皇帝棗 Jujube plant

 5月25日に配達された皇帝棗は順調に育っています。予想どおり、6月の開花からの幼果は全て落ちてしまいましたが、7月の高温のなかで咲いた花からの幼果が日に日に大きくなっています。

The jujube plant that arrived on 25th May has been growing well.  As expected, the young fruits from the flowers in June did not stay on the tree for long.  Instead, the flowers in the sweltering heat of July resulted in fruit setting.  

新たな枝が出続けてそのたびに開花があるので幼果が多すぎる状態。写真のサイズの実だけでも、現在15個以上あります。最終的には10個くらいに減らす予定。

New branches keep coming out and they are accompanied by flower buds.  As a result, the plant has numerous young fruits growing.  There are more than 15 fruits of the sizes in the picture already.  Since the tree is very young, I am planning to keep only a dozen of the young fruits to grow to maturity.

苗が到着して以降の枝の葉っぱは本来の大きな葉で、いかにも大実品種の雰囲気があります。

The leaves of the new branches are quite large, compared to those that were there when the plant was delivered.  This is expected of a known variety with large fruits.  (The formal Chinese name of this variety is not known in Japan.  It has been sold as "Emperor" jujube here, but such a name does not exist in China, it seems.)

リンゴなど Apples etc

昨日の雷雨と突風で、鉢植えリンゴ苗が両方とも 倒れていました。グラニースミスはその衝撃で実がもげてしまった！ あと2か月は待って欲しかったのに。でも、見た目はイギリスで生食していたグラニースミスに劣らぬ大きさです。この色、この斑点、まさにGS。

We had lots of thunder and lightning yesterday and both of the potted apple trees were knocked down to the ground.  The fruit on the Granny Smith tree came off in the rain and storm.  I was hoping to keep it on the tree for another 2 months.  However, the size of the fruit is already as large as those sold in stores in England for eating fresh.

「紅の夢」の苗を起こしてびっくり。実の表面にぽっかり黒い穴。赤く色づき始めたら野鳥に突かれるかもしれないと思い、ネット掛けにしてあったので虫の侵入ではないはず。最近の35℃超えの猛暑で焼けたようです。袋を掛けたあとは安心して観察を怠っていました。かなりショックですが、来年からは６月末頃か袋掛けにしようと思います。

The red-fleshed variety "Kurenai-no-Yume" was even worse.  I had put a protective net on the fruit so that wild birds could not get to it, and yet, it had a large black hole!  It turned out that the extreme summer heat and sun had burned a hole in it, and it had nothing to do with birds or insects.

半割にしてみると、この時期はまだ種が白いことが分かりました。同じ未熟果でも、GSの酸っぱさは強烈でしたが、懐かしさもあります。

Not surprisingly, the seeds are still white.  Being unripe fruits, they both tasted sour but the sourness of the Granny Smith was extreme.

スモモのハニーハートはオレンジの木の木陰になっていたので、熟すのが遅くなりました。

Honey Heart plum fruits are ripe at last.  The plant being placed in the shade of the orange tree, it took a long time to ripen.

栽培農家が出すものより１か月遅れ、しかも小さい。でも、自家栽培のひいきで美味しい！とてもジューシーで爽やかな甘さ。糖度は決して高くはないけど好きな味です。

Although smaller than those produced by professionals, the fruit tasted very nice.  The sugar content is low for a plum but quite refreshing to eat.

今年もウメボシの季節。よく行く八百屋さんで安い梅があったので２kg買ってきました。安かった理由は、かなり青い実だったから。塩漬けにして一月たった今も果肉が硬いです。実が固いのできっちり「３日干し」にしようと思います。

Ume plums have been pickled in salt for a month now and ready to be dried in the sum.  This year, I bought 2 kg of them.  After being sun-dried they are put back into the pickling pot with the red shiso leaves.  They should be ready for eating from January onwards.

ナツメ苗到着 New jujube plant

去年の春に買ったコーネリアンチェリーの「カザンラク」は、晩秋の落葉期までは庭の半日陰で地植えにしておいたらビュンビュン上へ伸びたので、地上70cmほどでカットして鉢上げしました。その鉢植えを今まで南向きバルコニーに置いていたら、最近の強烈な日差しのせいか葉っぱが焼けてきました。その場所は夏のあいだ早朝から夕方まで陽当たりなので、コーネリアンチェリーの栽培条件の'full sun' にぴったり、と思っていたのですが日本の夏は暑すぎかも。ということで、今日からは庭へ下します。

The leaves of cornelian cherry 'Kazanlak' have started to go brown probably due to the extreme heat and sun of the Japanese summer.  I have been keeping this plant on the upstairs balcony which faces south and gets direct sunlight from early morning to late afternoon during summer months.  I thought this would satisfy the 'full sun' requirement of the cornelian cherry.  

