西洋サンシュユ：カザンラク Cornus mas Kazanlak

コーネリアンチェリーは十数年前に果樹マニアの間で流行っていたのに、まもなく熱が冷めてしまった印象でした。実がなり始めるまでに数年かかり、実際に生った実を食べてみると美味しくなかったことが原因だったようです。

私は去年の12月に公園で偶然見つけたサンシュユの赤い実を味見したら、何と甘酸っぱくて美味しかった！その木は在来のサンシュユなので実のサイズは山野草のクコのような大きさで、味も少し似ていました。ただし、クコのような薬膳っぽい臭みはなく、またサンシュユにあると言われる渋みや苦味も皆無でした。そこで思ったのは、色づいたから食べるのではなく、霜にあたるほど放置しておけば美味しいのかも？

どうせなら大実が良い、と思っていろいろ比較してこの新品種にたどりつきました。カザンラクはブルガリアで改良されたもので、以下がメリット。

１）大実で長さは平均3.5cm (海外サイトでは実の長さを3-5cmと言ってるところもある)。果重は8-9g。ビタミンCが豊富なだけでなく、色々な薬効あり

２）自家結実

３）コーネリアンチェリーにしては矮性品種で、成長が非常に緩慢。放置で最終的に4m、剪定でよりコンパクトに維持できる

４）非常に豊産性でおびただしい量の実が生る

あとは西洋サンシュユに共通の、土を選ばない、暑さ寒さに平気、病害虫の心配ほぼなし。調べているうちに、ある海外サイトでは日本にも以前から入っている「パイオニア」という品種の実は、完熟させると容易に種を取り除くことが可能だそう。カザンラクもそうなるか、試すのが楽しみです。カザンラクが色づくのは欧州で8月後半だそうですが、私は10月頃まで待つ予定。ちょうどその時期はうちの果樹で収穫・生食できるものが無いので好都合です。

苗は、販売しているお店でも新品種なので、樹高の低いものしかない（高さ15cmくらい）と電話で脅されていたのですが、届いたものを見て大変嬉しいサプライズでした。40cm弱。希少品種であることを考えると、これで大満足です。

また、接ぎ木苗なので接ぎ穂が活着したかどうか確認できるよう「今にも新芽が萌え出しそうな苗をを～」とリクエストしたら「そんなの無い！」と言われていたのですが、この苗は新芽が展開し始めています。

私のYouTube動画を見てくれるブルガリア人の女性にカザンラクを買うか迷っていると話して以来、何度も地元のコーネリアンチェリーの様子をご自分の料理動画に組み込んで見せつけて来たので、さっそく書き込みに行ってきます。

Cornelian cherry trees were in vogue among fruit tree gardeners more than 10 years ago but the popularity evaporated just as soon as it began.  The reasons were, as I understood, it took many years before fruiting and, when fruits were at last harvested, they did not taste great.

I got interested in this family of trees when I tasted the leftover fruit off the tree in December last year.  It was a fruit of the indigenous tree (Cornus officinalis) and it tasted sweet and sour, and very nice.  So I thought perhaps if you left the fruits until they got a bit creased on the outside, you do not get bitterness.

I researched and compared a lot of varieties and decided that this Cornus mas Kazanlak was the best variety for me.  This is a variety developed in Bulgaria and it has just been introduced to Japan - there is only one nursery dealing with this variety in Japan.  The following are some of the benefits of Kazanlak.

１）Large fruits with an average size of 3.5cm long (one site overseas says the fruit varies between 3-5cm long), weighing 8-9g.  The fruit is rich in Vitamin C as well as having other medicinal benefits.

２）Self-pollination

３）Dwarf habit and slow grower.  Ultimate height 4m but you can keep it much more compact by pruning.

