公園で At the park

 今日は蒸し暑い朝でした。胃が弱い私には、吐き気を促すようなモヤモヤの空気。もう帰りたいのにタイガは木陰で嬉しそう。

A respite from the rains, but very humid and uncomfortable for me.  I wanted to go home but Taiga was not having it.

私の「帰ろうっか」気配を察してさらにくつろぎモード。

She started to relax more and more.  I am getting less strict with her these days since Taiga is 10 years old and I do not know for how many more years she can walk to the park with full alertness, and

ハマナス「ハンザ」 Hansa rose

 ハンザが好きすぎて、もう１本だけ追加することにしました。２年前に買った疑惑のハンザは今年10輪近く咲いたので、全部ローズティーにして楽しみました。去年、信頼できる店から買った２本目の苗はまだ開花なし。

で、今度は私の中では最も信頼できる「京〇バラ園」から１本。ちょうどセールで安くなっていたのでついポチりました。ネット上で世界のハンザの開花写真を見ると、その形状が様々で、開花後何時間たったかによる違いどころではない、本当に同一品種かと疑うほど。こうなると、うちの疑惑ハンザも、あの香と大体あの形状なら、ハンザと呼ぶことにしました。それでもやっぱり、せめて京〇バラ園からのが１本あれば気が済みます。

A new Hansa plant has arrived - this is the 3rd one in my garden.  The Hansa plant I got 2 years ago produced some flowers this year and I enjoyed them as rose tea.  I treat my Hansa as a sort of a herb.

スモモの李王の実が順調に育っています。収穫時期は７月上旬からだそうなので、１個目が色づき始めています。

The fruits of "Riou" plum are growing nicely.  The harvesting time is said to be early July onwards.

栽培２年目の結実なので実の数は少ないですが、その分サイズも大きい。

Considering that the plant is only in its 2nd year of growing, the fruits are of quite impressive sizes.

公園で At the park

 毎日降る雨の合間に散歩。空模様からして今日は余裕があったので、「柿の木広場」まで行けました。貸し切り状態。

Being in the middle of a rainy season, it rains everyday and we have to catch the moment to go out for a walk.  We managed to go to the Persimmon Park this morning.  We had the whole place to ourselves.

ムクゲの花が咲き始めていました。

Hibiscus syriacus, of the most common flowers in the summer, coming into season.  It keeps producing flowers from early summer to autumn.

アジサイも満開。

The hydrangea also in season, although it does not last long.  Not exactly my favourite plant since it is poisonous.

うっとおしい天気のなかでこの色はほんの少し涼しげ。

道を渡って茂呂山公園へ上ってみました。

We crossed the road to go up the Moroyama Park.

桜の時期以来　初めて来るので、モミジの葉っぱが新鮮に見えます。

We have not been here since the cherry blossom season.  The Japanese maple trees' leaves are coming out.

スーパーのレジ袋が落ちているのを見つけて突然興奮。連日の雨で散歩中に顔見知りのワンコと出会う機会が少ないので、急に遊びを思いついたようです。

Taiga suddenly getting excited when she found a plastic bag on the ground.  I think she misses playing with other dogs, since we rarely meet her friends due to the rains.

帰る前にモミジの間を散策。

Before leaving the park, we walked through the maple trees.

帰りの坂道を歩いていたら、向こうからヒナとセナがやって来ました。

As we were going down the road, we saw Hina and Sena on their way to the parks we had just been to.

さらっとし過ぎなくらい穏やかな挨拶。

ベリーの初物 Berries ripening

ブラックベリーのナバホが熟し始めました。今日も終日雨の天気だったので、一部が地面に落ちて潰れていました。そこまで熟したのが一番甘くて美味しいのですが。

The Japanese rainy season has started and it has been raining all day today, as it did these last few days.  The blackberry Navaho berries are ripening in the rain with some of them dropping on the road.

