ブラックベリー開花 Blackberries flowering

 公園はすっかり新緑の季節です。

The fresh leaves of deciduous trees in the park are at their most beautiful this time of the year.

葉っぱが赤いノムラモミジとコナラの緑とのコントラストが綺麗です。

The Japanese maple tree with red leaves against the background of green trees makes a nice contrast.

うちではブラックベリーのナバホが咲き始めました。年々株が太ってきて、今では根元近くの太さが私の手首くらいあります。もう立派な「木」のようです。ただし管理は２年草の扱いで、去年の夏に出てきた今ある地上部は、夏に収穫が終わり次第根元で切ってしまいます。その頃には既に来年用の太いシュートが出ているので、最も勢いのある２本だけ残して、後続のシュートはその都度除去しています。

My blackberry, Navaho from the US, has started to bloom.  The plant's roots are now so established that the shoots that come out every summer are getting larger every year.  So, I keep just 2 shoots for the following year, and remove any following shoots during the rest of the summer.  By the time I harvest all the berries, new shoots for the next year will have come out and I cut down the old ones from last year, on which berries had been growing.

花びらは基本的に５枚のようですが、中には二重のような咲き方もあります。

Some of the flowers have many petals, instead of the usual 5.

花の色は普通は白ですが、咲き始めはピンクのもあります。

And, some of them are pink instead of white.

カップ状のを横から見るとカワイイ野ばらのよう。

私の大、大好きなハンザも咲き始めました。ハンザは全部で３本ありますが、これは一番最後に取り寄せた株で、鉢植えで管理。他の２本はナバホの両側、下のほうで何とか生きています。

My favourite Hanza has started to flower.  I love this variety best of all, even though I admit that there are countless rose varieties in this world with more beautiful looking flowers.  I have two more of this Hanza, growing on either side of the Navaho blackberry.

ハンザの花の形は、幼いうちは同一の株でも不安定で季節や気温によってバラバラです。でも、どんなにブサイクな咲き方でも、この品種が最高。

This plant is still young, so the shape of the flower can vary depending on the time of the year or the temperature at the time of opening.  Whatever shape it takes, I love this variety best.

暑い朝 Mornings getting warm

 今朝は早朝から暑いのなんの。家では退屈なタイガでさえ、今朝は地元3丁目内の散歩で満足していました。ただし、３丁目も丘陵地なので丘を登ったり下りたりと、脚を鍛えられます。

It was a warm day even in the early morning hours.  Although Taiga is always eager to go out, she was content with walking within our local district.  However, with our district also sitting on a very hilly terrain, you have to walk up and down a lot of slopes.

数日前に通ったナニワノイバラのツルが見事な家。今朝は満開でした。

The house we saw several days ago, with the Cherokee rose.  It was now in full bloom.

花が散り始めると掃除が大変そうです。

The owner of the house will be busy as the flowers start to fall.  (In Japan, we clean up the street in front of the house ourselves, instead of relying on the local government.)

こちらはシランの花壇がある家。10年くらい前に苗が植えられたときは隙間だらけで淋しい状態でしたが、着実に増えて今ちょうど良い感じです。花色は３種類植わっていて、

白の素芯と

white flowers,

淡いピンク

pale pink,

そして定番の紫色です。この紫色のも含め、どの色の苗も普通のシランよりも小ぶりです。

and the commonest variety with purple flowers.

朝散歩 Morning walk

 夜のうちに雨が降ったあとだったので、今朝は蒸し暑い散歩になりました。四中横の草地では雨後の雑草が伸び伸びになっていましたが、私の好きなタンポポとシロツメクサの花でいっぱいなので景色を楽しめました。散歩に出ようとしたら、うちの近所のゴロウがちょうど通りがかったので一緒に来ました。ゴロウは16歳、タイガはもうすぐ11歳なので、何をするにもゆっくりです。

It rained during the night and it was very humid by the time we went out for a walk.  As we were leaving for the park, my neighbour and her dog, Goro, came along and we left together.  The grass in the park is growing fast due to the recent rains.  However, I love looking at the field covered with dandelions and white clover flowers.  Goro is 16 years old, and Taiga soon to be 11.  They relax and enjoy as they want.

タイガの大好きなタービュレンのルイ君がやって来ました。ルイ君はタイガより1歳下なので10歳。みんな歳をとりました。

There came Louis, Taiga's favourite.  He is a 10-year old Tervuren.  So, we are all getting old.

うちの斜め向かいの公園では、数年前に植えた一重咲き赤花サンザシのクリムゾン・クラウドが満開です。

In the small park opposite to my house, Crimson Cloud hawthorn is in full bloom.  I planted it several years ago.

鉢植えで育てていましたが、制御できないくらいに育ったので花壇に植えたものです。満開になると数メートル離れたところでは甘い良い香りですが、鼻を近づけると臭いが変わります。毎年、晩秋になると区の人がやってきて徹底的に切り詰めるので、いい感じに低木のままキープされています。それでも花はたくさん咲く。

I used to love this tree but it outgrew the pot.  The flowers smell nice and sweet from several meters away but the scent changes if you get too close.  The tree has stayed small thanks to the maintenance people sent by the Ward Office every autumn, who trim it down to a small bush.  It still produces lots of flowers.

帰宅しても中に入りたがらないタイガ。今はまだ蚊のいない時期なので、玄関の戸を開けたままにしておきます。暑すぎると冷たい玄関のタイルの上で涼しんだり水を飲んだりしています。それ以外は玄関前の座布団に座って、道行く人たちを眺めています。

Arriving home, Taiga prefers to stay outside.  With no mosquitoes out there yet, I leave the front door ajar.  If it gets too warm outside, she comes into the porch and lies down on the cold tiles.  Otherwise, she sits on the cushion in front of the porch and watches the world go by.

