栗入りキノコパン Mushroom buns with chestnut core

栗ご飯を作ろうと、直ぐに使える栗をスーパーで探しているうちに、パンのアイディアが浮かびました。ご飯用には余った不揃いの小さな栗を残してあるので、これから利用する予定です。

I saw this year's chestnuts in the supermarket and the idea of sweet buns came into my head.  I was originally looking for the chestnuts for use with rice - I am now left with smaller pieces which I will use for 'chestnut rice'. 

公園で At the park

 公園では相変わらずボーダーのシェリー君が、一心不乱にフリスビーをやっていました。ボーダーのあの集中力は何なんでしょう。けっして和犬には見られない執着心です。

As always, Shelly, a male Border Colly, was busy chasing his frisbee with the typical power of concentration/obsession.

帰り際、ボーダーのモノ君にひさしぶりにばったり。

As we were leaving the park, we met Mono, a male Border Collie, for the first time in months, if not more than a year.

久しぶりなので、モノ君の飼い主さんにオヤツをせびるタイガを止めませんでした。こういうときだけ、タイガも集中力を発揮します。腰が地面から浮いている。

As Taiga and Mono were so excited to meet again, I allowed Taiga to ask for a treat from Mono's mom.  Where it concerns a treat, Taiga's power of concentration is no less powerful than that of a Border Collie.

今年もキンカンライムが大実をたくさんつけています。種ゴロゴロなのが玉に瑕ですが、それでも料理に重宝します。種無しスダチはもう終わっているので、これ以降の香酸類は、このキンカンライム、種無しカボス、大実柚子の順に利用します。

The limequat plant is a steady producer even though the tree is still small.  The flavour is the best while the fruit is still green.

私が果樹の観察に没頭していると、タイガがやって来て注意を引こうとしました。タイガがこうやって自分から甘えてくるのは極めて珍しいことなので、頭をナデナデ。犬は飼い主に似るといいますが、それでも和犬の素っ気なさは異常なんでは？

As I was absorbed in looking at the plants, Taiga came closer asking for my attention.  She never makes obvious display of affection towards me and her standing close to me is the closest expression of affection.  So I stroked her on the head.

先日ラッキーにも地元JAでみつけたオリーブのピクアル（右）は、一緒に植えられていたもう1本とは別々に10号ロングスリットに植えました。小さな鉢で根っこが絡み合っていたので、分裂した後は１週間以上も軒下で待機させてから2階バルコニーへ上げました。うちのバルコニーは、夏は灼熱の砂漠になるので、今年は柑橘苗やスモモが枯死寸前まで衰弱しました。あのカラッカラになる地中海やイベリア半島原産のオリーブなら大丈夫でしょう。

The olive plants I bought the other day were planted together in one pot, so I separated them immediately.  Now each of them lives in a 30cm diameter pot on the balcony facing the east.  The two plants' roots were entangled so much that I fear it might take some time for the plants to recover from the shock.

公園で At the park

 今日の東京は曇り。さっさと歩いていると汗ばむような蒸し暑さでした。川沿いの歩道脇のアベリアがまた咲いています。冬以外の季節を通して多少なりとも咲いていますが、基本的に春、夏、秋（今）にドカンと咲く時期があって、蜂蜜の瓶のフタを開けたような甘い匂いが強烈です。

Although not a sunny day, at least it was not raining today.  The pedestrian road to the park, along side the river, is lined with abelia bushes.  Witht the exception of winter months, they seem to be flowering almost all year round.  The strong sweet fragrance is really nice.

常緑で最終樹高が人間の背丈程度なので、沿道には最適です。

公園に着くと、数年ぶりに柴犬のソボロちゃんを見かけました。遠くからタイガを見つけて寄ってきてくれたのには感激。たまに車で来るようなので、会える機会はまれです。

Arriving at the park, an old friend spotted us and came running - a female Shiba Inu named Soboro.  We have not seen her for several years, since she lives at a distance comes in a car.

いま５歳だそうで、まだまだ元気いっぱいです。

道を渡って違う草地に移動すると、スバル君がロングリードで運動中。笑顔で迎えてくれました。

In another field, Subaru, a male Shiba mix, was having a morning exercise and greeted us with a big smile.

橋を渡って中央公園へ移動すると、チワワのリンちゃんとばったり。

We moved to another field, where we met Rin, a female Chihuahua.