来年用のケインを２本だけ残して、他は見つけ次第　排除しています。その２本が、連日の恵みの雨のおかげでもう２ｍを優に超えています。雨がやみ次第、摘心して脇枝が伸び出すよう誘導します。

Canes for next year are coming out one after another.  I am keeping just two of them and these have grown to above 2 meters already.

今日の収穫。ナバホはブラックベリー特有の種ゴロゴロですが、とっても甘い品種。昔、トリプルクラウンを初めて食べたとき「巨砲のよう」と思いましたが、ナバホはそれ以上に甘くて酸味とのバランスが絶妙です。写真右下の赤いのは、ジョーン・スクワイアの初物。上品な風味でとても気に入っています。

梅の頂きもの Ume plums from neighbour

 お隣さんから、もぎたての梅をたくさん頂きました。ほとんどは梅干しに使い、一部の色づいたものは砂糖漬けにして梅ジュースにします。その梅の木はうちの洗面所の窓の前に植わっていて、毎年ピンクの豊後梅の花が眺められます。大昔の子供の頃、実家の洗面所の窓の前にも梅の木がありましたがそれは白梅でした。個人的には豊後の花が好み。

My next door neighbour has an old Ume plum tree and the fruits were ready to be harvested.  She gave me quite a lot.  I will use most of these to make dried plums while the remainder will be used to extract the juice by pickling them in sugar.  Ume juice, when diluted with icy water, can be very useful to overcome fatigue in a hot climate.

今日は晴れて暑かったので、玄関のタイルの上で涼をとるタイガ。

Taiga absolutely flat out on the cool tiles of the porch.  It was sunny and hot today.

名前を呼んでもけだるくて目も動かさない。

When I called her name, she could not even be bothered to move her eyes towards me.

ブラックベリーが色づき Blackberry fruits' progress

 ブラックベリーのナバホがだんだんと色づいてきました。たった１本のケインの枝とは思えないくらい繁茂している。緑の葉っぱを背景に赤い実は、道行く人の目を引きます。

Blackberry "Navaho" is growing very vigorously.  Last summer, only one cane came out of the soil and I spread the branches left and right in order to maximise the exposure to the sun.

今、来年用に選んで残してある2本の太いケインが高さ1.5mくらいになっています。つい最近、地面から顔を出したばかりだったのに、タケノコの勢いです。

The cane is facing the road.  The red berries against the background of green leaves look very ornamental.  A lot of passersby have asked me what it was.

For next year, I have selected 2 canes and they are already taller than 1.5 meters.

Taiga is absorbed in watching the world go by.

しょうがないので前へ回ってカメラの方を向かせようと、「おやつ」とウソをついてみました。

I wanted her to pose for the camera, which she does not like.  So I uttered the word "treat".

一瞬チラ見、でも

She looked at me but realised I was tricking her.

すぐにウソがばれてしまいました。まーったく協調性がないというか。。。。

Japanese dogs are more like cats - they live to please themselves.

２年前の夏にオクで買った無点の鬼百合にもう蕾が見えてきました。届いたときはムカゴ？と思うくらいの極小の球根だったので、今年の展開にびっくり。去年は草丈20ｃｍくらいまでしか育たなかったけど、ムカゴがたくさん出て、それが鉢の土におちて自分からもぐりこんだので、５個くらいの球根でスタートして今は１0本以上この鉢に押し合いへし合いで育っています。その10本くらいの苗に今年のムカゴがわんさか付いているので、増え方は倍々ゲームどころではない。

"Oniyuri" (Tiger lilies) have grown well from tiny bulbs of 2 years ago.  This is a rare variety of Oniyuri since it does not get the spots on the orange petals.

これがその蕾。素芯でオレンジ色の花が咲くはずです。同じ時期に１個だけ買った無点黄花鬼百合は、「開花済み球根」だったので去年さっそく咲きましたが弱弱しい苗です。対してこの赤花のは生命力が強すぎ。

I am looking forward to seeing the flowers.  The spotless Oniyuri is so rare that I have never seen it, except the yellow flower variety I have which flowered last summer.