４）Extremely prolific

スモモの開花 Plum blossoms

 「開花」といっても、ピーク済みの段階。３日前で7割くらいの開花状態だったのが、２日前の雨ですっかり花粉が流れてしまいました。

The plum blossoms are past their peak.  They were 70% open 3 days ago but the heavy rain 2 days ago have more or less washed away the pollen.

これは去年の春に棒苗で届いた「李王」。２階バルコニーでグングン育ち、枝の分岐も過不足ない状態で2022を終了。李王はスーパーで見たことがないので、まだ２年目の苗ながら実を成らせます。とても香の良い品種だそうで今から楽しみ。

The "Riou" plant that arrived in spring last year has grown well and it is covered with flowers.  The fruits of this variety are said to have a superior fragrance so I am looking forward to tasting them this summer.

こちらは同時に届いた、注文の本命だったハニーハート。新苗ではなく、たぶん２年生の苗の枝を切り捨てたもので、年季が入っているのでよく育つだろうと期待していたのに、決して目覚ましい成長ではありませんでした。毎年６月末にスーパーで買って食べるほど好みの品種なので、ぜひ自家製のを味見したいです。

This "Honey Heart" that arrived with the Riou plant has not done as well as Riou.  However, I buy the fruits of this variety every summer in the shop and I know how delicious they are.

こちらは彩の姫。これほど安定して実を成らせる品種はありがたい。プラ袋は南高梅を高接ぎしたもの。

"Sai-no-Hime" is a steady producer and the fruits are really delicious.

こちらはエレファントハート。この苗にも南高梅を接ぎました。

This is "Elephant Heart", a US variety.  The fruit has a very unique taste and flavour and I really love this variety.

知っている人やワンコが家の前を通りそうになると一早く察知して門のところで待ち伏せ。

昨日買ったフレンチラベンダー苗。右の苗は朝に地元ＪＡで買った苗。真ん中と左のは夕方に練馬の渋〇園芸本店へ行って目にとまったもの。なぜ同じような苗が２個も？真ん中のは夕暮れせまる光の中で見たとき、色がとても濃く目に映って、しかも「フレンチラベンダー、ディープパープル」という名前までついていました。右のは単に「フレンチラベンダー」のタグ。その当時の光の具合では濃い赤紫に見えたのと、値段（660円）がＪＡの（350円）よりずっと高かったので、てっきり別の品種かと思ってしまいました。が、今朝の光の中で見て勘違いだったことがわかりました。まぁ、薄暗がりの中で花は買うべからずという教訓になりました。

一番左の苗はフレンチラベンダーの「わたぼうし」。これはいつ見ても好きな品種なので、660円の価値あり。

公園で At the park

 今日の予想最高気温は21℃ということで、朝の散歩時から５月上旬のような温かさでした。公園への道すがら、すれちがう人たちがニコニコしているのでタイガも楽しそう。

The forecast max. temperature for today was 21℃, and the morning air was already as warm that of May, when we headed for the park.

The Magnolia kobus trees in the park have started to bloom.

花柄が大きいのでモクレンのようにも見えますが、モクレンにしては早すぎるので勝手にコブシと思っています。でも、コブシにしては北を向いて咲いていない。もしかしたら、こんなに立派な花柄の園芸種なので、山のコブシのような北向き開花ではないのかも？

The flowers are very large for Magnolia kobus, almost as large as those of real magnolia.  However, magnolias do not flower for at least another month.  On the other hand, these trees in the park do not flower facing the north as do the wild Magnolia kobus trees in the mountain.  So, these trees may be an improved variety for the garden and parks.

