サクサクのアップルパイ　Apple Pie with Puff Pastry

リンゴ果肉の下にアーモンドクリームを敷いたアップルパイです。パイの生地はミルフィーユ生地と同じ作り方で、仕上がりは薄紙を重ねたようなフワフワになります。

Apple pie with almond cream underneath the apples. The pastry is the same as for millefeuille and very fluffy. Please see on the Youtube.

公園で　At the park

最近、一日おきに雨と晴天が繰り返されていましたが、今日は晴天の日でした。しかも、明日も晴れの予報なので、久しぶりに爽やかな週末になりそうです。外は日差しが強いけど風は冷たいので、気づかないうちに日焼けしてしまいそうです。四中近くの草地に着くと、ゴロウがいました。

The weather has been alternating between rain and blue sky every day. Today, it was the turn of the blue sky. The sun was strong but the breeze was very cold.

他にも２頭いましたが、みんな同じ町内のワンコたちです。練馬区は小学校のラウドスピーカーで、不要不急の外出を控えるよう毎日呼び掛けているので、外に出てこうやって会えるのは本当に珍しいです。

When we arrived at the park, Taiga's boy friend, Goro, was there together with 2 other dogs. All 4 of them live in the same area but I have not seen the Jack Russells for a very long time. The local government continues to request residents to refrain from going out unless absolutely necessary, and it is affecting our lifestyle a lot.

天気が良いのでお肉屋さん横の草地まで足を延ばしました。コロナ以前は、この草地で小学生たちがサッカーの練習をしたり、犬と飼い主たちが遊んだりして、雑草が生えるひまもないほど賑わっていました。

We took Taiga and Goro to a field at the other side of the park. This place used to be full of small children practicing soccer, and dogs and their owners playing, with the result that the ground was covered with bare patches. Now it is looking quite green.

タイガもゴロウも何か物足りなげ。

帰りに四中横の草地で一休みしていたら、シュナウザーのマノンがやってきました。マノンは、私がマノンに甘いということを良く知っているので、遠慮がないです。

As we were having a rest before heading home, Manon, a female Schnauzer, arrived. She knows that I am a sucker where she is concerned, so she started asking for a treat.

私の膝に前足を乗せてオヤツを催促してきます。細長いオヤツを少しずつ千切りながら食べさせるのですが、私の指先に口をくっつけたままで次々と食べていきます。タイガもオヤツをもらおうと近づいてくると、マノンはガンを飛ばしていました。

As I was breaking the treat into small pieces for her, she had her mouth glued to my fingers so that no-one else could cut in. When Taiga approached, hoping for some morsels, Manon gave her a dirty look.

日南の姫ミカン　Tangerine

南向きバルコニーに置いてある、ミカンの日南の姫が色づいてきたので1個試し採りしました。

Early-ripening variety called 'Hinano-hime'. I picked the orange-coloured one to see if it was ready.

半割にしてみると、果皮にまだ緑色が残っていますが、栽培農家ならこの程度で収穫して、２，３日置いてから出荷すると思います。

念のため糖度計を出して測ってみました。15.7度の表示です。実際に食べてみると、酸味が少ないので若干物足りない印象です。でも、日照不足の夏を過ごしたあとの初成りの年なので良くできたほうだと思います。

The Brix sugar content was 15.7% - quite high considering the sugar content of high-end varieties you can buy in the shop tends to be around 12%.

パッションフルーツの３番目の蕾が今日のお昼頃に開きました。オシベの花粉が熟すまでに数時間かかったので、人工授粉は夕方の７時過ぎでした。２番目の花も受粉後に閉じてしまいましたが、これが何を意味するのか検討もつきません。グアバなら直ぐに子房が膨らんでくるので分かりやすいです。

The third flower on the passion fruit plant opening today. Due to the cold weather (the temperature at noon was 11℃), it took several hours for the pollen to become ready.

４番目の蕾はまだ小さいので、寒さで開花までいかないかも。

The fourth flower bud is still very tiny.

フィンガーライムの冬支度　Finger Limes moving indoors

かつてインコの部屋だったのを今では熱帯果樹の越冬部屋として使っています。昨日のうちに床の拭き掃除をしておいて、今朝、電気カーペットを敷きました。これでやっと安心です。

写真左の黒い影の苗はバイロンサンライズで、今年の夏の間に大苗に育ちました。

追：バイロンサンライズの特性について再確認していたら、以下の記述に引っかかりました。うちの苗とは正反対です：『当該品種は成長が緩慢で枝ぶりは幅狭い。比較的小さな樹形にも関らず多くの実を着ける』。また、うちの苗の葉っぱは非常に大きいので、以前からオーストラリアンブラッドではないかと疑っていたところでした。もしそうなら、ブラッドオレンジとの交配で、モロの実を極小にしただけのような果肉。フィンガーライムとは別物です。

This slow growing tree is of low vigour and has a narrow canopy. Despite the relatively small size, it produces lots of fruit

I took in all the tropical fruit plants. They will spend the winter in this room with an electric carpet underneath. The tall plant on the left is Byron Sunrise - it grew this summer by doubling its size.