朝散歩で見た花 Flowers during morning walk

 晴れた朝の散歩は汗ばむ季節になりました。すぐ近所の家のツツジが満開です。

A very sultry morning after the rains.  My neighbour's azalea trees are in full bloom.

雨のなかで見たときは、ピンクの濃淡が不思議なほど綺麗でしたが、直射日光の下で見るとキラキラしています。

These flowers looked very different in the rain, with the pale pink parts looking white.  This morning, the flowers were glittering in the sun.

こちらは、あまり見かけないライラック色の花。

These are unusual lilac-coloured azaleas.

うちと同じ3丁目にある中学のグラウンド横も今はツツジのピークです。

The azalea hedge next to the sports ground of a junior high school in my district.

隣の6丁目を歩いていて、タイガが急に足を止めたので視線の先を見ると、ネコです。タイガが見ているというより、ネコに睨みつけられている。

When we walked through the next district, Taiga suddenly stopped.  A cat was glaring at her.

野良ネコは、お座敷犬よりもずっと強いです。

A feral cat is much stronger than a pet dog.

その近くの民家の庭先の花。シラーの仲間のようです。とてもキリリとした花で、うちのシラーよりも好きかも。

A beautiful flower growing in a container by the side of a house.  I think it is one of the scilla family.

その横にあるこの花。初めて見ましたが、これもシラーなのでしょうか？パステル調の青色がなんとも言えない魅力で、水彩画に２，３輪だけ描くといいかも。

Next to the above, another very beautiful, but delicate, flower with pastel blue petals.  I would love to see a water-colour painting with just a few of these flowers.

ランではなくケシやニンジンのような葉っぱの植物です。

its leaves look like those of poppies or carrots.

丘を越えて向こう側へ向かう途中の公園で、タイガがまたネコ探し。ここで顔にネコパンチをくらったこともあります。

Taiga loves sticking her head into this row of azaleas of a park, looking for a cat.  She had her face beaten once.

この坂を下りた谷底に当たるところに確かめたい庭木があります。

We walked down this slope towards the bottom of the valley, since I wanted to check on a plant.

ウスギモクセイの実です。５月に熟すそうですが、もう全体的に色づいてオリーブみたいです。英語で「フレグラントオリーブ」と呼ばれるのが納得いきます。

This is a member of the Osmanthus fragrans that produces fruits.  Its flowers are light yellow, as opposed to orangey yellow of the normal fragrant olive.

春になったら確かめたいと思っていた木です。建築家が自分用に建てた家で、個性的な入口の前に植わっています。去年の夏頃に見たとき、葉っぱはナッツが生りそうな雰囲気の木なのに、イチジクのような実がぶら下がっていたので興味津々でした。

the house with this tree.  I saw this tree last summer, looking like a nut tree but it had fruits shaped like figs.  I wanted to check how it looked in spring.

正体は、ハンカチの木でした。青空を背景に見ると花が分かりやすかったです。

It turns out to be the handkerchief tree!  Against the backdrop of the blue sky, I could see the countless flowers in full bloom.

これがそのハンカチ。園芸店でみたことのあるのは数十センチの小苗にこの花が着いているものだったので、こんな大きな木は初めてです。

Up close, the handkerchief.  The only time I had seen this tree was in a flower shop, and it measured only about 50 cm.  It still had this hallmark.

葉っぱからは、イチジクの葉を思わせるようなクセのある臭いが漂っていました。蒸し暑い朝だったからか、数メートル先から臭っていたのにはびっくり。イチジク並みの強さです。

The new leaves smelt like fig leaves.  Moreover, I could smell them from several meters away, probably because of the humid and sunny morning.

その先の家ではムベの花が満開。

Nearby, there was the mube vine (Stauntonia hexaphylla).

花はかんざしのような、あるいはランの花のような風情。

The flowers are pretty, looking like girl's hair ornament or orchid flowers.

そして更にいくと、玄関先にビルベリーが植わっている花壇がありました。

Further on, there was a flower bed with bilberries.

普通のビルベリーの花です。対して、うちのは極小の花に実のサイズは生の米粒（失敗したなあ）。耐暑性があるというから今のビルベリーを買ったけど、こうやって普通品種が垣根のように繁茂しているのを見ると、こちらの実の大きいほうが良かったです。

These are normal-sized bilberries, whereas the variety I have produces really tiny flowers and berries.  I chose that one because they said it was heat tolerant.  Looking at these bushes growing vigorously, I think I made a mistake.

帰り道、私の好きな小路の入口の横を通りました。こうやってバーが立っていると「住人オンリー」に見えますが、最近聞いたところではこの奥には公園として一般に開放されているスペースがあるそうです。

On our way home, we walked by the entrance of my favourite path.  Looking at the bar in front of the entrance, one would think that it was for 'residents only'.  I recently heard that there is a space at the end of this little path, which is open to the general public. So, in theory, I should be allowed in.

でも、実際には入り込まないで、私の「眺めてほっこり小路」としてしまっておきます。

However, I prefer to keep this little path as 'watch and relax' treasure.

カメラに気を取られていたら、タイガが勝手に入っていきそうになったので、慌てて呼び戻して帰路につきました。

As I was occupied with my camera, Taiga started to walk in.  So I called her back and headed for home.

帰り道で見かけた、目の覚めるようなツツジ。

A stunning azalea that I saw on our way home.

実物はもう少し黒味を帯びた赤でしたが、蛍光色で目がチカチカしそうでした。花はハデハデが好きな私には、こういう庭木があるのは羨ましい限りです。

The actual flowers were a little darker than this, but the fluorescent red really hit my eyes.  I love showy flowers and I secretly congratulated the owner of this house.