成長してから随分と人見知りするようになったようです。

As she grew up, she became shy of other dogs and people.

さらに他の子らも到着。近所のゴロウ、黒柴姉妹に

We were joined by more friends.

りんごスライス入りセモリナケーキ Semolina cake with apple layers

 一見ムカデのように見えますが、食べると美味しいケーキです。普通の小麦粉を使うと、焼きあがった生地はゴムのように固い食感になるので、デュラム粉と粉末アーモンドで生地を作りました。

The sponge is made of fine semolina and almond powder, which prevents the sponge becoming rubbery when based (as is the case with normal flour).  The added flavour of the chocolate sauce is very effective.

 雨天続きの間に、タイガの獣臭が最高レベルに達していました。そこでシャンプー。その後はご褒美の散歩 兼 自然乾燥の旅。公園に着くと閑散としていました。

After weeks of rainy days, Taiga was smelling 'ripe'.  Taking advantage of the sunny day, I gave her a thorough shampoo in the afternoon, after which we went to the park for a pre-dryer walk.

午後3時という中途半場なタイミングだったので誰もいません。4時以降なら特定のグループが、夕食準備前の時間帯に集まるのでタイガの顔見知りにも会えるのですが。

Absolutely no-one in sight at 3 in the afternoon.  

帰宅途中、家の近くまで来たら違う方角からジャーマンピンシャーのリアちゃんが合流しました。何やら被り物をしています。

On our way home, we were joined by Leah, a female German pinscher puppy, with a strange outfit on her head.

耳の皮膚が薄っぺらなので裂ける傾向があるそうです。タイガは見慣れぬ光景に「ギョッ」としたリアクション。

Her ears are so thin that they tend to tear without a protective cover when walking outside.  Taiga is taken aback by the strange sight.

リアちゃんが挨拶に近づこうとするたびに、タイガはさっと前へ進んで距離を置きます。

Everytime Leah tries to get close to Taiga, Taiga jumps ahead to keep a distance.

やっと逃げるのを諦めてリアちゃんと向き合いました。

Eventually, Taiga relented and greeted Leah.

リアちゃんは子供ながら全く物怖じしない性格なので、タイガにマウントを取りそうな勢いの挨拶。

Leah is a fearless puppy and greets Taiga aggressively.

それにしても、赤と黒のコントラストが何とも。右後ろ足にはお靴も履いている。

With a hooded head, Leah looks like a burglar or some sort of bad actor.

帰宅して、仕上げのドライヤーをかけました。これまで冬のような寒い日が続いてボウフラが発生しないのか、蚊がいないので玄関の外でドライヤーです。

Arriving home, I dried Taiga's coat with my hair dryer.  Thanks to the recent cold days, there were no mosquitoes today.

タイガにとってストレスなシャンプーやドライヤーが終わって平和な時間。

After the stressful shampoo, an aggressive puppy, and a dryer, Taiga enjoys a well-earned sleep.

寝顔を眺めていると、あーシアワセ、と感じました。

Watching her sleeping face, I felt happy and at peace.

公園で At the park

 朝散歩でいつもの草地へ行ったあと、あまりにも天気が良いので茂呂山公園と柿の木広場経由で帰ることにしました。東京はずっと雨や曇りの天気だったので、今朝のような雲一つない空は数週間ぶりです。（昨日の写真です。ここ２，３週間、PCが不具合を起こしていて、昨日の朝、とうとう動かなくなってしまいました。仕方なくPCを初期化して治ったのですが、初期化から再度立ち上げまで何時間もかかったうえ、ネットに接続したり日常的に必要なアプリを再度搭載するのに膨大な時間がかかり、終わったときにはヘロヘロ。）

とにかく、茂呂山公園の手前の歩道。集合住宅の前にナツミカンの木があり、実が大きくなっています。誰かが引越しの際に植えて行ったのか、数年前から毎年立派な実を着けるようになりました。

The first sunny day in weeks - not a speck of cloud in the sky.  After visiting the usual field and a treat for Taiga, we went to Moroyama Park and Persimmon Park on our way home.  Just before Moroyama, there is a citrus tree on the pavement, in front of a block of apartment.  This plant produces a few fruits every year.

色づくと遠くから見ても綺麗です。

Probably someone planted it when moving out of the apartment?  The plant looks like "Natsumikan" - a very sour type, even more sour then the grapefruit.

