree gets red flowers.

家の近くまで来ると、ご近所のお屋敷に植木屋さんたちが入っていました。門のところの黒松の剪定を始めるところのようです。うちのヒガンバナは、こちらの出身です。

Our neighbour had gardeners coming in for autumn pruning.  They were starting with the black pine tree beside the gate.  The spider lilies in my garden originally came from this place.

変わって、うちの門前。食用菊の十五夜は２鉢とも咲いています。

Back home, the second pot of 'Jugoya' edible chrysanthemum is starting to flower (left).

今年は花の色を交互にアレンジしてあります。左側でいうと、手前の十五夜の黄花、その次がメルカリでノコンギクとして売られていたピンクの花、階段の上が黄色の食用菊の松風、その奥は濃い紫のノコンギク、そして玄関前の黄色の松風。

This year, I have arranged different colours of chrysanthemums and asters.  On the left, starting with the one in front, the yellow Jugoya chrysanthemum, pink aster, yellow edible chrysanthemum called Shofu, deep purple wild aster, and, in front of the porch, the yellow Shofu chrysanthemum.

でも、今年の秋の花で一番の楽しみは、ノコンギクの桃山です。

However, this autumn, my best favourite flower is this wild aster with pink flowers.

今は頼りない草姿だけど、来年は独立の鉢でしっかり育てます。

It looks delicate for now, but I plan to grow this in a large pot next year so that it will not have to compete for space with other plants.

日南の姫 Early ripening tangerine

 早生ミカンの日南の姫（ひなのひめ）は3個生っていて、そのうちの１個がだいぶ色づいてきたので試食することにしました。

The early ripening tangerine variety called 'Hina-no-hime' has 3 fruits this year, having recovered from the state of near death a few years ago.  One of these fruits is looking ripe enough so I decided to try it.

私がミカンのために外に出ただけなのに、退屈したタイガが無理やり出てきました。今日は何度もにわか雨が降った日でしたが、このときもザアザア降りの最中。まるで真夏のような温かい雨です。

I only came out for the tangerine but Taiga, being so bored inside, managed to come out with me.  We had frequent showers through today and it was raining again when we came out.  Moreover, the rain was warm as if we were still in summer.

匂いを嗅がせると、

When I let her take a sniff at the fruit,

ソッポを向いてしまいました。ワンコは柑橘類が嫌い。

she immediately turned her head away.  Dogs do not like citrus fruits.

半割にすると、中心の白い部分が以外と大きい。味は、まあ、早生種なので極甘は期待できません。この実の場合、糖度は10度にも達しませんでした。

I cut it into half.  The taste was rather mild - neither very sweet nor sour.  After all, I should not expect too much from an early ripening variety.  When I measured the sugar content, it fell short of 10%.

今日のタイガ Taiga as usual

 これは朝散歩から帰って、つまらなさそうに寝そべっているところ。今朝の公園は人間にとって肌寒いほどの天気だったので、反対にワンコには快適な朝。とにかく散歩を長引かせようと、タイガは公園で私をあちこち引っ張り回りました。

帰宅して、私がリビングに用があって入ると、こうやって上目遣いで「退屈」を訴えてきます。

Taiga with her sulking look in her eyes, after coming home from her morning walk.  It was quite chilly in the park for humans, but very invigorating for dogs.  She tried to prolong the walk leading me into many directions.

At home, she puts on this melancholy look every time I enter the living room to show how bored she is.

お昼ご飯の後、近所でのオシッコ散歩時も、とぼけた顔でそのまま長い散歩にしようと試みます。真夏の間は高温のアスファルトがきつくてそそくさと帰宅していたので、今はその埋め合わせのよう。家の前の食用菊「十五夜」が少し咲き進んできました。

After lunch, we go out for her peeing in the neighbourhood.  During the summer months, the metalled road is too hot and she used to turn back right after her business.  Now, she tries to make it into a regular long walk.  

The edible chrysanthemum in front of the house is looking prettier.

道を通りがかる人たちに褒められると嬉しい。

Passers-by have been complimenting.

だんだんとスーパーのパック入り菊らしくなってきました。

This is the most popular variety of edible chrysanthemum in the supermarket.

ノコンギク「桃山」も少しずつ開花しています。

The wild Japanese aster with pink flowers also looking better than before.

この品種は本当に儚い。「桃山」が欲しくて北海道と四国の山野草に熱心なお店に数年前からリクエストしてありますが、いつまでたっても「品切れ」の表示になっていました。それが去年の秋にメルカリで見たときは目を疑うほどで、即座にポチりました。その一度限りの出品だったので、今ある苗は絶対に絶やしたくない。

There are several cultivated varieties of wild aster but this one is really delicate.  Since several years ago, I have been requesting a shop in Hokkaido and Shikoku for this variety, but they still have the "sold" sign on their site.  So, when a private seller offered this on the site used by individuals, I snatched it right away.  That was the only time I ever saw this variety.

またしても退屈を訴えるタイガ。家の中に入って足ふきが終わっても玄関から動かず、私が通りがかると少し顔をこちらに向けて圧をかけてきます。無視します。

After getting inside and having her feet cleaned, Taiga remained in the porch.  Every time I passed by, she turned her head slightly towards me.  If she thinks she is effectively sending me a message, I am not buying it.