カーペットは２畳相当のものですが、ぎゅう詰めです。洗濯物を干すときの出入り用にスペースをとっておかなければならないからです。重たい鉢植えを庭から持って上がるときはきつかったので、いつまでこんなことやっていられるのやら、と心配にもなります。特に、写真右のバイロンサンライズは異常なくらい育ったので末恐ろしいです。

これはダラムズエメラルド。先日スイーツ動画に使ったあとも、４個残っています。

Durham's Emerald with 4 fruits left, after picking some the other day when I made a lime tart.

これはヤフオクで業者から買った「Red」の表示の苗。オーストラリアのサイトでRedのラベルのは野生種だ、といっているのを見たときは結実までに何年かかるのだろうと心配しましたが、２年目の今年に実をつけました。

This plant was sold with a label 'Red' - it may be a wild variety but it already produced fruits this year in its 2nd year.

しかも、粒揃いの大きな実です。

こちらは去年苗を買ってすぐに沢山実を着けたイェローサンシャイン。今年はゼロかもと思っていたら、今朝の引越しの際に実がついているのを発見。今まで庭のスモモ苗の間でひっそりと夏を過ごしたので、気づきませんでした。水やりのときは離れたことろからホース水をかけていただけなので、間近で見たのは春以来、今朝が初めてです。

Yellow Sunshine had lots of fruits last year (first year) and I was not expecting any fruits this year. However, I noticed one, when I was carrying the pot from the garden to this upstairs room.

しかも、近くには実生苗らしきものまで出ていました。去年、収穫の最後頃の小さな実は無視して採らなかったので、それが発芽したのでしょう。

This is probably a seedling from one of the fruits last year.

今朝の引越しで実が着いているのに気づいたものは、あと２品種あります。

こちらはリックスレッド。イエローサンシャインと同じ宝塚のお店から買った苗です。対して、富山県のお店から買ったリックスレッドは結実ゼロ。

Rick's Red with one fruit. Again, I noticed it only this morning as I was carrying the plant upstairs.

こちらはミアローズ。苗が届いたときはとても小さい貧弱苗だったのが、庭で適当な日陰とたっぷりの水分が良かったのか、グングン育ちました。花は見た覚えが無いけど1個だけ実が生りました。ミアローズはピンクアイスの改良品種だそうで、よりはっきりしたピンク色の果肉になるそうです。

Likewise, with Mia Rose. This variety is an improvement on Pink Ice.

最後に黄肉グアバ。２年前、親苗が夏の間に急に枯死したので、慌ててひこばえを取って育てました。何とか種の保存はできました。

Yellow-fleshed guava. Its parent plant died 2 years ago and I have been growing this from a tiny sucker.

パッションフルーツの花(2) Passion Fruit flower (2)

ツルAの２個めの蕾が今日の正午頃に開花していました。こんなに気温が下がっても元気そうなので嬉しいです。

The second flower bud started to open around noon today.

これは２個めの花

こちらは昨日の花で、もう閉じています。昨日の午後に人工授粉をしておきましたが、この閉じた状態が何を意味するのか分かりません。

Yesterday's flower has closed its petals. I pollinated it yesterday but I am not sure whether it was successful or not.

寒さの影響はオシベに出ています。正午に既に開花しているのを発見したあと、午後3時頃に見にいってもまだオシベの花粉が熟していません。

Today's flower was not ready for pollination for several hours. The pollen is not mature yet and hidden inside the yellow sack.

ムシメガネを通して写真を撮ると何とか見えますが、花粉が入った細長いものが２本ずつ付いていて、それが閉じた状態です。（この写真のあと、夕方にやっと授粉作業ができました。）

I took this photo through a magnifying glass and you can see that the sack is still closed with no pollen in view. I think that the weather is too cold for the stamen to develop as it would in a tropical weather.

公園で　At the park

昨日とは打ってかわって青空の公園。日差しは強いけど風がとても冷たかったです。カマキリがコナラの主幹を地味に上っていました。ガーデナーにとっての益虫です。

A beautiful blue sky this morning with crisp breeze, in such a contrast to yesterday's weather. I saw a praying mantis climbing up a tree, a gardener's friend.