嬉しい？顔を近づけると、ここ数週間の湿った天気で獣臭がきつくなっていました。天気いいし、午後にシャンプーする？「シャンプー」という音を聞くと、ぱっと目を開いて警戒モード。

As I got closer to her face, she smelt 'beastly'.  After weeks of rain and cloud, she was in urgent need of a good shampoo.

道を挟んで向かいの柿木広場へ移動したら、入口で柴犬のコンちゃんに会えました。もう1年くらい会っていないかも。

We crossed the road to the Persimmon Park, where we met Kon, a male Shiba Inu.  I cannot remember the last time I saw him, due to the reduced meeting opportunities from Covid.

随分とおとなの雰囲気になりました。今３歳だそうです。一番美しい時期。

コートは、タイガとは異なる色合いの美しい赤色です。

At 3 years old, Kon looks very handsome with his beautiful red coat.

柿の木広場の入り口付近にある「蜂屋」。大木に囲まれて日当たりが良くないので実着きが乏しいですが、立派な実が生ります。

The persimmon variety called "Hachiya", with long, large fruits.

落ちてくる頃には過熟で、地面に着地してペタンコになります。子供の頃、うちの色づいた蜂屋（地元では「長とろ」と呼んでいました）をもみ殻の山に入れておくと、甘くてとろとろになったのを覚えています。

This is an astringent variety but when harvested to ripen off the tree, the fruits become sweeter than any naturally sweet varieties.

色づいた実は野鳥が食べるので穴ボコだらけになっています。

公園で At the park

 公園へ向かう川沿いの歩道にはハナミズキの並木があります。そのうち赤花の木の葉っぱが色づき始めています。

The dogwood trees are starting to turn red.  The leaves of red dogwood flowers seem to turn into deeper red than those with white flowers.

東京の気温は寒暖の差が少ないので、綺麗な紅葉になる木々は限られています。その意味でこのハナミズキは有難い存在です。他には赤葉品種のモミジ（大盃、ノムラなど）やトウカエデがある程度、綺麗な黄葉はイチョウの木くらいです。

The night temperature in Tokyo stays too warm in autumn and, as a result, we do not get many trees turning into beautiful red or yellow leaves.  So, the dogwood is one of the precious species.

途中ですれ違ったキングチャールズの男の子、３歳だそうです。このスパニエルが犬種として有名になったのは、チャールズ2世の時代ですが、今は3世の時代です。

As we were continuing our walk towards the park, we met a 3-year old, male King Charles Spaniel.

After the initial courage to greet Taiga waned, he started clinging to his owners.

いつもの草地。ソメイヨシノが植わっていますが、１本だけ品種違いがあります。開花時期も落葉の時期も異なり、さらには花後には美味しいサクランボを提供してくれます。ソメイヨシノの葉は色づくことなく落下するのに、この木はそこそこ綺麗な葉っぱが楽しめます。

After eating the treat, I always have to clean her up.

本人は気取ってポーズをとっても、マヌケな顔。

帰り道の途中の屋敷林。昔の農家の林が2か所ありますが、いずれもチャノキが沢山植わっています。昔、流行った時代があったのでしょうか。

On our way home, I noticed tea trees were starting to flower in the privately-owned wood land open to the general public.  There are a few woodlands belonging to old farming families.  It probably was a popular thing to have these bushes at some point in the past, for there are lots and lots of these bushes in each woodland.

近くで見ると花柄がけっこう大きくて、いかにも椿の仲間という感じです。

近所の園芸店でゲットしたもの。左の苗は観賞用のシダ。テレビの横に置いて大株に育てる予定です。

右は毎年買っている、食用菊の「もってのほか」。この品種は2年目以降の花の色はボケたピンクになってしまいますが、今日買った苗の花ほど濃い色のは初めて見るので試してみることにしました。

I saw a pot of pretty ferns, as well as a pot of edible chrysanthemum flowers in the nearby shop.

去年買った苗の花との色の比較。左は去年の、右は今日買ったもの。小菊だと思えば十分鑑賞に堪えるので、有り過ぎて困ることはありません。

I buy the pink edible chrysanthemum plant every year.  The flowers become pale pink from the 2nd year onwards, but today's plant has the deepest pink colour I have seen in this edible variety.  (The light pink flowers are of the plant I bought last year, and the ones on the right are of today's plant.)  I am hoping that today's plant will not go as pale as those of old plants.