Now that I am worried about the browning of the leaves, I brought it down to the garden this morning.  This plant will stay in the half shade for the rest of this year, as it did during last year.  

葉っぱの付け根には丸っこい芽と鋭く尖った芽がペアで出ています。今までの観察結果からすると、枝側の丸っこい芽から出てくるのは枝になるもの。では葉っぱ側の尖った芽から来年用の花芽が出るのかと考えると、疑わしい。普通、丸っこい芽の中に蕾が詰まっていると思う。そうこう考えているうちに、来年の開花に関しては悲観的になってきました。いずれにせよ、秋には判定できるはず。

I am not sure whether this plant is ready to produce flower buds for next year.  When I look at the base of each leaf, I can see two buds - a fat and round one, and a pointed and thin one.  Based on my observation so far, the round one houses future twig.  Does that mean that the sharp and thin one contains next year's flower buds?  I am not so sure, since I have always thought that a fat node gives you future flower buds.  In any case, I will be able to tell within the next few months.

カザンラクを移動させてできたスペース用に、ナツメ苗を注文しました。とにかくあのコーナーは、真夏は西日も受けて灼熱の砂漠になるので、生き残れる果樹はナツメとパッションフルーツくらいです。嬉しいことにサツマイモも暑くて厳しい環境が大好きらしく、今は立派なグリーンカーテンができつつあります。

今日の午後に届いた苗。箱の大きさに圧倒されました。隣のカザンラクが小苗に見えます。

For the spot that was vacated by Kazanlak, I had already ordered a jujube plant which arrived this afternoon.  

That particular spot on the balcony becomes like a desert in the summer and only jujube plants can comfortably live, with the exception, perhaps, of passion fruits and sweet potato plants.

普通に日本ナツメ。

It is just common Japanese jujube.

今日の練馬区は最高気温が38℃だったようで、とにかく暑かった。こんな大苗を植え付けるには最悪の日ですが、バケツ水に1時間ほど漬けておいたので大丈夫でしょう。

It was the hottest day of the year so far, with the max. temperature reaching 38℃, the worst day to plant such a large tree, you could say.  So, I soaked the plant in a bucket of water for an hour before planting.

オマケの肥料も活用。

I used the complementary fertiliser, too, when potting.

鉢のサイズは、10号では新たな土を入れられないほどキツキツだったので、12号にしました。ただし浅型。それでも、完全に植え付けした後では二階バルコニーへ持って上がれないので、写真のように一部の土をいれて苗を上げ、残りの土はバケツで運んでバルコニーで足しました。

I used the 36cm diameter pot.  It would have been too heavy for me to carry it upstairs if I had put all the soil into it.  Instead, I carried the remaining soil in a bucket to fill the pot on the balcony.

完成。手前が今日の苗で、向こうが皇帝。皇帝が到着したときは随分立派な苗に見えたし、それ以来25cm以上も樹高が伸びていますが、今日の苗の横では小さく見える。
Done.  The one in front is the new tree, whereas the one in the back is the known variety jujube that I got several weeks ago.  When it first arrived, I thought it was a large plant but, standing next to today's new arrival, it looks like a baby tree.

樹姿は株立ちっぽい状態なので、広い庭でこれを地植えにすると山野風になりそう。

With the bushy appearance, this plant would have looked nice in a large garden to add a wild atmosphere.

幼果もところどころに見えています。日本ナツメなのでサイズは期待できないけど、ナツメ大好き人間の私にとって味見が楽しみです。

Some young fruits are growing.  Since this is a common jujube tree, the fruits will be small but I am so looking forward to tasting them in autumn.

ドヤ顔のりんご Red apple doing exceptionally well

 １個だけ実を着けさせた「紅の夢」が肥大を続けています。大きい！ なぜか蟠桃のように扁平ですが、このあと縦方向に育つのでしょうか。

This is the red-fleshed cooking apple variety called 'Kurenai-no-yume'.  I left one fruit on the tree to grow, since this is the first year of flowering.  I bought the bareroot plant in spring last year and this tree is still very young.  