豪華な八重咲なのでヤブツバキではなさそうです。

その近くの公園のサンシュユの木も満開。太陽との角度の関係で暗く見えますが、遠くからでも目立つ黄色とその背景の青空。西洋サンシュユに「ウクライナイエロー」という品種名がありますが、まさに国旗の色を連想させます（ただし、国旗の黄色は色づいた麦畑だそうです）。在来のサンシュユや西洋サンシュユのコーネリアンチェリーは「不味い」という評判を昔聞いたことがありますが、去年の12月にまだこの木に残っていたシワ入りの実を１個試し食いしてみたら、甘酸っぱくて美味しかったです。霜が降りて美味しくなるなら、薬効を考えると植えたい１本ですが、うちはもうスペースがありません。

家まであと15mほど、というスポットで最近タイガは動かなくなるクセがついてしまいました。散歩を長引かせたいようです。日陰が涼しくて心地よいので、私も一休み。

Taiga has got into the habit of resting when we are nearly home, with only about 15 metres left -  probably she wants to prolong the walk.  This spot is always in the shade and it was a welcome break for me, too.

However with the word "Treat", she sprang to her feet.

Now she is eager to reach home.

実生のクリスマスローズは、今日が美しさのピークになりそう。咲き進むにつれて花柄が大きくなって、かなり綺麗です。これで、赤花株のように年々綺麗な花に変身してくれれば満足ですが。

私が地面に張り付くようにしてクリスマスローズの花に見入っていると、無言のタイガがやって来ました。欲求があってもじっとガマンの甲斐犬なので、なるべく私のほうから気づいてやろうと（時々）努力します。

Taiga thought I was too absorbed in the observation of the plants and she came closer to me for attention.  She is a very patient creature and she speaks to me with her silent look.

もすぐ10歳のおばあちゃん犬ですが、年々、可愛さが増してきます。これだけ長く一緒にいるとタイガは私の心が読めて、「カーチャンを上手く躾けてやった」と思っているかも。

She will be 10 years old soon.  Having lived together for so long, she probably thinks that she has trained me to her liking.

Kinako, roasted soybean flour, is a traditional and very popular superfood in Japan.  When you halve the baked cup cake in half, the aroma of roasted soybeans is inviting.

公園で At the park

 タイガは朝散歩のとき、公園の方角とその反対方向の住宅街を一日おきに選びます。今日は公園の日。いつものように林の中を歩いていると、

we met a new face - a 2-year old Shelty, named Raito.  From his attire, obviously a boy.

今年もクリスマスローズの季節がやってきました。前からある赤花系に加えて、今年は実生株が初開花に至りました。10年くらい前、ゴールド苗にとりつかれたように大枚はたいて十数株買ったのに２年もしないうちに全部消滅してしまいました。が、数年前に土の中から小さな発芽苗が出ているのに気づきました。それが後方に写り込んでいる小苗。

My Christmas roses are starting to bloom.  The tiny yellow plant in the back is a seedling, flowering for the first time this year after several years' waiting.  About 10 years ago, I was obsessed with gold Christmas roses and bought more than a dozen of them.  They all disappeared within 2 years.  However, several years ago, I noticed a tiny seedling coming out of the soil and it grew very slowly without any flowers until now.

この赤花苗は、届いた当時は極めて残念な色だったのが、４年目くらいから結構綺麗な花が咲くようになりました。今では開花が楽しみになっています。大輪で透明感のある花。

実は、この苗も一連のゴールド苗と同じ育苗者の作出（ゴールド苗で有名になったK農園）ですが、唯一、ゴールドでないこの苗だけが生き残っています。

This red flower plant came from the same grower who was famous for developing gold Christmas roses, and the only one I bought from him that was not gold.  Ironically, this is the only survivor.

こちらが先述の実生苗。後ろのほうの花びらが随分と緑色なのでゴールド苗とは呼べないですが、実生にしてはまあまあ綺麗。しかも勝手に生えてきて開花に至ったほど丈夫なので、引っこ抜かないで放置です。願わくば、赤花株のように年々綺麗な花になることです。

This is the seedling, flowering for the first time this year.  The petals are tinged with green colour, so I wouldn't call this a gold Christmas rose.  Nevertheless, for a seedling, this is not an ugly flower.  Moreover, this plant was tough enough to grow up without my caring for it.  So, this will stay in my garden.
