2本あるコーネリアンチェリーのうち、パイオニアには去年の夏に蕾が２個確認できました。もうそろそろ開花に向けて蕾が膨らみ始めても良い頃ではと思い、毎日眺めていますが何も起こりません。しかも蕾の形状はまん丸ではなく扁平なので、もしかして不良なのかも。
Of the two varieties of Cornelian cherries, the Pioneer plant produced two flower buds during summer last year. Now that we are in the month of March, I have been watching the flower buds every day wondering when they would start blooming. So far, no sign of flowering. Moreover, the flower buds are flat instead of spherical, so I half suspect that they may be duds.
This is the whole view of the Pioneer. I only bought this last spring, and it is still tiny. Nevertheless, the leaf buds have started to grow.
こちら↓は２年前の春に購入したカザンラクで蕾なし。枝の分岐が結構おきているので、今年の夏には蕾が出ることを期待しています。パイオニアは受粉相手が必要だけど、カザンラクは自家受粉するそうなので来年は是非 花を見たいです。
This is the Kazanlak that I bought 2 years ago, but it has no flower buds. The plant has enough short branches and I am hoping that it will produce flower buds during this summer. Now, Pioneer needs a pollinator, whereas Kazanlak is self-pollinating, which makes me want to see flowers next year all the more.
買い物帰りに地元JAを覗いてみました。JAはうちから100メートルほどの距離にあるので、時々覗いては花で季節の変化を味わっています。
I dropped into the JA plant shop on my way home from shopping. This JA is only 100 meters away from my house and I often visit the shop to see flowers of the season.
屋外の盆栽コーナーでは、立派なサンシュユが今まさに満開。アジアのサンシュユと欧州のコーネリアンチェリーとでは開花時期がずれるのか、それともうちのパイオニアの蕾がそもそも不発に終わるので未だ開花していないのか、分かりません。
I went to the outdoor bonsai corner, where I found this Asian cornel in full bloom. Do Asian cornels start blooming much earlier than European Cornus mas? Or, the flower buds on my Pioneer tree are destined not to bloom anyway?
サンシュユは、実が小さいけれど花の咲き方は豪華です。
Fruits of Asian cornels may be tiny, but the blossoms are very showy.
対して、これ↓はネットで見かけた品種不明のコーネリアンチェリー (Cornus mas) の花。庭の花木として植えるならサンシュユ、実の収穫が目的ならコーネリアンチェリーのようです。
I found this European Cornus mas in bloom on YouTube, which shows the difference in appearance. If you want a flowering tree in your garden, the Asian variety is good, but, if you want to harvest large fruits, the European variety goes unchallenged.