家の前の道から見てもかなり目立っています。今年はヒヨドリが毎日ブラックベリーを突いているので、この大事な１個が被害を受けないよう、そろそろ袋掛けをしようと思います。

Although only one fruit, it is very conspicuous, even looked at from the road.  Some passers-by have asked me what it was.  

Since the blackberries have been picked by wild birds every day this year, I think I should put a bag over this precious only fruit.

この品種を開発した弘前大学の公式ホームページによると、紅の夢の果重は300g～350g程度となっているので、片親の紅玉よりも大きくなりそうです。また、紅玉の実は日持ちがしないので料理人泣かせと言われていますが、紅の夢は普通冷蔵で３か月保存できるそうで、良いとこだらけ。

According to the official page of the University which developed this variety, the fruit should weigh 300g～350g, which means it will be larger than one of its parent varieties called 'Kogyoku'.  Now, Kogyoku is notorious for its short shelf life once harvested, which presents a headache for chefs.  In contrast, this variety can be stored under normal refrigeration for up to 3 months.  

形は今のところブラムリーに似た、ゴツゴツのジャガイモのような石のような雰囲気です。

Curiously, the shape resembles that of Bramley - flat shape and uneven surface,

looking like a potato or a rock.

グラニースミスの実の成長は緩慢です。苗は玄関横に置いてあるので、道のすぐそばにある紅の夢ほど日当たりは良くないせいかも。それでも、ここに来て見慣れたサイズに近づいてきました。イギリスでは、グラニースミスは果皮が鮮やかな緑で実の形が美しい球形の段階で売られているので、私はそういうものだと思っていました。が、近年、日本でも栽培農家が出荷するようになり、私がときどき行く江古田のスーパーで見かけたときはびっくりでした。そこで初めて知ったのは、樹上完熟すると実は大きく、形は若干ゴツゴツ、果皮は一部薄っすら黄色を帯びるということです。帰宅してネットで調べてみたら、オーストラリアやイギリスでは外観重視で、あの目が覚めるような緑色のうちから出荷するそうで、私はそれしか見たことなかっただけでした。

Granny Smith is slow going but, considering that I only bought the bareroot plant in spring last year, I am not complaining.  I am happy to say, that this apple is getting closer to the size normally sold as green apple in England.  Granny Smith apples are harvested and sold in England while they are still small and very green with a beautiful round shape.  So, I never knew that they could continue to grow to twice as large if left on the tree.  Only recently, some Japanese apple farmers started growing this variety and I became aware of the mature fruits.

素芯オニユリ開花 Spotless Tiger Lily

今年は玄関前に鉢を置いたせいか、早めの開花です。東向きなので、午前中たっぷりと朝日を浴びています。

オニユリ独特のポツポツが無い花で、マニア向けです。花びらはツヤっぽく妖しく見える一方で、キリリとした雰囲気もあります。この濃いオレンジ色の花をみたあと普通のオニユリを見ると、色褪せた花に見えてしまいます。

I placed the pot of tiger lilies in front of my porch, which faces the east.  They get plenty of morning sunlight up to midday.  This is probably why they started to flower so early this year.

These are a rare variety which comes without the usual dark dots on the petal.  Also, the colour of the petal is much darker than that of the common tiger lily.

開花直前の蕾は何となく、食べると美味しそうな可愛い外観。

The flower buds are also very pretty - they even look like candies.

蕾はまだ沢山あるので、数日は楽しめそう。

With lots of flower buds waiting to open, I will be enjoying these lovely flowers for several more days.

蟠棗が枯死？ Panzao nearly dead

 一時は芽吹きで期待をもったパンザオですが、ここへ来て状況が一変してしまいました。

There was a time when I was getting quite optimistic about my Panzao's future.  However, there has been a change.

５センチほど伸びたところで成長が完全にストップしたかと思うと、徐々に干からびた野菜のようになってきました。あ～、脱力で言葉にもなりません。

おまけに、元からある地上部は、樹皮に縦シワが入り始めました。これは、芯が完全に乾燥して縮んだため、余った樹皮がシワシワになっているのでしょう。

The new shoot stopped growing after reaching the length of about 5 cm, and then it started to wither.  It is now looking like a vegetable that has been left in the fridge for a week.  I am utterly speechless.  Moreover, the skin on the trunk has become creased vertically.  This is probably because the core of the trunk has gone completely dry and shrivelled which, in turn, caused the wrinkles on the outside.

これは先日届いた「皇帝」。これが無かったなら、今年の棗栽培は、暗～い一年になったことでしょう。あのお店には感謝、感謝です。

This is the new plant that arrived a few weeks ago.  What a comfort to have this!  Without this plant, 2024 would have been a miserable jujube year.  So, I am grateful to that shop who sent me this plant.