公園の上のほうへ行くと、先日ゴロウが行きたかった方角へタイガが引っ張りました。何やらワンコが甲高い声で要求吠えしているのが聞こえます。

Taiga suddenly wanted to turn left as we were walking up the path - we heard a high-pitched voice of a dog.

仔犬のころ、度胸をつけさせるためにちょっとでも高いところへ上るとオヤツを与えていたので、今でも自分から石垣の上にのぼってドヤ顔でオヤツを待っています。

古代家のある林を抜けると、

向こうの草地でヒナやセナたちが遊んでいました。

In the field across the road, we saw Hina and Sena, both female Kaiken.

ボーダーのペッパー君が林の向こうからでも聞こえる声でさっきからないていたのですが、どうやらヒナの臭いが原因のようです。ヒナは２，３年前に手術済みですが、本来なら今ヒートが来ているときらしく、それに伴う独特の臭いを発しているようです。タイガもそうでした。生後11か月で避妊手術をしたのに、その後３年くらいは数か月ごとに家で私が異様な臭いに悩まされていました。人間にとってはくっさい臭いでも、ペッパー君には放っておけない臭いのようです。ムリですが。

The high-pitched voice was that of Pepper, a young male Border Collie. Apparently, Hina is emitting a scent which normally comes with heat. Hina was spayed a few years ago but, as it happened with Taiga also, some hormone works a trick and male dogs think that the female is in genuine heat. In Taiga's case, it kept coming back every 6 months for about 3 years.

ヒナはそのホルモン分泌の影響を受けてか、今朝はとてもいきり立っていました。いつもならタイガに対してとても低姿勢なのに、今朝はともすれば食って掛かりそうな勢いでした。ヒナの耳と尻尾に表れています。

Hina was highly on edge this morning. Normally, she is very subservient to Taiga and me, but not this morning. She even growled at Taiga a few times as she sniffed in an aggressive manner.

ペッパーはヒナが手術済みであることを理解できないので、甲高い声でしきりに近づこうとしていますが、ヒナは完全無視。

Pepper does not seem to understand that it is not real.

甲斐犬たちは早々に引き上げましたが、ペッパーは名残惜しそう。

We left the place early leaving Pepper in a longing mood.

パッションフルーツの花　Passion Fruit Flower

雨が止むのを待って公園へ朝散歩に行きました。昨日の青空がウソのようにどんよりしています。

In contrast to yesterday's blue sky, it drizzled today for more than half of the day. We caught the respite in rain and had a walk in the park.

うちのニラにそっくりな葉っぱをした株が開花中です。

帰宅してタイガは玄関前で座り込み。家の中に入るのが退屈なようで、私が庭で片付けものをしている間だけ外に出しておきました。今日は11月のような寒さなので蚊の心配はありません。

Back home, I had some tidying up to do in the garden, so Taiga sat outside the porch and watched me work. The temperature was as low as mid-November today and there was no need to worry about mosquitoes for Taiga.

ノコンギク（左下）が咲き始めていますが、去年までの勢いがありません。

黄色の食用菊（松風）はまだ蕾です。

2階の部屋に上がったら、何とパッションフルーツの花が咲いていました。今朝起きて最初に見たときは未だ白い花びらの気配もないくらい緑のガクがしっかり閉じていたのに。花はジミなのかハデなのか判断に迷いますが、正直「おどろおどろしい」という印象。鼻を近づけるとかすかに甘酸っぱい香りがしました。

When I went upstairs, I had a nice surprise - the biggest flower bud on the passion fruit plant had opened. It was still a firm bud when I saw it the first thing this morning.

１本の支柱に蕾のあるツルを２本（AとB）括り付けて越冬です。青円で囲んだ蕾はBのツルのもので、赤円のはよりしっかりしたツルAのもの。

I selected strongest-looking two vines A and B (red and blue), and tied them to a supporting prop so as to keep the plant inside during the winter.

これ↓が本体で、グルグル巻きですが越冬のためのコンパクト仕立てです。この苗を買って以来の観察結果として、このようにグルグル巻きでは孫ツルといえども蕾はつかないようです。なので、来年の初夏にはツルをほぐして体勢を立て直します。

This is the main body of the plant. After watching the plant since I bought it a few months ago, I have come to the conclusion that you do not get flower buds on vines tied like this. So, I will untie them next spring and let them grow more freely.

これ↓はツルAとBの先っちょ。越冬中にこれ以上伸びないように寸止めしてあります。

Vine A and B will pass the winter in this state and I have pinched the end of each so that they do not extend any more. There are 4 flower buds in all (including the one that opened this morning).