幼果が見え始めました。今後、７月以降の暑い気候で咲いた花からの着果率は高いはずなので、今年の秋には１個でも良いから味見したいものです。

朝さんぽ Morning walk

 これは雨後の昨日の散歩から。近所の空き地のフェンスに数日前から落とし物がぶら下がっていたのですが、誰かが雨で汚れるのを心配して袋掛けにしてくれたようです。

This is from yesterday's walk, when the rain had stopped.  I had noticed a baby's toy hanging on the fence near my home since several days previously.  It was now placed in a plastic bag - someone had taken the trouble of putting it in the bag so that the toy would not get wet in the heavy rain.

雨粒がまだ内側についているようです。早く持ち主に気付いてもらえると良いのですが。

Some raindrops are on the inside but the toy looks clean.  Hopefully, the owner will pass by soon and notice it.

公園のムクゲが満開に近い状態。

雨水で一部の花がつぶれたままですが、それでも木全体が花束のよう。

Some of the flowers are crashed by raindrops but the whole tree looks like a giant bouquet.

タイガは長い散歩ができてゴキゲン。ダイエット中ですが、少しスリムになったからか、目つきがイキイキしてきた印象です。以前は、いかにも老犬のぽわ～んとした目つきでした。

Taiga is in a good mood being able to take a long walk after the rain.  She has been on a diet and slimmed down a bit.  Thanks to that, her eyes look a lot keener and livelier than before.

５月22日の手術で剃られた胸の毛が生え始めています。手術後に水が溜まっていたのも、今は完全に解消されました。

After the lipoma removal operation on 22nd May, the hair on her chest is regrowing.  Also, there was a bag of fluid where the lipoma used to be but that has now been reabsorbed into her body.

公園で At the park

 毎日暑くて外に出るのが億劫になるほどです。今朝は早起きして涼しいうちに公園散歩を楽しみました。

The weather has turned so warm that it is painful to go outside.  This morning, we went out early so as to enjoy the cool air while it lasted.

タイガの術後は順調で、自分でも身が軽くなったのを実感しているような印象です。今回の血液検査で、コレステロール値が若干高めなのを指摘されました。1年前、左耳の内側にできた腫瘍を切除してもらった際の血液検査では、各項目が正常値の範囲内だったので今回の警告にはショックを受けました。それを犬友に話したら、血液検査は何十項目もあるなかで一項目だけが範囲を若干超えているのは、11歳にしては良いほうだと言われました。が、日頃のお肉のトッピングが原因の一つかも知れないので、今度こそ決意してトッピングを改善することにしました。

去年の５月の手術のときの体重は25kgジャストだったのに対し、今回は脂肪腫を取り除く前で22.75kg、抜糸のときで22.60kgでした。最終的な目標は20kgです。ほんの少しでも痩せたおかげか、若返った印象です（親バカ）。

Taiga is steadily recovering from the operation.  Just after removing the lipoma, she had a small balloon filled with fluid.  I had it cleared when we went back for stitches removal, but the fluid came back right after.  However, it has been all absorbed into her system now.  One thing that bothers me is that the blood test result showed that her cholesterol was a little high.  12 months ago, all the items were within the normal range, so I cannot ignore the latest result.  I am going to improve her topping - no more fatty meat.

In May last year, she weighed 25 kg.  This year, just before removing the lipoma, she weighed 22.75 kg, and at the time of removing the stitches, 22.60 kg.  I am hoping to bring it down to 20 kg eventually.  Although she has lost only a small amount, I feel that she already looks younger and fitter.

手術の直後は胸に水が溜まって、抜糸の際に水を抜いてもらいました。その数時間後には元通りに膨らんでいましたが、普通に暮らしているうちに引いてきて、今は胸を触っても水風船のようなものは無くなっています。

公園の反対側でたまにしか通らなくなった道のわきにアジサイが咲いていました。

Since it was early in the morning and the cool air was pleasant, we went to the other side of the park, where we saw a lot of hydrangea trees.

朝の涼しいうちに通ると爽やかです。

It was refreshing to walk through the path.

青花の真横に赤い花の株があります。酸性土壌とか、関係ないのでしょうか。

I noticed a tree with red flowers right next to other trees with blue flowers.  Hydrangeas are supposed to be sensitive to the acidity of the soil.

昔ふうの素朴な雰囲気です。
